Marc Colombo, Kyle Kosier Miss Practice on Wednesday
From the mothership comes the disappointing news:
Starting right tackle Marc Colombo (knee) and starting left guard Kyle Kosier (knee) are not practicing with the team at TCU's indoor practice facility in Fort Worth, an alternate site due to heavy rain at Valley Ranch.
I was really hoping to see Colombo practice today because it's getting late in the week and it's looking more and more like he won't go. The news on Koiser was to be expected, so that's not much of a change.
Alex Barron and Montrae Holland, you guys better be ready to go.

I hope all those who said
“Don’t worry they’ll be back week 1” read this.
Semper Fi Do or Die
Projected 2010 Record: 12-4. You heard it here first
man this is bad news
not what i wanted to hear today
Teams have injuries every year
and the good ones are able to overcome them. Sometimes it’s a reserve who steps up, or other starters who pick up the slack, or smart coaching to gameplan properly.
Let’s hope the 2010 Dallas Cowboys are one of those good teams.
How many of us were nervous when Doug Free
was forced into the lineup last year? And that worked out pretty well.
They acted.....
terrible the whole way through that process as I recall. The team seems to think it’s a 5 year apprentice program or a mega-contract FA signing is the only way to start. Sure there were bad draft picks but other teams find people, put them in and they function. It’s the whole oline culture, like it was a GM plant where people wait 10 years for the easy holepunching press job that has an unofficial two hour goof off time per day.
One writer at DMN called them out to play or cut Free when they pondered endlessly at some point last year and started the fantasy of Davis at tackle. He was 100% correct.
Aside from the obvious talent issue you have to wonder if you are trying to break in why you would want to come to Dallas at oline? This culture is the exact opposite that the team has done a good job with on UDFA such as Austin or Romo.
If Costa really has it put him at guard but there is a chance that even the young backups aren’t up to league averages. Think future Proctor’s or McQuistan’s. I haven’t seen much from Holland and heard him whine about not being a starter before they signed him this year. I’m sure Phillips has him pegged which is why he is usually inactive. The area is crowded with politics like nothing else. All teams go through “how many time will my # be called?” on offense but this is crazy in how the oline gets managed. They don’t play the best players and they keep deadwood as a tradition.
I know it's a bit of a stretch
But I recall being anxious when Erik Williams suffered season-ending car injuries in midseason 1994. Fortunately the team had players like Larry Allen and Ron Stone to shuffle around and play.
Now, obviously Barron and Holland are not Larry Allen and maybe not even Ron Stone, but both were relatively high picks (1st round for Barron and 4th for Holland), so they do have some sort of pedigree and hopefully will provide solid but temporary depth.
Should we forfeit
C’mon guys let’s wait and see. We can do this. We are the Dallas Cowboys. The RHG will come through.

Too soon to say
I read this news as: they are both doubtful for this week and questionable for next week.

If Colombo doesn't practice Thurs then I'll know he's out
But this isn’t looking good.

Especially since Fridays are a walk-though
So he’s going to come back from any injury that sidelined him 4 weeks, have one day of practice with some form of pads on, and then perform lights-out in the opener?
I think most people would agree it would be a miracle to expect him to perforom to his pre-season level before the injury which, if you remember, was terrible!

You're right
But I’m still holding out hope he can somehow play, until tomorrow.

If the Redskins have any defense sense about them
They’re going to line up Haynesworth right on top of Holland and tell him:
“The Cowboys are putting their scrub backup guard on you. It’s opening day, it’s a night game, and it’s the Cowboys – this stage doesn’t get any bigger in DC. Now if you want to validate your contract, if you want to quash any trade rumors, if you want to get this entire coaching staff, this entire team, and this entire city back on your side, what you’re going to do is blow up that scrub and hit Romo every single down. You’re Albert Haynesworth, we didn’t trade for you to get stopped by a backup guard. Now go out there and make an ESPN highlight reel out of these guys”

Holland is a big guy
he doesn’t get bulldozed nearly as easily as Kosier. Where he is inferior to Kosier is his mobility, especially in pulling. So Fat Albert rushing the passer vs Holland is OK. Against Gurode, well who knows…
FREE THE OGLETREE!!!
Yeah, but I heard Holland got approval to wear Heelys during games.

They wouldn’t let him practice in them, so who knows how it will work out.

What? Gurode owns him, whipped his ass so bad that Fat Al lost it on the field and went nuts
Anytime he gets a chance, Gurode should tell Fat Albert that his kids sometimes ask him “Why did that man try to blind you daddy?”
That ought to screw with his head.

for sure. he looks like a tight end out there. I guess we can wait on bennets break out game for a while he may be abetter blocker than barron, crap.
Don't believe everything you think.
Your causes are cute!!!
Agreed
Barron looked really bad in the preseason, getting beat by 2nd teamers. At least Holland has played ok before and most of his problems were penalties. I’d prefer to have Brewster to Barron.

is it possible that even with cutting Carp the Rams got the better of the Barron trade?
"Talent is God-given; be humble. Fame is man-given; be grateful. Conceit is self-given; be careful." John Wooden
As much as it stinks its not like this can't be game-planned for.
Jason Garrett is the highest paid assistant and this is what he gets paid to fix. Whether it is running a lot of 2-TE sets (which is golden in my opinion anyway) or emphasizing more screens than normal, this can certainly be overcome with the skill position players we have. The other really important thing will be for our defense and ST to play well to ensure that we don’t get in any holes and have to play catch-up football and expose our offense line to blitzes without much help.
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.
More screens please
To Felix or Choice, a few good screens should slow down the OLB’s.
I want Romo to have some chances to go downfield to Austin or Dez. The SkIns backup FS will start the game, there should be some opportunities to get some big plays in the passing game, if Romo gets enough time in the pocket.
"I have a feeling that when the lights come on, he's going to respond." - Coach Wade Phillips on rookie WR Dez Bryant being ready for prime time.
Yeah this game is still winnable
This one is probably on the defense to win. The Skins receivers and backs are pretty bad. We should be able to hold them down. Biggest problem could be protection breakdowns causing a big fumble or INT. I’d play conservative and hope Austin/Dez/Felix can break a big one.

Let’s also not forget how well Dallas runs the WR screen.
And, even if Bryant is just mainly a decoy, his ability to get down the field may help free some things up.
I don't know if that WR screen will work with WAS
Their CB’s usually play up close to the line in man coverage, but if they start getting beaten deep by the DAL WR’s, maybe they will start giving some cushion.
Speaking of WR screens, the 2 games I watched them in pre-season, WAS ran those a lot of those. Whether they will use them in a real game, I don’t know.
"I have a feeling that when the lights come on, he's going to respond." - Coach Wade Phillips on rookie WR Dez Bryant being ready for prime time.
The problem will be
3rd and long situations (which Dallas gets into very often) and Romo will not have more than 3 seconds to get rid of the ball or get sacked. YAC will be very important for our WRs and TEs if they’re catching the ball short of the 1st-down marker. Quick slants to Austin out of the slot would be TOP on my game plan.
This is gonna have to be a game that Wade will have to win with the D
Blitz the house, make McNabb fumble or throw picks and we’ll get them.
All the offense has to do is score 2 TD and we’ll win (and somehow try to stay in the game for 6 or 7 plays before they punt or kick….cant gas the D before halftime).
Get use to it.....
the oline is falling apart for some time now. The math is against them on age, overweight and over rated as a starting point.
It’s tried and true reality of overvalued contracts, they can uplift an area for a time but they lead to ROI priority instead of logical turnover which is past due for much of the group. Adams should never been extended. How much dead money from that move?
Columbo was another mistake.
I’d rather see the rookies than Holland or Barron but the senority culture dominates. If they fail they should be cut right away. Bring in hungry guys who want to play instead of guys hanging on to their contracts trying to make it look respectable which is what I see.
It’s make believe if fans think the area shouldn’t be rebuilt or it can wait to the next draft. It should be open season and everyone should be real worried about their jobs. Instead the message is how “not worried” they are, the wrong message at many levels.
And yet as horrible as the OL is
Dallas finished 2009: 2nd in the NFL in Total yards/Game, and 1st in the NFL in Avg gain/play
Just think what they could do with hungry guys playing for league minimum.
"I have a feeling that when the lights come on, he's going to respond." - Coach Wade Phillips on rookie WR Dez Bryant being ready for prime time.
Free is the best lineman at present......
What’s his comp relative to Columbo? 1/18th?
You share the culture, overpriced 10-6 is great gone in the first few playoff rounds. Wait-till-next-year!
Clearly they faded and frankly fell apart in MIn. What does the trendline in big games tell you?
How frightening is that?
On any other team, a new left tackle that has never started a game at that position would be the biggest red flag on the field on opening day.
Our O-line is such a mess, that’s actually the least of our concerns.
by Blue Eyed Devil on Sep 8, 2010 6:24 PM CDT up reply actions
Free will be getting paid soon
I don’t see your argument as a good one. When OL men play well (or any position for that matter) they will get commensurate pay, or go to a team willing to pay. Unless you have a genius scouting department with great luck who can keep a fresh stream of these “hungry young OL men” in the pipeline, you will have to pay good players to retain them. If you want to spend all the top draft picks on OL, you miss out on players like Spencer, Jenkins, Felix, and Dez.
I agree with you on one point, and that was giving Flo the new contract when he was 33 or 34, and already showing cracks (not the plumbers kind) wasn’t a smart move, but they didn’t have a suitable backup at that point. Gurode is paid appropriately, IMO. I’m sure several people don’t agree with that, but I don’t see him as the problem. Colombo’s contract didn’t seem excessive at the time, but in hindsight maybe his injury history should have been a bigger red flag, but at the time he was playing very well. And finally Kosier was a cheap and dependable FA pick up, whereas, Bigg has been an expensive FA pickup who’s been inconsistent, sometimes dominating, sometimes useless. So that’s one hit and arguably one miss.
And they are playing the best guys at each position regardless of pay. Bright, Brewster, Young, and Costa couldn’t supplant any of he starters. Maybe if Brewster was given a shot at Guard, before he was moved to swing tackle, you might have had a case for one guy, if he had played very well inside.
Rebuilding the line. Flo was the first to be replaced by Free, and LT is the most important. So, now they have Costa maybe at center, Young at RT, Brewster at wherever (G/T), and Bright at Guard.
If people are right about Sam Young (I don’t agree) then he’s going to be the next RT. It’s tough to go in and blow up the line in the middle of a SB contending window of opportunity. You need to do it carefully, or you could really muck it up.
"I have a feeling that when the lights come on, he's going to respond." - Coach Wade Phillips on rookie WR Dez Bryant being ready for prime time.
LOL squared
that sky is falling belief is just wrong; Colombo has been very good and we got him free; Colombo has been a stalwart enforcer; he is always there protecting and picking up his runners and WRs. Bigg and Kosier and Gurode have not been bad; Dallas had a kick ass running game for the most part when the backs have been healthy. I remain confident.
The panic does seem to be setting in
It’s funny, about 93% of the people who voted in the poll I ran as a fanpost think the team will win at least 10 games. The fan base is teetering between thinking we are in the super bowl and thinking we are going to fall apart.
I will be so glad to see the team playing a meaningful game so we have something realistic to make out judgements on.
If at first you don't succeed - blame someone else.
In this league of parity
The line between superbowl champion and run-of-the-mill is that close.
Last year the Saints were 8-8
And the 2008 season superbowl winning Steelers went 8-8 past year.
This team is wholely capable of anything from 8-8 too Lombardi winners.

Your causes are cute!!!
Name some good moves the Cowboys should have made...
Keep in mind that the Cowboys have made it clear by their recent actions/errors that they will not mortgage their future for a all or nothing season, and would prefer to stay away from pricey veterans.
Am I nervous about our line? Hell yes! But I like how we have been building our team the past 4-5 years and I want it to continue. We seem to draft well and I would prefer to have that continue as opposed to trading away multiple picks for a short term fix.
I agree about high cost....
moves but the real issue is not cutting losses with existing declining players. I don’t fault trying a Barron but is this going to be a two year evaluation? A soap opera?
As for the bench; Proctor, McQuistan, Holland why were/are they here when there isn’t a prayer they are going to make it as starters? The whole business of recruiting “backups” should end. I don’t care if there are fights in the locker room you want 8-9 guys who think they should start. I hope the younger players don’t get this “I’m a backup” infection.
I like the way they are building almost every other area, there is something very different about how the olinemen are managed. I think it was the big contracts that made it less dynamic and more obvious. Davis, Adams, Columbo all have had different poor outcomes at some point. Gurode is slipping but I give him a chance to be o.k. but past peak for sure. Kosier at least is an overacheiver but he is an average player.
They clearly missed a pick last year trading down to J.Williams.
If you mean Unger
He has not been showing signs of being the missing piece of our OL. SEA had a bad OL in 2009 with Unger playing RG and C, and brought in zone blocking expert line coach Alex Gibbs to fix it, but he suddenly quit a few days ago.
Unger got a chance to start at center because the original center Spencer was hurt. Now Spencer is healthy, and they put him back at center because he’s better than Unger, and they moved Unger back to RG. I don’t know that Dallas missed out on a future star center, but it doesn’t sound like it so far.
"I have a feeling that when the lights come on, he's going to respond." - Coach Wade Phillips on rookie WR Dez Bryant being ready for prime time.
We traded down because Unger got picked and there weren't any "value" picks on our board.
We’ve been building a strong roster because we have been going after value and not reaching for need. Scandrick, Choice, and Sean Lee are just a few picks we took because of value not need. Our Scouting department has been doing a very good job, and more importantly, Jerry is actually listening instead of making Hail Mary picks (i.e. Quincy Carter).
There weren’t good value picks for OL where we were picking (refer to the leaked draft board). Michael Iupati was a lineman the Cowboys would have traded up for (maybe even above Dez), but SF picked him early. Vladimir Ducasse was a hyped up lineman that some draftniks felt the Cowboys should pick up in the 1st of 2nd round. The Jets took him in the 2nd, and he’s sucked.
Give our Scouts a chance because they have been right more than wrong. Free has been a pleasant surprise. Costa looks like he will be a good pickup. Brewster looked terrible in camp, but played ok in the preseason games….with some experience he might be good. Sam Young is not flashy but he may turn into a solid replacement for Columbo in a year or two. Travis Bright is still raw but he was pushing guys around in games. Look at these guys…they are all hard working and low maintenance players. I may have just named off our future OLine.

And that's just the busts, let's look at boneheaded decisions
In 2009 they traded down on their 2nd round pick.
Between that 2nd rounder we traded out of and the 3rd rounder we finally picked at, four offensive linemen were picked.
Sebastian Volmer
Willliam Beaty
Phil Loadholt
Andre Levitre
Guess what all four of those players have in common? They’re starters in the NFL.
Who did we draft? Robert Brewster, who is not a starter and is stuck at 4th on our depth chart.
by Blue Eyed Devil on Sep 8, 2010 9:43 PM CDT up reply actions
Ok...you named some good players.
Based on the trade we netted Robert Brewster & Victor Butler for Andy Levitre. In a couple of years, you may be saying we made a great decision.
Not exactly bonehead.
Blue Eyed Devil I don’t disagree with your argument that we can be better at picking OL, but I wish you would choose you words more carefully. I disagree with the veracity of your claims. All teams make good picks and bad picks. The better teams pick better, and looking at our roster, we look like one of the better teams.
Doesn't seem "drastic" to me...need to be better, sure...not "drastic"
Higher Round (1 Bust)
James Marten – 2007 – 3rd (Active)
Jacob Rogers – 2004 – 2nd (Bust)
Al Johnson – 2003 – 2nd (Played 6 years started 45 games)
Stephen Peterman – 2004 – 3rd round (Active)
- Marten & Johnson didn’t leave the team because they were busts. Peterman was an injury bust.
Lower Round (2 Busts)
Pat McQuistan – 2006 – 7th (Active)
E. J. Whitley – 2006 – 6th (Bust)
Rob Petitti – 2005 – 6th (Played 4 Years started 17 games)
Justin Bates – 2003 – 7th (Bust)
- 2 Busts with bottom of the draft picks.
Again…
Free has been a pleasant surprise. Costa looks like he will be a good pickup. Brewster looked terrible in camp, but played ok in the preseason games….with some experience he might be good. Sam Young is not flashy but he may turn into a solid replacement for Columbo in a year or two. Travis Bright is still raw but he was pushing guys around in games. Look at these guys…they are all hard working and low maintenance players. I may have just named off our future OLine.
Our scouts aren’t useless.
When good front offices go bad
I think it’s amazing that 4 UDFAs and a supplemental draft pick made a 53 roster already considered stacked with the most talent in the NFL. I’m the first to sing the scouts’ praises about such great successes.
But just as great receivers have some routes they run better than others, there are positions the Cowboys are much better at aquiring than others.
It seems like the team has little understanding of how to draft offensive linemen. The scouting has not been there and the prioritization has been even wose. Good scouting would have given us Loadholt in 2009. Higher prioritization could have given us a 2nd round center and 3rd round guard out of the draft this year or some of the big name free agents like Jammal Brown.
This front office needs to change its methods as it pertains to the offensive line starting this off season, what they’ve been doing isn’t working.
by Blue Eyed Devil on Sep 9, 2010 9:12 AM CDT up reply actions
I Agree.....
But the reason the draft is light is due to the big FA commitments and extentions.
They had committed to Adams last year for example, they weren’t going to hold top pick on the bench. It’s the top heavy planning that hurts the area.
Who'se Fault is that?
Again, the front office and Jerry Jones. These are all the same people making the personel decisions.

I did. They need to move on mankins regardless of the price.
No one in the first round next year will have the impact he can and we may be able to swing him for a second anyway. I know he needs a contract but he’s young good and has never missed a game. Behind our starters we have nothing.

Bye Tony, MBIII and Felix
It’s been great having you on the team for the last few years. Gonna miss you.
FREE THE OGLETREE!!!
We're about to find out if Jerry Jones' aproach to the O-line this offseason was right
They didn’t make any big moves in the draft, free agency, or going after other teams’ disgruntled holdouts.
Instead, they decided to keep Holland to a 2-year $4 million contract with $2.5 million more in incentives. They were so sure about Holland they signed him to a deal the size of the one they cut Crayton for. Then we went out and got Barron as our solution at tackle.
It’s been debated back and forth. But the debate ends Monday. The plan goes to the test and we’re going to see if it was the right one or not.
This offseason?
Try the last several years. The Cowboys haven’t really invested in a high pick lineman in ages.
Is it NFL time yet?
Columbo gets 9 million + this year.....
What does that tell you about misplaced expectations?
In any business there is a budget. 2 million for Holland? Does that make sense? Was there a weight penalty added to that contract?
Colombo's contract details per Rotoworld
12/8/2008: Signed a four-year, $22 million contract extension through 2012. The deal includes $8 million guaranteed. Another $3.5 million is available through playing-time incentives. 2010: $2.14 million, 2011: $1.9 million, 2012: $2.7 million, 2013: $4 million (Voidable Years>>>), 2014: $4.8 million, 2015: $5.6 million, 2016: Free Agent
$2.14 mil in 2010 base, plus whatever incentives he could get, (assuming things like starting every game, making ProBowl, playing in post-season, etc. but who knows)
So really it’s not a big contract, 8 mil guaranteed over 4 seasons, after 2012 it voidable.
"I have a feeling that when the lights come on, he's going to respond." - Coach Wade Phillips on rookie WR Dez Bryant being ready for prime time.
Colombo's Contract is Fine
It’s Gurode and Leonard Davis that will make $6 million each next year. They’re the ones that have to go.
Think about the quality of free agents you can pick up with $12 million to throw around.
by Blue Eyed Devil on Sep 8, 2010 7:23 PM CDT up reply actions
I expect....
6 line infractions, 3 of which will be holds.
If they gain 125 on the ground I’ll be amazed.
4+ sacks of Romo
They still might win.
What gets me is why every move in the starting oline must be a “mega” move yet the talent level is very ordinary. The second guessing on Free last year etc. They make it much harder and more expensive than it needs to be. Even if they fail this week it will be the reaction that will be more upsetting, are they going to make moves and react? No, they will pray for the starters to return and status quo on personnel will be maintained. They’ll make excuses when the just flat out get beat by more physical play.
Guys got by waivers, there are PS players about. Time for more turnover and let the young players play if what expect to have happen happens Sunday.
Good Point
. . . the proof is about to be in the pudding. The Fat Lady is about to sing on this debate . . . either Jerry’s bet pays off or the Cowboys will be holding a bag of rotten eggs. I think Jerry wins this debate.
We'll know at about 10:30 pm or so Sunday.
I understand concern and uncertainty, but the sackcloth and ashes seem a tad premature.
And I wonder just how the line can get fixed instantly, which seems to be the expectation here. With two rookies on the line, you can’t say they are not bringing some youth in. I guess I just don’t know the directions to Linemen R Us to pick up all those incredibly talented all pro offensive linemen sitting idle out there.
The Cowboys may have a rough year, but just how easy is it to get ALL the pieces for a championship contenter in place at once? I am not saying to blindly trust the coaches – after all, where is the fun in that – but at least see how the game goes on Sunday before you write off the season.
If at first you don't succeed - blame someone else.
