You're not taking injuries into account man.

Agreed
All i gotta say is dropped pass in the playoff loss to the Giants.
He’s never done anything out of the ordinary (see Miles Austin last season) to be special. He had an opportunity to pass Roy on the chart, but HE DIDNT. As much as we hate Roy, Crayton isn’t as good as him or he’d be #2/3 on the chart, period.
He would be a whiney cancer crying the whole season for playing time, in a season we need unity bad if we want to take it all. I like it cuz I would rather see Ogletree in over Crayton anyday.
Last point (sorry so long): Roy goes against #1 and #2 corners. Crayton goes against the 3rds, safeties, and linebackers. Much easier to catch on a slow ass linebacker. SMART move to get something instead of cut him and let someone have him for free.
Same decision of fail O-Linemen. Send him back to the stinky tuna.

The fact that he didn't pass RW on the depth chart shouldn't be held against him
That depth chart at WR is no meritocracy, imo.

a starter?
you are living in the past my friend
by Pete Mccullagh on Sep 3, 2010 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions
He wasn't a starter last year.....
at best a 3rd receiver.
I’ve read with 40 catches it could be a 6th.
while I am glad they got something for him
the fact that RW has only played in 16 games once in his career. That Dez has never played a down of NFL ball and has not played football period in a year, and that Austin has only been a starter for 3/4 of the year is a bit concerning. This is something that could come back to bite the Cowboys in the butt.
It shows that the Cowboys are not concerned with keeping the top 53 players. Money has a bit something to do with it. In an uncapped season this does not make sense to me.
"Talent is God-given; be humble. Fame is man-given; be grateful. Conceit is self-given; be careful." John Wooden
I'm with you re. "the butt"
Crayton was probably among the top 30 players in the squad. That’s not something to give up for a 7th pick. This is just disappointing as all heck.
Jerry isn't keeping the best 53, that's for sure.
Hurd makes almost as much $ but Crayton is the better player.
And now, the report is that McQ was traded to Miami
For an “undisclosed” pick in 2011. Maybe it’s a first?!!
No big loss there, I think.
Needed to be more
Glad for Patrick – just not real happy about the value for the team.
Now does this mean Hurd sticks?

by FBH22 on Sep 3, 2010 7:23 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
The key is Special Teams
Crayton was a backup returner. Hurd is a special teams specialist.
Hurd has more value to keep as for his dual role with one of them being a value to EVERY game.
by DaStarShinesBright on Sep 4, 2010 1:59 AM CDT up reply actions
That's a Shame
Crayton is worth more to us than a 7th rounder.
The first time one of our receivers gets injured, we’re going to miss him.
which is exactly why so many are decrying this trade
we got back what we could, but it was less than he was worth /to us/. that’s a shame.
Agreed
THIS IS NOT MADDEN. Just because you value him a higher pick, doesn’t mean that the owner’s who have got to cut the checks make the value, and they know more about the way the system works, more about who values who, etc.

I’ve read it could be a 6th if he catches 40 passes.
It was the right move for many reasons. I hope JJ makes at least 4 more exports and two more imports for the oline which is the material issue on the team.
It isn’t that complicated Iron Fist. This team needs much more work then what the average fan is willing to accept. It would be scary if the management shared this naive point of view.
Crayton was a “give me the ball” whiner which isn’t anything that out of the ordinary. He dropped the pass of his career in the Giant game. He was a good player but good only goes so far if you are serious about winning the SB.

He wasn't the slighted underachiever?
I can understand his position, it wasn’t like he signed a mega rookie contract and was slated for X # of looks. Yes he whined and thought he was blocked from bigger things throughout his time. At some level that’s a good thing.
He asked to be trade when they drafted Dez. For what he was paid he could have just shut up and showed up to the OTAs. Once he didn’t his days were numbered out of principle. All their days are numbered in some way.
You wonder why the cowboys have so many player relics? Consider this board.

apparently not
Up until an hour ago, that argument could have been rationalized. Now that it’s a done deal, Crayton is worth exactly 1 very late 7th round pick.
by greatwhitenorth on Sep 3, 2010 3:10 PM CDT up reply actions
They were going to release him...
…which would have gotten us NOTHING. Instead, they traded him, from a position of weakness (since everyone seemed to know we were going to release him – just us fans didn’t want to believe it)….and got a 7th round pick. A 7th round pick is a lot better than NOTHING!
Of course, keeping him, in an uncapped year no less…would have been better than either option in my opinion.
Crayton May Be Worth More Than a 7
to Dallas but he is also taking up a valuable roster spot that will be better utilized on a longer term value to the team; plus, Crayton is just too damn slow in his old age
+1
Maybe he could be their slot guy? Hopefully this also means Vincent Jackson is on the move as well. Also need that fantasy football depth!
They still have Buster Davis though...

True, forgot about him. 4th WR behind a stud TE...
Sounds familiar, but from below sounds like PCray is happy at least.
Guess this just means Scandrick has to practice by himself and stay away from the WRs? lol
Good trade for him.
This may have been one of those instances where Jerry had a bit of loyalty left and traded him to where Patrick could make a difference and not to where he could have received more for him.
Good quaterback over there.

I’m not sure about the technicalities here, but a trade means Crayton keeps his $ 2 million contract. If they’d released him outright, Crayton would have had to renegotiate a contract as a free agent and would likely not have gotten as much.

You never get what you think you will in draft picks
I agree he was worth more than a 7th (and maybe the Cowboys will get a 6th if he can catch 40) but when you look around the league at players like Santonio Holmes going for a 5th, it’s probably the best deal Jerry could have gotten.
Probably didn’t help that PC and his agent were so public with their trade demands before camp.
Thank you #22, for everything you did for the Cowboys. There will never be another one like you.
Crayton was also
becoming a disgunteled player & although he wasn’t on TurdO’s level, he was on the same track. plus how does anyone really know what he looked like when the media wasn’t allowed to watch? he peaked in 2007 & i doubt he’s any better 3 years later. they have the personel to replace him & losing a 31 year old WR thats slow won’t stop this team from making a superbowl run. i’m sure it was more then money & a lot to do w/ some younger players that had to much potential to just let get claimed off waivers. also theirs been a lot of talk about J.Holley making huge strides since last year & we won;t see the whole picture until the season is on the way. how many passes do you want Crayton taking from Dez, Austin, Witten & even Bennett if he’s on the verge of a break out year. also Roy is the #2 WR now & his #s are decent for that role & could increase w/ teams having to cover Austin, Dez, Witten & Felix at RB. don;t forget Choice either. theirs just to many weapons on this offense & its time for RoMo to take the next step, if the OL can protect him.
Jerry put Crayton on a decent team & it should allow some of the younger players a chance to make some plays.

I think the deciding factors were attitude and age
After the TO saga, I think this became a case of giving Crayton what he was asking for. He may be lucky to not have been cut and then have to negotiate a new deal (if I understand correctly how that works). And the team has an obvious preference for new/younger players at the skill positions. Hope that takes hold for the O line next year!
I still think the team might have been better off this year with PC, but the decision seems to be more forward looking. And his value was really as a fallback if something happens to Austin, Williams or Bryant. Hopefully, we won’t need the fallback.
If at first you don't succeed - blame someone else.
Someone explain to me...
again why this (uncapped year) isn’t a perfect opportunity to jettison a HUGE mistake named Williams. If 2 million is too much to pat PC, how can JJ justify paying 9 mill to a lesser receiver?

Somewhere in the 15th round according to this 1965 draft trade value chart
Thank you #22, for everything you did for the Cowboys. There will never be another one like you.
hows Roys numbers as a #2 WR?
he had around 800 yards & 8 Tds? his production could rise with the addition of Dez & the breakout year from Austin. also Wittens only getting better & some think (cross ya fingers) that Bennett could have a break out season also so theirs only so many balls to go around.
i think we all have accepted Rpy won;t live up to the #1 Wr contract he signed but he could become a good #2 that has his best year bc of all the other options we have for defenses to cover. if guys like Felix & Bennett have a huge season then it will make a lot more sense why Crayton wasn’t needed. what if Hurd is poised to have a huge year or even ogletree? theirs a reason more then the 2 mil they owed to trade Crayton but no one will know until the seasons under way.

Jerry already paid him a lot for THIS year, and most of his contract is Guaranteed for THIS Year. If he waits a year it will drop significantly the actual money Jerruh will have to pay him. I think Jerry would’ve had to pay him 7 Million even if he cut him, and when Roy has the potential, not in our system with Dez and Miles and Witten in front of him, to get over 1000 yards why not keep him if you have to pay him and he isn’t completely ruining the team

Maybe San Diego didn't want the hassel
of contending with any other team that might be interested (Rams) in a free agent bidding war. So they just got the sure trade.

could Hurd be the next to go or do they keep 6 Wrs bc it seemed like a lot of talk about Holley’s potential at Wr & ability to play STs. i read theirs more deals/cuts to come so who knows whats in the mix but i’m sure Joe D wants to keep atleast 1 of his aces on STs but then again McCray has been doing great as a gunner,
i like Hurd & we don’t know his full potential as a QR but i know the guy works harder then most the Wrs on the roster.

Holley has got to be the most over-hyped player I've ever seen
Why he’s even mentioned as a candidate to make this team is a complete mystery. They guy has done zip. He’s a totally replaceable ST player, and less than that as a WR. He should thank a higher power if he makes the PS again. JMO
Hurd >>>>>>>>>>>>>>Holley
Thank you #22, for everything you did for the Cowboys. There will never be another one like you.
IMO, it's the exact opposite (Holley is GOOD)
I don’t believe he’s been given the opportunities as Hurd and Ogletree so we haven’t been able to see his full potential. From what we did see in that last preaseason game I can say that he is QR potential. He’s been proving his abilities on ST already so he deserves a spot on the team now that we’ve made some space! Hurd might be leaving anyway with his price-tag. So that’ll be even more of a reason to sign Holley to the 53. Coaches have obviously been impressed with him so we’ll see what happens!

Thank you #22, for everything you did for the Cowboys. There will never be another one like you.
Doubt it.
I would bet Jerry consults the coaches way more than you think. Hell, on Hard Knocks, he was in the freaking coaches meeting talking about roster moves. If JG thought Crayton was really necessary to the offense’s success he would still be here in my opinion.
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.
How do you know what I think?
I’m as tuned into the Cowboys as you my friend, I think I know Jerry is the ultimate micro manager.
All I said was they’d miss PC, not that Garrett thought he was critical to the success of the offense. A bit of a difference in those two statements.
Thank you #22, for everything you did for the Cowboys. There will never be another one like you.
Oh my bad.
I thought you were implying that Garrett and Romo weren’t on board with the move. And my point was simply that I am sure Jerry checked with them beforehand (or at least with JG).

just so you know
1/2 of crayton’s memorable plays of last season came against Philly.
He was a good red zone threat, he had a big play against the Bucs, and other than that, the only damage he did was against you….
I’m a crayton fan because hes a reliable player on an offense full of unreliable ones, but he didn’t exactly light it up – you could even argue that we should expect significantly more from a 3rd wr than what he gave us.
I'm right there with you.
I like him alot, but this is a huge overreaction to a mediocre player.

About the time I think Jerry is catching on to being a GM,
he pulls a bonehead move like this.
Lock n Load
Its not that bad of a move
If Crayton stayed on the Cowboys he would be inactive nearly every game, only 4 receivers go to the game and it would be Miles, Dez, Roy, KO or Hurd. So he wouldn’t have even been out there to make a play, and I don’t think Hurd is much of a drop-off as a receiver, he still has some upside, and is a better special teams player and it also opens up so that we can keep either 6 safeties or 3 NTs

Gates and Floyd will just see more come their way until (if) V. Jax returns. Crayton will see a couple here and there, but I doubt he averages the 2.5/game needed to reach the 40 mark. They’re pretty high on Nanee’s potential out there.

Yeah it’s “only” a 7th, but it very easily could have been for nothing at all.

Since the Cowboys invested a 7th rounder in him in 2004, his stats are…

Mixed feelings about this.
Crayton had the potential to be a distraction as the season went on and he lost snaps and catches to Dez, and there’s no sense is keeping Dez on the bench (if he’s healthy) just to placate Crayton. The Dez Era needs to start sooner rather than later.
On the other hand, Crayton was a reliable safety valve for Romo, and always seemed to find the open spots underneath.
I think I’d feel happier if we had received a warm body on the O-line in return, but I suspect this is a situation where Crayton was more valuable to us than he was to anyone else.
See, that's the thing.
Crayton wasn’t going to gradually lose snaps to Dez. Those were going to be Dez’s snaps period.
Crayton is 31
I’ve said this many times: it is better to get rid of a player a year too soon than a year too late.

As bad as the things Irvin did off the field were, his passion on the field was never questioned. I’m not comparing Crayton to Irvin. I’m saying it’s easier to pull for a guy that plays with some fire like Crayton than it is for someone that plays with virtually no fire like Williams.

Ogletree has been here for a shorter amount of time and they bumped him ahead of Hurd. Hurd has to really fight for it if he wants it to happen.
I hope not
Hurd is a special teamer. That’s all, and that’s another reason this was a dumb move.
He's an expensive special teamer
If that’s the case. Holley would cost so much less… If Ogletree is truly 4th in the lineup then I see Hurd being cut or traded as well. It’d only make sense financially.
God 1st, Family Always & Dallas Cowboys 4 Life!!!!!
I think he will be
Ogletree doesn’t do enough STs to be on the active roster, Dez will be PR, AoA probably will be the KR, KO doesn’t have a real spot unless Roy gets injured……

Right now, yes
Ogletree needs to step his game up. He hasn’t looked like he did last season. But eventually, I see Austin, Dez and Ogletree as the future top 3 guys.

I haven't followed the Chargers; they have all those giant
receivers, or they did. Why would he think he’ll be #2?
It means they really like Dez, Hurd and Ogletree
And, thought that Crayton was overpaid, in the way, and potentially going to pout and whine if he was buried on the depth chart. I’m not understanding the groundswell of anger about this move. Crayton was just a guy, and his time in Dallas had run its course.
The problem is, what if one of the top guys goes down?
Then what?
"The Angels are like the villain in the movie that isn't dead until he's been stabbed 150 times in the bath tub, yet he still might come back up one more time." - Eric Nadel
Then Hurd or Ogletree step in
Are they capable? I don’t know, but it’s Jerry and Wade’s job to know. We’ll find out!
That's what worries me.
Crayton was proven. I think those guys are probably capable, but I’d feel a lot better with Craton in there.

Crayton had Romo's trust and could be counted on to make most of the catches that came his way.
That can’t be underestimated.

I hate to dwell on this but
Crayton had Romo’s trust and could be counted on to make most of the catches that came his way.
Except for that critical play in the Giants playoff game.
I knew somebody would bring that up.
Outside of that and a couple of other critical drops he’s been generally pretty reliable.

he wasn't worth it to keep the 1 or 2 reliable catches he would make every 2 or 3 games
and still have to keep up with his mouth, he was the last piece of the attitude changing house clearing.. i back this move up 100%

Yeah, but that one was just so awful
I will go to my grave seeing that as the single most pivotal moment in that game.
The third down drop earlier in the second half on the shallow crossing pattern
when it looked like he could’ve run for 30 yards after the catch was pretty big , too.
Yeah, he just needs his chance.

Ok, I had to do it. The Voices forced me to look up some stats
Last year, the Cowboys had more 7th rounders (seven players) on their roster and playing at least one game in the league than any other draft round except for the first round.
In 2010, even without Crayton, we’ll still have seven 7th rounders, again more than any other draft round except first rounders.
The 7th rounder is the cornerstone of the Cowboys resurgence of the last few years! Jerry did well in refusing San Diego’s offer of a 5th or 6th rounder. His insistence on a 7th round compensation shows remarkable foresight.

2005 NFL draft
and one hell of a good draft pick.
But in the last 5 years, they’re only 1-for-7 on 7th round draft picks. And that one might really be no better than a backup, my opinion is that Ball doesn’t keep his starting job next year, but that’s just speculation.
We got a few good 7th rounders, and those are always great surprises. But let’s not go overboard in thinking a 7th rounder is something to get excited about.

Crayton
I was sad at first, but if its what he wants then good for him. They got back what they originally paid and a pick, which is more than I expected – I honestly thought it was gonna be a player trade.
Good:
Happy Crayton aka no locker room drama over unhappy players
Crayton gets out before he becomes over-the-hill on us for what he cost
Youth Movement – opportunity for Hurd / KO
$2M free’d up as well as the ROSTER spot, which we are really needing (OL, secondary)

What does this mean? I'm confused. Are they just swapping 6ths?
For McQuistan – They will receive Miami’s sixth round pick only if the Dolphins have a worse record in 2010 and therefore a higher pick in the round.

Ever since that 3rd down drop against the Giants back in '07.....
Crayton was not and is not a big game receiver. Yeah he made plays here and there but he could not be counted on in the clutch. Crayton also had a mouth on him that gave the opposing team too much incentive. Check the 2007 Giants for that.
Sure, he ran back a few punts but in the end, it’s what you do at your position consistently that counts and he wasn’t consistent enough to make the Cowboys think twice about his trade value. The draft picks will do us better in the long run that an inconsistent WR . We already have one in RW.

Fine w Crayton trade
It’s called something for nothing, he would have been gone in 24 hours. Good result for PC as well – keeps his contract, plays on a legit SB contender. Ironic if he gets to play in the SB in DA – as a Bolt. Thanks PC – you were a player who contributed and a multi-tasker. I forgave you for the NYG drop a long time ago. Your body of work as a DC completely outweighs the negatives.
For our roster – keeps Hurd in the fold, solidifies Tree’s position. And in effect, we got J Brent for free. ST unit stays stable. These are all good things, people

Does that mean my pet cat McCann...
… has a better chance of making the team as a return guy?
: )
Is playing smart too much to ask?
I cannot believe no one's mentioned Punt Returner
I don’t care about Crayton as a WR, but he was a solid, dependable PR.
Now we have….?
Dez Bryant? Untested, hasn’t even played football in a year.
Newman? Too risky at his age now.
Some rookie?
I’m a lot more worried about a couple of fumbled punts than Crayton’s receiving.
Pessimists say the cup is half-empty, while optimists say it's half-full. Well, isn't it both? Realist Larry, 2009
Dez will do fine.
Besides when’s the last time a muffed punt lost the game? Well that flukey thing in Pittsburgh sucked but that was just a funny bounce that hit one of the guys downfield in the backside and not an actual muffed punt.
He'll do fine?
Maybe. Maybe not.
He hasn’t even played in preseason!

I'm always amazed at blind optimism.
But I didn’t say he’d be bad, just that we don’t know. WhenI see one, and consistent work for weeks, I’ll know it’ll be OK.
I’ve heard for years of these guys who were ‘great returners’ in college, but it doesn’t always transfer to the NFL.
There’s nothing proven at PR except Newman.
Also, if Bryant is so talented, do you want him returning kicks?

I hardly ever reply to your post but I'm about a case of beer down and just find it necessary.
You aren’t realistic by nature, you are pessimistic.
Your tag is a quote… that notes that you are quoting yourself. Which is another thing that is totally unnecessary, that isn’t such a good line that you have to let people know that you wrote it.
I’m a Pat liker, so I can say this easily… his value is being overstated in the PR game. For the punt retrurns he had this year he also has muffed them before. He’s a mediocre WR who works his ass off and I respect that, but that is what he is. He wasn’t a great returner, he wasn’t even a good returner, he was just a reliable returner.

Yes, to the kick question, too much talent not to use
It’s not blind optimism when its based on watching him at OSU and seeing with my own eyes the talent he’s got for finding a way to the end zone. Vison, football speed, a feel, whatever it is, he has it.
Not saying he won’t ever fumble or have less than average returns, but I would be shocked, SHOCKED, if he doesn’t become a threat that teams will need to adjust for during his rookie season.
Just saying, don’t worry.
Thank you #22, for everything you did for the Cowboys. There will never be another one like you.
Played Mafia 2 for a couple of hours
and I get online to see the Cowboys traded Crayton and McQuistan. At least we’ll still have Sam Hurd and Kevin O for depth at WR.
Greg Ellisitis
This is my first post ever so be easy on me. But is seems like Crayton had the whole Greg Ellis syndrome with a younger guy going after his position (Anthony Spencer). Now it took Spencer a little while to come around but look at him now. I think if we just take what Dez has to offer and not expect some monster season we will be just fine.
I'd agree with that

If the premise is, “we were going to cut him anyway”, then, sure, a 7th rounder is better than a poke in the eye. But, that is question-begging.
The real question is, “why are we going to cut a productive player”? The answer is, of course, because he is paid too much. BUT, RW makes more! Could we not trade him? Maybe even for a 3rd or 4th? Answer: No, because he makes even more, and is less productive than PC. No one would give you a paper clip for RW, because they would have to assume his ridiculous contract.
So, we elect to keep the higher priced, less productive player because WE CAN’T TRADE HIM? What sense does that make? We have a player that we can move because his contract is somewhat in line with his production- let’s get rid of him. That player that no team would ever take at the price we are paying? KEEP HIM.
stoopid
Jerry ain't cutting bait on his little Roy gamble after only a season and a half.
He still got screwed in the deal and Roy will never live up to it but Jerry isn’t giving up on it just yet.

Trade RW and $5m
That way he only costs his new team $2m this year. That would have been ok with me. Of course that new team would be stuck with his contract in the future… but that’s another story.
The real question is, "why are we going to cut a productive player"?
Difference is Crayton has requested a trade twice this year …. Roy hasn’t. Crayon didn’t wanna be here because of Dez, Roy does.
So, we elect to keep the higher priced, less productive player because WE CAN’T TRADE HIM? What sense does that make?
what would you feel better about? Them trading Crayton for a 7th, or releasing RW and eating the $11 million? I’d much rather have Roy and his 7 touchdowns.
Sure,
cut scrappy overachievers who give their all. Keep the underachievers because JJ thought it was a good idea to give them big contract. Sends the right message to the team.
cut scrappy overachievers who give their all
and don’t wanna be here. He sure gave it his all complaining about his role, didn’t he? Hate Roy and his trade/contract all you want … I’d much rather have the guy who WANTS TO BE HERE.
Who wouldn't
want to be somewhere where they are outrageously overpaid? “Don’t cut me, Mr. Jerry!” I’ll do anything you say!"
I could care less why they wanna be here, as long as they wanna be a Cowboy.
as long as they’re not complaining about being here and wants to be traded, just because they drafted a younger, bigger, and faster WR.
At the end of the day potential is worth more than a label of underachiever/overachiever.
Plus the fact that one is called an underachiever and one is called an overachiever despite the fact they produced comparably just goes to show that Roy’s talent is definitely valued higher than Crayton’s (and rightly so in my opinion).
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

I think RW can definitely be a productive WR for us. He showed flashes of getting on the same page with Romo in the preseason and I think he could be a very effective #2/#3 depending on what Dez does.

Interesting answer from some of the faithful...
What’s the value of a receiver like Crayton? What was his position with the team?
Answer? Top 2 passing targets: Austin and Witten. Next 2: Williams and Bryant. Crayton was in a battle for balls with the likes of: Bennett, Barber, Ogletree and Hurd.
The only special team unit in which he could play was Punt returns…
And he’s already 31 years old.
His value is basement low. The Cowboys were lucky to land a conditional 6th or 7th.
Arnold, almost 5 years of good memories, you'll be missed.

Look at it this way guys
We used our 2011 7th to get Brent and just got it back for Crayton(maybe a 6th). To me this trade was like getting Brent for Crayton. I would make that trade in heart beat.
I would have preferred an OL, but a good DL prospect this year when we stand to loose so many DL after this year is a big win in my book.

I guess we’ll see tomorrow. But I wouldn’t get your hopes up.

I really thought this was a possibility after this preseason
I just have not seen anything from Barber in almost a year.
Read the comments posted over at ESPN from Stephen Jones said
"It’s not strictly the money it’s, how do you want your team to progress? If you’re always keeping the veteran guys over the young guys, then you ultimately become and old team, and that bites you at some point."
If this trade happens you know it was Stephen’s doing not J3. He gets to attached to players and only makes a move when he’s pushed enough by Stephen.
Woodson is a Hall of Famer!!!
and only makes a move when he’s pushed enough by Stephen.
And it’s usually the right move. I think Dallas is in good hands for a long time, even after Jerry retires.
Agree
In the long term, that’s the best thing you can say for the Cowboys future, Stephen Jones is next in line.
Thank you #22, for everything you did for the Cowboys. There will never be another one like you.

that comment
makes me happy. Sounds like someone has learned from this teams mistakes.
If by mistakes you mean only listening to that little voice in his head then I agree.
Woodson is a Hall of Famer!!!
Stephen says a lot of good things
You can put whatever stock you want to in what guys like Stephen say to the media. But he does say all the things you want to hear out of a GM.
Jerry has a tendency to really fall in love with guys and either
A) Keep them around too long (see Dallas Cowboys from 1997-2000)
or
B) Give them huge contracts for past performance when it’s highly uncertain they can produce in the future (Ken Hamlin, Marion Barber)
or
C) Impulsively give up the farm to get them (Joey Galloway, Quincy Carter, Roy Williams)

Crayton for Brent
I like that line of thinking!! By the way, I missed the game and wanted to watch how Brent did. Did he make a positive impression?
Also, I don’t see Rafael Vela’s name as a writer or editor. Did I miss an announcement?
"He has a peculiar felicity of expression." John Adams
Yes. Go back some posts.
Arnold, almost 5 years of good memories, you'll be missed.
Viva México! Go Cowboys!
He's running his own show here:
yep...he left us
it is nice to see a site with 5 raf posts a day though.

The forums need a ton of work…SB nation is clearly better.
One question, are the Cowboys a better team without Crayton?
I think not.

Crayton can be a better player without the Cowboys.
He didn’t want to be All-State anymore.

I would rather they have traded Roy Williams.
Patrick Crayton is almost always very reliable.
Is it NFL time yet?
Nobody wants RW.
If RW’s contract was the same as Crayton, I doubt Jerry could get a 7th for his boy.

A running theme perhaps....
Moving a player a year earlier then most would expect…. Crayton wouldn’t have been here after next year and who here thinks that Barber will still be here after this season? You really think that they will hold Choice down another year? I don’t. He’s cheaper and is a better overall back. JJ and SJ are realizing that we can be a contender and be in a transitional phase at the same time.

This is how Philly and NE stayed ahead of the crowd for years.
And I like it. Painful in the short run, but you find out who the real players are, and develop more in the long run.
Barber???
Wouldn’t miss him at all. I’ve been saying all offseason he’d be sitting behind Felix this year. And Choice is just as good. RB reads and blitz pickup is not rocket science, 2nd year is good enough.
I’d love it if they could get a 3rd or better for MB. He’s just an expensive insurance policy at this point.

I think a 3rd for Barber would be a great deal
Looks like Miller could come in as the 3rd RB and serve adequately.
Lord, I am looking forward to seeing the final 53. Maybe the countdown clock should be to that.
If at first you don't succeed - blame someone else.
Hell ya.
Please reset the time on the countdown clock to the 53man roster cutoff.

Some Perspective is in order
I recall the Patriots cutting Free Safety Lawyer Milloy/Malloy before the 2003 opener. He was a key contributor on their defense that won the 2001 Super Bowl against the Rams. Well, as it turned out in 2003, even though the players and fans hated the move, the Patriots ultimately won their 1st of back to back Super Bowls. Meanwhile Lawyer had an ok season for Buffalo but didn’t do much after that. Id rather get rid of someone like Patrick Crayton a year before they have NO trade value than to hold on to him and watch him bitch and moan and being a cancer in the locker room because a Rookie and two guys below him on the depth chart are getting more playing time. To sum this up, I like the fact we got a 7th Rounder for Patrick Crayton, there’s no way you’ll get higher than 6th for him to begin with, especially since SANTIONIO HOLMES WAS TRADED FOR A 5h ROUNDER!
It's only a dream till you write it down, and then it becomes a goal.

Remember TO?
Weren’t some of us just a year ago arguing that kicking TO to the curb would be a good idea? And TO had been a legitimately great player for us. Letting Crayton go is nothing. We didn’t miss TO; we certainly won’t miss Crayton.
For what it's worth, Josh Ellis said this on twitter
DCStarJEllis: On the Barber stuff, I’m hearing there’s no validity to it. That contract is close to impossible to move and they don’t have an extra RB.
I don't like the trade
Crayton is worth more than a 7th rounder. He is probably the 3rd or 4th best WR on the team. Why ditch him? S.T.U.P.I.D.
Here's why we moved Patrick Crayton
It makes sound business sense to ditch someone a year too soon than a year too late. Also, we only spent a 7th RD draft pick on Patrick Crayton, so after 6 years and declining speed, and exhausting all we can out of him, we got back our initial investment. That my friend is good value for someone who was going to be cut if he wasn’t traded. Also, the trade prevented him from going to Philly, Washington, or Minnesota.
It's only a dream till you write it down, and then it becomes a goal.

My take...
Crayton’s declining speed isn’t an issue; he knows how to find the open spot in the defense, plus he had some amazing punt returns last year which show some elusiveness is still there.
I don’t think that he had to be cut anyway if he wasn’t traded. I’d rather cut Ogletree or Hurd; neither of which are as good as Crayton.
Keeping him on the Cowboys roster would have easily keep him from going to PHI, WAS, or MIN.
Hurd is making almost as much money as Crayton; so it wasn’t a financial decision.
I can see no GOOD reason for releasing Crayton. The team is worse without him. He had the best chemistry with Romo of all the WRs on the roster.
Against a very good defensive unit, when Romo is running for his life under pressure, I’m sure he is gonna wish Crayton was still in the slot position. Romo trusts Crayton. Ogletree and Hurd still need time, but Dallas is pushing for a Super Bowl this year, which means we should have kept Crayton all the more.
He wanted out.
AFB Condensed- New name, same flavor.
Quoting yourself doesn't require your own name attached to it. I'm going to assume if there isn't anyone else's name attached it's yours.
If Santonio Holmes can only field a 5th Rd Pick after the Steelers used a 1st RD pick on him
What would you have liked to see the Cowboys get for Patrick Crayton, a 31 year old wide receiver, who was drafted in the 7th RD?
It's only a dream till you write it down, and then it becomes a goal.
-Emmitt Smith
In my opinion,
the round Crayton was drafted in has NOTHING to do with his trade value. Whether he was a 1st round selection or a free agent, so what? His value should be based on his playing ability. And he is worth more to the Cowboys because of his mojo with Romo.
I wonder if Tony had any input on this
It would really be interesting to know if he was asked, and what he said. Maybe Crayton’s constant complaining was interfering with the mojo?
Just speculation, but it does make me wonder.
If at first you don't succeed - blame someone else.
Silly
If Jerry asked Tony for his complete, honest, candid assessment of the receivers… do you think he would tell Jerry to keep making him throw OVER AND OVER again to Roy Williams and cut that pathetic Patrick Crayton?
by Blue Eyed Devil on Sep 4, 2010 2:17 AM CDT up reply actions
We didn't get Squat for TO.
And he was and still is better than PC. You didn’t see teams stumbling to grab him. He went to the land of broken down, bad attitude ex-Cowboys: The Bungles (TO, Roy Williams, and Adam Jones). That still puts a smiles on my face.

Declining players.....
there are always so many but many fans never seem to adjust. He wanted to leave and I’m glad as the spot has been upgraded in potential.
He is a solid but limited player. So some unknown results in the area are expected. That’s how you make progress.
Consider this:
665 often passionate comments prior to this one about a player projected by most to be the NUMBER FOUR wide receiver.
God, I love the BTB commuity.
If at first you don't succeed - blame someone else.
Oh, and one more so there are now 667.
Don’t really go for that stuff, but it would be creepy.
If at first you don't succeed - blame someone else.
