Depth Charts of the Phillips Era

With the release of the final roster cuts heading into the 2010 season, I thought it would be a good time to look back at what, if any, improvement the Cowboys have achieved in the last four years. So I've made a table of the last four years of depth charts, including this one, and then assigned a simple 1-5 rating to each player for each year's performance.

EDIT: Notes about the ratings:
  • In all cases where a player went to the Pro Bowl, I chose not to argue with the fans, coaches, and players of the NFL, and assigned the highest rating for that player's season.
  • For non-starters, the ratings are biased toward skill over performance. For instance, Jon Kitna had zero snaps in 2009, but was still an average QB.
  • For starters, the ratings are biased toward performance over skill. For instance, Ken Hamlin had a huge dropoff in performance from '07 to '08.
  • There are a lot of average players in the league. A lot of them aren't starters. If a player outshines a number of other teams' starters at his position, then he is at the very least an above average player.

EDIT: Below are all the changes I've made so far based on your feedback. I'll keep updating this list as you keep convincing me I'm wrong. :)

  1. Michael Hamlin, 2008, 2 (accidentally omitted due to position confusion - I'm going with SS)
  2. Barry Church, 2010, 2 -> 1
  3. Danny McCray, 2010, 2 -> 1
  4. Terrell Owens, 2008, 5 -> 4
  5. Roy E. Williams, 2008, 2 (another accidental omission, mid-season trade)
  6. Roy E. Williams, 2009-2010, 4 -> 3
  7. Dez Bryant, 2010, 4 -> 3
  8. Doug Free, 2009-2010, 3 -> 4
  9. Stephen Hodge, 2009-2010, 2 -> 1
  10. Sean Lee, 2010, 3 -> 2

EDIT: Leave it to OCC to point out some interesting statistics that make the storyline more compelling :) He summed up the stars for each year in a comment below. I'm going to take a slightly different approach in that I'll just sum up the stars for the top 53 guys for each year, including those on IR. This should help make it an apples-to-apples comparison as the number of players that were on our roster at some point varies year to year.

Thanks!

I have a whole new level of respect for guys like OCC and Aaron now. Despite doing very little actual writing, it still took me a solid 8 hours to do this!

Very, very nice

Great effort, dude! And you know that I just had to sum up the stars, right?

07: 156, 08: 154, 09: 160, 10:168 – I excluded the players on IR and all players in brackets.

The high number for this year’s roster makes me wonder whether you’ve overvalued the rookies and UDFAs relative to the previous years.

by One.Cool.Customer on Sep 5, 2010 4:27 AM CDT reply actions

haha!

Of course you summed up the stars :) That’s awesome and it didn’t even occur to me.

There is a real possibility that I’m overvaluing this year’s new players. But I did make a concerted effort not to. Here’s the breakdown:

Chris Gronkowski – 2
Dez Bryant – 4
Sam Young – 1
Phil Costa – 1
Sean Lissemore – 1
Josh Brent – 1
Sean Lee – 3
Leon Williams – 2
Barry Church – 2
Akwasi Osusu-Ansah – 2
Danny McCray – 2

I think you could argue for knocking any of those guys down a notch (aside from the 1’s of course), so in that sense, I suppose there’s an inherent optimism in my 2010 ratings. I’m not sure if one of those is obviously wrong though.

by speedmetal on Sep 5, 2010 12:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Interesting post Speedmetal, a trip down short-memory lane.

I agree with the most of your ratings but since that’s no fun I’ll be pedantic and list everything I disagree with;

Until Marion Barber he proves on the field he’s got some spring back he’s a 3 Star back at present (over the last 2 years he’s averaged 935 yards at 4.0 a carry = average).

For what WR Roy Williams has done here so far I don’t think you can give him more than 3 Stars either year.

Dez Bryant getting 4 Stars this year is based on only hope at this point. Dez has not even caught a pass in the NFL (not even in preseason!) so calling him a 4 Star player is a stretch.

2007 Miles Austin should only be a 2 Star player (he caught 5 passes and 0 Td’s that season) as he was still very raw then.

In 2007 and 2008 I wouldn’t rate Flozell Adams a 5 Star player. He probably led the NFL in penalties during that time and also got Romo smacked around in more than a few games. He gets a 4 Star for 07 and probably a 3 Star for 08 from me.

I would give Doug Free 4 Stars for his 10 games at RT in 09 and think he’s shown nothing to make me change my mind that he’s on pace for anything but a 4 Star performance at LT in 2010.

Alex Barron – I would only give him 2 Stars. He was a disappointment in St Louis and he’s proven nothing here so far.

Leonard Davis doesn’t deserve 5 Stars for his 07/08/09 campaigns. I’d give him 4 Stars for 07 and maybe just barely for 08 too. 3 Stars for 09 and he should start this year as a 3 Star player.

Andre Gurode doesn’t get 5 Stars for 09 from me. 4 Stars is plenty for that year and he should start at 4 Stars this year.

I would be tempted to give Spears 3 Stars instead of 4 for his 07 and 08. He did have a career year in 09 so maybe 4 Stars is fair enough for that. And Jason Hatcher getting 3 Stars for four straight years is a stretch. I can’t think of a single memorable play that guy has made in his entire time here. He’s a 2 Star player until he does something noticeable.

Greg Ellis 4 Stars in 07.

With Sean Lee apparently getting dropped from the Nickle because he’s not ready I don’t see how he can be a 3 Star player. He’s a 2 Star for now. And Stephen Hodge has had a serious knee op and for all we know at present he might not play again so I think he should be 1 Star until he proves otherwise.

I’d go 4 Stars for Terrence Newman in 08 (injuries etc) and possibly 09 too. He’s a great cover man but a poor tackler and struggles to find the ball in the air.

Alan Ball has done nothing to prove that he’s a 3 Star player yet. He’s a 2 star until he shows he can make plays on the ball and make the last line of defense tackles necessary at Safety.

Safety Roy Williams and Safety Ken Hamlin both 5 Stars in 07 is overkill. I’d go a 3 Star year Williams and a 4 Star for Hamlin.

Barry Church = 1 Star. Probably Danny McCray too.

I couldn’t give David Buehler a 5 Star performance for 09. When Folk went mad the team went and hired someone else (who also sucked) rather than give Buehler a go. He was half a kicker in 09 and although he was a great KO guy and that’s not enough to be a 5 Star player, overall he’s a 3 Star in 09. I agree with your 4 Star projection for Buehler in 2010 though as he’s looked great in kickoffs and good at FG’s this preseason.

Well, that late night rant was fun. Thanks for the article I’m off to bed.

Goodnight all.

by Luke. on Sep 5, 2010 8:56 AM CDT reply actions

I'll agree with most of this.

I’d leave Ball at 3 stars for last year. He was average as a CB and a Safety in the snaps he played.

Hatcher made some good plays last season. I’d rate him as slightly above average as a pass rusher but avg or a little below avg as a run stopper so a 3 star avg makes sense to me.

The author explained why he gave Gurode and Davis 5 stars. They got the Pro Bowl votes so he wasn’t going to go against that. I do agree, they made it more on past reputation than superior performance last season.

I’d would add:

Siavii would be a 2 star last year IMHO. He wasn’t a total sieve in his limited snaps. He played better than most give him credit for…especially in comparison to Ratliff. He played well enough to have Wade give him a shout out and make it a tough decision to replace him with Brent. That was more of an upside and money move than a “he was one of the worst at his position” move.

Terrell Owens in 2008 wouldn’t get 5 stars from me. He couldn’t get off of jams and dropped too many passes. I’d give him 4 stars and the bus ticket out of town that Jerry gave him.

Ken Hamlin should get 3 stars for 2008 and 2009. He was merely avg. Sure, he wasn’t living up to his contract, but, I wouldn’t say he was below avg.

Other than that, very good job overall. Thanks for those 8 hours of hard work.

Lonewolfz28,

I totally agree TO was not a 5 Star in 2008 (don’t know how I missed that one!). And I also think your 3 Stars for Ken Hamlin in 08/09 is a good assessment.

It was late at night and I skimmed through the first paragraph and missed where Speedmetal said that he would give Pro Bowlers 5 Stars. My bad. So I’ll just say I gave them my personal rating regardless of Pro Bowl status.

by Luke. on Sep 5, 2010 5:37 PM CDT up reply actions

I do agree with your personal ratings on the Pro Bowlers though.

Several selections each year seem to be based more on past reputation than current performance.

You guys are right about TO in '08

I’m going through these one by one now that the system is letting me make edits again. Again, thanks for all the feedback. It’s already getting better…

So I’m putting TO’s ‘08 down to 4 stars. And after further thought, I’m also lowering Roy Williams (WR) and Dez Bryant. to 3 stars and Miles’ ’07 to 2 stars. Those are good edits. Thanks!

by speedmetal on Sep 6, 2010 12:07 AM CDT up reply actions

thanks for the analysis!

I’m thinking about your arguments right now, Luke, but my first thought is that I may be misrepresenting my own rating system. It isn’t based solely on performance, but also some element of skill. So, for instance, Jon Kitna did not have average QB performances in ’08 & ’09, but he was still an average QB.

Still, you make some good points and I’m going through them now…

oops, time flies

Kitna’s only been here one year…but you get the point :)

Marion Barber

is a top 15 running back in my opinion by performance, or by skill. That puts him above half the league’s starters, not to mention all the backups. The ratings aren’t just relative to starters, but to all players on NFL rosters.

Do you disagree that he’s a top-15 back?

by speedmetal on Sep 5, 2010 11:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Okay, I'm with you on Free, Hodge, and Lee

Making those changes now. The way I decided to handle Buehler was to rate him strictly as a KO specialist in ’09 and in ’10 as the full range of duties of a kicker.

by speedmetal on Sep 6, 2010 1:39 AM CDT up reply actions

Fantastic effort / I like the visuals

Also agree with most ratings, and double down on OCCs caution for rating players before the season starts. I do understand you are projecting and I wish for many 5 stars in 2010 of course!

I disagree with your OLine ratings.
Gurode and Davis were our weak links for all of last year.

Also remember all the over the head shotgun snaps we had to live through in ‘07? The one great scramble where Romo had to chase the ball for about 20 yards back wards and made the great play getting about a 2 yard game? The game where he sent 2 over Romo’s reach?

The good writers here broke down the inside stunts during both the Minnesota playoff game and the Houston Pre Season game last year and this.
Both are excellent examples of how bad these two handle rushes and stunts that are anything more than one guy lined up on their nose coming straight forward. If this keeps up Romo will never have time to pass without running wide like he has to do so much of the time.

Also keep in mind Kosier calls the line blocks, not Gurode.
I have never heard of a Guard making the line calls before, this is the C job, but ours is not smart enough.

Speaking of Kosier I give him 4 stars across the board for not only calling the line play, but grading out as our best linemen game in and game out for the past 2 years. In ’08 when he had a foot injury we found out had bad Procter and Gurode were together and how much we missed Kosier.

I do agree with you on FLO however, despite the penalties he has been one of the NFL’s best LTs over the years. The two exceptions being in ’08 when he had injuries to his neck and hand on oppostie sides of his body leaving him with zero good wings. He should not have even been out there but we had nobody (MCQ?) to replace him.

Also runs to his side are our best producers (again thanks to past data delving posts from our beat writers here on BTB).

Colombo is our enforcer (think hockey goon) and is a powerful run blocker, but he is league average for a RT.

In all I would give your stars to the OL like this:
Flo 5 for ’07 / 4 for ’08 / 3 for ’09
Kosier 4 for ’07 / a + for ’08 as he only played 2 full games / 4 for ’09 / 4 for 10

Gurode 3 for ’07 / 4 for ’08 / 3 for ’09 / 3 (on a prayer) for 10
Davis 5 for ’07 / 4 for ’08 / 3 for ’09 / 3 (based on Pre Season) for 10
(by the way everybody say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Bigg today, he is 32)

Colombo 4 for ’07 / 4 for ’08 / 4 for half of ’09 – + for half / 3 for 10 until we see how the leg and psyche has healed.

Anyone have this problem? Every time I try to edit this post, it chops the content roughly in half, partway through an html tag attribute. It then doesn’t publish the update because the html isn’t valid. Has anyone seen this?

by speedmetal on Sep 5, 2010 1:18 PM CDT reply actions

i've emailed SBNation technical support

so far, I’ve put Church and McCray down to one star. And added Michael Hamlin’s 2008. I’d accidentally omitted it because I couldn’t remember if he played FS or SS, so I’m going with SS.

As soon as SBNation fixes the issue, I’ll post the updates.

I just looked at the code

and it may be too long. SB Nation has a limit on how much kb you can have before and after the break. I had the same issue with one of my ‘Trolling SB-Nation’ posts and had to revert to a very basic table format.

The easy thing to try would be to move the jump to below the legend.

Yeah, that was it

For some reason, on the initial post, it allowed me to put in 131kb of html source :) However, after that initial post, all edits seem to hit a hard limit close to, if not exactly 60kb. That means I’ve spent a few hours today just figuring out ways to cut the size of my post down by over 50% without losing content or presentation. What a pain in the @ss.

Thanks for the tip! I’m finally back in business.

I agree with Barber’s ranking, as well as most of the others. I think you put Barron one star too hi (as bad as he was in St. Louis, he should be a 2, IMO), and I don’t think Roy can be put as a 3 star player, bc he was out performed by a number 3 receiver last year. Methinks he needs to show a lot more this year to get that 3 star rating.

Fun exercise

Spencer with 5 stars? I would argue that he needs to show more and more consistency before he gets the same grade as Ware.

Doug Free already gets 4 stars? Why?

I can’t support your rating of Felix…yet. 3 for him until he gets through a full season without getting nicked.

I’d give Spears and Igor both 3 stars. Anything more is indefensible.

Sensei gets 4? Hmmmmm

I’d give Scandrick another star. He’s started and while he had a rough patch early last year, he got untracked. He’s a great #3 CB, IMO.

nice work

but i think people under estimate how good Flo really was/is. it wasn’t that Free out played Flo & won the job it was Jerrys decision based on saving money. Free is in a contract year so they used that as the excuse to release Flo but in reality we could’ve kept Free w/ a 2nd rd tender next season bc no one really kne who he was.
 i still think this OL would’ve been in better shape w/ Flo starting at LT & keeping Free as the swing tackle 1 more year bc theirs a lot of unknown about Free. also J.Allen & guys like that will be a handful for Free to handle but Flo did a great job even late in his career. i’m excited to see how Free does but i’m also worried about his ability in the pass rush.
 Ball was a below average CB & never broke the 4th spot so moving him to FS is more of a unknown. right now its a mystery as to how good/bad Ball will be but if not then i think Hamlin will be an option or Akwasi.
 also what has Akwasi done to be anything but a 1 star? he was 4th round draft pick thats an unknown right now.
 Lee is better then J.Williams & you can even put Leon above JWill. the same goes for Church, right now he’s a 1 star player that wasn’t even drafted.

by Va_Cowboy_Fan on Sep 7, 2010 12:29 PM CDT reply actions

Really?

Flo was gave up 7+ sacks the last couple seasons.
IIRC, he was one of the 10 worst in giving up QB pressures and hurries in the league.
He was resorting more and more to dirty tricks because he was getting beat by speed rushers.
He could no longer bend effectively to get and maintain leverage.
He was still good for quite a few drive stalling penalties per season.

Yeah, he was a beast in run blocking. But, his pass protection was getting to be mediocre…dangerously so.

Just one look at how he performed on the right side for Pittsburgh in the preseason should tell you the FO did the right thing by moving on.

actually i kinda of Agree with VA

While Flo sucked at Pass protection on the left side I think he would have been a great RT/ Swing Tackle. While His inablilty to deal with Speed rushers are well documented those flaws would have been minimized on the right side. And lets face it would it be nice to have “The Hotel” Instead of Alex Barron?

I think it was RT
The Steelers plan to keep Max Starks at left tackle this season, with newly signed Flozell Adams competing on the right side.
Adams isn’t a clear upgrade in pass protection, but we’ll see how long this lasts. While Starks can run block with the best of them, he’s short on athleticism. For now, the Steelers’ starting line looks to be LT Starks, LG Chris Kemoeatu, C Justin Hartwig, RG Trai Essex, RT Adams. Maurkice Pouncey will eventually win one of the inside spots. At least they’re not trying Essex at left tackle, an idea that had disaster written all over it.
