I can't imagine going with fewer than 5
But Jerry Jones was talking about the possibility of keeping 4 yesterday morning on a radio talk show.
by Blue Eyed Devil on Sep 4, 2010 2:09 PM CDT up reply actions
I'd hate to
loose both Crayton and Hurd. Not much game NFL experience behind Austin and Roy if we do. That would be a total of what 10 games max between Bryant, Ogletree, Holley?
It actually wouldn’t surprise me.
Has the whole world gone crazy? Am I the only one around here who gives a s#!t about the rules?!?
I think he'd wanna be a Cowboy
but I don’t know if he’d wanna be the 3rd or 4th WR when he can go to Minny or the Rams and be the #1 or #2.
he gets 7 mil no matter what
but whatever he signs for, the Hawks have to pay the rest to make it 7 mil.
For instance, if the Vikes sign him to a $1 million dollar contact, the Hawks have to pay him 6 million. So no matter what, he’s getting 7 mil.
Yep too.
Heard it from Gil Brant on Sirius. That’s a pretty damn good source. Take it to the bank. TJ gets $7m this year. New team can pay vet min and Seattle would still pay the remainder of the $7m.
He and Antonio Bryant
can hang out together

What if they defer comp to next year??
does that impact the 7 million this year?
I'm all for Ogletree and Holley if thats the case...

dont be greedy Hurd
its not really going to help you at this time. take lesson of whats happened recently when it comes to those that are in it for themselves and more importantly take this as an opportunity.
-1
He’s not being greedy he’s not a super star… its not like he’s holding out asking for millions he’s just saying my worth on this team is more then a pay cut… Would you take a pay cut at your job if you know another company is willing to pay you the same if not more?
Whether you think you can or you think you can't either way your right

Don't know for sure if he can get that with another team
But yeah, I can see why he might not want to take a pay cut.
Gee, I wonder what could have been done differently in the past to free up some money (cough) Roy Williams’ contract (cough).
Sorry. Just had to take my baseball bat to that equine carcass.
If at first you don't succeed - blame someone else.
i actually have thx
i stayed with a company for 2 years longer than i really wanted to because i was loyal. i watched dozens of people leave for better money and i stuck around to show my loyalty. i left in feb and landed a job making twice that. so i actually have been there and no what its like to be basically crapped-on for doing the “noble” thing.
“hes not being greedy, hes not a superstar”. EXACTLY … hes not star so he needs to watch what he does, cuz that could get him cut. thats what I am saying.
my tone is more of a word of advice (as if he could hear me). when it happened to me, i made sure i made it was clear … that it was to be apart of something and not the money. unfortunately for me it didnt work out … but i would still follow the same advice.
Had he come out early and been #1
I think he would have had Norval Turner coaching him in SF, and his whole career may have been different.

I don't blame Hurd
Jerry’s paying RW umpteen million dollars and wants to lowball Hurd? to agree to a pay cut?
Hurd is right in assuming he can catch on with another team, be a badass on STs, and be further up the depth chart. Why should he take a paycut to “guarantee” his spot on the roster?

Who will pay him more?
I believe he’s currently making $1.75 million. Who knows how much is being offered by the Cowboys, I doubt it’s less than $1 million. You think somebody else is going to pay him that much? Maybe, I’m not sure. I doubt it’s a sure thing.
by StillHateTheGiants on Sep 4, 2010 3:20 PM CDT up reply actions
I didn't say anyone would pay him "more".
I said I could see why he doesn’t want to take less.
"We'll see." --Bill Parcells
If he gets in an argument because of what RW makes, he's a fool
He needs to make decisions solely based on his situation. That kind of nonsense of worrying about someone else’s paycheck will just screw him up.

Heck no I don't blame hurd...
Why take less when Miami is waiting to sign you for more then what your making now… heck no.
In this league you have a small window to make as much as you can before it closes on you. True, players should have a level of loyalty but ask Crayton about loyalty when it comes down to dollars and cents…
Whether you think you can or you think you can't either way your right
by UnNessecsary Roughness on Sep 4, 2010 2:27 PM CDT reply actions
i think this money talk gets to your head
talk about loyalty … last time i checked Crayton wanted out.
make as much as you can … sure thats a grand idea … but just keep in mind it may be the reason you dont have a team at this time (revis, VJ).
Only thing I blame Hurd for
is coming out and saying he would do whatever it takes to remain a Cowboy. Don’t say that if you really don’t mean it. I wouldn’t take a paycut either
exactly...
within reason.. play on all special teams… learn to play Safety, learn to kick to be a holder… whatever… but don’t mess with a mans money…
Guys making Max contracts can afford a cut but the guys on the low end of the roster its more significant to take such a cut.
Miami wouldn’t let the ink dry on the release paper work before signing Hurd if he hit the wire trust me on that.
Whether you think you can or you think you can't either way your right
by UnNessecsary Roughness on Sep 4, 2010 2:33 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, I think there'd be a few teams right there with 'em.
Teams need guys like Sam Hurd. Is Holley ready to take his place? Maybe the coaches think so.
"We'll see." --Bill Parcells
Not So Sure
The might all wait to see if he clears wavers, or talk pay cut with his agent before they claim him. I would think other teams would want to renegotiate his contract amount in order to sign him. It is a lot of $$$ for a 5th receiver. Lots of guys hitting the wire today at league minimum. Just business
Golden Rule: He who has the gold makes the rules.
I'm crossing my fingers Sean Lissemore makes the team
If another team takes him, then we’ll miss out on a future HOF DE.
And considering most of our D-line is on a one year contract (besides Price Bent, Rat, and Olshansky is on a two year) that is not something we can afford.

Calvin Watkins: Cowboys cut CB Bryan McCann. He might go to practice squad.

I'm almost positive McCann doesn't make it through the waivers
a Good CB with speed and return ability. He’ll get gobbled up in a second.
Dumb move.

CBs right now
Are getting snatched up by all kinds of teams. There’s a lot of teams taking a lot of fliers out on guys.
Minnesota and Baltimore come to mind immediately.

That's what I was afraid you'd say.
They’re going with 4 CBs, then and counting on Ball and Akwazi for depth.
"We'll see." --Bill Parcells
McCann's preseason stats
McCann tied for second with 13 tackles and he led the Cowboys in punt return average at 10.8. He also averaged 24 yards a kick return.
It is silly to think a Good CB/returner is not going to get picked up. I don’t know what Jerry is thinking.
2009 BTB Fantasy Champ... Deal with it
If McCray makes the team over him I'm going to puke
McCray is just another Keith Davis.
2009 BTB Fantasy Champ... Deal with it
McCray will Make the team
And I do think he’s another Keith Davis/Pat Watkins
I haven’t seen anything out of him as a safety. I like Church much better, I really really hope they hold onto Church.
by Blue Eyed Devil on Sep 4, 2010 2:42 PM CDT up reply actions
McCann
had a rough outing in the last preseason game. Wasn’t surprised by this move, I had Gordon making the squad.
Brandon Marshall is going to take advantage of any rookie undrafted or first rounder
And I thought Gordon actually looked worse.
2009 BTB Fantasy Champ... Deal with it
THey are probably looking to the game day roster makeup
McCray would never be active unless there are injuries, which is kinda the point I guess. But, with 2 S’s who cna play CB I guess it’s a calculated risk. He wasn’t a high draft pick so maybe he makes it through waivers.
"I just wrote the check, it's up to you guys to cash it!" - Jimmy Johnson to defense after failed attempt on 4th down deep inside Cowboy territory. AND THEY DID!!!!
McCann I mean
"I just wrote the check, it's up to you guys to cash it!" - Jimmy Johnson to defense after failed attempt on 4th down deep inside Cowboy territory. AND THEY DID!!!!
The one thing you can say, is that McCann is the least likely to get picked up by another team
McCray’s special teams play is known
Gordon has been featured as a CB this pre-season and has had multiple stints in the NFL, he’s very well known
And there’s absolutely no doubt that every scouting department in the NFL has tape of the UDFA Church doing a great job of covering Antonio Gates – one of the hardest assignments for an SS.
McCray, Gordon, and Church will absolutely not clear waivers. So I guess McCann would be the best shot to sneak to the P-Squad
by Blue Eyed Devil on Sep 4, 2010 2:47 PM CDT up reply actions
McCann is a good punt and kick returner
teams are always looking for those guys.
2009 BTB Fantasy Champ... Deal with it
seems like McCann played better than Gordon in the Dolphins game
so I was actually expecting Gordon to be cut, especially for the price difference
Holy Crap Jarron Gilbert was cut
he was always a better fit as a 3-4 DE. Get ’em Jerry
2009 BTB Fantasy Champ... Deal with it
you do realize that would make keeping Lissemore even more difficult
are you willing to lose the future HOF Lissemore for Gilbert?
Maybe he was just a better fit...

"I just wrote the check, it's up to you guys to cash it!" - Jimmy Johnson to defense after failed attempt on 4th down deep inside Cowboy territory. AND THEY DID!!!!
i read it on the DMN blog...
Some one had commented on a blog post that the sources close to the Jets GM are mentioning abt a trade between the Boys and the Jets for revis and newman plus draft picks…
we can't afford Revis
and we don’t need him. the basics don’t add up
Revis is 100000000 times better than Newman....and younger.
This defense could be 10 times more aggresive going after the QB with Revis and jenkins in the corners.
you're paying newman about 8.5 per year.
he signed a 50.2 million 6 year extension about 2 – 3 years ago. He’ll cot you more as time goes by and he’s been hurt. It makes all the sense in the wor to pay average of 10 million per year to a guy like Revis who’s 10 times better. Revis could cover the entire side of the field like Deon used to do. You would constantly have 8 in the box and better your blitzes and run deffense.
+1
a good organization is always working the cap situation to make room for talent, either internal or free agents. We’ve got Austin, Free, and others we may need to pay soon. (has Ratliff gotten his due yet?)
again....you're paying newman an AVERAGE of 8.5...
I have not seen the details but I have a feeling his contract is back loaded as they all are. So newman will start costing probably about 10 to12 million per year soon….if you can get revis for about 10 million or 12 million, you’re getting a better and younger player……not exactly for much more money.
okay, I see your point
but if the numbers do work out like that, we’d have to give up too much in terms of draft picks to make it worth it to the Jets
Dallas Can Afford Anybody and Everything
I don’t buy into this budget baloney

Regarding the tender for Hurd
it works both ways, if they tender low the player might sign somewhere else and clearly they wanted him in camp. Now he’s overvalued but the team ends up with nothing on the cut.
Hurd has every right not to take the cut. The cowboys can’t trade at this payroll level.
This is small stuff, I’d rather see new WR’s anyway. Hurd has done very little in games that have mattered. It does highlight other excesses like Williams and much more than that but this happens everywhere in the league. Hurd’s tender was an excess as well, I doubt he will get this comp somewhere else. Then again I don’t think that was the most important thing to him,he wants to be in the rotation. I wish him well.

Don't Forget
Preseason superstar Evan Oglesby. Roster spots are precious, and guys like him can be found on the street. If he was that great, San Diego wouldn’t have let him go.
That sounds crazy
Must be a veteran on the horizon or a trade for the Jet holdout
teddy williams?
maybe they don’t want him of the street, he maybe would be oficially the 4th CB, but in the game they will put some ala ball or AOA, just to secure he would not be claimed by other team

Then why cut McCann? DAMN IT.

Keeping 3 corners is a terrible idea
especially with Newman being injured a lot
Corners get injured all the time
3 corners are starters. You have to count on playing your 4th at some point in the season.

Hope this has educated someone.

There has to be SOMETHING in the works
its crazy to go into the season with 3 cbs…and I have a hard time believing they are keeping wall over the guys they cut.
He was a bit older and made some bad moves
But youre right….personally though I would take Nnamdi over Revis
I think Wade is confident he has the ability to adjust
idk though, I’m not a fan of switching back and forth between positions. I say get as good as you can at one thing…
those guys are going to see significant PT
are we ok with AOA coming off of injury playing significant time as a cb? the dime cb is important.
Or I guess we have enough faith in those younger safeties
to stick ball there and have one of them over the top?
No it makes sense
Alan Ball and Kwasi are both esentially CBs playing safety
2009 BTB Fantasy Champ... Deal with it
Does this mean 9 LB's????
Gordon got chewed up against Miami and looked real passive.
Wall certainly looked like a gonner so perhaps they have a pickup in mind. I wish they thought this way about the oline as well.
Where does the extra roster spot go?
I think we’re going 7 on the defensive line.
We’re keeping 3 nose tackles
Then I shall shut my face
I’m not talking about his speed, I know he’s a burner, I’m talking about game speed.
did you see him him make that int in the last pre-season game?

The team wants AOA active on gameday, thus being our #4 CB makes sense
If Akwasi is indeed our new returner, the team needs to find a role for him within the defense. Having him as our #4 CB makes total sense. Many believe he will be a future starter at either FS or CB.
Yep
But they could rotate Ball into the corner, and bring in Hamlin or Church to replace him. In theory, we could go five deep on game day.
But they have been saying all along that's the plan

Rotoworld’s take:
It’s fair to say the Cowboys got the better end of the trade that sent T Alex Barron to Dallas for Carpenter. The Ohio State product surprisingly lost out to Larry Grant for the starting weak-side linebacker gig by showing inferior physicality.
That's a very nice way to put it

But he keeps his fat mouth shut. Patrick, can you hear that from San Diego?
I wonder if it's too long.....
on the PS for some of these guys. It’s bad enough to be inactive on a squad I feel bad for Holly, Dixon and Bright if they go through it all again. Third time for Dixon essentially.
A change of scene and players might be a way to go for all parties. Could you imagine cutting Dixon again for example?
I'm not sure if they'll put Dixon on the PS
With other guys they tell them they want to do that, and with him they apparently didn’t this time. So he may be history.
for Holley, another year on the PS could be good for him. And who knows maybe into the season once they feel more comfortable with Dez taking a full role, and maybe after Hurd has gotten some time to show some stuff, they’ll trade Hurd and move Holley up to the 53, since he can play that STs role, and Hurd is needed as an insurance WR more right now to start the season since Dez missed much of camp and all of preseason.
Good points.....

It’s time to get medieval and make changes and the starters shouldn’t be protected if the moves better the team.
They have the right idea in Jacksonville....

Pessimists say the cup is half-empty, while optimists say it's half-full. Well, isn't it both? Realist Larry, 2009

Butler, B. Williams, M Hamlin, Beuhler… I think thats it. 6 guys from any draft a good pickins
by nicholas.rodriguez on Sep 4, 2010 6:06 PM CDT up reply actions
Plus McGee
With Hodge on the PUP list and Phillips on the IR.
The only ones who aren’t still around are DeAngelo Smith, Mike Mickens and Manny Johnson.
yeah how can we forget about McGee
that draft class is actually yielding some good players a year out.
McGee showing real promise as a developmental QB, backup of the future material at the very least.
Butler has separated himself from the pack of 09 LBs as a strong pass rusher and complete LB ready to play now, plus a quality STer.
Buehler looks to be real gem, a rare weapon that really tilts the FP battle in Cowboys’ favor.
Hamlin still a big unknown but showing some promise. Brewster and both Williams still projects but showing enough promise to continue.
Phillips should be back next year as a reliable, versatile player.
Hodge is still complete unknown.
Even Manny Johnson has been useful on the PS and could be there again. That’s not a hit but it’s not a total miss either, for the our second choice in the seventh round (229th overall) at least he’s still around.
So at this point I would say Butler, McGee, Buehler and Phillips are all hits.
Hamlin, Brewster, both Williams, Hodge and Johnson are are still TBD but at least with the team (assuming Johnson gets on the PS)
Smith and Mickens are the only clear misses so far. And both of them were cut last year, so all of the players who they kept from the draft last year, they kept again this year, which is a good sign.
At this point it looks like it may turn out to have quite a few players come out of it considering how much of a quantity over quality back-end heavy draft it was.
A lot of guys-that's a lot of youth in 2 years
Some will be starters, some will contribute.
Just wish some were OL

He is what he is, and it isn’t good. At this moment in time he MAY be as good a Nickel LB as either of the Williams’s, but he has ZERO upside, he is not going to get any better. He’s peaked, if you want to call his skills a peak. You can’t say that for the WIlliams’s.
"I just wrote the check, it's up to you guys to cash it!" - Jimmy Johnson to defense after failed attempt on 4th down deep inside Cowboy territory. AND THEY DID!!!!
yeah that's the thing
he may be as good as them right now (and surely better than Jason), but he’d just be another “progress stopper” for younger guys with more upside.
I do not
Thank you #22, for everything you did for the Cowboys. There will never be another one like you.
