CBSSports.com Presents Fantasy Football Projections (Def/ST)
CBSSports.com is SB Nation's fantasy football partner. SB Nation has a deal with CBSSports.com offering their Fantasy Football Commisioner leagues at half-price. If you're interested in purchasing a league for the price of $90, make sure you do it through this link so BTB gets the credit. You get lots of cool features with the league.
This week's projections concern the defense/special teams position. According to the CBSSports.com projections, they see the Cowboys defense/special teams as the #12 unit with 16 INTs, 13 fumble recoveries and 46 sacks. The 46 sacks projection would lead the league.
While the Cowboys defense was very good last year in terms of regular football production (they were second to the Jets in points allowed), in fantasy, the sacks, turnovers and points scored from the defense are an important element. Dallas did very well in terms of sacks and that shouldn't change this year. DeMarcus Ware is going to get his, we're expecting a jump in Anthony Spencer's production, and the slew of rookie and second-year linebackers could also make an impact. Where the Cowboys need to improve if they are to become an elite fantasy defense is in the turnover category. They were in the middle of the pack for fumble recoveries and near the bottom of the league in interceptions in 2009.
So what say you? Can the Dallas defense make the jump this year and become a defense that not only limits points and get sacks, but also produces in the turnover category?
Consider this an open thread to discuss Fantasy Football.

Defenses are a cap shoot
Who expected New Orleans and Green Bay to be amazing fantasy defenses last year at this time? Or Cincy.
Interceptions and sacks vary from year to year. I expect the Cowboys to place better, but I still don’t think they create enough turnovers to be worthy of coveting.

I’ve had two drafts so far this year and the Dallas d has gone top five both times.
Don't believe everything you think.
Your causes are cute!!!
I really believe the Cowboys will have an elite defense this season health permitting
and therefore I think everybody should be able to steal them in the later rounds provided however their any other fans in your league that know better.
Ball in the secondary and the continued improvement of Spencer will definitely improve sack and INT totals.
In Romo we Trust
not to mention Bryant being our primary returner on ST
I think he’ll be the most productive for us in this area as he learns the WR position
In Romo we Trust
Ball will help with turnovers?
He has zero in his career. Has he even touched a ball so far in the preseason?
I don’t expect this team to excel in turnovers, that’s not who these secondary personell are.

I do
Ball hasn’t played that much so far which is why his INT total is zero. He will be starting every game so I fully expect at least 5 INTs this year at the very least, hopefully more.

There's nothing wrong with hope
but don’t confuse hope for predictive analysis.

Agreed
Outside a couple of new starters, the D has been working together for a couple years now.
If we stay healthy, the D Line is Great, Linebackers are Fantastic, and the Secondary is Above Average. Pressure will help the Secondary, hopefully.
Tap the brakes on D-Line
Olshansky and Hatcher were getting beat man-up pretty badly in the run game by the Chargers. Then they double-teamed Ratliff to take him out of the play.
If you can beat both our defensive tackles man-up and push Ratliff back with a double-team every play we’re going to have a hard time stopping the run.
Let’s hope it was just camp legs, because the tackles were getting completely owned in that game.

Agreed
My thoughts exactly. They also seem to be putting a premium on turnovers more this year than last and it doesn’t hurt that the players are buying into that.
We already know we can hold Offenses to minimal points. Just hoping we do what we say and fly to the ball and take it!
I think
the sacks won’t be an issue. I’m really hoping the safeties do well, cause I think that will lead to more INTs and such.
I think they’ll be a solid fantasy D this year. Probably not the best, but probably top 6.
Dallas is a tough defense to take
because three-and-outs do not necessarily equal fantasy points. Which is fine with me. I don’t want them on the field that long.
the leagues I play in award low yardage and point totals
and 3 and outs do contribute to those points.
In Romo we Trust
Low yardage total leagues are rare
Fantasy defenss = turnovers and sacks.
You also get some fantasy points for keeping the score down, but fantasy defenses hinge on turnovers — something this defense doesn’t do that well. We get lots of sacks, we’re not a bad fantasy defense. But the lack of turnovers keeps the Cowboys from being elite in fantasy.

Its best to just play Defenses by matchups week to week
But Im drinking the kool aid and think Dallas D will be elite this year too. Spencer being a big part of the reason and Mike Jenkins there other.
Though I tend to stay away from Dallas players in fantasy I dont need a double whammy and lose in both worlds
Really?! Really?!
Newman
also seems to be making more aggressive breaks on the ball.

Good, but can he snatch it out of the air. When Newman 1st came into the league, someone said "he's right there
when the ball arrives, but he doesn’t seem to know what to do with his hands." Or something close to that. IMO, he just doesn’t seem to have great hand eye coordination, at least not on a ‘Prime-time’ level. The catching the ball part may be hard hands. I don’t know if they can coach ‘soft hands’, but if Newman is ever going to move in to the elite corps. of corners, he must hang on to the ball when it’s available to him. Otherwise, he’s still a very good CB.
Family, Friends, Cowboys, Beer & BBQ. Life is good!
I like taking players from other NFC East teams.
That way I will probably jinx them, which is good for our Boys.
I stay away from them like the plague
otherwise I feel too dirty and luckily there aren’t many really good fantasy players on the Skins, Eagles or Giants.

My first Draft so far
I did end up taking Celek from the Eagles. Normally I wouldn’t draft anyone from the NFC East, except for a few Cowboys, but I needed a TE and Celek was the best available.
Steve Smith is a good PPR guy
and I definitly would have to take Desean Jackson if he’s close, but I try to avoid them at all costs.
AFB Condensed- New name, same flavor.
Quoting yourself doesn't require your own name attached to it. I'm going to assume if there isn't anyone else's name attached it's yours.
Thanks to Steve Smith for helping me win my league
Put out a late round flier on him in the draft, stashed him, cahsed in big. 11th round pick turns into the 8th best fantasy reciever? Thanks!

I've got the Dallas defense in one league along with Anthony Spencer as my IDP.
It’s 4 pts per sack/INT, so he should help get me double-points. And yes, Ware was already taken.

I think if Terrence Newman is focused on turning
Passes Defensed in to INTs, then it will happen. He’s always been good enough, just playing it slightly safe. I would not be suprised if T_New pulls in 5 ints.
I also expect Mike Jenkins to get around 4 or 5, and our Safeties to do way better than getting one. I’m seeing between 2-5 Ints for who ever ends up starting
I dont see TNew changing much
Only if hes learning from Jenkins. Heres what I think will happen
Spencer becomes a dominant force and the pass rush takes the step to elite/legend.
Jenkins continues his trend of shutdown corner but he doesnt get the rep like revis so QBs still test him and he makes them pay.
Scandrick turns all those passes that got by him by a hair into INTs or atleast some of them.
Ball and Sensi stay avg or better to let the rest of the D do its thing.
Really?! Really?!
every year I take the Ravens and every year they are one of the top D's
doesn’t matter who their D-coord is
Ravens D will be even better, since their
Offense is improving with quality additions of talent
