Cowboys Look Good In Final Preseason Game, Beat Dolphins 27-25

The pre-season is over! The Dallas Cowboys closed out a five game pre-season with a 27-25 victory over the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins played their starting unit at the beginning of the game, but the Cowboys second unit was able to hang tough and eventually the Cowboys got their offense going. In the end, they got a late drive from Stephen McGee and a last second FG from David Buehler to secure the 'W'.

A few quick observations after the jump:

Star-divide

- Stephen McGee looked very good in running the show. The third-string QB played the entire game and had his best showing yet. His stats: 27 for 42 for 304 yards and 1 TD. The TD was a picture perfect bomb to Sam Hurd, with both the pass and the catch of highlight quality. McGee was also efficient in running a two-minute drill just before the half leading to a FG. Then he was able to lead a drive in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter and set up the game-winning FG. Whatever questions the Cowboys may have had about McGee before the game, he did his best to answer them. The only question for the 'Boys is whether they carry two or three QBs going into the season. [Edit]: To quell any confusion, I wasn't suggesting they cut Jon Kitna for McGee, but decide whether they are going to carry McGee on the 53-man roster in addition to the other two.. [End Edit]

- David Buehler was impressive. There were questions about his ability to hit FGs, but in this game, he answered them. Buehler connected on four FGs, but more impressively hit one from 51 yards and one from 45 yards. Then, he capped it off with a short FG in the final seconds to win the game. A great showing from the new FG kicker.

- The Cowboys defense was able to generate some pass rush after the first drive by the Dolphins. Miami had a nice drive early in the first quarter, but the defense stiffened in the redzone and managed to hold the Dolphins to a FG. After that, they were getting pressure on the Miami QBs. Both Victor Butler and Sean Lee were able to get sacks and Lee scooped up a fumble after a QB sack. Butler continues to show an ability to rush the passer, and Lee continues to show good instincts.

- Kevin Ogletree had a good game, catching 6 passes for 51 yards. Sam Hurd had the highlight TD catch. The Cowboys decision at WR is going to be a tough one. Thrown into the mix is the rumor of the Cowboys seeking a trade for Patrick Crayton. The next couple of days will be interesting. Jesse Holley also had a good showing, but probably not enough to make a difference in terms of the 53-man roster.

- Robert Brewster had some problems at left tackle on the evening.

- AOA picked up an interception after pressure came from a linebacker blitz.

Overall, the Cowboys second and third units played well. It turned out to be a very entertaining game even though it was mostly backups. Stephen McGee and David Buehler both deserve a lot of credit for the victory.

If either guy is asked to put on a cape and save the season.

The season’s dicked anyways. I don’t even see any two-game respites on the schedule like the one Brad Johnson was thrown into (Rams and Sucs) this season. For example, the Lions are sandwiched between meetings with the Giants(away) and New Orleans. Not to mention that the Lions should be much improved and could boast a high powered offense. There are no soft spots on this schedule where I’d expect Kitna to go 2-1 if he has to fill in for three games.

by MadMick on Sep 2, 2010 10:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Kitna can go.

Who is he.

Career record
Wins 43
Losses 69

He’s 37 now.
He’s worse than Brad Johnson.
Without the ring and the playoff wins.

What can he tell Romo. Don’t do what I do.

you simply have no clue if you actually think he's worse than Johnson

Those two are like night and day as far as veteran backups are concerned.

The only hope would be.

Big plays via Felix, Dez or Austin and enough sustained drives or turnovers for Beuhler to tack on three field goals. 16-13 brawls.

McGee

Since this was the only game McGee got time with some quality players, lineman and skill position, I do not think this would be a wise move at this time. I wish McGee had gotten more time with the 1st or 2nd units earlier in the preseason.

Am I suggesting we cut Kitna?

Not at all, I’m suggesting they need to decide whether they carry all three, or move McGee to the PS. He still has eligibility there. I’m 99.9% sure Kitna will be our backup all season.

by Dave Halprin on Sep 3, 2010 7:47 AM CDT up reply actions

Too many people

seem to think that a team can just move a good player they want to keep to the PS for development. I know that 99%+ of the people here know that ANY team can claim a player off of any other team’s PS if they put him on their 53 man roster. The other 1% need to understand that you can’t expose a good prospect to what is, basically, the waiver wire with the exception that you’re keeping the guy around hoping he’ll eventually be good enough to make your own 53 man squad. When you try to hide a good prospect like this, you risk losing him. This is exactly why Matt Moore is playing for the Panthers and he’s not our backup right now.

Lastly, not just anyone can be put on the PS. I haven’t kept up with McGee. Is he even eligible? If he was on the 45 man game day roster for more than 6 or 7 games last season, I don’t think he’s eligible but it’s been awhile since I read the rules on PS eligibility.

The ’Boys definitely have some quality depth on defense. Offensive depth is not too bad but it good be better. Overall, I thought the backups, for the most part, played a very good game.

The problem still remains

As good as this team is from top-to-bottom, offensive line remains a major problem. Alex Barron had rough patches at RT, and he’s our best backup on the entire line. Imagine if Free and Colombo both went down. We would have NO chance of doing anything. We are in desperate need of another solid backup Tackle to pair with Barron. Montrae Holland looks like a complete waste of space. I’d love to read an in-depth report on how Travis Bright has looked at Guard this preseason. Maybe he can actually pass Holland. If so, we’re probably better off.

We have great depth everywhere except in one of the most critical areas of the team. Without a good o-line, the offense will be crippled and our great RB and WR depth won’t matter. Our QB depth will matter though! lol I just hope that once the o-line returns to being healthy, they’ll stay healthy and perform well.

by Key19 on Sep 2, 2010 10:42 PM CDT reply actions

For me the Oline and the depth is an enigma.

Unfortunately, when I watch a game, I watch the ball too much (even when I try not to) and do not concentrate on the individual offensive lineman enough. I only noticed one or two rough patches for Barron. I did however notice McQuistan getting shoved around, ala Proctor. I definitely believe the Oline is our weak link though.

Nearly impossible to get a good gauge on OL without some help from Tivo

Going back to watch the individual execution. I’ve gotten where I can pretty well concentrate on the guards and center and get a good gauge on the play from there in live action, but you really don’t know what’s what without a few replays.

by Iron Fist on Sep 3, 2010 9:55 AM CDT up reply actions

It's very hard to judge the backup OL

Because McQ was getting beaten so badly on every other play, it screwed the running game up, and led to several QB pressures. Barron is wildly inconsistent, he’s doing good one play, then gets blown by in pass protection on the next. I can see why the Rams gave up on him. And Holland needs to learn the snap counts. I will be glad to see Colombo and Kosier back asap.

Costa is the lone bright spot, and maybe Brewster, I don’t know about him.

Thank you #22, for everything you did for the Cowboys. There will never be another one like you.

Great game for the backups

Saw maybe half of the plays so my take is spotty.

McGee certainly took his opportunity and made the most of it. Showed a lot of poise, performed well. When you consider that this was his first real chance to play and get some rhythm since joining the team, he proved something. I think he will be a solid #2. Whether he could ever develop into Tony’s replacement remains to be seen, but at least it is conceivable.

The other young players got a chance to show their stuff. Now to see how the final few spots on the roster shake out, and then REAL FOOTBALL!

Watched most of the game

and it struck me that Mcgee never really put the football in extreme danger of being picked. When he has even a little time, he makes something happen. Maybe never getting good protection has forced him to make reads more quickly than normal. Whatever the reasons, he played the position well. I would have no problem running 2 QBs deep w/o Kitna in the mix.

Romo was in his third year when he became starter and went to the playoffs. McGee is only one year behind that, he deserves to stay on the roster. Kitna is on the bottom half of a downhill slope. Pull the plug.

Pirates Vs. Ninjas? Psh......Cowboys, baby.

by oneinsider on Sep 2, 2010 11:38 PM CDT reply actions

I'd be very surprised

one good preseason game is enough to justify continue to develop McGee on the roster, but it doesn’t mean he went from on the bubble to the sole backup in one game.

Kitna showed this preseason that he’s still got some arm and some leg and some head for the game, and he can run the offense reasonably well. He’s a quality backup (as well as a good mentor to McGee).

To me, despite the struggles this preseason, I think it did show us that we’re at a near ideal situation at QB. We have an elite starter, a capable veteran backup, and a promising developmental prospect for the future who has now shown that the effort and resources put into him so far have been worthwhile and he has a future with this team.

We don’t need to weaken ourselves at this most important position just to save one roster spot.

by RisingSunCowboy on Sep 3, 2010 12:25 AM CDT up reply actions

Anyone who thinks because of one (especially the last, when most starters don't play) preseason game

that McGee should be the 2nd string and Kitna should be cut must be high as a kite. Seriously, there is no arguing this position.

So Kitna has led more scoring drives in the preseason than Romo has. Let’s trade Romo!

by selke99 on Sep 3, 2010 1:09 AM CDT up reply actions

High is thinking the team isn't sunk if McGee or Kitna has to fill in for a 3-5 game stretch.

It’s a moot discussion point because the organization was probably deadset on rolling with three QB’s unless McGee just stunk up the joint something awful tonight.

by MadMick on Sep 3, 2010 1:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Kitna & McGee

yeah he would have had to have stunk it up pretty bad to be cut, but he did have an opportunity to prove himself so they have confidence and not just hope in him. but he had been unimpressive enough that rumors of him being on the roster weren’t totally incredible.

The reality in this league tho is that QBs are scarce. There aren’t enough quality starters to go around. QBs are starting who aren’t really starter quality. And lots of teams who have decent starters have a lot of questions at backup. Lots of prospective QBs never work out.

Considering the scarcity and what’s out there, Kitna is a pretty decent backup who is as good still as a lot of the starters in this league. He could go out and win as many games as several of the guys who are playing. So sure we’d love to have a sure thing lights out backup, but we’re lucky to have a guy who probably could start somewhere else be content to be our backup. We could do a lot worse, and a lot of teams do. (And he’s a lot better than Brad Johnson was.)

Meanwhile, this game did give reason to have confidence that our 3rd QB may really have something, and the coaches may have been right about him. This game showed that he’s at least developing on schedule, able to run the offense, manage the game clock in clutch situations, make a variety of throws accurately and finally opened up downfield including a beautiful deep bomb, hit a wide range of receivers (11), stay poised in the pocket, make smart decisions and didn’t turn the ball over but wasn’t afraid to throw it into tight spaces and make plays when he needed to. A very promising performance.

Being able to develop a quality QB that you draft is a big deal. So many are busts, even high round picks. But if you choose the right guy and give him the right coaching and the right situation and you get a little lucky, he can be a very valuable investment. He gives security that he can at least be the replacement for Kitna perhaps next year, and if he really develops well he can be traded for a nice draft pick. So it’s very good news, in this exhibition game, to see that our young QB does appear to have some serious upside!

by scottmaui on Sep 3, 2010 2:47 AM CDT up reply actions

Spot on

Tonights game basically saved McGee a roster spot and allows the organization to continue to hope he might be groomed to be Romo’s replacement. This game did not give us a new #2 QB.

I bet Wisenhunt (and a handful of other teams ie. StL, Pitt, Cle) would gladly take Kitna to compete for their starting QB position.

It's a tough call on Kitna.

Stephen McGee probably saved his career tonight. Not bad for a first real outing in a pro style offense. Manny, Holley, Ogletree, Hurd, they all looked good. Lee looked good. Butler was the man. McCray was abused all night long. Didn’t really see Jason Williams do anything, and he played the whole freakin’ game.

What’s funny is before the game how Babe, and Spags were talking about how the Cowboys already pretty much know who they’re going to keep, then all these players showed well. I really enjoyed the youthful energy out there tonight. It was a heck of a fun game to watch. After what McGee did all night, I had every confidence that he was going to drive it down the field for the win. Oh, and one more thing. Gronkowski has really grown on me. Cut Deion and keep Gronkowski.

Woh now

Let’s tap the breaks a little here.

Although Stephen McGee’s performance was very impressive, let’s remember this was a preseason game.

And let’s not forget the real games where Kitna has actually started for at least two NFL teams and been statistically productive.

But let’s also remember that Kitna is merely a veteran backup QB who I’d have more confidence in if God forbid Romo were to get injured and miss a game or two.

Reality is that Kitna has Real Game Experience and McGee simply has not — and I’m NOT a Kitna fan either.

But he simply gives us a better chance to win this season if Romo goes down for an extended period of time.

Oh and the Kitna to Brad Johnson comparisons are asinine. Kitna has a hell of an arm — although his decision-making isn’t the best as seen by his career interceptions over the years — and has actually won games for the teams he’s been on.

Johnson had a weak arm — and he didn’t lead Tampa Bay to their only Super Bowl. That Bucs Defense is responsible for their lone ring.

Comparing Kitna to Johnson is like comparing Keith Brooking to Zach Thomas.

Puh-leeze.

by scottmaui on Sep 3, 2010 12:08 AM CDT up reply actions

There's more to it, than just experience

With Kitna you have to alter the playbook quite a bit, because he can’t move and with an OLine that has some problems that’s a big NO-NO.

Meanwhile, McGee is quite capable of buying for himself more time.

I think that they will keep 3 QBs, but I can see the reasoning behind keeping 2.

I’m fine with keeping three but again I don’t see the soft spot on the schedule where Kitna, even if his arm isn’t shot to hell like Johnson’s was, could realistically be expected to lead the team to a 2-1 record unless the ‘Skins or Eagles end up sucking and the defense is pitching shutouts. Every other week it’s going to be the Texans, Colts, Packers or Vikings alternating with division foes. There are no daisies on the schedule; all rough patches. Even the Lions are sandwiched between the Giants and then the Colts and Saints.

Ogletree almost played himself off the roster. He made some critical mistakes. Instinctual mistakes that were a bit surprising. I would not be surprised if he gets cut.

The way our 1's have been playing I thought this game would get ugly...

but I was pleased with how all the young guys played. My thoughts:
*keep 6 recievers, unless a trade for a pick or interior lineman appears out of nowhere
*Gronko over Rucker
*Choice deserves more snaps at Barber’s expense.
*Changed my mind on McGee, lets keep him. He does need to get the ball out of the dirt which I saw him do several times.
*Butler should also get more playing time and keep Spencer fresh.
*Not sure about McCray. It’s either him or McCann, who gets bullied by tall recievers.
*No idea about the OL, i’d have to watch the replay and look closer but it is clearly the weak spot and Ciskowski better be looking at the waviers. But Brewster was weak, Holland had mental errors, and Barron didn’t inspire much. And McQuistan should have been cut this week.

McGee played very well compared to his previous performances

This game showed us a glimpse of why Dallas drafted him, and why they want to develop him. It was a great way to end the pre-season on a performance like that.

But there’s no chance Dallas would go with Romo and McGee as the 2 QB’s. Kitna is entrenched as the backup this season. McGee could have thrown for 400 yds and 5 TD’s, it wouldn’t change that. Next year he’ll compete to replace Kitna as the backup. But his game tonight should ease some fears that Dallas is wasting it’s time trying to develop him.

I’d give the game ball to McGee on offense, Butler on defense (he’s becoming a quality OLB, really a playmaker), and even though McB is in All Pro form already, Buehler gets the ST ball. He’s done everything asked of him and Dallas saves a spot on the roster because of his hard work. He impressed the heck out of me. He looks like he’ll manage the FG kicking just fine. Plus he still had 5 or 6 touchbacks.

Thank you #22, for everything you did for the Cowboys. There will never be another one like you.

Does anyone know

what the schedule is for the boys? Do they have the weekend off and start practice on monday?

Really?! Really?!

Buehler

. . . is very impressive, indeed. This roster spot is critical and his distance gives Dallas another dimension in close games. Plus, Buehler is a physical speciman . . . he is an athlete who is not likely to go through mental breakdowns like other kickers have done in the past.

McGee still in progress

McGee is a developmental prospect. No one was calling for Romo to take over #2 duty in his second year and the same should be said for McGee. On a team that has championship asperations, you must have a solid back-up. If Romo goes down for some of the season, we need a developed QB not a developing QB to step in and guide the team.

Good to see McGee perform well and I look forward to seeing that continue.

I swear our second team defenders could play just as well as a few 1st string Ds out there.

Butler is just relentless. He’s the #1 rotation guy, imo. Blasted some dude on special teams too.

co-sign

Butler is a Beast!

We’re blessed to have such talented depth at LB.

Props to our scouting department and front office personnel over the last several years…

Is playing smart too much to ask?

He must eat Wheaties or something.

How did the line look against Miami's first teamers?

My last memory of the Cowboys is still vs. the Texans. Is it ok to start feeling better about the team? lol

Is it NFL time yet?

AOA looked good.

Barron had problems and Holland took Flos place in false starts. What DBs will make it? McCray, McCann and Church all need to be on the 53 IMO. Looks like 3 NTs might hang on also. We’ll know by 5:00 PM Saturday

Lock n Load

I really want AOA to succeed and become a starter next year

Also, I like Gronkowski and I hope he sticks and becomes a starting fullback for us.

Me 2 on both counts.

I liked seein AOA start last night…a glimpse of the future?

Man did he take some ugly hits on returns

He didn’t put the ball on the ground though, and he got right back up. Tough kid.

Thank you #22, for everything you did for the Cowboys. There will never be another one like you.

McGee was impressive..Very nice to see

The o line looked ok but we will have more depth in the near future when hurd and crayton are traded…Philly picked up wells who is a ave guard, but when u have stacey andrews listed as ur starter any other large body looks good i guess..

Buehler looked really good as well last night that should shut up alot of those haters out there…
