Cowboys Practice Squad Set

The cuts are in and the initial 53 is all set for the Cowboys. Now, for the practice squad players.

TEs Martin Rucker and Scott Chandler (Giants)

WRs Manny Johnson and Jesse Holley

OL Travis Bright and OT Cliff Louis (Lions)

RB Lonyae Miller

CB Teddy Williams

Star-divide

Here is a review of which players are eligible for the eight-man practice squad.

Players must meet one of the following criteria while previously not being on a practice squad more than two seasons:

*No accrued seasons of NFL experience.
*Free agents who were on an active roster for fewer than nine regular-season games during their accrued seasons.
*A season on the practice squad constitutes three weeks. There are provisions for a third season on a practice squad.

With the Cowboys going with just three true corners on the roster in Terence Newman, Mike Jenkins, and Orlando Scandrick, you would think that they would load up on a couple of practice squad candidates at that position.

But UDFA Bryan McCann was claimed by Baltimore and 6th-round pick Jamar Wall by Houston. DE Marcus Dixon, who spent the last two seasons on Dallas' practice squad was claimed by the NY Jets.

Also of note, NT Junior Siavii found a new home in Seattle with the Seahawks.

What a great source for all things Cowboys!

Glad we got Bright on the PS.

I don't know how noone pick him up. Was getting nervous and checked my phone all day to see if anyone picked him up!

This morning I read a report that Teddy Williams was told yesterday that he’d make the PS, which was before I read that McCann and Wall got signed. So they must’ve been think Teddy all along for the PS.

Plus, he's so raw that other teams passed him by.

Still frustrated by the Ravens taking McCann though. Dirty birds.

Was hoping for 2 CBs on the PS so they can bring one up whenever they need. But this squad will probably change like 20 times by the end of the year, except maybe for Miller and the wideouts.

stupid move to cut McCann 6' tall /4.28-40/ 40 1/2 in vert

their all jumping for joy over at the ravens sites about getting McCann, Ozzie says he’s the real deal & he’s been watching him for awhile. i could see cutting Gordon bc he’s just not that good & after 5 years of not sticking on a roster it was a good move.
McCann had the skill set to fill in for Newman or Jenkins by next season w/ not much drop off & could’ve played in the nickel/dime role right away, he could also play FS. the kid had 4.28 speed & was a decent returner. his potential is better then Scandricks will ever be, matter of fact Scandricks just a career nickel backer. i don’t understand how you keep a project like JWill when theirs no need too, those guys are a dime a dozen compared to a potential starting CB/returner that could’ve helped this year. we had to keep 5 ILBs bc the lack of progress JWill displayed but we only have 3 true CBs & let a good one go thinking we could sneak him on the PS.
Ozzie was laughing at Wade/Jerry for thinking they could pull a move off like that.
now were stuck w/ a track runner at CB thats never played football, of coarse he was going to the PS bc who would want him.
if anything they could’ve put Young on the pup list since he’s out 3-4 weeks & then put him on the PS or whatever after things settled down. the Ravens stole one from us but i guess 6 safetys, 5 ILBs, 5 OTs are better then a gem at CB. Akwasi better be ready bc their going to throw that kid in the fire this season

What?

I thought he’d be a decent 4th CB this season and good ST player who I thought deserved a roster spot, but that’s all I saw. Where are you getting this kind of projection for a guy who didn’t even get drafted.

McCann had the skill set to fill in for Newman or Jenkins by next season w/ not much drop off & could’ve played in the nickel/dime role right away, he could also play FS. the kid had 4.28 speed & was a decent returner. his potential is better then Scandricks will ever be, matter of fact Scandricks just a career nickel backer

You make it sound like the Cowboys just cut a Kyle Wilson, or a Devin McCourty. Let’s tap the brakes a little. He was an UDFA who looked good in pre-season games. It’s not a tragedy, and it’s not even a big deal. Wall also got signed by a team, and most people were disappointed with his play.

Thank you #22, for everything you did for the Cowboys. There will never be another one like you.

If you remember the 90s .............

You know the strength of that defense was the rotating DLine.
We had 7 starter quality DL in the 4-3 scheme and they rotated every game from start to finish.

Kept them fresh and hungry for tackles and sacks, competition was intense and it wore down the opposing OLine.

We did not get Neon Deion until after we won a SB, before that we were ok on the corners but had precious little reserve.

On Julius Jones ... KC Joyner says he was good when he had blocking
One of the difficulties in trying to grade players by statistics is simply gauging the impact that certain factors have on how those numbers were tallied.

For example, one of Bill James’ early sabermetric findings revolved around detailing just how much a stadium could influence a player’s statistics; he pointed out the effects that hitter-friendly Fenway Park had on Jim Rice and Fred Lynn before most everyone else had ever considered that idea.

There are certain ways that type of thinking can be applied to football. In the case of running backs, one of the methods I use is the good blocking yards per attempt (GBYPA) metric.
it should be noted that Jones and Forsett also posted quality GBYPA totals last year (6.5 for Jones, 7.7 for Forsett).

But what if Dallas did not have two 1st's that draft?

Spears might have been the guy. I know getting him was priority #1 for BP to begin the 3-4 switch. I wonder if they would have chosen Ware over Spears in that scenario.

Either way, that trade allowed Dallas to get both Ware and Spears and speed the process up.

And back to Ropuri’s comment, I’m pretty sure Tatum Bell was the RB they had targeted at the top of the 2nd, but DEN snapped him up, JuJo was the second choice.

by APerfectStar on Sep 6, 2010 12:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Precisely: APerfectStar

I know Spears went with the pick for Jones; it was the fact we had two and this mitigated the risk allowing Dallas or Jerry to insist on Ware with the first of the two ones.

by Iowacowboy on Sep 6, 2010 7:50 AM CDT up reply actions

True but

. . . see below and the point stands that the move down for an extra one was a good move, notwithstanding passing on Jackson; there were three good RBs and Dallas was not one player away from elite . . .

by Iowacowboy on Sep 6, 2010 7:52 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree. Julius was not one of Parcells better moves. I gave up on Julius on a play, an inside hand-off, where he

cleared the line untouched, and ran right into a safety, the last man to beat, standing flat-footed ten yards downfield. No juke, no head fake, no nothing. Jones ran right into the guy. It could have been a TD run, but Julius found a way to limit it to a first down.

From the Pride of Detroit blog:

Louis entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent from Morgan State in 2007. He signed with the Browns originally and has played for a number of teams since, including the Giants on a few separate occasions. In between his stints with the Giants, he played for the Jaguars, the UFL’s Florida franchise, the Cardinals and the Edmonton Eskimos of the CFL. Louis was just waived by the Giants on Aug. 20, only two weeks or so after signing with them again.

I don’t believe you can just turn a guy into a center with one training camp. I think you need to draft centers as centers.

Agree

He’s got the strength, now he just needs to keep working on the technique.

Only bad part is his injury history, and he’s a bit old to be a PS player, so he probably needs to show he can play backup sooner rather than later.

Glad they found Costa, that was a nice surprise finding a young center.

Not what I saw

Bright played really well at center and stunk it up at guard, thats why I thought he was going to be picked up. As a center.

Some of his Guard play was Bad

That’s why he should stick to that one thing.

I think his chances of making the active roster would increase if the coaching staff would just let him stick with one position and focus on perfecting the technique.

Just Imagine

If Bennett reached his potential

Miles Austin split left
Dez Bryant split right
Jason Witten on one side of the line
Martellous Bennett on the other
and Felix Jones in the back-field

If all 5 players could reach their potential what could a DC do? They could block everyone and spring Felix for a 70-yard TD has easily as they could carve up the secondary passing it.

Right now no one is losing sleep about Roy Williams. They’re yawning about covering last year’s version of Bennett. And Barber doesn’t strike fear into anyone anymore.

But if the lights come on and we get all the right players on the field. The greatest show on turf would have nothing on us.

This is an easy thought experiment. Just imagine the passing attack if you could replace Bennett with Gates. I doubt Bennett’s blocking forces a greater adjustment from the defense than Gates’ receiving.

i had no problem w/ the moves

until i saw McCann get released. i just don’t get how Jerry/whoever falls in love w/ these project players & decides to keep them on the 53 man roster when we have talented guys at positions were short at. if JWill wasn’t getting the job done & we needed to keep Leon Williams then cut JWill & find a new pet next year at ILB but don’t cut the guy thats proved to be better at his position.
after reading up on McCann & Wall, how on earth did we end up drafting Wall over McCann? nothing in the scouting report gives Wall the edge. it must have come down to special teams players & not talking returners bc McCann runs a 4.28. take Church for example, the guy is your average in the box SS, lacks coverage skills & runs a 4.6 which is not the ideal 3-4 SS but he hits a like a mack truck head on. now i don’t mean to offend Churches supporters bc were on the same team but his skillset isn’t on the defense its on special teams.

You can't just throw a player...

on the PUP list anytime you want. It doesn’t work that way:

http://www.examiner.com/houston-texans-in-houston/clarifying-nfl-rules-on-the-physically-unable-to-perform-pup-list

The Active PUP is for players that have some form of injury that will prevent them from starting training camp.

If placed on Active PUP, a player can rehab and participate in team meetings but cannot practice.

A player has to be placed on Active PUP before he begins training camp, so that’s why you’re seeing the stories popping up now.

A player on Active PUP can be removed from the list at any time during camp.

A player on Active PUP counts against the league mandated roster limit (currently 80).

And one of the most important rules, a player must be on Active PUP in order to be considered for Reserve PUP.

Young wouldn’t be eligible. He wasn’t hurt until the final pre-season game. IR would be the only option, then you lose him for the season.

Personally, I would’ve taken McCann over Leon Williams or even McCray. There’s a better chance that Leon would be still waiting if you needed to resign him later. McCray is ST’s only at this point. The chances of him making the 45-man on a weekly basis aren’t great.

The team gambled and lost.

i would've taken McCann

over JWilliams bc he’s not going to help this year & McCray is going to be the new ST ace replacing Watkins so thats not possible. also their talking about using McCray in the nickel/dime bc Lee is focusing on the base & it would be to much for him to learn both positions. from what i’m hearing JWill isn’t going to have a role on defense at all or they would’ve cut Leon. btw whats Leons role this season? does Lee backup Brooking & Leon backup James or whats going on w/ that? i read McCray, Hamlin & Brooking could all be canidates for the nickel/dime role but that would send Lee or Leon to Brookings spot?

Period. Wade has said he graded out best among the LB’s in the Miami game:

http://www.dallascowboys.com/news/news.cfm?id=D9D045BC-F16D-3DB9-961DEC394573697A

“We still have several different scenarios,” Phillips said. “Jason (Williams) and Danny (McCray) both played well there. Jason Williams actually had a really nice (game). He graded in the 90 percent range, which was probably the highest of our linebackers.”

Wade did say "probably the highest", not definitive

Also the 90% range could take into account the 3 plays you saw him botch.

I think the only way he’ll improve is by playing, so expect to watch him go through a learning curve on the job. But from what Wade said, he’s already improved from the HOF game to the MIA game.

Guards

I hope they make a move, at least at backup level and perhaps a more serious starter move as well.

I think the PS looks good right now. Trade Hurd and promote either at some point before the deadline.

LWilliams, Lissimore, McCray, Anderson, Kitna, Young, Costa could all be moved or added to the PS if allowed if better players can fill their or other spots. The starting olinemen are largely a money pit and aren’t going to get moved. Holland should go, he looks done. Barron has a few more weeks but if the trendline doesn’t point up soon he should go also.

i just hated to see McCann get nabbed off the waiver wire but we can draft a CB next year to start grooming for Newman down the road, or replace them incase of an injury. i like Scandrick but he just doesn’t seem to be the player he was the 1st year. he’s been burned a lot this preseason & give up some big plays last year, most of all he’s always pointing fingers even if its his fault. he might start somewhere else but he won’t be anything but nickelbacker here. thats just my opinion

That's incorrect.

Dallas claimed Scott Chandler (TE) and Cliff Lewis (OT) off of waivers from the Giants and Detroit:

http://cowboysblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2010/09/cowboys-set-practice-squad.html

They have also added tight end Scott Chandler, who was cut by the New York Giants , and offensive tackle Cliff Louis, who was cut by Detroit.

Louis, 6-8, 315, has spent time with Cleveland, Jacksonville, the Giants and Lions in addition to time in the UFL and CFL.

the guy i would’ve liked to drafted as a FS was M.Burnett, that kid is going to be great

Agreed

He looked darn good against the Colts in the 3rd Pre-season game.

we could've gotten Burnett

by moving up ahead of Green bay in the 3rd round w/ our 4th & 7th picks. i think Lissemore would’ve went undrafted bc of nobody knowing a lot about him coming out of william & mary. they could’ve taken Young w/ the 6th instead of the 7th. for some reason scouts weren’t high on Young, i guess it was his footwork but theirs always next years draft. we have some late round picks w/ Crayton & McQuistian to move up earlier in the draft.

I remember...

the Giants and at least one other team being talked about as having interest in Lissemore if he’d gone undrafted. There was a little discussion on it immediately after the draft. Quincyyyyy …err…Lissyyyyy could probably tell you more.LOL

They could’ve done a lot of things differently. But, they didn’t. What they did do was manage to keep all but one draftee on the 53-man. They also managed to keep 4 UDFA’s (Church, Costa, McCray and Gronkowski). Not too shabby for churning the bottom of the roster, picking up some good development talent and freeing up some salary to pay Austin, Sensi and several others that will be FA’s at the end of 2010.

I listened to an interview with AOA

He came across as very smart, and mature for his age, like Lee. This was while he was still not cleared to play, he would stand next to the coaches (I guess Campo or Maxie) and watch the other DB’s practice and imagine himself doing what they were (mental reps), and he also said he was getting in extra time watching film so he wouldn’t fall behind.
Left me feeling like the Cowboys made the right pick with AOA.

Thank you #22, for everything you did for the Cowboys. There will never be another one like you.

i'm still steaming about

my pet McCann, i got so mad reading the ravens blogs. i hope we play them in the superbowl & Dez blows McCann up.
they were talking like McCann was shutting down Austin, Dez, Roy all during TC, i was thinking to myself if he did all that then he wouldn’t have been cut. their was 1 comment that he could get cut in a few weeks when 1 of the CBs come back or maybe lowered to the PS but we could add him back to our roster if that happened, right?
their was also talk about Ken Hamlin getting released lol, their secondary is thin but some core players should be back soon so someones going to get the axe
anyone know if Gaither, their backup tackle is healthy or whats up w/ him bc he had some serious potential. i heard he had some mental issues but it could’ve been a rumor

I doubt the Ravens release McCann.

Not after some of the comments I’ve read attributed to their front office. But yeah, if they were to cut him to try to get him to their PS, we could try to grab him back…if the team felt the need. A lot could happen between now and whenever.

Ken Hamlin getting cut wouldn’t surprise me. They’re pretty spoiled by excellent Safety play with Reed and Landry.

Gaither was recovering from a back tear the last I heard. They’re hoping he can play in the opener at RT. If not, they’ve got someone I never heard of from the Packers to play.

Jets likely to cut a CB anyday....

they have 6 before revis signed on.

Could be worth researching.

Their #2's had been playing pretty poorly
