Possible pickups off waivers?

Here are some of the names that caught my eye.

Hartwig, C, Pittsburg - He is a two year starter (31 yrs old) that got bounced by Pouncey.  He's 315, so perhaps he could be a G/C type that could eventually bump Holland off the roster.  Would be nice to have someone who could play G or C, push Gurode and Davis and buy us some time for the young guys to mature.  He wouldn't be cheap as he can probably start for a lot of teams.

Fenuki Tupou, G, Philadelphia - He was a rookie last year and I remember liking him coming out of college. He's a big, athletic guy but is raw. Perhaps Hud can do something with him.

Sean Ryan, TE, Tennessee - We drafted him 6 years ago, and if I remember right, wanted to keep him (or bring him back?) but something happened.  Seems like a good fit for what we're missing, a blocking TE.

James Hardy, WR, Buffalo - The only reason I mention him is that I remember the Cowboys liked him a lot in the draft.  This is only his 3rd year in the league, so perhaps moving from the wasteland that is Buffalo will change his trajectory.  I can't see him bumping Hurd though, since I doubt a 6'6" dude can play special teams well.

Anyone see anything else?  Hartwig seems the most intriguing, although I'd think he'd have a better opportunity than as a backup.

No to Hartwig, people hate Gurode’s inconsistency, well, Hartwig is consistently bad.

No to Tupou, the Eagles acquired Reggie Wells because they were growing tired of Tupou and Andrews, Wells was a pretty average to bad Guard in Zona… That should tell you quite a bit.

No to Hardy, he can’t play STs and isn’t that good as a receiver… And you can’t have a 4th receiver that can’t play in most ST units, even less a 6th one that can’t play at all.

Ryan is interesting.

Agree with you

I don’t know if Ryan is worth a spot though.

Thank you #22, for everything you did for the Cowboys. There will never be another one like you.

Didn't know much about Hartwig

I still think Tupou is intriguing. He’s only in his second year, and he was really green coming out of college, so I don’t think you can close the book on him yet. I don’t think he can help this year but would be more of a developmental pickup. We don’t have much in the pipeline in the interior line.

There's 2 guys that would be good FB options

Eddie WIlliams FB from CHI with receiving skills, and Spencer Havner FB from GB

There are a lot of TE options out there also, I like Garrett Mills from MIN. He was a really good pass catching TE at Tulsa, they tried to convert him to FB because of his size. I’m not sure about his blocking ability, but he can definitely catch. He had a highlight in one of the preseason games this season.

Indy released Adam Terry OT, if he’s healthy he’d be a good pick up.

A TE from The U who is a decent blocker and decent receiver, Dedrick Epps is interesting. He went to camp with SD and beat out the guy Dallas signed a couple weeks back, Farr.

Fenuki Tupou, G, Philadelphia – He was a rookie last year and I remember liking him coming out of college. He’s a big, athletic guy but is raw. Perhaps Hud can do something with him.

Tupou was one of the few Eagles cuts that I liked as a player. I was hoping he’d stick. He’ll find a home somewhere, I suspect. If not, I’ll be thrilled to have him back on the P.S. That said, he needs a lot of work, and if he were forced into action right now it wouldn’t be pretty. With their really weak depth along the OL, I think the Cowboys should be looking for a guy that can play right now if need be, not a project with upside down the line.

by JimmyK on Sep 5, 2010 6:30 AM CDT reply actions

Agreed

We do need help right now, but we also need to get some guys for the future. I’d prefer to carry another lineman as a developmental type than Leon Williams. We have no potential players at guard, unless you count Bright, who is going on the PS, or Brewster, who is currently playing tackle.

Another guy out there is Guy Whimper from the GIants. I don’t know much about him, I wonder if he’s any better than Holland.

Worst football name ever
Guy Whimper

He needs a legal name change to Brick Thunderbolt or he’ll never make it in this league.

With their really weak depth along the OL.

Which team doesn’t have a really weak depth along the OLine? The Eagles? Nick Cole is a decent backup but he’s supposed to start at RG… I don’t think that Wells should start, he kind of sucked in Arizona… Other than that what do you guys have? Jean-Gilles? We have our own version of an overweight and average backup Guard…

Oh, yeah, your team OLineman are younger… But they’re more injury prone than a lot of older OLineman…

Cole is going to begin the season at RG as you mentioned, but the thinking is that Wells will eventually take over there once he gets acclimated with the offense. Also, as you noted, Cole is a good backup that can play all 3 positions along the interior OL. And yes, again, as you mentioned, Jean-Gilles has been called upon on multiple occasions and has played well. Herremans and Wells are the backups at LT and RT, respectively, and both have experience starting at tackle. There’s legitimate depth at every OL position. With Dallas, there isn’t.

On a side note, I’m not going to pretend I’ve watched tape on Wells and predict he’s on his way to Canton – Conversely, you probably shouldn’t pretend you have a truly informed opinion on him either by brazenly saying “he kinda sucked in Arizona,” without anything to back it up. He’s been a starter for the Cards since 2004 – He must be doing something right.

by JimmyK on Sep 5, 2010 12:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Leonard Davis was a starter for the Cardinals back then too

What was your opinion when the Cowboys hired him and paid him as much? At least at Guard he sucks much less… Just because he was a starter in Zona, it doesn’t mean that he was any good. You just have to look at their running game, or lack of.

Jean-Gilles starting and playing well is a big overstatement. Cole is a good backup, backup is the key word here (you know what I mean if you saw the Cowboys games last year and I know you did). Herremans is a really good Guard, when healthy, but he’s a much worse LT than Peters and moving him to LT means that a much lesser LG prospect is going to take his place… That’s stupid, weakening 2 positions along the OLine…

That’s what I meant with really weak.

So you’re making a weak generalization about Wells based on the Cardinals’ team, without citing actual constructive analysis of his play specifically. Hardly enough to say “he kind of sucked in Arizona.” Nice try though.

Ok

Pro Football Focus:

Fixing the line is not just a case of changing one or two parts — every position and current alternative option at that position is below average or worse as a pass blocker.

Link

Fortunately, there’s hope for you:

and Beanie Wells looking like a keeper, the relative merits of this line (i.e. being much better run than pass-blockers) may be better suited to what lies ahead.

Link

Unfortunately, Reid likes his passing game more.

Football outsiders:
For the past few years Wells was a LG and this numbers are form that side:
Left Tackle runs: 3.8, 22nd.
Mid/Guard runs: 3.94, 24th.

I’ve seen him play, the stats and analyisis of both sites validate what I saw, Wells is a really average performer, he’s going to have a lot of problems taking the job from Cole’s hands.

Awesome. You looked up a couple links after I challenged you, and still have nothing, since neither link even makes mention of Wells. Again, like I said, I’m not going to pretend I’ve specifically watched and critiqued a guard on the Arizona Cardinals – You probably shouldn’t either.

Yeah, they don’t mention him directly… They just said:

every position and current alternative option at that position is below average or worse as a pass blocker

Key word is every, as in Wells and company.

the relative merits of this line (i.e. being much better run than pass-blockers)

The keywords are this and line, as in a line that run blocks better than pass protect.

I’m sorry that I only looked into 2 websites, but you asked me to come forward with actual analysis and I did, I cited a couple of very respected sites that run stats. I won’t do anything further because if I research further into this you will still claim that all of them are flawed.

You’re good at that.

Amazing they went to the Super Bowl 2 years ago and went to the playoffs last year with an OL full of below average players.

Did you saw them play?

With Fitzgerald, Boldin and company, Warner was releasing the ball in a boatload of 3 and 4 step drops.

And they called lots of max protection packages, with those receivers some would get open.

But as I said, any analysis would be flawed in your opinion. Good for me, thought about that before I started looking for more information to validate my point of view.

David Martin TE from Miami

A great pickup and should be a top priority. I do not trust Martellus for a second. We need someone more dependable on the field. I think Miami cut him for the money and not his talent and we need to go after him.

Spencer Havner TE Packers

The cowboys need to take a hard look at this guy! I’ve seen allot of green bay games, he can play. Not only does he play t.e. but lb too. Hes so versitile, multiple position player, would be great for special teams as well. He was a lb at UCLA and while the packers used him on their scout team to work as oppositions tight ends he kept making plays. He got the chance to play T.E. on sundays as well as LB and he shined.

Green Bay just has to many good / promising prospects at T.E. they couldnt release. I really hope they take a look at this guy,

i agree on Havner

dude can play both sides but looked great at TE, i can’t beleive they let him go. the packers had a boat load of TE/hybrid Fbs that won’t make the roster that looked great. it should be one of teams we look at for help in that area

Otis Hudson OG

He’s 6’5" 320lbs and a bit raw still. He was a 5th rounder but the Bengals had to cut him. They’re hoping to get him to their PS. He may be worth a look:

Havner signed with DET

So he didn’t make it very far down the waiver list. Probably a lot of claims put in for him.

Yeah, I think that is working against us

It is unlikely a good O Line prospect is going to get by all the teams ahead of the Cowboys that would need it.

If at first you don't succeed - blame someone else.
