The VRR: News & Notes from the Cowboys Third Week of OTAs

The running backs this week have certainly seen their fair share of storylines. While Marion Barber reportedly slimmed down from 222 pounds to 210Felix Jones has received praise from both his coaches and Jerry Jones for his progress in the pass-catching department.

"Felix is way ahead of where he's been as a receiver,'' the owner said. "He's been impressive with how he's running his routes.

"That has a chance to get ugly if he's really good at running those routes coming out of the backfield.''

Could a speedier backfield help the offense put up more points? Well, on Tuesday, the team practiced its red zone offense--one area that could use improving. And it sounds as if the squad still has some work left to do.

"A number of times (last year) we got into the red zone, and then we got ourselves back out of the red zone, whether it be a penalty or a minus play," Garrett said. "The biggest thing is being efficient, particularly on early downs, to continue to stay in some reasonable down and distance situations where you can just run your offense."

Efficiency is something quarterback Tony Romo sometimes lacked in the red zone last season, as he finished 22nd in the league among quarterbacks who made at least 20 throws inside the 20. Romo threw three interceptions in the red zone, only two other quarterbacks throwing more in the area.

More VRR after the jump.

Star-divide

The offense, Romo in particular, fared better in yesterday's two-minute drills.

Romo scored on a keeper in the first-team's two-minute drill offering. He flung the ball in the air to celebrate. He was 7-of-9 in the two-minute drill, finding Jason Witten (three times), Marion Barber (three times) and Dez Bryant once. He took what the defense gave on the drive.

The Star-Telegram has pictures of Wednesday's practice. It looks like it was one-handed catching day for the wideouts.

Do you want to guess who John Clayton put atop his list of five rookies to watch?

1. Dez Bryant, WR, Dallas Cowboys: Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was one of the owners who passed on Moss in 1998 because of character questions. Jones couldn't let history repeat itself, so he grabbed Bryant with the 24th pick in the first round.

Bryant is a monster in practice. Like Hakeem Nicks of the Giants, Bryant has massive hands. When he wears gloves in practice, they almost look like boxing gloves because his hands are so big. Plus, he catches everything. One NFL observer at a Cowboys practice came out shaking his head. He said by the end of the season, Bryant will be the Cowboys' best wide receiver. The observer said Bryant will end up being better than Michael Crabtree, who should have a breakout season for the 49ers. Bryant is faster than Crabtree. Both receivers have great hands.

Putting Bryant on an 11-win Cowboys team is almost the same as what we saw last year with Harvin going to a playoff-bound Vikings team. Harvin caught 60 passes and scored eight touchdowns. Bryant may not get 60 catches in an overloaded Cowboys receiving corps, but he could get 10 touchdowns and loads of highlights.

Todd Archer tries to temper folks' enthusiasm on Bryant by noting the rookie wideout's recent "mixups" with Tony Romo.

On Tuesday, he had a couple of mixups with Tony Romo, although he was able to make a catch anyhow. On Wednesday, there was another downfield mixup that had the rookie smacking his helmet. During the team, seven-on-seven and two-minute periods that I charted, he did catch one pass from Romo.

On a side note, Archer put together a comprehensive list of when Dallas' player contracts will expire. 26 after 2010...YIKES!

Jerry Jones is rather cut-and-dry in regards to Patrick Crayton's absence from OTAs.

"There's nothing to be confused about," Jones said during the Wednesday practice. "Patrick is under contract. This is a voluntary workout. When we have mandatory workouts, he'll probably be the first player in line to be here. That's really the way it is and really no confusion."

So remember that Australian Olympic sprinter, Josh Ross, who was supposed to tryout for Cowboys? Evidently he will be working out at a football camp in Dallas that is not directly associated with the Cowboys.

Below, Bradie James talks with the media after returning to practice on Wednesday.

Brandon Williams continued to impress the coaches this week. If he can make a full recovery from last season's ACL surgery, he may be the #3 guy behind DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer. Below, the CBS11 crew discusses Williams' return to the practice field after Monday's OTA.

Alhough it may not have the controversial substance of the Darren Sharper-Visanthe Shiancoe Twitter fightKeith Brooking is welcoming the challenge from Eagles' TE Brent Celek, who commented that he "can't wait to play" against Brooking again.

"Oh, he’ll find me, I promise," Brooking said. "You can print that one. He won’t have to look for me very hard." After a moment’s thought, Brooking extended an invitation to his friend from Philly.

"He can jump in the middle of our huddle, if he’s that bad," Brooking said.

Ahh, the ol' San Antonio vs. Oxnard Training Camp debate. Jerry Jones says, let's continue to do both!

"I’m very pleased with having camp in San Antonio half the time and California half the time," Jones said. "That looks like a hand to me (going forward)."

Speaking of training camp, the BTB 2010 Camp Fundraiser is still on. With 106 people donating more than $3000, that's pretty darned good. Though, we are still driving for that 125, so if you haven't yet donated, just click below!

If you look at them...

only about 6 of them are starters and another 4 or 5 are backups that get much playing time. The rest are all depth, UDFA’s and Practice Squad guys.

Also, could the FO be hedging their bets for a lockout year?

here is the list

2010
Deon Anderson
Miles Austin
 Alex Barron
Gerald Sensabaugh
Sam Hurd
Jason Hatcher
Doug Free
Stephen Bowen
Kyle Kosier
Pat McQuistan
Cletis Gordon
Junior Siavii
Marcus Spears
Pat Watkins
 Alan Ball
Steve Octavien
Travis Bright
Kevin Brock
Marcus Dixon
Herb Donaldson
Marquis Floyd
Jesse Holley
Connor Hughes
Curtis Johnson
Leon Williams
 Donovan Woods

of the list above I say, Austin, Sensi, Barron, spears, hatcher, bowen, free, kosier are ones worth discussing. I think AUstin and Sensi will be resigned this year.

Spears will probably be gone since he may want too much. Hatcher and Bowen have been groomed to take his place and both will be resigned.

We have been looking to replace Kosier, but we may just resign him since he has been so consistent.

Free is a must and might get a 1st and 3rd round tender.
Barron is a must (swing tackle).

the rest are all non-critical.

quite a few won’t make it past this camp so the list will get smaller.

I don’t see a reason to panic

by CowboysFanatic on Jun 3, 2010 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Add Ball to that must list

Even if he doesn’t become the full time safety, he’s a solid swing corner/safety and can do a spot start at corner (if not full time). I don’t want to lose a player of his caliber.

by Eagles suck on Jun 3, 2010 4:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Painless list

Lock up Mr. Austin, Sensabaugh, and Free, and get either Bowen or Hatcher to stay, and I’m happy.
A lot of those guys will be gone by August either way.
I got scared when I saw that #!

I'm more concerned with the contracts ending after the 2012 season

There are more quality players on that list plus Austin and Sensabuagh will more than likely sign new contracts before the season starts anyway.

Only 4 of true substance:

Miles

Free
Kosier

And of these, is there any doubt about Free and Miles? If we miss on the other two, it will be because someone else is ready.

Lots of Fodder in that 26

Here’s the “important” players

Miles Austin
Doug Free
Kyle Kosier
Alex Barron
Gerald Sensabaugh
Alan Ball
Travis Bright
Deon Anderson
Stephen Bowen
Jason Hatcher
Pat McQuistan
Marcus Spears
Pat Watkins

The only “non-replacable” guys on that list are Miles Austin and Doug Free. I don’t think there’s any doubt that Miles and Free will find a way to stay with the Cowboys organization.

by Blue Eyed Devil on Jun 3, 2010 3:03 PM CDT reply actions

of these

watkins, McQ and bright may not make it past this camp. bright maybe headed back to PS.

hatcher and bowen will probably be resigned.

Sensi and AUstin will probably get signed by the end of summer or in mid-season

Free will probably get a 1st and 3rd round tender at worst. if he is good and shows up good he will get a big time contract as he would deserve it.

Ispears is gone.

anderson is easily replacable.

spears is gone.

allan ball will get a tender (probably 2nd). if he does good then he might get a 1st round tender.

its not as bad as it makes out to be.

I think barron is the big question. Team discussed releasing columbo or adams and the choice was adams. they know they have to replace columbo soon. maybe barron is the player. with brewster the swing tackle back up on game days.

the other player I am on the fence is kosier. he is older. but also our most consistent player. we might resign him to a 3 year reasonable contract.

If Jones becomes a receiving threat, our offense will truly become unstoppable so load up on Cowboys in your draft this year if you want to win your league. I see 5 or 6 players who could produce very good fantsay numbers in this offense.

yeah but in fantasy that doesn't mean alot unless you're in a PPR league.

Witten is probably about the 5th best TE in fantasy football because for whatever reason his TD numbers fluctuate so much.

I doubt that

The addition of Bryant, the increased role of FJ, hopefully combined with improved play from Bennett and RW won’t leave many touchdowns for Witten. That said, I have no doubt he will still have a very integral offensive role. I just don’t think he will put up that many touchdowns.

RW is the opposite of WR. Coincidence? I think not.

Agree - Romo is the only fire 1st rounder

I know he gets overlooked in fantasy football leagues without Cowboys fans. If you’re lucky, you can grab him in the 2nd. All other Cowboys are risky because we’ll be inconsistent. Personally, I’d only rank Felix (in my 8 team league) 4th in my (future) RB list, if he were to be in my team. There’s just not enough touches for him. And too few red zone carries. Any mediocre RB on a crappy team who gets 20 carries is more of a sure thing. But, I’d take a 6th round or later flyer on Felix.

by Eagles suck on Jun 3, 2010 4:15 PM CDT up reply actions

btw., with the apparent fire power we're amassing at WR

I’d expect to see dwindling passing stats for Witten this year. AND, maybe, just maybe, we’ll see Bennet get a few more of those opportunities. For me, his fantasy stock is dropping though he’s still a phenomenal player.

by Eagles suck on Jun 3, 2010 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know if inconsistent is the best word there...

I think this year you are going to see a ton of Romo just taking what the defense gives him, continuing on his trend from last year. We will never be Indy hitting heavy 3WR & 1TE deep for 6 catches a piece, because we have a legit running game. Outside of Romo, Witten, and Miles, it gets tough to predict, unless you can get the others late, but I would draft Bryant and Roy as guys to be fill in starters, but that’s still gambling.

Witten was a FF beast in '08 ... then killed me for sticking with him last year

I’m thinking of taking Dez in a later round. Hard not to imagine him being used in red-zone packages.

Haha..Enter button whooped my butt there...lol

I stuck with him in two leagues, both were TD heavy unfortunately…luckily had other players that picked up the slack. I will still probably stick with him again, esp in my PPR leagues, but maybe try to sneak him a round later.

I agree about Dez, I like him a lot and think he could do some big things, especially down the stretch, even more than what Crabtree did last year…I am hoping to get him late, like maybe 8 or 9th rounds, but its doubtful…worth the shot. One league I am doing, we are making it into a dynasty/keeper league after this season, so Dez will be on the radar there for sure

No way Romo is a first rounder.

He should be available in the fourth or fifth round. There are better fantasy QBs out there.

by TheAnsah on Jun 3, 2010 8:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Nope, last season I did 6 leagues, 1 league had one other Cowboys fan..

I usually get most my players later on…I ride as long as possible without selecting Romo, I also shoot for 4th or 5th round too…usually dont end up with him, because in my work league and my leagues with friends, they all think I will be upset if I dont get Romo—or they take him to be funny, so I nab a guy a round or two later. Most people I know have trouble separating fantasy from their real life teams…I have no problems…I only avoid Eli and Fat Ass Jacobs, I’d rather finish in last, then with with those two. lol

More just mean I wont go out of my way to get a Cowboy high, as I said before, it’s all about separating Fantasy from real life. I try to keep a level head, but it's hard to ignore Romo in the 3rd

If Brees and Manning are early picks, who’s to say Romo is so much worse? His FF numbers are worthy of a 3rd round pick IMHO. Witten and Dez are both wild cards this year. Witten had been the #1 TE in my league the previous year, and regularly whipped whoever my opponent put up. That differential is worth a 5th IMHO …

I also think the Cowboys D will finally prove its mettle this year. And I don’t think that’s just a Boys fan perspective.

by DalaiLuke on Jun 4, 2010 3:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Well from a fantasy perspective.

If you don’t get Manning, Brees, or Rodgers(who was the #1 QB by a longshot last year), you can generally wait closer to the 4th or 5th for a Matt Schaub or Tony Romo.

It also depends on if your QBs score 6 or 4 points for passing TDs. To me QB is the easiest fantasy piece to get.

Good to get Felix into passing routes

The main weakness in Felix’s game last year was pass protection. Unlike Choice and Barber, he just isn’t good at consistently blocking rushers. An extra man in a pattern may make opposing defenses think twice about blitzing.

This reminds me again of how good TChoice is. I remember him going out and running a pattern exactly like a wideout last year. I couldn’t believe it was a running back. But it only happened once and I don’t remember seeing him go out on a passing route after that.

every Roy comment rubs me the wrong way.

Cowboys WR Roy Williams has said he’s bothered by the dropped passes from last year. That’s why Williams spent a few minutes on the Juggs machine catching balls on Wednesay long after his teammates had exited Cowboys Stadium.

it does appear he is trying….And a ‘Few Minutes’ is not a good way for it to be written, here’s a link, but I will block quote the important part to save you time in reading one of Archer’s ‘Headlines’ that are 5 sentences long…lol

Williams said he’s been catching 200 balls a week off the JUGGS machine and another 40-50 a week in the throwing sessions with Tony Romo. Their chemistry – or lack thereof – has been a big topic since he came to the Cowboys in a trade with Detroit. He caught just 38 passes for 586 yards in 2009 with seven touchdowns.

http://cowboysblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2010/05/roy-williams-welcomes-dez-brya.html

Mr. Jones the activist - where did he go?

The Cowboys are the only team in the league not signing a single free agent and
now we find that the team has 26 players who have expiring contracts after this season.

I realize many of the 26 are not guys you worry about losing but it is just further indication of Jerry sitting on his hands. He seems to be very active in scheduling events for his stadium(Tennis anyone) but he has done nothing in free agency and he is not signing his own players. I am not a Jerry hater. Have always liked the guy, not just as owner but also as GM, but I am totally puzzled as to where our active GM has gone. Is he locked in a closet somewhere and we have an imposter doing nothing on almost all cowboy fronts.

by hayyabbott on Jun 3, 2010 5:31 PM CDT reply actions

You're sitting on the other side of this issue

There’s no reason why this can’t be a good thing. Has this offseason produced one player that is worth altering the long-term plan of the Cowboys?

If I’m Jerry, by all accounts, I’m pretty pleased with my drafting and the players I netted. One, in particular, has the media swooning and the fans spending. I smoothly let go of two pricey vets that were not worth it, and I had cheaper, younger, and possibly better players deservedly coming in to take those spots. I upgraded my line depth and purged myself of a Parcells-era draft bust in one swoop. I’ve got some of last year’s low-round redshirts making strong cases to see real gametime. Things are groovy, baby! Yeah!

In all seriousness, the Cowboys were a real contender last year. Their aim this year should be to earn top seed in the NFC en route to a hometown Superbowl. They’ve got a great mix of young and old, and consideration should be paid to the fact that a significant number of them seem to be homegrown. Despite the relative calm this year, the Cowboys have not been stagnant. Off the list of 26, I would say about half will not be there after next year’s camp.

Yes he was, and yes he did

I remember when Jerry took Dez out for dinner pre-draft, I thought he was crazy. At that time, Dez was still considered a top 12 pick. I never thought he was going to drop like he did. Jerry gets an A+ on that pick for getting rare talent at a big discount.

Dez Bryant, Miles Austin, Jason Witten, Felix Jones = defensive coordinator's Kobayashi Maru scenario

by APerfectStar on Jun 5, 2010 3:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Short memories around here

Jerry has been handing out big deals — to his most important players.

Demarcus Ware got his huge deal during ‘09. It’s the biggest or one of the biggest deals in the league and you plan around that.

Barber, Roy, WItten, Newman, James, Ratliff, T.O., Romo all got huge deals in ’07 and ’08.

That’s the core of the team. Some of these deals were ill advised but nobody can accuse Jerry of being cheap.

Here’s the bottom line — you can’t give a new, big-money, long-term contract if you don’t know what the terms of the new CBA will be. What’s the cap gonna be? When will a player be due for free agency? If you start giving out handfuls of big contracts and the new cap is lower than you planned, you’ll have to cut guys to get under.

Jerry has most of his vital players signed. He’ll franchise Austin if he has to buy time.

But nothing big will happen before a new CBA is hammered out.

...a little more on Austin.
If Austin doesn’t sign by the 15th of this month, as stipulated by league rules, Dallas will have the option to pay him 110% of his 2009 salary—$1.65 million—for the 2010 season.

Not to mention other teams who may be too agressive signing FAs now or anybody who may overestimate the new cap will be cutting alot of good players. Their is a strong posibility that alot of good players will flood the market after the new agreement.
Ultimately the new deal(agreement) will tell us if JJ played his cards right but its hard for me to complain about the way he has run the team the last several years.

dunk, why do I always feel not right after reading your posts?

Wolf, there are TONS of people that get stuck here… maybe best to have an open-ended return? Worst case: you don’t sober up until the flight home, and there’s a girl wearing a ring on her finger sitting next to you.
