Vikings @ Saints Open Thread
Here we go, another NFL season is starting! The 2010 season gets underway with a couple of NFC powerhouses, the Vikings and the Saints. It's not quite the excitement of a Cowboys game, but at least it means the NFL is playing real games again.
This is an open thread for game chat.

Peterson isn't gonna be able to do this all game.
I wonder how much we’ll get to see Mr. Stanford(Gerhardt) tonight.

There's Albert Young...
He’s no Chester Taylor…
This is why teams can't score
by just running the ball
If that's a false start, every QB in the league is in trouble.

My mother MADE me watch a Cowboys game when I was 8. Now 20 years, 300 taped games, 1 tattoo and 1 son named Dallas later, she says I'm obsessed. Sometimes you just can't please your parents.
yea i've never seen that called before
I don’t think qbs should be able to do that though, so it seems reasonable. But everyone does it.
And there goes a screen pass to Peterson

Poor technique by Berrian

Oh, good grief Brett!

Do you think the Saints are aiming for Harvin's head much?!
Should’ve been a flag there.

Favre picked off
Now we can say the season has officially begun.

Can you imagine how pissed must the vikings be about berrian
considering that we hate the RW deal….
They gave him a lot of money...
Did they give up any picks?
Seeing him throw and INT
makes me like him a little more. Plus I have NO defense in my fantasy league.

Memo to Saints...
Double 81, they have no other receivers…
After a half...
I have to say I’m not really impressed with either team…
After that first series,
On offense, Saints have had trouble running and throwing deep. On Defense, they have been unable to stop the run and covering the tight end with LB’s.
On Defense, Vikings CB’s were exposed in the first series. In subsequent series, it seems they are countering by dropping their safeties deep. On Offense, it’s been a lot of AP, but that hasn’t been enough on most series. Only one completion to the WR’s. Two passes to Shiancoe been the slight difference so far.
How am I supposed to support the Saints if
they Start Reggie Bush. I HATE THAT GUY

The Saints are playing way too cute.
The big dumb stinky linemen are probably even more amped up than everybody else so of course if you call all those pass plays they’re going to screw up.
I said it before Saints D just got lucky last year.. see Meachum INT/strip TD against WAS
Really?! Really?!
Say what you want.
They’ve consistently spent 1st and 2nd-rounders on their secondary; Harper, Porter, Jenkins and Robinson. There was nothing lucky about Porter’s picks in the postseason. Now I don’t think the Saints will get as many turnovers as they did last season but it’s clear from them carpet bombing the secondary in the draft they have a defensive philosophy in place. Aim to be a team that wins shootouts by throwing every down on offense and then having enough ballhawks in the secondary to make opponents pay for having to play catch-up. They got a ring last year out of it. Let’s see where the Cowboys strategy of drafting back-up linebackers and tight ends every year gets them.
See what happen's when Andy Reid isn't in his ear,
Childress is clueless.
…and yes I do believe Andy helped out after his season was over.
hahaah brees got em jumpin with that move with his hands ,combined with his voice lol

The pump fake to a draw
Looks like its going to become a staple for many teams. Vikes and Saints have both run it.
Cowboy football!
Did that play fake originate with the Cowboys...
I thought JG copied that…
Yea,from Norv
Like I said before if you spread them out, force LBs+DL to chase, second half the tree’s are winded. This is textbook Payton, the Barbarian is running amok about now,I remember the days.
Agreed
Nothing is new under the sun. JG just made in en vogue, and it looks like it’s getting in a few more teams playbooks.

Its funny. Even after Favre's mistakes and lack of WR's the Vikings are somehow still in this game.
I love how everyone predicted a Saint blowout. Boy I cannot wait for Thanksgiving. I am going to name my turkey Drew Brees

I'm not. Considering Dallas has 3 CB and NO is using 4 or 5 WR pretty regularly
I’m a little worried.

you dont think our safties cant cover a number 4 and 5 wr?
that’s not the relevant question. The relevant question is do think Dallas’s safties can cover NO 4th WR, who is either Lance Moore or Robert Meachem.
And no, I’m not confident in that matchup.

I always get into that argument with a pal who is huge into NCAA everything
Take worse team in NFL… Rams? and best in College Alabama? I say worse NFL wins everytime no doubt yet he is convinced the other way. I just shun him away
Really?! Really?!
Well considering Ohio State won a championship in 2002 more recently than the Cowboys
How does everyone cheat? Why are you so down on it? Without CFB you would have no NFL. Not only did it begin popularity in football but it provides all those football players that are so great in the NFL. True no College Football team could beat a bad NFL team, but you wouldn’t have an NFL team if you had not CFB.

I am pretty sure Crayton is a 3rd to 4th string receiver who fills in ok but has no speed and no big play ability. And he holds the ball like a jerk

Crayton = Camarillo
his value to us is far greater than his value to other teams.

Thank you, someone with some sense. His value to us was also lame all things considered, we won 1 playoff game and he cost us a great shot at a title with that drop vs Giants

We'll see how the season goes
but favre doesn’t look like the same player to me. It may just be that its going to take him some time to get into game shape.
huh?
this is still a really good team. They’re hurt at wr and Favre doesn’t look good, but their D, AP and their oline will get them enough points where Favre doesn’t need to do much for them to get to 9+ wins
they're really hurting at WR.....
Berrian sucks (he’s the minny version of RW), Camarillo might be their best option but doesnt have the timing with favre….Parcy aint nothing if he has to carry the load.
But..
with that running game and defense, you dont need all star receivers.

I have this feeling that McNabb is
going to throw more than one interception…
i dont know about that
that would require him not throwing it directly into the dirt at his receivers’ feet
Under Shanahan, his technique has improved...
He is now throwing the ball high enough to complete interceptions… LOL.
hmmm.....lets what we can do with that Oline....
the way I see it, if they blitz consistently and we cant get first downs, our D will be gassed before the half and they’ll beat us in the 2nd half….Imscared of that game…they have a ood D and our line sucks.
they have a good D and our oline sucks
what team? Cowboys or Redskins both can say that.
Ware vs a Rookie.. ill take that all day and twice on SNF
Really?! Really?!
They have some good players on D...
I’m not sure they have a great Defense. Plus, we’ve got plays to beat the blitz… So, let them…
didnt look like had anything to beat the blitz against the vikings.....
If Free, Holland and Barron can do a better job against the blitz than flow, colombo and kozier then those injuries might be a blessing……but Holland looked horrible during preseason…..
Better than we think
They added jamaal brown, they have dockery, rabach and rookie williams.. There O line is ok, but no receivers and hopefully an inaccurate mcnabb, but there defense is still strong. They played us tough last year in dallas and orakpo and carter had 11 sacks each

Terry Bradshaw made a living throwing deep balls to Swann and Stallworth in bad weather...
Because the WR knows where he is going, while the DB is tentative on wet grass.
Did everyone else know it was over when the Vikings punted?
It made no sense to punt in that situation. Even if you don’t make it and the Saints get a FG, you needed a TD anyway. All they did was allow them more field with which to run out the clock. That’s just bad coaching.
One thing I find odd is how Favre gets killed for that INT he threw, but no one comments that they got a delay of game penalty coming out of a timeout right before that play, which forced them into the passing situation to begin with. Otherwise a simple run up the gut gives them a long but makeable FG attempt. After that penalty, they needed at least 5 more yards. Delay of Game after a timeout. That’s once again horrendous coaching/clock management. No wonder Favre thinks the guy doesn’t know what he’s doing.
by Baked Potato Soup on Sep 10, 2010 1:14 AM CDT reply actions
It was 4th and 11
with nearly 6 minutes to play. He thought they could get the ball back. An incomplete pass would have given the Saints the ball near mid-field, and that would have sealed the game. It was the right call to punt in my opinion, but the defense did nothing to stop NOR from getting 3 more first downs and running out all of the clock.
The Cowboys ran a neat 75% overall from heavy formations. Defensive coordinators knew what was coming -- but it didn't matter. - Rafael Vela
Did you really think they would get the ball back?
New Orleans was running the ball pretty effectively in the second half, and you give them the ability to stretch your defense more by giving them more field to work with. If your plan is to play some D, then why not play it at midfield? No matter where you gave them the ball, a couple of first downs ends the game.
I don’t see how getting the ball at their 44 seals the game any less than getting it at their 12. At that point, the Vikings’ enemy was time, not field position. As long as you hold them to a FG, you’re still in the game and you get the ball back. If you let them get a couple first downs, from any spot on the field, the game is over.
by Baked Potato Soup on Sep 10, 2010 8:55 AM CDT up reply actions
Did I think they would get the ball back?
Yes.
Before that 4th down punt, the Saints had 10 possessions on offense. Even if you omit the possession right before the half, which lasted only :34 seconds, of the remaining 9 possessions 4 of them were 3 plays and punt. So it is accurate to say that nearly half of the Saints offensive possessions ended without them gaining even one first down.
The punt pinned NOR back to the 12 yard line. If the Vikes hold them without a first down, (which they had already done FOUR TIMES), then they get the ball back near their own 40 or 45 with over 3 minutes of game time left.
Personally, I think the punt was the right call. Everyone has their own opinion, but if I had been the coach, then yes, I would have called for the punt.
