If they cut

Hurd, then i guess we’ll be going with the Ogletree and Holley or just one of the two?

by textaz03 on Sep 4, 2010 2:06 PM CDT reply actions

I can't imagine going with fewer than 5

But Jerry Jones was talking about the possibility of keeping 4 yesterday morning on a radio talk show.

by Blue Eyed Devil on Sep 4, 2010 2:09 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd hate to

loose both Crayton and Hurd. Not much game NFL experience behind Austin and Roy if we do. That would be a total of what 10 games max between Bryant, Ogletree, Holley?

or sign

TJ Housh for the minimum!

I’m joking, of course.

I liked TJ on the bunguls

but not exactly sure what role he would help us fill here.

by fuji1232 on Sep 4, 2010 2:20 PM CDT up reply actions

I think he'd wanna be a Cowboy

but I don’t know if he’d wanna be the 3rd or 4th WR when he can go to Minny or the Rams and be the #1 or #2.

by Dub_TC on Sep 4, 2010 2:20 PM CDT up reply actions

he gets 7 mil no matter what

but whatever he signs for, the Hawks have to pay the rest to make it 7 mil.

For instance, if the Vikes sign him to a $1 million dollar contact, the Hawks have to pay him 6 million. So no matter what, he’s getting 7 mil.

by Dub_TC on Sep 4, 2010 2:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep too.

Heard it from Gil Brant on Sirius. That’s a pretty damn good source. Take it to the bank. TJ gets $7m this year. New team can pay vet min and Seattle would still pay the remainder of the $7m.

by Eagles suck on Sep 4, 2010 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions

That's not what I heard.

If Seattle cuts him they owe him 7M.

dont be greedy Hurd

its not really going to help you at this time. take lesson of whats happened recently when it comes to those that are in it for themselves and more importantly take this as an opportunity.

by fuji1232 on Sep 4, 2010 2:16 PM CDT reply actions

He’s not being greedy he’s not a super star… its not like he’s holding out asking for millions he’s just saying my worth on this team is more then a pay cut… Would you take a pay cut at your job if you know another company is willing to pay you the same if not more?

Whether you think you can or you think you can't either way your right

by UnNessecsary Roughness on Sep 4, 2010 2:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Don't know for sure if he can get that with another team

But yeah, I can see why he might not want to take a pay cut.

Gee, I wonder what could have been done differently in the past to free up some money (cough) Roy Williams’ contract (cough).

Sorry. Just had to take my baseball bat to that equine carcass.

by Tom Ryle on Sep 4, 2010 3:21 PM CDT up reply actions

i actually have thx

i stayed with a company for 2 years longer than i really wanted to because i was loyal. i watched dozens of people leave for better money and i stuck around to show my loyalty. i left in feb and landed a job making twice that. so i actually have been there and no what its like to be basically crapped-on for doing the “noble” thing.

“hes not being greedy, hes not a superstar”. EXACTLY … hes not star so he needs to watch what he does, cuz that could get him cut. thats what I am saying.

my tone is more of a word of advice (as if he could hear me). when it happened to me, i made sure i made it was clear … that it was to be apart of something and not the money. unfortunately for me it didnt work out … but i would still follow the same advice.

I don't blame Hurd

Jerry’s paying RW umpteen million dollars and wants to lowball Hurd? to agree to a pay cut?

Hurd is right in assuming he can catch on with another team, be a badass on STs, and be further up the depth chart. Why should he take a paycut to “guarantee” his spot on the roster?

I believe he’s currently making $1.75 million. Who knows how much is being offered by the Cowboys, I doubt it’s less than $1 million. You think somebody else is going to pay him that much? Maybe, I’m not sure. I doubt it’s a sure thing.

Only thing I blame Hurd for

is coming out and saying he would do whatever it takes to remain a Cowboy. Don’t say that if you really don’t mean it. I wouldn’t take a paycut either

by danielcp0303 on Sep 4, 2010 2:29 PM CDT reply actions

exactly...

within reason.. play on all special teams… learn to play Safety, learn to kick to be a holder… whatever… but don’t mess with a mans money…

Guys making Max contracts can afford a cut but the guys on the low end of the roster its more significant to take such a cut.

Miami wouldn’t let the ink dry on the release paper work before signing Hurd if he hit the wire trust me on that.

Whether you think you can or you think you can't either way your right

by UnNessecsary Roughness on Sep 4, 2010 2:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I think there'd be a few teams right there with 'em.

"We'll see." --Bill Parcells

by Uncle Angus on Sep 4, 2010 2:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Not So Sure

The might all wait to see if he clears wavers, or talk pay cut with his agent before they claim him. I would think other teams would want to renegotiate his contract amount in order to sign him. It is a lot of $$$ for a 5th receiver. Lots of guys hitting the wire today at league minimum. Just business

THey are probably looking to the game day roster makeup

McCray would never be active unless there are injuries, which is kinda the point I guess. But, with 2 S’s who cna play CB I guess it’s a calculated risk. He wasn’t a high draft pick so maybe he makes it through waivers.

by John Boy on Sep 4, 2010 2:45 PM CDT up reply actions

The one thing you can say, is that McCann is the least likely to get picked up by another team

McCray’s special teams play is known
Gordon has been featured as a CB this pre-season and has had multiple stints in the NFL, he’s very well known
And there’s absolutely no doubt that every scouting department in the NFL has tape of the UDFA Church doing a great job of covering Antonio Gates – one of the hardest assignments for an SS.

McCray, Gordon, and Church will absolutely not clear waivers. So I guess McCann would be the best shot to sneak to the P-Squad

i read it on the DMN blog...

by thejanusman on Sep 4, 2010 2:54 PM CDT up reply actions

we can't afford Revis

and we don’t need him. the basics don’t add up

by speedmetal on Sep 4, 2010 2:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Revis is 100000000 times better than Newman....and younger.

This defense could be 10 times more aggresive going after the QB with Revis and jenkins in the corners.

by ManTab on Sep 4, 2010 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions

and

we’d have to pay him 140 million. No thanks.

by Dub_TC on Sep 4, 2010 2:57 PM CDT up reply actions

you're paying newman about 8.5 per year.

he signed a 50.2 million 6 year extension about 2 – 3 years ago. He’ll cot you more as time goes by and he’s been hurt. It makes all the sense in the wor to pay average of 10 million per year to a guy like Revis who’s 10 times better. Revis could cover the entire side of the field like Deon used to do. You would constantly have 8 in the box and better your blitzes and run deffense.

by ManTab on Sep 4, 2010 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions

a good organization is always working the cap situation to make room for talent, either internal or free agents. We’ve got Austin, Free, and others we may need to pay soon. (has Ratliff gotten his due yet?)

by speedmetal on Sep 4, 2010 3:08 PM CDT up reply actions

again....you're paying newman an AVERAGE of 8.5...

I have not seen the details but I have a feeling his contract is back loaded as they all are. So newman will start costing probably about 10 to12 million per year soon….if you can get revis for about 10 million or 12 million, you’re getting a better and younger player……not exactly for much more money.

by ManTab on Sep 4, 2010 3:20 PM CDT up reply actions

okay, I see your point

but if the numbers do work out like that, we’d have to give up too much in terms of draft picks to make it worth it to the Jets

Regarding the tender for Hurd

it works both ways, if they tender low the player might sign somewhere else and clearly they wanted him in camp. Now he’s overvalued but the team ends up with nothing on the cut.

Hurd has every right not to take the cut. The cowboys can’t trade at this payroll level.

This is small stuff, I’d rather see new WR’s anyway. Hurd has done very little in games that have mattered. It does highlight other excesses like Williams and much more than that but this happens everywhere in the league. Hurd’s tender was an excess as well, I doubt he will get this comp somewhere else. Then again I don’t think that was the most important thing to him,he wants to be in the rotation. I wish him well.

Rotoworld’s take:
It’s fair to say the Cowboys got the better end of the trade that sent T Alex Barron to Dallas for Carpenter. The Ohio State product surprisingly lost out to Larry Grant for the starting weak-side linebacker gig by showing inferior physicality.

That's a very nice way to put it

I would call it “purposefully moving out of the way of Brandon Jacobs multiple times last year”

by Blue Eyed Devil on Sep 4, 2010 5:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Someone needs to put together a highlight reel

of all the times Barbie would throw himself on his belly as Jacobs comes running his way, then gets up and “tags” him down after Newman or Jenkins have to come up for the tackle.

by Nickthegrip on Sep 4, 2010 5:17 PM CDT up reply actions

I wonder if it's too long.....

on the PS for some of these guys. It’s bad enough to be inactive on a squad I feel bad for Holly, Dixon and Bright if they go through it all again. Third time for Dixon essentially.

A change of scene and players might be a way to go for all parties. Could you imagine cutting Dixon again for example?

by Cwon1 on Sep 4, 2010 5:17 PM CDT reply actions

I'm not sure if they'll put Dixon on the PS

With other guys they tell them they want to do that, and with him they apparently didn’t this time. So he may be history.

for Holley, another year on the PS could be good for him. And who knows maybe into the season once they feel more comfortable with Dez taking a full role, and maybe after Hurd has gotten some time to show some stuff, they’ll trade Hurd and move Holley up to the 53, since he can play that STs role, and Hurd is needed as an insurance WR more right now to start the season since Dez missed much of camp and all of preseason.

They must figure him to backup either guard or tackle, because on game day who are you carrying besides the starting 5?

Of that group, assuming Kosier is your starter, I’d say you leave Young and Brewster off and take Barron, Holland, and Costa as your backups.

like that’s never happened before, then you’re moving Scandrick outside and Akwazi into the slot or keeping Scandrick in the slot and moving Ball to Newman’s side? Then Hamlin into Ball’s slot?

by nicholas.rodriguez on Sep 4, 2010 6:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Plus McGee

With Hodge on the PUP list and Phillips on the IR.

The only ones who aren’t still around are DeAngelo Smith, Mike Mickens and Manny Johnson.

by kindablue on Sep 4, 2010 6:13 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah how can we forget about McGee

that draft class is actually yielding some good players a year out.

McGee showing real promise as a developmental QB, backup of the future material at the very least.

Butler has separated himself from the pack of 09 LBs as a strong pass rusher and complete LB ready to play now, plus a quality STer.

Buehler looks to be real gem, a rare weapon that really tilts the FP battle in Cowboys’ favor.

Hamlin still a big unknown but showing some promise. Brewster and both Williams still projects but showing enough promise to continue.

Phillips should be back next year as a reliable, versatile player.

Hodge is still complete unknown.

Even Manny Johnson has been useful on the PS and could be there again. That’s not a hit but it’s not a total miss either, for the our second choice in the seventh round (229th overall) at least he’s still around.

So at this point I would say Butler, McGee, Buehler and Phillips are all hits.
Hamlin, Brewster, both Williams, Hodge and Johnson are are still TBD but at least with the team (assuming Johnson gets on the PS)
Smith and Mickens are the only clear misses so far. And both of them were cut last year, so all of the players who they kept from the draft last year, they kept again this year, which is a good sign.

At this point it looks like it may turn out to have quite a few players come out of it considering how much of a quantity over quality back-end heavy draft it was.

if he can't even make the Rams

do we really want him? I think we traded him because he was likely to get cut anyway, we were lucky to get something for him. I guess the question is whether he’s better than Williams or Williams. I don’t think the staff thinks so.

by scottmaui on Sep 4, 2010 6:46 PM CDT up reply actions

At this point you'd have to say no

He is what he is, and it isn’t good. At this moment in time he MAY be as good a Nickel LB as either of the Williams’s, but he has ZERO upside, he is not going to get any better. He’s peaked, if you want to call his skills a peak. You can’t say that for the WIlliams’s.
