Breaking Down the Opening Drives
After reading OCC's post on 4 Stats That Left Me Scratching My Head...a few of thecomments were talking about looking at the balance of plays called and their effectiveness, sacks allowed, and penalties suffered. I went back with www.nfl.com and read through the drive logs and took my stats from there. Let me know if there is anything else I can throw in with the drive breakdowns I looked at below following the jump. I tried to cover quite a bit concerning the drives.

Week 1 - @Tampa Bay: Couldn't overcome a big sack on first down which stalled the drive, luckily Folk managed to put that ONE through the uprights. lol
Week 2 - New York: First drive, new stadium. You'd hope it would be a little more memorable than 3 and out.
Week 3 - Carolina: Dallas converted a nice 3rd down, but an eventual 10 yard sack forced a 40 yard FG try that missed.
Week 4 - @Dener: Was a decent drive, but stalled on a 3rd down sack. Offense just never really seemed to be in sync this day.
Week 5 - @KC: Drive had some promise, but the Illegal Man Downfield penalty on the Barber screen led to too long of a 3rd down and a punt.
Week 6 - Bye:
Week 7 - Atlanta: Another 3 and out. This following the Atlanta TD, a first down at least would of been nice. Team bounced back huge, but another slow start.
Week 8 - Seattle: The offense was clicking, then just stopped. Forcing second and third and long didn't help.
Week 9 - @Philadelphia: Drive was both bad and good. Good use of Roy for the first down, bad sack the following play. No points.
Week 10 - @GB: People may disagree with me, but the Nick Folk miss(will be nice and not call it a choke) was as big of a play as the Woodson sack with the controversial fumble recovery by Felix. Moved the ball well, but once again, a sack on 3rd down affected the overall outcome of the drive.
Week 11 - Washington: Another 3 and out.
Week 12 - Oakland: Another missed opportunity for points, offense moved the ball, but 2 offensive penalties. Hard to conver 3rd and 24s
Week 13 - @New York: This drive just stalled once it crossed into Giants territory...I don't really know what to say. It did help create an advantage in field positioning over the next few drives.
Week 14 - San Diego: Nice drive that overcame 2 penalties and 2nd and 22. 3 points was disappointing, but for an opening drive over the year, it was at least something on the board.
Week 15 - @New Orleans: Quick strike TD, stunned the crowd. Stunned the Saints. Great plays and execution.
Week 16 - @Washington: A Terrence Newman INT set up the short field and the offense executed. Nice 3rd down conversion
Week 17 - Philadelphia: Miles drawing the PI on 3rd down was a huge conversion. And the conversion on the Witten TD was just Witten dominating.
The Wildcard was the same, a little movement, with problems that stopped the drive:

You are not going to convert many, if any 3rd and 32s. That really destroyed a promising drive.
Overall, you'd have to say the blame goes to the team as a whole, although, the running backs definitely did their share at just below 5.8 yards a carry. The negative plays of sacks and penalties definitely hampered a few drives. It appears to me that poor decisions and execution resulted in leaving 12 points on the board, just with missed FGs and places they could of kicked, but were forced to punt. Hopefully better execution this coming season leads to less points left on the field.

Sacks & Penalties
Pretty much a microcosm of the O’s season – despite a lot of success, biggest issue is overcoming the handicaps of lost yards/downs when we beat ourselves.
I'm not losing my memory, I'm living in the now
Rec'd for effort, for content and for general stat geekery
With the exception of week 16, I believe all drives started on or around the Dallas 20, give or take a couple of yards. Scoring from this field position is what is sometimes called a “hard score” in the NFL. Life gets a lot easier when a team finds itself in ‘short field’ positions.
Often, these short fields are the result of a takeaway, a long punt or kickoff return, a missed field goal or really bad punting position for the other team. Which brings us to a completely different but related problem for the Cowboys, starting field position.
What would be interesting is to see how the 27 points compare to other teams – I’m not sure the Cowboys are that far off, particularly if we were to adjust for our kicking woes.

Thanks One.Cool
I thought about including the starting FP too, but I started worrying I was putting too much in and going nowhere lol I might look into that later…That INT by TNew sure helped to set a short field against Washington, no doubt.
It will take me probably another day or two, but I kinda wanted to even just compare the other 3 teams in the East with the same categories as above. The East is a fairly high scoring conference and one we all know fairly well, so I figured that would make the easiest comparisons.
Complete agreement +11111
I still fume about that GB game, that missed FG took the wind right out of the team.Hands to the face that took a 6pt fumble for a td away.I still say Jones had control and was down by contact. The RW fumble!!!!(PULLING MY HAIR OUT,FOAMING AT THE MOUTH,SCREAMING CURSE WORDS,TURNING INTO THE HYDE MONSTER)WHEW what just happened!!! Good Job with the stats!!!
lol right there with ya..
My dad is a Packers fan too…it was brutal

Really like the trend this shows for Romo and the offense
From week 10 onward, we had solid opening drives on 9 of 10 attempts including both playoff games.
Combine that with OCC’s #‘s showing that Tony’s 1st quarter QB rating was ~90 last year (compared to ~75 over his career), and we have good reason to believe that slow-start Tony is more a part of his past than his future.

Correcting a few of those penalties going forward
will only add to more success in terms of points too.

Have a USMC buddy that is die-hard GB
He watched that game with me, I had been talking up my Cowboys for days and that game just drove me crazy.Every time we got something going some STUPID mistake tore the wheels off(same with the Chargers game) and I had to eat a serving of my words with a side off WTFrigg!!! Hated It!!! Romo seems to get better every game, every season, and every mistake.Which is what you want with your QB,can’t help but get excited about our team this coming season!! GO COWBOYS !!!
Wade Phillips first Super Bowl win is as the Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys!!!
100 passes 40 runs
huge run/pass difference. No wonder Romo gets sacked, the defense knows the Cowboys are going to air it out.

This certainly confirms what I thought I saw
which was self-inflicted drive stopping and better overall movement in the second half of the season.
FREE THE OGLETREE!!!
Great work. Not surprised a lot of it was about sacks and penalties. The
improvement later in the season is definitely notable, though.
Thanks Fernie,
it definitely was. I am working on a follow up post that has opening drive point totals of all the other 31 teams as well. I dont have per drive basis, but will still give a good idea where we matched up with the rest of the league.
3rd Quarter Opening Drive
JLMax -
I went and looked at the data for the Cowboys opening drive in the 3rd Quarter over the season and was surprised that the Cowboys did even worse in that period. Only 17 total points! You may want to create your full stat table for that too – it shows the Cowboys have a lot of trouble scoring at the beginning of the game and after the halftime break.

It's all that good coaching they are getting
"You can't live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you."
- John Wooden (God rest his soul)
yea they didn't impress me in the second half last year
like they did in 2007.
If you are right, this makes JLMax’s post a lot more significant – while 10 points between us and the nfl average isn’t much, we lost around 24-30 points over the course of the year compared to other teams when you take into account both drives. Considering all the close losses, that equates to a victory or two.
