Vikings @ Saints Open Thread

Here we go, another NFL season is starting! The 2010 season gets underway with a couple of NFC powerhouses, the Vikings and the Saints. It's not quite the excitement of a Cowboys game, but at least it means the NFL is playing real games again.

This is an open thread for game chat.

After a half...

I have to say I’m not really impressed with either team…

by LDVFootball on Sep 9, 2010 8:58 PM CDT reply actions

After that first series,

On offense, Saints have had trouble running and throwing deep. On Defense, they have been unable to stop the run and covering the tight end with LB’s.

On Defense, Vikings CB’s were exposed in the first series. In subsequent series, it seems they are countering by dropping their safeties deep. On Offense, it’s been a lot of AP, but that hasn’t been enough on most series. Only one completion to the WR’s. Two passes to Shiancoe been the slight difference so far.

The Saints are playing way too cute.

The big dumb stinky linemen are probably even more amped up than everybody else so of course if you call all those pass plays they’re going to screw up.

by MadMick on Sep 9, 2010 9:10 PM CDT reply actions

Say what you want.

They’ve consistently spent 1st and 2nd-rounders on their secondary; Harper, Porter, Jenkins and Robinson. There was nothing lucky about Porter’s picks in the postseason. Now I don’t think the Saints will get as many turnovers as they did last season but it’s clear from them carpet bombing the secondary in the draft they have a defensive philosophy in place. Aim to be a team that wins shootouts by throwing every down on offense and then having enough ballhawks in the secondary to make opponents pay for having to play catch-up. They got a ring last year out of it. Let’s see where the Cowboys strategy of drafting back-up linebackers and tight ends every year gets them.

How does everyone cheat? Why are you so down on it? Without CFB you would have no NFL. Not only did it begin popularity in football but it provides all those football players that are so great in the NFL. True no College Football team could beat a bad NFL team, but you wouldn’t have an NFL team if you had not CFB.

Makes me feel love for Buehler

Yeah, I know, he hasn’t kicked in a real game, but I have a very good feeling about him right now.

If at first you don't succeed - blame someone else.

That game was a real eyesore.

Besides Visante Shiancoe who the hell can Favre even rely on? Peterson better be ready for 30 carries a game.

The weirdest part was the final score.

The Vikings were so sloppy that it felt like the score should be 34-10 or something.

Terry Bradshaw made a living throwing deep balls to Swann and Stallworth in bad weather...

Because the WR knows where he is going, while the DB is tentative on wet grass.

Did everyone else know it was over when the Vikings punted?

It made no sense to punt in that situation. Even if you don’t make it and the Saints get a FG, you needed a TD anyway. All they did was allow them more field with which to run out the clock. That’s just bad coaching.

One thing I find odd is how Favre gets killed for that INT he threw, but no one comments that they got a delay of game penalty coming out of a timeout right before that play, which forced them into the passing situation to begin with. Otherwise a simple run up the gut gives them a long but makeable FG attempt. After that penalty, they needed at least 5 more yards. Delay of Game after a timeout. That’s once again horrendous coaching/clock management. No wonder Favre thinks the guy doesn’t know what he’s doing.

It was 4th and 11

with nearly 6 minutes to play. He thought they could get the ball back. An incomplete pass would have given the Saints the ball near mid-field, and that would have sealed the game. It was the right call to punt in my opinion, but the defense did nothing to stop NOR from getting 3 more first downs and running out all of the clock.

The Cowboys ran a neat 75% overall from heavy formations. Defensive coordinators knew what was coming -- but it didn't matter. - Rafael Vela

Did you really think they would get the ball back?

New Orleans was running the ball pretty effectively in the second half, and you give them the ability to stretch your defense more by giving them more field to work with. If your plan is to play some D, then why not play it at midfield? No matter where you gave them the ball, a couple of first downs ends the game.

I don’t see how getting the ball at their 44 seals the game any less than getting it at their 12. At that point, the Vikings’ enemy was time, not field position. As long as you hold them to a FG, you’re still in the game and you get the ball back. If you let them get a couple first downs, from any spot on the field, the game is over.

Did I think they would get the ball back?

Yes.

Before that 4th down punt, the Saints had 10 possessions on offense. Even if you omit the possession right before the half, which lasted only :34 seconds, of the remaining 9 possessions 4 of them were 3 plays and punt. So it is accurate to say that nearly half of the Saints offensive possessions ended without them gaining even one first down.

The punt pinned NOR back to the 12 yard line. If the Vikes hold them without a first down, (which they had already done FOUR TIMES), then they get the ball back near their own 40 or 45 with over 3 minutes of game time left.

Personally, I think the punt was the right call. Everyone has their own opinion, but if I had been the coach, then yes, I would have called for the punt.
