M Lombardi says DAL improves with trade of Free for Donald Penn
This one caught me a little off-guard. He's connecting a few assumptions to make this plausable:
- DAL, 'a SB Caliber team w slight concerns at LT'
- TB isn't interested in signing Penn
Honestly, think the latter is more correct than the former. Just don't see DAL giving up a #1 pick for the 2nd time in 3 years...

I like Lombardi, but that trade makes no sense whatsoever for the Bucs. Donald Penn might be the most underrated player in the game, and one of the best LT’s in the NFL. You don’t just give up one of the best LT’s in the game for a significant downgrade at LT and a 1, likely a mid-late 1 at that.
Formerly Bye, Dawk :(
Significant down grade! WTF!!
I dont see it that way. Free is this years Austin. These guys are clueless about up and coming players not drafted on the 1st day.

You'll have to excuse JimmyK...
He’s still upset that that avg age of the Dallas O-line actually dropped a little when Free replaced Adams.

I just read the article and liked it. I just think Free is a good player.

That entire article stinks of a guy who never even bothered calling the teams in question and asking how they felt about those players.
There was a case to be made that Free was Dallas’ best O-Lineman when he was starting at RT last year and he’s shown nothing yet to suggest that the faith the Boys have placed in him was misguided. Trading him and a first for the opportunity to pay Penn tens of millions of dollars makes little sense for Dallas.
The Hanesworth trade idea is even sillier. If Lombardi is right, and Albert’s trade value is at rock bottom, wouldn’t it make infinitely more sense to let him build it back up before you trade him?
And giving up a starter and a third rounder (potentially a second) for Merriman? Even Daniel Snyder would fire a GM who did that.
And now we know...
why there aren’t any NFL teams knocking down Lombardi’s door to be their GM.

+1
i know lombardi has his fans here, but take more than a grain of salt anytime he offers his personnel “expertise” based upon his track record as an executive (although i do like donald penn quite a bit, FWIW). his tenure with the browns, raiders, & eagles was characterized by some exceptionally poor rosters from a talent acquisition standpoint, with the raiders still suffering from his prolonged stint there which relied on over-the-hill vets looking for a final payday.
I said it last year Jimmy and I'm saying it again
Free is going to be better than Peters!
What Free is
Mobile almost like a tight end
Good at the point of attack, he mauls people on run plays,
Very good against speed rushers
He has a punch that will stop a guy in his tracks
His only weakness last year was he got Bull rushed and I believe he may have fixed that already.
Peters is very good but I think Free is going to be special.
Free would make a better left guard than tackle.
Free is big and strong yes, but he gets beat by faster defenders.
Jerry Jones, had many chances to move up in the draft.
Could have traded a first and second to get a top tackle. Jerry did trading Bobby Carpenter, for Alex Barron.
