Any news on rookie signings?
I've already booked my airfare and bought my game tickets to the Hall of Fame game. I want to be able to tell my son I saw the first professional game of future Hall of Famer Dez Bryant. Any news on when the Cowboys will start signing their draft picks? I saw an article the other day saying more than half of the picks have already signed, but Dallas hasnt even started. I know they usually start late, but considering their camp is the first to open and we are less than 2 weeks away I am starting to get a little nervous.

No need to worry, at least about the later-round picks. It’s extremely rare to see anything other than a 1st rounder hold out. Different teams have different philosophies on when to sign their picks. The Eagles, for example, have signed 11 of 13 picks – They just like to get it done and out of the way. Some teams haven’t signed any. I read a piece somewhere (National Football Post maybe) that some teams wait until a week or 2 before camp starts because they essentially want to keep the players poor (and out of trouble) until they’re sequestered away from civilization at camp.
The only real threat not to get done in time is Bryant.
Formerly Bye, Dawk :(
That's an interesting theory
… to not give these guys the scratch to play with to keep them out of trouble. Makes some sense.
Yeah, the only one I’m worried about is Bryant. Like I said, I just want to be there for his first game in a Cowboys (Dallas, that is, I know some smart azz will point out he was an Ok State Cowboy) uniform.
With Dallas’s camp opening so early, I doubt he’s done before Day 1 of camp. The teams usually work from latest pick to earliest. So even if they start soon, getting Dez in on-time could be in jeopardy. I see a lot of yak on the interwebs about how people think Dez will hold out a la Michael Crabtree last year. I really hope those fools are proved wrong.
Don't we all...
….Well, maybe not Bye, Dawk , but the rest of us.

The Cowboys like to start contract negotiations a week before the start of Training Camp and they tend to have every player signed and training for the 2nd day of TC.
That’s one of the changes that came from Bill Parcells, as far as I believe.
Arnold, almost 5 years of good memories, you'll be missed.
Viva México! Go Cowboys!
Sean Lissemore signs
Glad my post got the attention of the Cowboys management and they started the process. So, the 7th rounder signs today. If we can do one a day we should have them all done by camp. But I dont think Dez will be that easy.
Do we think Dez is better than Crabtree?
I know we all hope he is but untill we see him in a real game we don’t know.
I had Crabtree on my fantasy team and except for a couple of games he didn’t do much.
IMHO Dez will not do too much for us untill the latter part of the season. It’s very rare that rookie WRs have a great first season.Let’s hope Dez is the exception to the rule.

At least
There isn’t a Haywood-Bey this year; another receiver who was a huge reach who will command huge money. The only WR taken before Dez went to Denver, what, two or three picks earlier? The difference between pick 20 and 24 salary-wise is negligible, right?

Here is the contracts from last year
20. Detroit (fr. DAL) – TE, Brandon Pettigrew, Oklahoma State – Signed (5-years, $14.6M max; $9.3965M guaranteed)
24. Atlanta – DT, Peria Jerry, Mississippi – Signed (5-years, $13.25M max; $7.555M guaranteed)
How much of that is draft position
And how much is the position they play? Skills players usually command more money, right?

Also I screwed up
Demaryius Thomas was 22, not 20.

I should of checked too, here is the site I found on their signings...

I think it will also depend on what Dez—and agent—want out of this contract? If they think they are top 10 talent, they could try to get more than at least Thomas is getting. I have faith in both sides they take care of business on time.
I remember hearing about how Jerry talked to Dez before they drafted him about how it was very important he comes in and is here on first day of camp, practicing, not negotiating…But I could be wrong. Also have heard Dez say he wants to prove everyone wrong and be here on time—since that is another allegation on him, his tardiness. These next few weeks should be fun, but man, it won’t come soon enough.
Sam Young and Sean Lissemore have signed.
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.
Wow.
This blog is powerful…
I know Jerry waits every year, but it does stress me a bit to think about things dragging out for Dez…
Quick - Someone make a post about releasing Roy Williams!

Kick Ass! I get to see Sam Young in his first game as a Cowboy!
Something I will always remember! My 1 year old son will be able to tell his buddies one day that his Dad was there the day that the great Sam Young …
I'm Resigned to a Holdout
I think we’ll see a 2-3 week Dez holdout and that will stunt his growth, leaving Roy Williams room to take up the #2 spot.
Dez is already too big of a star and with situations like Chris Johnson, Vincent Jackson, and Darrelle Revis playout of publically this offseason I think all agents are going to try to get the most for their rookie clients.
Looking objectively, Dez is definately the most likely of the 32 first round picks to hold out: He has big star potential, the Cowboys said he’s a top-10 talent, and his jersey sales are through the roof which is generating revenue for the team. Furthermore, the Cowboys are the first to open camp which means there’s no slotting set up.
I don’t anticipate any kind of a Crabtree situation brewing, but I think we’ll see a 2-3 week hold out.

I don't think Dez holds out at all....
I remember at rookie camp…Dez actually said how important it was not to miss any time on the practice field….I ain’t got him getting all greedy…..I see a last minute deal around the start of training camp!

Don’t all first rounders say that? It’s just talk, I’m sure they don’t want to hold out, but everyone knows that the first contract could be the most importand since NFL life is so short.
Really?
dez….If ya think about it…His upbringing…Where he came from…his problems at OK state….He was LUCKY to get drafted by the cowboys….Yeah..They all say that…But I got a feeling that DEZ meant it….We’ll see….but DEZ WANTS to be a cowboy…..I stand by my statement…and promise not to say “I TOLD YOU SO”…when I’m RIGHT!!!!

Couldn't help but say
I TOLD YA SO!!!!!
HaHa….Joking…but so happy that Dez signed BEFORE training camp….I had a good feeling he and Parker would get it done….was surprised at the 5 years contract though.
But at least he is signed….and He’s a cowboy….and he WILL BE A STUD…THIS YEAR!!!!

Have I missed something?
I just have completely missed any talk by Dez or his agent about possibly holding out. All indications I’ve heard point to him being ready to go ASAP…unlike Crabtree who I don’t recall having any such enthusiasm last year.
God Bless Texas
I say he signs in time.
He just wants to play, and loves playing. He knows the Cowboys will treat him fairly and he’s been trying to prove that he’s not the Prima Donna WR. How could he holdout now and ruin that. I believe in the Dezmeister

He will hold out
Just watch. No one ever talks about holding out in OTAs, the rookies are just excited to play in the NFL. But come contract time they hold out, just like Felix Hones held out.
