John Phillips Out For Season with Torn ACL

Photo

Our worst fears have been confirmed. The MRI results have come in on backup TE John Phillips' right knee and they show a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Before last night's game, the tight end position looked to be one of strength for the Cowboys. Now they will have to adjust accordingly, whether that means keeping an extra fullback or bringing in another TE.

Either way, this is a heavy loss after just the first preseason game. Here's TE coach John Garrett on the news:

"It's disappointing because he was having such a great camp and such a great game," tight ends coach John Garrett said after Sunday night's preseason win.

"But I know one thing: He's got great resolve. He's got great perseverance. If there's anybody going to come back even stronger than he was before, it'll be John Phillips."

Dude, that's a little presumptuous.

This team has depth, and TE is one of those spots they have depth. Other teams are suffering injuries out there. Even if it’s a star player, they’ve got to get through it no matter who is in.

Man this sucks....I was starting to like the upside of Phillips....

being a better #2 TE option than Bennett. I guess this means Sicko is just about a lock to make the team now….

That's the way I look at it.

I really wanted to see Sicko make the roster. Horrible that it happened this way but at leas it wasn’t another position I’ll leave unnamed

We'll be fine.

If anything, I’m just disappointed that we will not be able to see how much Phillips has matured as a player. There will one day be a decision made concerning keeping Phillips or Bennett.
Phillips has shown more progress than Bennett has and would have been an impact player this year. I feel bad for the kid.
Let’s hope Bennett comes to work.

I tend to agree

Phillips was becoming a dependable player. Bennett is clearly the superior athlete, but that doesn’t always translate onto the football field.

do they really need to bring in another TE?

Come on, Bennett will be back soon and he’s better than Phillips. I don’t know the severity of Brock’s injury but he’s not a stiff. Sicko has some promise, but he needs to improve his strength.

by Rafael Vela on Aug 9, 2010 11:09 AM CDT reply actions

if Brock can bring the wood like you said he could

we could still have a position of strength.

an unintended benefit is that we don’t have to put one of our guys out there to be snatched up off of the practice squad. I’d still rather have Phillips.

I'd hope not.

Would rather see the Sickster and Brock (Lesnar?) battle it out and keep the Big Gronkowski in their back pocket.

All the stories out there are suggesting they are “suddenly thin” at TE though.

Bennett maybe more talented.

But he’s a mental midget.

That’s not the usual make up of a great TE.

The mental part of the game is what separates those with natural talent from greatness.

I was hoping Phillips could hold down that second TE position so we could trade Bennett before he does something stupid enough to get him self suspended.

I just don’t think he takes the game or life that serious.

Hated the pick from day one.

I could care less about his tweets or his videos.

That doesn’t mean a damn thing on the football field. I’ve seen plenty of football players that were great on the field but could barely speak English of it.

You say he can’t get into the passing game, I saw “what more do you want”.

Witten caught 94 passes for 1,030 yards last season. Austin had well over 1,000 yards. The Cowboys had over 2,000 yards rushing as a team.

How much of an impact are you expecting Bennett to make? He was MONEY in the blocking game last season, and that was insanely important to this offense.

woman !, dont try to understand em, dont try to make them understand you, for they are a breed apart ! lol

by demonbane on Aug 9, 2010 1:23 PM CDT up reply actions

I understand that.

What I’m saying is that the fact that he only caught 15 last season doesn’t mean he can’t catch 40-50 if given a chance. It was disappointing, sure, but there just weren’t enough balls to go around to give him that chance last year.

And of course there’s going to be a dropoff from Witten to ANYBODY. The guy is the best in the game at what he does.

Look, I’m not giving up on Bennett. Do I think Phillips had a shot to be a legitimate #1 down the line…of course. That doesn’t mean that Bennett can’t either.

My whole point is that I think it’s unfair to look at his statistical production last season and say he’s a bust — or whatever. You have to look at the big picture.

What if Witten goes down?

Bennett isn’t close to being a do it all guy like Witten. And he scoffs at the notion of looking up to, or learning from Witten. He’d rather watch film on Andre Johnson, which apparently isn’t helping him at all on catching passes.

Sure he does a good job blocking, maybe he just needs to be a little more humble.

well lets see what Bennett can prove in his 3rd year

Phillips & Ogletree were rookies last year & both made catches that were important to keeping drives alive. Ogletree always seems to make great catches & seems to be in the right area, which is a good sign. Crayton has peaked in his career & Ogletree’s has just started…
Bennett should have his “breakout” year this year & if he’s ever going to make it on this team he’ll have to prove it this season. Bennett has more pressure now bc he doesn’t Phillips to take up his slack. we drafted Bennett to be a pass catching TE & so far he hasn’t been dependable
Phillips was a 6th rd pick that stepped right in & made great blocks, picked up the offense quick & made some clutch catches to keep drives alive so far bennett hasn’t been worth a 2nd rd pick. this is where drafting athletic freaks for potential over players with knowlwdge to understand quicker with slightly lesser measurables.
judging from last year i would pick Phillips over Bennett just bc you know phillips is going to get the job done. with Bennett you have no clue what your going to get.
also people see things differently & it doesn’t make 1 person right & the other wrong. opinions are what the comment section of blogs are for.

what he has, hoping to find a TE that can fill in for Phillips or come close to his production is a waste of time, unless of course they can find a Mike Lucky or an ex cowboy TE who get’s cut loose before the season.
…And don’t get me wrong if a Crumpler or somebody of that ilk comes free fine, but still if you have 2 FBs that can block and catch a little, why can’t JG come up with a wrinkle for them.I’m sure his mentors(Norv+Ernie) would have been able to use them.Hell I could probably come up with some plays that would work. So 5 how many blockers do we need?

Witten and MartyB are blockers w/very good recieving skills,Sicko would be the pass catcher+G’ski is a very good blocker and played FB/HB/TE @ ‘Zona,so we have 3 TE’s+ a hybrid in Grankowski.Besides what good is bringing in another project TE for anything other than a camp body which would slow ’Ski’s development in his move to help that position.

We don't need a special use player

We need a strong blocking tight end to facilitate our power running game. 3rd string TEs in this league don’t catch passes because they don’t need to. Their first and foremost responsibility is to block well and open up the running lanes.

Phillips could do that. The fact he was a great reciever was just a bonus. Sick can catch… he’s got the bonus. But does he have the basic requirement blocking skills to be useful to our running game?

Can we really count on MB?

Think about it. VERY inconsistent last year, and his focus seems to be elsewhere. Yes he’s a mamoth TE with great potential but how many players are out there with seemingly “great potential”?

Until MB steps up and starts making plays, moves the chains, catches those short 5-10 yard passes on a consistent bases and makes holes for the RB’s, he’s really just another TE “with potential”. and then unleashing Marty B up the field more this season.

Hang on

how much were you counting on John Phillips for?

Jason Witten is the number one. He’s gonna catch 85-95 balls. Miles Austin is gonna get his. Roy and Dez will get theirs.

The 2nd F-back needs to block and catch about 25 balls or so.

MB can do this just as well as Phillips. The guy is being rightfully shut down to get his ankle to full health. All I have is what I see, and the guy had a week where he and Phillips both praticed together. Bennett blocked better and got up the field better and he was gimpy after every catch.

I don't think it's about effort at all

the only negative that’s been said about Marty has referred to “focus”. And by that I think we can all infer knowing where to be on the field and what to do when you get there. He is either just slower on the uptake or he hasn’t put in the mental reps. But he’s not lazy. The guy works hard and busted his butt doing THE least glamorous thing a TE is asked to do – block.

by dunkman on Aug 9, 2010 12:24 PM CDT up reply actions

I think you're pretty right on with that assessment

He has the desire to perform well, and he puts his all into blocking. His problems in the pass game are part focus, and partly that you can’t tell guys like Bennett ANYTHING. It’s more personality than mental horsepower, but they get (and sometimes stay full time) in a zone where anything you tell them goes in one ear and out the other. The passing game carries much more intricacy, and I’m afraid all the nuances being handed down by Garrett, Witten and others on how to succeed in this area are just bouncing off into the ether.

3rd TE is Block-first TE

Your 3rd TE isn’t put in there to catch passes. How many passes did all the 3rd TEs in the league catch combined last year? Probobly fewer than Jason Witten.

Your 3rd TE need to be a mauling blocker, it’s a run-first formation. The ball was run 2/3rds of the time out of the 13 formation and passed only 1/3rd of it. And the number of those targets to the 3rd TE? Maybe three.

Phillips should be out lead blocker this year and second TE…so it hurts much then you think

Yes, he hasnt Bennett"s upside, but he is hardworker, who is doing his job better than one of the most athletic TE in a league…

Per David Moore, MNN

“I thought [McGee] did a nice job,’’ Garrett said. "I thought he handled some different situations well.

It wasn’t always clean, but I thought he used his feet well. I thought he got the ball out of his hand and made some good, quick decisions. He threw it to the right guy, threw it accurately and played decisively. We’ll go back and look at it play by play and see some areas where he can get better. But I thought his command was good.’’

Kitna is a detroit product in a Dallas uniform....

so in fact is RW for that matter. And that losing mentality needs to change.

I don’t see Kitna leading this team into the playoffs if something happens to Romo. He doesn’t have that quality in him. If Romo goes down, so do the Cowboys. It’s just that simple.

I agree

McGee is nothing more than a project player. You don’t see many of those leading teams into the playoffs. What this team needs to do in that area is put a priority on a quality backup and that means a good draft. You can’t always draft a HOF qb but you can find one that can take you further than most.

I was in Canton for the game last night...

John Phillips looked spectacular. We all saw what he did last year in his limited time and that was to produce. During the game last night he looked like Witten running those crisp routes and catching everything thrown to him. Even during warmups I had to turn to my Dad and talk about how awesome he was looking. Witten would run a route, catch a pass easily and Phillips would do just the same. They both made everything look easy. There was one play where it looked like Phillips missed a tight end screen and was caught blocking while Kitna threw at his back though. Still, he was impressive and will definately be missed.

Sicko on the other hand looked great too, but man does he look tiny. Not in terms of build, but he is definately several inches shorter than most TE’s and WR’s. He did make some nice catches and looked like a very solid player, though it came against some B-grade competition. Another plus is definitely his name. So awesome to hear the announcer say “and the reception by Sicko” and then listen to the crowd laugh hysterically that we had a TE named Sicko.

Also, awesome showing by our Cowboy fans!! The mayor of Canton declared Saturday as the official Dallas Cowboys day and we were definitely the home team at the game Sunday night. I would say it was 70% Cowboy fans. Funny to hear the announcer say “introducing the home team, the Cincinnati Bengals” to a stadium of boos. Excellent speech by Mr. Emmitt Smith as well. He is truly in a class of his own as a player and human being and it was certainly an honor I will never forget in watching his induction to the pro football hall of fame.

going in the sametime as Emmitt might overshadow Emmitt. It turned out to be just the opposite.

by DIRE WOLF on Aug 9, 2010 12:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Didnt expect Jerry to take such a back seat

As the greatest receiver of all time, perhaps football player in general, and known for his extreme work ethic I really expected both players to have excellent speeches and neither to outshine the other. Emmitt was absolutely more prepared and given that he was a Dallas Cowboy had way way more fans in attendance. It was clearly the Emmitt show all along. Rice did give a good speech, but you can tell that public speaking is not his specialty nor is it expected out of a football player. However, Emmitt was as awesome as he always is while Floyd Little, Dick LeBeau and Russ Grimm delivered excellent speeches as well.

by neon greon on Aug 9, 2010 12:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Rice did not give a good speech

He sounded borderline illiterate.

Kudos to the NFL for not embarrassing an all-time great by making him not follow up Emmitt. Whoever made this decision should get a raise.

Hmm,

According to NFL.com, Sicko is 6’4. Phillips and Witten are both 6’5 and Bennett is 6’6, so he’s not that short, but he is shorter than our other guys. Brock is listed at 6’5, too.

by Baked Potato Soup on Aug 9, 2010 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions

I didnt know what he was listed at

but he definitely looked short out there. Especially when Phillips would come off the field and he would go in and when he would line up next to the linemen. When across from some of those big DE’s of Cincinnati, it looked like he would get manhandled but I think he did a good job. He was fast, had good hands, and got open so that is what matters.

But he was turning into a darn good football player, and I always hate losing those. This team will miss his devotion to improving, and his physical skills. We need more players just like him. Wish we could find someone like Phillips for the O-line. Yes, we have great talent on offense, and will probably be just as prolific without him, but Phillips was one of our own, and I for one, will miss that guy. Get well, John.

What about the FG kicker situation?

I’m sure the coaches will give Beuhler every chance to earn the job, but if he’s not the man there will be a lot of FG kicker cut towards the end of training camps. Dallas needs an 80% kicker from 40 – 50 yards. They can’t afford to lose games because of a subpar FG kicker.

Injuries.....

are most part of the game. Basically 9-12 months of private gruelling which I hope is successful for Phillips.

I’d still trade Bennett for the top pick that was offered last year. Keep Sicko, Brock and perhaps the extra full-back who might fit in sets at TE.

2nd Stinging Injury

You know you’re going to take injuries in camp, it’s just the nature of the game. But you want to minimize bad injuries.

In my opinion, this is the 2nd injury that really stings.

Dez Bryant losing the whole camp stung, that stings that he can’t get worked into the offense and hit his stride for the regular season.

John Phillips stings, he is so promising and creates so many matchup problems for defensive coordinators with him, Witten, and Marty B all going out in routes with a wide reciever over top. That loss really stings.

So far no crippling injuires. Nothing like Baltimore and Denver have had to face. But we’ve now had 2 stinging injuries with 4 games to go… this is not where we want to be as a team at this point.

In hindsight

Sure, I wish they had selected him, not only would it have helped Dallas in ways we can only imagine, but it would have kept us from having to watch him destroy our defenses every time we played MIN. The flip side is there are plenty of guys who had character issues that ultimately kept them from being successful. Antonio Bryant comes to mind as a good example.

I’m glad that Jerry, Stephen, and Tom C have committed to going after the talented guys who are also team leaders and hard workers. It’s a good strategy for building a championship quality team.

Although disappointing for Phillips

because he does show a lot of potential, if losing your 3rd string TE to a season ending injury is the worse thing that happens this off season, we’ll be in great shape.

So long as the injury bug stays away from premier players, I’ll be happy.

In Romo we Trust

It sucks that Phillips went out but I completely agree with those on here arguing for Bennett as the better of the two.

The guy was an integral, and I mean integral, part of that 2-TE set. Just think about how the plan was for Fasano to be that #2 guy and how he never could make it work because of his lack of blocking. Bennett was the guy that finally provided the Cowboys the formation flexibility with his blocking and receiving acumen to create the lethal 2-TE packages we used all last year. Bennett catches a lot of heat for his videos and some of the drops last year but all in all I still can’t think of a TE tandem that I would rather have than Witten and Bennett. I hope Phillips comes back strong next year but this is a hurtle that can easily be overcome. As an additional note I hope Kevin Brock comes back soon from his ankle injury. He looks like an absolute beast when you see him up close. When I was at camp I had to look up his number because I couldn’t believe I didn’t recognize the guy who was so big and strong looking.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

Bennet can't be trusted

He may have all the talent in the world. But he was moved to #3 behind Phillips at the end of last year because he ran whatever route he wanted – not what the play called for.

by JimmyJohnson on Aug 9, 2010 4:51 PM CDT up reply actions

He was never the #3 TE behind Phillips. Only in some people's minds on here was he #3.

Phillips caught that TD against because he was off the line just like a 3rd string TE would be. Bennett is still the better player. He is a better more dynamic receiver and is maybe one of the top five blocking TEs in the league. And if you really want to bring Phillips’s training camp into the discussion than I can bring in Bennett’s training camp from last year (maybe the most impressive camp performance by a Cowboys second stringer in the last ten years). Does Bennett have many quirks? He sure does but its amazing how some people can forget about how Bennett made many more plays than Phillips in their respective rookie years. Phillips is good in my opinion but let’s tone down on the hyperbole for a guy who has a career 62 yards receiving in the NFL.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

I think there is truth to both sides

Bennett is a far superior athlete. His upside is greater than Phillips’. He was the number 2 in terms of complementing Witten by blocking out of his mind. But… by the end of the season, the TE they called on in the playoffs, in the red zone to catch a pass from Romo on a roll-out was not Bennett. That’s not an accident either. Bennett lost the confidence of coaches and the QB to be in the right place at the right time as a receiver. It is now up to him to earn that back. Shoot, Kosier would be a better TE if he executed the play the way it was supposed to be and Bennett didn’t. He was fine in his rookie season because like all rookies in complicated positions, I’m sure they limited his responsibilities.

So… Bennett is the better talent, but if he doesn’t do what he needs to do to be on top of the mental aspects of the game, he’ll be passed by guys like Phillips and Sicko. I suspect that this is the year, one way or another.

I tried to write a better way to say this

but I think ultimately that TD against Philly wasn’t as much about Phillips as it was just being a great misdirection design with the fake to Barber and keeping Witten and Bennett in on the left side to make sure Tony stayed upright. While I agree the team obviously trusted Phillips enough to be the sole option I don’t really see that as a clear sign that Bennett wasn’t trusted since even Witten was kept in to block.

Plus, the biggest factor that speaks to the Bennett versus Phillips debate is the fact that in that same Philly game it was Witten and Bennett who were the 2-TEs and not Witten and Phillips. If the disparity in trust really was that significant I find it doubtful they would have kept Bennett in the number two slot.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

by Cowboyfan729 on Aug 9, 2010 9:15 PM CDT up reply actions

But Bennett didn't get many looks at all at the end

in any situation. I’m not saying he’s a bust or can’t cut it. But they stopped putting him in a position to catch passes by the end of the year for a reason. I want him to overcome this in the worst way because he could make this offense unstoppable. But his head will have to take him there. And as Raf points out, a lot of guys take a couple of seasons to put it all together, so there’s no reason to panic just yet.

I agree with not panicking

but Bennett caught 3 balls for 27 yards in the Minnesota game. I just don’t really buy the fact that Romo and JG clearly didn’t trust him down the stretch. Did they trust others more? Yeah probably. Austin and Witten were playing at extremely high levels. At the same time though I think Bennett was going to get the ball even if he got open like he did in Minnesota.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

by Cowboyfan729 on Aug 10, 2010 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with Dunk's point

Down the stretch last season, Bennett and Roy were phased out of the plans in favor of Ogletree and Phillips, and I don’t think it was a case of trying to trick defenses, it was about who the coaches trusted more to make plays.

John Garrett himself said, when asked about Bennett’s regression last season, that Bennett’s lack of confidence more than anything was why he struggled. I think Dunk hit on the reason why his confidence was lacking. As a rookie , he had less expected of him and less responsibility. As a 2nd year player, he was asked to do more and take on more responsibility. Jason Garrett’s system requires the TE’s to do a lot, second only to QB as far as difficulty. It wouldn’t be surprising that Bennett would struggle with it, especially coming from the simplified system at A&M. He might not have been ready to take that next step last season (plus he did suffer thru some injuries that could have hindered him). This season he has to show he can handle everything, or else he might just not be a fit in Dallas’ system. Phillips however, looks like a definite fit, and I expect he and Witten can lock up the top 2 spots at TE if MartyB can’t handle it.

Not bagging on Bennett, just my take on why he was disappointing last season, and why he might be much better this season.

Thank you #22, for everything you did for the Cowboys. There will never be another one like you.

by APerfectStar on Aug 10, 2010 12:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I can't speak to Bennett's mindset

but I think there is no question he is a fit for Dallas’s system. They drafted him to essentially create the 2-TE monster we used last year since even a good TE like Anthony Fasano didn’t have the blocking and receiving acumen to pull off that role. And don’t get me wrong, I like Phillips a lot, but the guy is just not the blocker that Marty B is. Bennett has 12 pounds on the guy and was hands down a top 5 blocking TE last year. Did he look a little more lost in the passing game? Yes he did. But he still had 3 catches against Minnesota in the final game of the year and I think that alone kind of pokes holes in this “Bennett didn’t have Tony’s trust” theory.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

Bennett is better athleticly

but its a stretch to say he’s the better player. if you want to compare it like that then you could say Bennett is better then Witten. dont let athletic ability fool you over the total package. in his 2nd year RoMo was still having to call timeouts to get him in position or pointing to tell him where to go. i haven’t see many mistakes out of Phillips & he’s been clutch whenever his number was called. bennett has this year to prove himself & hopefully he gets the job done. if not then we’ll make a better decision next draft

Guys This is Just a Wild Thought

but Matt Jones looked pretty good last night. He is about 6’ 6" and could be made into a TE.

He has also been one of JJ’s pet cats.I don’t know what Antnio Bryant’s status is but it looks like Shipley just made the team last night and Cosby is also one of thier return men so if they just keep 5 WRs Jones could be cut loose.

I don’t know how well he can block but I always thought blocking was a matter of desire not physicality.

Matt Jones is 6'6" 222lbs

And people say Scott Sicko(6’4" 255) isn’t built up enough to be a blocker yet.LOL

Desire is great…but you still need an anchor and strength to block and get a push. And that’s assuming Matt Jones would even have the desire to become a TE.

Terrell Hudgens (6’2", 225) has a better chance of converting to TE than Matt Jones IMHO.

That's not a bad thought

Hudgins being used as a part time TE. I’m sure his blocking would need a lot of work, but Shannon Sharpe started out as a WR who converted to TE. Interesting idea to keep in mind since Dallas is overstocked at WR.

Thank you #22, for everything you did for the Cowboys. There will never be another one like you.

by APerfectStar on Aug 10, 2010 12:36 PM CDT up reply actions

He's already shown a knack...

for making plays and reliable hands. His relative lack of speed would be hidden more as a TE. He’s already stockier than most WR’s, although I hear he’s cut down quite a bit of weight. If so, he’s used to playing at a higher weight so he could go back up again without too much difficulty.

But again, just like with Matt Jones, is there the desire/willingness to switch positions and all that entails? It might be worth a look if it gets to that point.

Who knew?

That Phillips catching an easy TD wide open in the end zone was so much more impressive than Bennett’s circus catch of a game-winning TD pass back in ‘08 against the ’Skins? Personally I thought the latter was more impressive but what do I know since I don’t follow Martellus on his Twatter or YouTube channels?

It’s madness to root against Martellus. Do you really want it to ultimately turn out that the Cowboys burned two 2nd rounders on the same position that they could’ve just as easily filled with a late-round guy like Phillips?

by MadMick on Aug 10, 2010 12:16 PM CDT reply actions

At this stage of post-trails, it's hard to tell who you'e mad at Mick

But no one is saying Phillips’ catch was impressive. And I don’t think most people would say that Phillips is or will ever be as athletically gifted as Bennett. The point about Phillips making the catch is that the coaching staff had more confidence in a rookie TE than Bennett. That means Bennett wasn’t the receiver he needed to be. Since it’s clearly not his ability, all that’s left is his football knowledge.

I don’t root against any Dallas players. Hopefully he’ll improve that aspect of the game and realize his potential instead of wondering whatever happened to Tellus?.

That's not good not they trusted a rookie more than Bennett down the stretch last season.

No argument there. And certainly the majority want to see Bennett realize his potential but as hasty as some folks are being it’s clear they just have a plaind hate-on for Bennett, whether it be his eccentricities or mental snafus on his routes and actively want to see Phillips permanently knock him down the depth chart; the sooner the better.

Personally, I’m a full-on Sickofant and think that in an ideal scenario Bennett would show enough this season to be flipped for a low 1st or high 2nd round pick; (crack)pipedream I know. That would be an easy deal to make with guys like Phillips and Sicko in the cupboard.

by MadMick on Aug 10, 2010 1:34 PM CDT up reply actions

I think before Bennett figures it all out he will be an ex-Cowboy..

Phillips just seems to be a better option as the #2 TE over Bennett. Just too bad Phillips is out for the year because I think we would’ve beat out Bennett over the course of the season. Jerry not trading Bennett to Cinci for a second round pick was a big mistake looking at it now….Im pulling for Bennett, but at this point he is a bust of a second round pick. Hopefully, he can put it together and prove alot of us wrong..

by Boyzfan94 on Aug 10, 2010 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions

My first choice is for Bennett to come around and make Dallas have to really think about

what to do with the young man. But if not, Dallas sure seems to have a knack for finding young TEs out there…

dont be a hater!

i dont think people are rooting against bennett, its just that when you take a guy in the 2nd rd you expect more & after seeing Hard Knocks i don’t think they were far off from what type of person he is.
to find a gem like Phillips in the 2nd rd just goes to show bennett wasn’t worth the 2nd rd pick & hopefully Jerry learned a lesson. their was a ton of bad knocks on Bennett coming out of college & they chose to ignore them thinking they could turn him around bu so far they haven’t.
also, even if it was a joke i had a family member die in 9/11 & i lost a lot of respect for him after that video. until he proves he’s not a pos & waste of a draft pick i have every right to write it like i see it. so far he was drafted way to early & was out played by a rookie 6th rd draft pick last year. i almost bet Bennett thinks this takes pressure off him bc he don’t have to fight for the #2 TE spot but in reality its putting his career on the line. i hope he does well but most of all i hope he grows up more then anything. i bet it wouldn’t have been funny if one of his family members jumped from a burning building bc the flames were worse then the fear of hitting the ground when they jumped multiple stories
