Bobby Carpenter Loses Job to Practice Squad Player

The St.Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that Bobby Carpenter has lost his starting job at weakside linebacker to 2008 49ers practice squad player Larry Grant.

The team is putting a positive spin on the change in the depth chart, noting Grant's improved play during the training camp.  They also muttered something about Carpenter's lack of physical play, but I'm sure that was a mis-statement as it would be absolutely shocking to us Dallas fans to hear that Barbie doesn't like to hit.

This seems to be a strong condemnation on Carpenter's skills  While not  particularly surprising for Cowboys fans and sobering to Rams fans, this revelation is actually great news for one group of fans.  It means that those who decried the Alex Baron trade because Bobby Carpenter was destined for a pro bowl season with the Rams will be able to get absolutely amazing odds in Las Vegas of the second team linebacker getting that trip to Hawaii.  Contact your bookie today!

I don't think there's much doubt that it was a great deal for us.

I believe

old Spagnolla usually demotes some guy every year to get everyones attention. He’ll work Bobby and Bobby will respond or not, I think not but hey hes not our problem now.

by Musiccitynorm on Aug 12, 2010 6:09 PM CDT reply actions

I like what Spags does. But sometimes it doesn't work

Usually soft players..oops…finesse players(don’t want anyone upset) don’t respond that well to things like this. I’m glad we got someone with some experience at the tackle spots for such a disappointment.

by JLMax09 on Aug 12, 2010 6:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Seriously, enough is enough

Carp is obviously not NFL starter quality because there is no way that somebody who is can blow so many chances. After this many years in the league, he needs to be demoted to be motivated? This guy would have been a bust as a 7th round pick.

by Billito on Aug 12, 2010 6:42 PM CDT up reply actions

This would seem to destroy the argument that he was a bad fit for Wade’s 3-4, but would thrive in the right environment. I don’t wish the guy ill, but I do think the evidence is pilling up that he just didn’t have what it takes to be an NFL linebacker. That’s not a knock on him as a person, just a comment that he doesn’t have that extremely rare combination of physical skills and mental toughness.

It's not a knock on him as a person. Sounds like he is a great guy. Romo loves the dude.

but as a football player, he is a bust. in a 3-4, 4-3, or any other system.

I have always wondered

if people would have been less harsh on him if he had just cut that hair.

It certainly might have avoided a rather embarassing nickname.

I've never had a problem with the hair or called him by the nickname. That's not why he is soft in my eyes

I couldn’t care less about his hair. Look at Barber, people love his dreads, which is braided long hair. Anyone want to tell him that braids aren’t manly??? Not me! lol Their hair is their decision. Can be something that defines you, like Michael Strahan’s horrible teeth! lol

Damnsammitt,

It’s not about being offended. It’s about standard of discourse on the blog. Rafael used to have a general guideline that we should post knowing that there are young kids who like to read the blog and they should be able to do that without reading x-rated words.

Also, there are all sorts of ways we can be critical of things and even poke fun at each other without having to resort to bad language. The reliance on cussing to make a point only reveals the poster to be immature, uncreative and ignorant. There are plenty of other football blogs you can visit that are perfectly happy to be composed of swearing and flame wars. This blog is different and the vast majority here like it this way.

by Luke. on Aug 13, 2010 5:48 PM CDT up reply actions

I don’t really know why people don’t get that. I’m not offended by language at all, but I understand the rules and abide by them.

If the posters here annoy you please feel free to not comment or even leave. Perhaps you could start you own blog with your own set of guidelines that encourage things you like. Things like the use of manly tough guy language in an attempt to make pointless sentences sound authoritative and the inclusion of completely non-football related moronic and uninformed political and religious generalizations.

Football analysis does not come very natural to you. Your use of the English language is atrocious. The only thing I have seen from you so far are pathetic attempts at childish insults with words that are at least 5 levels above your own comprehension. I figured if you could use Google to find the word, I could use Google to look it up myself. By the way, I am a not-so-old timer type of old timer. I was taught respect for the greater good, and passion for the things you love. At the same time, I seem to have mastered the one thing that you are unable to achieve at such a youthful age, the ability to actually discuss football instead of insult the intelligence of the fans posting here. Oh, and I do it as a Saints Fan at that.

I really hope the blogs you post on your own site are better than the attacks and insults you attempt to register here. If not, you will end up blogging by yourself.

I think Mayhew has them on the right path. The Lions will be much, much better but I dont necessary believe it will show up in the win-loss column. I cant see them winning more than 5 or 6 games but should be competetive in most.

Well I'm hoping for 7+

Since a buddy gave me 2:1 odds on that. And I made a bit of a wager. Really think they are primed for a great season with Best playing exceptionally, the major improvements on the D-Line, and Stafford could be a top 10 fantasy QB this year if the line gives him time to throw.

And I’m a father, a husband, and a professional. A bit past the “teen” stage in the life-cycle, too.

I have a disease though. There is a tumor on my brain that makes me behave like an asshole because I can’t civilly connect with the majority of people on a personal level.

I think the talent is there but being young they will lose some they shouldnt.

GB and Minn are loaded(even without Farve) and I think a high percentage of 2nd year players struggle. Stafford will have growing pains. I think he will be a good one but he has a few more knocks coming 1st.

Well if the line can keep him off his back and healthy...

Then he should get to show a lot more. Having Nate Burleson come should help CJ shine even more. Add in Schefler and the budding 1st rounder they got with Pettigrew, plus Best and you are talking about a lot of talent in their skill positions.

I have a feeling that offense is going to be tough to stop.

Dallas in its 90 season was very similar with rookie Emmitt

2nd year QB Aikman, 3rd year Irvin,(HOFers) and a bevey of high round unproven talent. They went 6-10. You have to learn how to win too. Its not always making the big play but learning to avoid the big mistake.

its still a mistake to think detroit will take off like we did

their oline needs a lot of work. As does their D.

Add in that they play in a division with the Vikings and Packers, two teams that will make Staffords life absolutely miserable while being able to put points on the board, and I find it hard to think the Lions will win 7 or more games.

But anything is possible in this league I guess. Well except for the Bills making the playoffs.

I think 5 is the smart money. They have gotten better and know I dont think they are close to our old Cowboys.

My point was as great as that talent was(and history proved it) they could only win 6.
I do think Mayhew has improved them and they seemed to have 2 pretty good drafts. Of course following Matt Millen cant help but make anyone look like a genius.

Carp or Baron aren't starter in this league.

Both players might hang around the league for a while, but they are first round bust and backups at best. Happens all the time, that’s why the NFL needs a rookie cap.

well these guys aren't the problem

it’s the Ryan Leafs, and even Alex Smith’s of the NFL, top 10 picks, especially QBs, who’s entering contracts are outrageous

The problem is the early draft choices are over paid.

It takes money away from the vets that deserve it. Revis with the NYJ is prime example, he’s the best CB in the league and is going to make about a million bucks. Some of these rookies are guaranteed 30 times that and have never played a down in the NFL. How much did Russell walk away with? It will take the Raiders years to get over that miss. It’s better for the league, the players and the fans if something is done.

The later picks ie Carp

aren’t that much of a problem. Carp really didn’t make too much here if memory serves me correctly. But the ridiculous, seemingly exponentially rising salaries in the top 10 is a huge concern.

For excellent use of sarcasm.

AFB Condensed- New name, same flavor.

Quoting yourself doesn't require your own name attached to it. I'm going to assume if there isn't anyone else's name attached it's yours.
