CBSSports.com Presents Fantasy Football Projections (QBs)

234x60_ffc_medium

Hey BTB,

Once a week leading up to the season I'll be posting fantasy projections for different positions. CBSSports.com is SB Nation's fantasy football partner and are sponsoring these posts. As a reminder, SB Nation has a deal with CBSSports.com offering their Fantasy Football Commisioner leagues at half-price. If you're interested in purchasing a league for the price of $90, make sure you do it through this link so BTB gets the credit. You get lots of cool features with the league.

This week's projection concern the QB position. According to the CBSSports.com projections, they see Tony Romo as the #6 QB with 28 TDs and 14 INTs. He comes in behind Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Matt Schaub and Tom Brady.

Jamey Eisenberg had this to say about Romo in 2010:

Romo threw for a career-high 4,483 yards last year with 26 touchdowns and a career-low nine interceptions. And this year, he could be even better.

The Cowboys gave Romo a new weapon this offseason with rookie wide receiver Dez Bryant, a first-round draft choice. Bryant will join an impressive receiving corps that features Miles Austin, Jason Witten, Roy E. Williams and Patrick Crayton.

Romo also has solid receivers out of the backfield in Marion Barber, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice, and he plays in an offense that will remain explosive. We consider Romo a No. 1 Fantasy quarterback, and he could end up as a Top 5 player at his position.

The one downside to Romo is he has an inexperienced starter at left tackle after Flozell Adams was let go. Doug Free is the new left tackle if he can beat out Alex Barron, and he only has seven career starts. If Free can keep Romo from getting hit, Romo should shine -- and that's what we expect to happen.

So what do you think? Will Romo be a Top 5 QB this year?

Consider this an open thread to discuss Fantasy Football.

Romo will easily be a top 5 QB this season

and I think there is a very good possibility he could win league MVP honors with a brilliant season.

4,000+ yards and 30+ TDs are absolute locks unless he gets hurt.

In Romo we Trust

I agree with Terry

Romo always improves, year after year… No reason to think he’ll stop now… Very strong candidate for MVP with miles, a noticeably leaner/faster Jason witten, and a strong rook mr. Bryant, and the “worst 8 td receiver” mr. Williams… Hopefully our rbs get more screens and circle type routes this year

Yeah.

He’s a great low risk high reward QB in fantasy. You can get him in the 3rd or 4th and he has the potential to finish as high or higher than the top 3.

Eh… Brees, Rodgers, Manning, and Brady are easily Top 4. After that, I’d put him in the next tier that includes Schaub and Rivers, and there wouldn’t be much of difference between the 3.

agreed

Romo is in the same group as Schaub and Rivers.

Brady is an overrated fantasy QB.

Before someone says “are you crazy?!”, let me ask this, how many years has he had over 30 TDs?

He has had ONE ridiculous season and after that he’s had just decent years. Is he a top 8 fantasy QB? Absolutely. Is he definitly top 4? Nope.

aaron rodgers is so overrated.

he’s turned a 13-3 team into a 6-10 team. never won a playoff game but people think he’s in that company. ridiculous

by Pete Mccullagh on Jul 30, 2010 12:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Be careful with that kind of thing.

Peyton Manning QB’ed a 6-10 team in his 4th season as a starter two seasons after going 13-3. Those ’08 Packers dropped from 6th in scoring defense the previous season to 22nd and their run defense was swiss cheese. They scored basically the same amount of points on offense too but again their defense suffered a massive letdown forcing a puny 14 turnvoers in ’08 compared to 29 the previous season.

I do agree though that it’s preposterous to put Aaron Rodgers on this pedestal that Romo has to achieve certain things to climb up to Rodgers’ level. Neither guy has won squat or been consistently great for half as long as Manning or Brady.

by MadMick on Jul 30, 2010 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Before You Hoist Him Atop Your Shoulders

You first have to look at the QB’s that I feel are currently ranked above him right now. Brees, Manning, Brady, Favre, Rogers come to mind. I am not a Rodgers fan, but the stats he puts up behind that swiss cheese line are impressive. Brees is the most accurate passer in the game, Manning is Mr 12 Wins, Favre holds almost every passing record know to the game, and Brady, well, he will be even better after a year of playing time and getting back to 100%. I like Romo, and even have to defend him to some Cowboys fans that I work with. This is hard to do as a Saints fan. I think that Romo has great postential, especially since he has a better team chemistry and more potentially talented #1 and #2 Receivers. I think he could surpass Rodgers this year if he continues improving his game.

Matt Shaub?

I don’t see how they can have him rated above Tony, I know he has A Johnson but we are a better team and he is a better QB

by carolinacowboy on Jul 28, 2010 9:44 AM CDT reply actions

That's not what Fantasy is about...

often times, having a better team around you can be a detriment to your (statistical) fantasy performance. I submit Troy Aikman as Exhibit A.

"You can't live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you."

by 5Blings on Jul 28, 2010 10:03 AM CDT up reply actions

actually having a lot of weapons around helps a qb a lot

Notice Brady didn’t become a fantasy stud until Moss and Welker arrived.

Aikman never put up fantasy numbers because he was handing off to the best back of all time, he didn’t have to throw 30 times a game.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Jul 28, 2010 10:12 AM CDT up reply actions

I know

Shaub is a good Fantasy QB, but his #‘s from last year don’t really relate to him being a better Fantasy QB than Tony and our team overall weapon wise gives him the ability to be a better Fantasy QB this year

by carolinacowboy on Jul 28, 2010 11:14 AM CDT up reply actions

Schaub also will have to throw more to stay in games.

Houston still has a mediocre defense.

I do

Schaub is a fantasy beast when he’s healthy. That’s his main issue, health.

Felix is rated somewhere about 48th

I thought this was a bit low but I read here that he hurt his knee.

I am hopeing I can get Romo as my QB he is in a tier of the top 7 QBs.The only reason Brees is ahead of him is the NO is mostly just a passing offensive.

Austin is rated as the top WR on the Boys but it looks like Garrett will spread the catches around this year.

I had Witten last year and he hardly scored at all.IMHO he will have monster numbers this year.He has dropped to about NO.7 in TE ratings.

Dez is rated fairly high.I would say he is overrated where most sites have placed him.

Like Terry says it’s about stats and WRs on teams that always fall behind can put up some monster stats.

by TCB Orange Dino on Jul 28, 2010 10:50 AM CDT reply actions

I always get Romo

At least in one of the fantasy teams I have.

Before you ask why I'm a fan of both the Cowboys and Jets, I'll just say the answer is complicated and that it just turned out that way.
