I'm refusing to push the dang button!

A couple of OLineman are struggling (Gurode and Davis)?

Whoa! Who would have thought about it? I hadn't seen them struggling, so if they're struggling now, they're done! It's over! They should be traded for a couple of donuts because in the end Costa or Bright are as good or better!

Ok, let's take a deep breath.

Did you saw something new? Those two guys also struggled in a Playoff game recently, but those 2 guys can also play at a pretty high level, pretty much elite, but the lows are easier to see.

I don't like them because they're inconsistent and how can you trust someone that is that wildly inconsistent? But, the thing is, the Cowboys CAN use them to win games because they've won games with them in the lineup and they aren't anymore inconsistent than they were. We can only hope that they become less.

Out of seeing those games you think that they're more inconsistent? Well, how do you deal with an inconsistent performer at anything? With focus and preparation.

What's the common thing in PRESEASON? Lack of focus and preparation for games.

Call me unimpressed by their struggles.

The Defense suddenly can't stop anyone?

No blitz packages, staying in the 3-4 pretty much full time and pretty much everything vanilla football on Defense makes you think about.

Reality: The Cowboys use a lot of blitzes, against the pass and run, and they aren't using them.

Reality: The Cowboys used the 3-4 in around 40 or 50% of the snaps last year and they couldn't use some specialty packages that Wade has used (like the Cowboys package) because he lacked depth at OLB. They're staying 3-4 in close to 80% of the snaps right now.

Call me steadfast, call me homer, call me opinionated, I just refuse to hit the dang button.

GO COWBOYS!

Oh Hell Yeah!!!

Buehler had the chance to try at least 2 fgs,no attempts. That tells me that they are playing very close to the vest. 4 young safeties on the field and we play single high safety = trying to make the call on who to keep and who to cut easier.I was mad as hell about that game, but, once common sense took over and I replayed the game in my head, only one answer is possible.PRESEASON,looking at players and situations.COWBOYS RULE!!!

Nice post Chandus.

And it’s something I’ve commented on countless times over the last several years. This Oline is up and down because the mainstays are inconsistent players (Gurode, Davis, Colombo and Flow when he was here). As individuals they’ve all had some really good games but it only takes one Olineman to be having a bad game and the whole offense can unravel (e.g. Minnesota).

Davis is a boom or bust lineman. If he gets a hold of you he’ll knock you out of the play. If he gets a good shot on you while he’s on the move he’ll blast you 5 yards back. Problem is he isn’t quick or flexible (getting low on short yardage is problematic and quick interior rushers can beat him) and is often fooled by stunts and delayed blitzes.

Gurode has some similar issues as Davis (especially stunts and delays) though not as bad overall. Gurode can put together a real solid string of games and when he’s on he can be dominant.

Colombo is simply limited athletically. Multiple knee/leg operations on a 6’8" 320 pound frame will do that to you. He was limited in 2006 when he first started and he’s limited now in 2010 after more surgeries. He is a gamer and can have some good games but if we had to role without Houdini at QB for an extended period it would be plain to everyone that Colombo gets beat more often than Romo lets us know.

The fact is Dallas hasn’t had a good all-around Oline since the mid-nineties.

Having said that, I agree with Chandus. We can win many games with this team and Oline just as we’ve won many games the last few years with this Oline. Once game-plans and health (hurry back Kosier) return they’ll look much better than they did out there in Houston.

But if the season does unravel late in the year I’d bet the house it’ll be the Oline leading the charge. In each of the last four years you can make a strong case that the Oline was the chief culprit of the season finishing short of what we’d like. And looked at as a collective there’s no doubt at all which unit on the team has been the most trouble over the last four years.

To steal a line from Parcells; it is what it is. Davis and Gurode are not going anywhere this year. Barring injury they’re our starters. That is our line and that’s just the way it is. We’ve done a poor job drafting lineman and paid a lot of money for a Guard who is not really worth it. Barron in for Colombo (if he struggles back from injury) might be the only realistic change we could see. Personally I’m all for that move and I hope Barron can add some athleticism and take the pass protection up a notch.

On a bright note Doug Free looks to be continuing his excellent play from last year and although I’m sure he’ll have a rough game or two as he gets used to the NFL LT spot, he surely looks like a great long term LT. The sad news is everyone to the right of him will need to go in the next year or two!

No, I already have this addon:

The REAL panic button

And I was staring at it while writing the whole thing… I’ll hit it when the time comes, which isn’t now.

Over 300 yards

Is how much the defense gave up in 34 minutes.

FU, I'm hitting the button!!

JK guys, but I really need to see a whole different team than I have to think we are going to the playoffs. Too me looks like same ole, same ole right now.

by bad knees on Aug 30, 2010 10:49 AM CDT reply actions

The first series for the defense

They put in McCray. A freaking undrafted rookie free agent, to start. No need to panic yet people. 300 yards is because of who they played and what they tried. I was at the game and it was very hard to be surrounded by Texan fans for the whole game, but know that our defense was anything but our full first team and we all know that when one starter is down, the whole team suffers.

Wait for Sensi to come back and the rest of our OL. The game looked bad, but I know our team will show its true colors in the regular season and hopefully the postseason.

Also of note, Igor Olshansky was hurt through most of the game. He constantly came back to the sideline and put ice on his arm and had it wrapped up. It was his left arm, right at the elbow. So, if you’re wondering why he looked so bad, that is probably the reason.

Just wondering...

when does hitting the button happen?

You can say you refuse to do it now, but what would it take to make you change your tune and hit it?

0-2?

1-4?

not even considering it until the season is done?

Yeah

Showing the same incapacity to run the ball, protect Romo and on Defense during the regular season would have me pushing the button in no time.

Right now, the sky ain’t falling.

Looking back to Rafael's and Dave's reports from TC

They said that they were looking good, real good on Offense and Defense, I’ll take their opinion over what we’re seeing in the games.

I know, some of that may happen because they know each other and are used to playing, but some of that may happen because they actually use things that they’re keeping under wraps and they actually prepare for those practices…

Some of that may be that are not playing an opponent and nobody is tackling or trying to hit Romo

If you’re saying they don’t prepare at all to play preseason games, well, I have no response to that.

Should they?
If you’re saying they don’t prepare at all to play preseason games, well, I have no response to that.

During the regular season, Mondays are for film study and for position coaches to explain their charges what they should pay attention to. On tuesdays they take what they saw on mondays to the field, the other days of the week is work on consequence, what can they do to beat what they saw.

That’s a lot of time.

How much do you think that they are spending in “preparation” for Preseason games? I’ll tell you what, from what I can remember by seeing evey preseason game in the last 5 or 6 years, with one hand I can count the situation in which I’ve said, that play required preparation (for example, one route and catch that Terry Glenn ran and Parcells went as far as to say: “Only 4 or 5 receivers in the League can run that route”, the year was 2005).

That seems to conflict with what I saw on Hard Knocks

Seems like they were talking about how each team would rush the passer, general terms about what the play calling would be, etc.

Has that changed?

Again

Do they spend as much time of preparation for preseason games as they do during the regular season?

No, and from watching the schemes and plays that they use in Preseason games it should be an extremely easy to reach conclusion…

You’re just basing your opinion on what you saw in a show that’s pretty much questionable as a source.

Yeah, no reason to really panic

I may be wrong, I haven’t watched the game since the first time(I might not be in panic mode, but I’m no glutton for punishment), but it looked like the D stayed in their base 3 4 the entire time, and the offense wasn’t even calling played based on the situation(down and distance, etc.). I think Houston took this one much more seriously than Big D.

It was tough to watch, but I took nothing from it. I don’t buy for a second that the coaches and players were treating this as the dress rehearsal for the real thing.

Romo did

just because a lot of them looked out of sorts doesn’t mean they didn’t care, look at their expressions on the bench, they looked embarassed.

Wade obviously showed nothing, I have no idea why a coach would coach a game that way, why bother to play the starters if you’re playcalling is going to allow the opposition to throw on you with ease.

by foyesboys on Aug 31, 2010 9:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Not concerned about the D for the reasons you stated

The oline has looked average at best, horrid at worst over the 1 full game its played in the preseason. I was absolutely concerned for Romo’s health last week.

I’m not in a “sky is falling” mode considering the injuries we’ve suffered to that unit, however I think by week 4 we’ll be saying that they’ve legiitmately declined and we’ll be finding it harder to score than last year.
