Crack Hits:Freebased Ideas Episode 4:The Controversy Edition

Crack Hits is back, welcome all returning readers and to our new readers. I want to start off this week's edition with a message to you, the reader. Crack Hits in no way promotes drugs, or drug behavior. Crack Hits is the title I have chosen and is meant to be a play on words, it is not promoting drug use. Freebased Ideas, is also included because the idea's are free in form, and was actually suggested by the BTB community. If you find this too offensive, that's fine we understand, but the door is the page back button or the big X on your Internet browser. If you can find it in your hearts to look past a innocent title and are ready to read some very knowledgeable football information that focuses around our beloved Dallas Cowboys, then please read on. I didn't mean to offend anyone and I want everyone that logs onto the BTB website to read my fanpost, I love being liked. So lets move on folks, in this edition we will talk about my favorite time of the year the draft, what Michael Irvin has to say about our new head coach, draft prospects, the assistant coaching search and some general idea's about the Cowboys.

Star-divide

I had some controversey for my recent post, Back To Basics:The Von Miller edition. Let me start with that I am in no way advocating ignoring the OL and S needs of the Dallas Cowboys, but what I love about Miller is he is a top 10 draft pick IMO. Pass rush is something we clearly lacked this year, and I believe its a big reason we lost games and why our defense continued to leak all season long. Now what I see happening is Jerry goes out and gets 2 OL that come in and become instant starters at RG and RT. I see us maybe going after a big name Safety, so if we do that it gives us some serious leeway in the upcoming draft. I drool over the propsects of seeing DeMarcus Wareand Von Miller "Time". Maybe I should of been more clear about that, I just wanted you to hear my opinion on why we could afford to take a premier pass rusher 9th overall. Dallas has a strong history of solving OL needs through free agency and recent players Leonard Davis, Kyle Kosier, Marc Columbo, all 3 starting OL were brought in via free agency and I see no reason especially in a deep OL market not to continue this trend.

Safety now that's a little more tricky actually. A few names I would look at are Dashon Goldson, Quinton Mikell, Atari Bigby, Donte WhitnerMichael Huff, Roman Harper, and Eric Weddle. Not the sexy names all of you have been accustomed to, but like Deion said, Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu don't grow on trees. I think Huff will be a idea because of him being from Texas, seems we are always a little more interested in the hometown guy. Im not saying Huff is elite, but he is serviceable and solid, something we need. Roman Harper got absolutely smoked in the game vs the Seahawks, but he is still a major upgrade, a leader, and a guy who is activley involved with the community. But if I had to choose I would take Eric Weddle from San Diego, he is a player that just always makes the right play and is in the right place. He isn't the flashiest player but he just makes plays, I think Eric Weddle would be a very subtle move that could actually have some serious impact. Donte Whitner is another safety I value highly for his leadership qualities and athletic ability, I would definitely take a strong look at Whitner. Dashawn Goldson is a safety for the 49ers I have liked for a while, still young and has the ball skills that we need. I wonder if the Niners actually let him walk, but you never know.

Now a player I just want to bring up is Eric Wright from the Cleveland Browns. Wright was a 2nd round pick, the 53rd overall selection in the 2007 NFL Draft. I remember there was some talk the Cowboys were interested in Wright that April of 2007. Now what is funny is the draft pick used to take him was actually our draft pick that we traded to the Browns when they traded back into the 1st round, taking our 1st round pick to select Brady Quinn. Wright lost his starting job this year and nettted only 1 interception, but had 4 in 2009 and 3 in 2008. Wright is known for his cover skills and most likely will not be returning to Cleveland for a variety of reasons, and I think he is a player we should take a look at. He had a similar season to Mike Jenkins, where in 2009 he was the Browns best corner, who could be left alone on an island and trusted to make the play. Now we all would love to get Nnamdi Asomugha from the Raiders, but we gotta be realistic here. I don't even know if we could afford Nnamdi, but as much as I would love to get him I start to think about the New England Patriots. The Patriots make it work with a variety of players, instead of banking on the one big player who cost you your whole free agency. Nnamdi is basically going to want DeMarcus Ware type money, and if I get Nnamdi heck I would be thrilled, but I wouldn't lose sleep over not getting him. Because we took a chance on a Cleveland Brown castoff a few years ago in Anthony Henry, and was a really good signing for us. I think Eric Wright is a starting cornerback in the NFL, if given the right situation like here in Dallas, I think he would have a bounceback Pro Bowl type year. For the record I am not saying Eric Wright is better than Nnamdi Ashomugha, I just think Wright might be a nice signing for the Cowboys.

One more mid level signing I think might make sense for us is Tavares Gooden from the Ravens. A 3rd round pick, 71st overall in the 2008 NFL Draft, Gooden is from the U, for those not familiar with the "U" it stands for the University of Miami. At 6'1 242 he fits the ILB mold we have for the 3-4 ILB that we like to use. He has the athletic ability and speed to be a starting LB for us. Now we simply don't have the ILB depth we need, especially going into a offseason where we released Jason Williams, we got Keith Brooking either retiring or not being retained, and no other ILB depth. Sean Lee is our starting ILB next year with Bradie James, thats a fact. Sean Lee is a stud, I have no issue there, but we have no ILB behind Lee or James, and we need to start thinking about the future, especially the future of who we pair with Sean Lee. Most likely we can solve that in the draft, there a bunch of quality ILB this year, but Gooden can give us depth at a modest price and with the upside of becoming a starter. Gooden never really became a starting player for the Ravens, he got the occasional spot start, but is primarily used on ST's, the Nickel, and reserve role. I think Gooden is good enough to start in the NFL, I have seen him have some dominate games for the Ravens, but what I like about Gooden is he is fast and can rush the passer. He is a versatile player you can use in Nickel, put on the outside to pass rush, and he can start and be productive for you. Would be a modest signing at around 400,000 dollars if you ask me.

The search for the filling of the staff has begun, and we have interviewed a few candidates. One guy I want to bring up is Vic Fangio who has coached the 3-4 in Houston under Dom Capers, and in Baltimore, one of my favorite defenses ever. He spent 4 years with Dom Capers in Houston, and as most of you know I love Dom Capers. Fangio was the Stanford DC and is rumored to head to the 49ers with John Harbaugh. Now I won't go into too much detail about one guy because everything is still undecided and there are more interviews to be scheduled, but I just wanted to say why I am a fan of Vic Fangio, he is a fan of the zone blitz scheme. I feel being creative with our blitzes is something Wade Phillips either just never understood, or simply didn't care. I do not know which one it was, or if he was just plain too dumb to run a different look of a scheme. Maybe Wade was stuborn as a horse, we will never know. This system also shouldn't be too hard to implement, we run a 3-4 defense already, its just a change of philosophy that is going to be changed. In a zone blitzing scheme you attack the quarterback, but you attack him from different angles and different blitzes. I read today in DMN that Vic Fangio isn't a risk taker, he called himself a " educated gambler". I loved that he described himself that way actually, I want a guy who is going to take chances, but at the right costs. I know we can't get Dom Capers but Im sure Garrett called Capers and asked who would be a good candidate for the job, and IMO Capers suggest Vic Fangio.

I actually support the idea of Greg Manusky from the 49ers as well, because if Harbuagh indeed hires Fangio, Manusky who is the 49ers DC would be out of a job. The Cowboys like Manusky and will interview Manusky tomorrow as reported by the media. He is a part of the Wade Phillips coaching style of the 3-4, where they coached together in San Diego. It kinda bothers me thinking that but Manusky was a pretty good DC in San Francisco and was a little more creative IMO. Greg Manusky and Todd Bowles might not be sexy names, but they would be really good choices for us.

Bobby Williams is another interesting guy, he is the tight ends coach for Alabama and is from the Saban tree. Im not a huge Nick Saban fan but I do like him. Bobby Williams is rumored to be interviewing for the WR job, since Ray Sherman is going to be moving on. He coached the WR's at LSU back in 2004 and also was head coach for Michigan State, so has some experience. Both have coached in Miami when Garrett was the QB's coach and Williams was the RB's coach, so that tells me Garrett is definitely having major input on his staff, and that is something we should all be thankful for.

I read today also on DMN that Michael Irvin is a big supporter of Jason Garrett, and to me that speaks volumes because Irvin knows his stuff, especially when it comes to football. Go over to DMN and check it out, but basically he says if the players and the Cowboys listen to Garrett, he will lead us to a Super Bowl. He goes on to say that Garrett is a hard worker, he works so hard and because of his work ethic and intelligence he is a reason why the Cowboys star will shine bright again. Reading Michael Irvin, one of the best football players of my time speak about Jason Garrett that highly is remarkable. Irvin also goes to tell a story about how Garrett would stay late with him after every practice and let Irvin run a additional 75 routes, just to be better and on top of his game. A backup QB doesn't have to do this, that shows me that Garrett has a great work ethic, and will work hard to achieve success, especially not for himself but another player.

Not gonna get into too much draft talk this week, gonna wait until the underclassman declare for the NFL Draft, which I believe they have until the 15th to do so. But once that day comes I will get into more draft talk, because the draft is one of my favorite times of the year and I do alot of preparation leading up until the draft. When I know who is eligible I will do a mock draft on here, but its going to be a creative mock draft. I am going to draft my way, the Cowboys way, and Jerry's way, a unique look at 3 different mocks according to how those styles draft. It should be pretty cool and that will be the major area of Crack Hits next week. I will do my mock, I will do a Cowboys mock, and I will do a mock as Jerry Jones, 3 different styles but should be fun. The Oregon Auburn game also gave me a few new prospects I might talk about in that mock.

One last breaking story, Martellus Bennett is on Twitter saying he has been brought up in trade rumors, not really sure where Marty B is getting his info, since all NFL rosters are locked out until after the Super Bowl, and again idk how many teams would be willing to part with a draft pick for a average tight end. Go on over to the mothership who has the story in the True Blue part, of course it is wonder boy Josh Ellis who is reporting the story.

As always folks thanks for reading and feel free to comment below. I enjoy and appreciate all who read and REC Crack Hits, and am really looking forward to your comments below. ChiaCrack will be writing a little more since I have a little more time on my hands the next few weeks, so I will be posting all the time now instead of a weekly basis. Folks thanks for your time and everyone have a good one. PEACE

PS Please vote on the pole below please, its a read suggestion box for the name of my series, if I get enough votes it will stay Crack Hits, if not then it will be changed to Chia Hits, or if you have a better name drop down there in the comment section thanks

All of the FA Safties are very underwhelming

The only 2 that I think are an upgrade, Harper and Weddle, will never hit the market.

Have to take issue with this quote though, “seems we are always a little more interested in the hometown guy.” Historically JJ avoids Texas Longhorns players. Only 2 on the roster are Bigg and RW which is not a ringing endorsement to bring in more.

by BigDinLA on Jan 11, 2011 11:33 PM CST reply actions

Speculating on who’s going to hit FA is pointless, you just don’t know.

not Longhorns

but actual players from the state of Texas
ive noticed we like players from the state of Texas

You left out Dez, dude.

None the less, Jerry knew he was an East Texas HS product.

Supports the point that Jerry seems to favor home cookin’.

Ok, but with the exception of Dez they are all backups or out right suck.

Seriously out of that list the only Brandon Williams, Marty B and Bryan McCann should be on an NFL roster.Screw the state they are from bring in players.

Harper might not

because the Saints could move him to SS and let Michael Jenkins play FS
Weddle could test the market
either way we need to get a safety
Michael Huff is interesting, Im not a huge fan but he really improved this year

Harper does play SS and Jenkins does play FS

Huff is soft.

He is pretty good against the pass, but does not like to tackle.

nice read Chia..thanks :)

The problem with FA at the moment is,with no CBA in place there are no FA’s we can sign as far as i’m aware.
all the teams and players are in a state of “limbo” ,which is a bummer :(

i know

no action until the CBA sucks
I was just throwing some names out though, some lower level signings that might help

by Archie Barberio on Jan 12, 2011 10:33 AM CST up reply actions

CBA uncertainty

I believe will lead to a very strange FA period. Teams will not want to sign new players not knowing if they will be paid for a lock-out year and not knowing the new salary cap and rookie salary scale.

As such, I think it may be a strange season where the draft occurs prior to the majority of FA signings. This could lead to some interesting outcomes as teams will have a lot more “needs” and uncertainty heading into the draft.

By the way, nice post (once again). I am getting more and more interested in Fangio for DC as well…but rumor has it he just signed with the 49ers.

And please, keep the CrackHits Freebased Ideas coming…and maybe save the other name for your ChiaPets of the Draft or FA, etc.

Gooden as an inside linebacker intrigues me, but he seems to fit the Jason Williams mold – that is all of the athletic ability in the world but none of the smarts to use them with.

I don’t know what makes you think he can rush the passer though, he’s had zero sacks in his career and even the knock coming out of college with him was that he didn’t as many plays behind the line of scrimmage as his ability would suggest. With that said though, I’m sure it’s pretty difficult to see the field when you’ve got Ray Lewis and Jameel McClain on the depth chart in front of you.

He definitely might be worth taking a look at.

by G_SWAG on Jan 12, 2011 6:08 AM CST reply actions

well

the reason I said I think he might be able to rush the passer is, like Jason Williams he has good speed
seems versatile because I have seen him all over and in college

for a low level contract I think it would be a good signing, especially for our depth

by Archie Barberio on Jan 12, 2011 10:31 AM CST up reply actions

now a guy I love is Gary Guyton

I believe he is a free agent too, also Rocky McIntosh from the Skins but I doubt he hits the market
if I could get Rocky as my starting ILB with Sean Lee wow

by Archie Barberio on Jan 12, 2011 10:35 AM CST up reply actions

Isn’t McIntosh like the WORST cover LB ever?

by Ben24626 on Jan 12, 2011 5:53 PM CST up reply actions

I’m pretty sure PFF has pointed him out a few times for being bad in pass coverage yeah.

Just for the record

And not to continue an argument, but the point is important. Picking a LB with the #9 selection IS ignoring the OL and Secondary. It is the classic definition of Opportunity Cost. What drives me a little crazy, is how many contend that is not the case, and I’m afraid the DAL brain trust, in their actions and inactions have embraced the same mindset.

DMN’s Fraley puts the DC choices into a good perspective in his column this AM. Good read

The only thing is you want to draft a left tackle in the first round, why would we want to take a tackle in the first round when we could find a great right tackle in the second? We’ve got Doug Free at LT, and apparently he was the best run blocking LT in the league, I’m sure soon he’ll be recognized among the league and will be making a yearly trip to Hawaii.

Why would we want to draft a safety in the first round? In the top 10 where we’re picking? The consensus is that no safety is worth picking in the first round, much less where we’re picking.

If this was last year’s draft and we were picking at spot #9 do you know who probably everyone on this board would be screaming for? Eric Berry or Earl Thomas.

I’m with you 100 percent, but outside of safety and offensive line what’s our next biggest need?

I still contend that we don’t have the play making LBs we need, just look at all of the play making LBs that exist on the top 3-4 defenses.

And good read for the article td, I’m all about going after the Dom Caper’s disciple, what do you think we should go for?

by G_SWAG on Jan 12, 2011 12:07 PM CST up reply actions

Sorry, got so wound up on the first point, skipped the 2nd

I like the way Fraley termed it::

• Does Garrett want do to everything possible to make life miserable for opposing quarterbacks?

In that case, Fangio is the choice.

or

• Or does Garrett want Phillips with a harder edge?

In that case, Manusky is the choice.

I’d rather have either of these than Coach P, because I think a fresh start is important. Other than Reggie Herring, I can’t see any assistant worth keeping on the D side. I’d give the edge to Fangio, but he may follow Harbaugh to SF

really all I want is Ahmad Black

I read today he is compared to Brandon Merriweather and I want Ahmad Black #35 leading our secondary into war
I feel strong about alot of players but the one I am dying to get is Ahmad Black
if we took Sherrod or Carimi 9th and then Black in the 2nd I would be so thrilled

by Archie Barberio on Jan 12, 2011 12:22 PM CST reply actions

Black is a little small

I do think he would be awesome to have but his height and slight weight has me worried he may be Bob Sanders, both very good but constantly injured

by nicholas.rodriguez on Jan 13, 2011 2:37 AM CST up reply actions

Black .. small ..

We played this year with Alan Ball, who’s officially listed as 6’1 and 195 pounds whereas Black is 5’10 and 190 pounds. I’m not worried about this guy’s size, if Alan Ball were in our secondary this year with Black’s recognition and ball hawking skills our secondary would have had a different tone entirely. Ed Reed is 5’11 and 200 pounds for crying out loud and is an elite free safety, he came out of college weighing in the 190s.

Eric Berry who was drafted in the first round last year didn’t have as many interceptions as Black did. Black also had 2 80 yard interception returns for touchdowns, this is from the strong safety position.

I don’t know, Elvis Dumervill fell in the draft despite having the most sacks in the nation because of his smallish size; production is production.

by G_SWAG on Jan 13, 2011 3:47 AM CST up reply actions

Too early to tell, but I think yes.

76 tacckles and 5 ints is a good rookie season, but it does not prove he will be a great pro. He only had 7 pass def and that is very low for a FS. He was 6th amonst ROOKIE dbs in pds and 7th in tackles. The only stat he is a top 5 rookie in is ints. Considering he played for one of the worst passing defenses in the league his lack of pds is pretty telling.

by BigDinLA on Jan 13, 2011 3:13 PM CST up reply actions

Do you think a S should league the league in pass deflections though?

Out of the top 15 players in pass deflections, only one (Ed Reed) was a safety. The rest were CBs. As such, your point that Thomas should be higher than 6th among rookies in pass deflections is weak since you are comparing CBs and safeties in a situation where CBs clearly have a leg up (and unsurprisingly, the only rookie safety ahead of Thomas is Eric Berry). If that is the biggest problem for Thomas (that he isn’t just incredible like Ed Reed), than I would say he is on his way to a pretty stellar career.

gotta agree with my man Dexter there

also for comparison, some people are comparing Ahmad Black to Brandon Merriweather, because people are saying he is “small”
I mean people take being 5 pounds smaller a little overboard imo
Earl Thomas played alot of corner as well and some actually wanted to convert him to a corner

Black played corner early on at Florida before he started in his Sophmore year, he played corner then he became the starting SS and it was a move Florida that they should be glorified for

All I know is Black is a playmaker and was a team captain, meaning he wants to lead and call things out, something we lack since we got rid of Ken Hamlin
Gerald Sensabaugh isnt a leader, heck he doesnt even want to call the plays and coverages because he is weak minded

start drafting team captains and watch the difference it has on the team
I watched New England do this and recently the Chiefs and had alot of success

good point G

Reed is only 5’11 200 pounds, Berrt had less picks than Black

by Archie Barberio on Jan 13, 2011 2:26 PM CST up reply actions

I want Von Miller

if we take Miller than we are going to take a OL in the 2nd, missing out on Black

if we take Sherrod or Carimi in the 1st, then we can take Black, then we can take a DL like Muhammad Wilkerson or a LB like Martez Wilson, that would be a homerun draft

by Archie Barberio on Jan 12, 2011 12:25 PM CST reply actions

Dallas Will Go Oline

. . . with its first pick . . . maybe dropping down a bit – trading with someone wanting a pass rusher or a QB . . . then Dallas will draft a tackle that will strart immediaely at right tackle Costanzo or Carimi or Sherrod or even Solder — this is classic spot for Dallas; they can pick two of those four and keep dropping down a few rounds a time until it looks as if their man is gonna be picked and then pull the trigger.

GOAL in first round is to come away with a starting right tackle that might just be able to fill on the left side if injury occurs to Free. GOAL in first round is to address oline and GOAL in draft is to bring some talent and pedigree to the backup oline for the future. Maybe Dallas can use the trade route to add enough firepower to add another first rounder and grab the Penn State Center Stefen Wisniewski. Defense needs to be addressed in free agency and by coaching up players like Spencer, Jenkins, AOA, Church, McCann etc.

ugh

if they take Costanzo I will puke

by Archie Barberio on Jan 16, 2011 11:32 AM CST up reply actions

At no time have I advocated using the #9 to pick an OL or S

What I am saying is the unit is in crisis – below average at 2 starting positions, average at 2 and better than that at 1. That would be bad enough, but we have no depth and little developmental talent, either. And just for giggles, we are going to get into a bidding war for our best Lineman because he’s a FA. At the most valuable position other than QB.

Turn that #9 pick into a 12-20 pick, pocket an extra 2 or 3 and we’re off to the races. Just because we’ve traded down poorly before doesn’t mean we’re going to again. Otherwise so many people wouldn’t be advocating drafting a DE or LB. How has that worked out?

We live life forwards and understand it backwards

by tdships on Jan 12, 2011 2:29 PM CST reply actions

what happens

if we trade down right, and Carimi and Sherrod are both taken? then what?
to me that would be a HUGE disaster
but generally I like the idea of acquiring a 2nd 2nd round pick or a 2nd 3rd round pick

by Archie Barberio on Jan 12, 2011 6:09 PM CST up reply actions

Then you draft Rahim Moore, or Solder if you like him.

Disaster is just silly. That is why they grade out players. They will have at least 15-20 guys with a 1rst round grade. If Sherrod and Carimi are gone then they select the highest graded guy left.

a top 10 pick that many see (as do I) as a bust

he’s not a game changer that a top ten demands you to be

Got your 3rd rec

For some reason, the reply feature only works sometimes for me. I wanted to get you to the favorites list because you put so much research in, you know about so many, and mostly because you do a pretty good job of stating what is your opinion, and not acting like it is a divine revelation that must not be questioned.

If at first you don't succeed - blame someone else.

What about the idea of Champ Bailey as a FS for us?

Sounds like he wants out of Denver pretty bad and is pushing for a position change to FS. While he is old, I think he’d be a great teacher to a young 6th or 7th round pick.

Hmm, only story I could find is BSPN (Pasquarelli) 6/25/2010

In that he wants premium CB $$$ for a “few” years then switch to S.

Has anything changed since then? If he wants to switch now and is willing to go for reasonable $, then maybe.

An interesting observation, Bailey is 6’ 0", 192lb, & 32, TNew, who I and others have suggested as a change to FS is 5’ 11", 193lb, & 32. Not much difference. But, it does seem to go to the point that TNew isn’t necessarily too small to play FS.

The main issue I have with T new at Safety

is that He was always better in man to man(until this year at least) vs Zone Coverage. So putting Newman in a Safety while it may be an upgrade over Ball would simply be a stopgap measure. Better to Draft a Safety*cough* Prince cough And let him Learn the position…

I'm hoping Prince falls for us.

While I wouldn’t complain about Peterson, I think people fall in love with his return skills too quickly and don’t look at his defense.

by Fergie3108 on Jan 13, 2011 11:13 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah why would we wnat a proven physical shutdown CB?

Peterson is better than Prince in every aspect. The return game is just the icing.

by BigDinLA on Jan 14, 2011 11:13 AM CST up reply actions

I'd be careful with Peterson.

I think he has a larger attitude than Prince. Fame and money might go to his head.

by Fergie3108 on Jan 14, 2011 3:21 PM CST up reply actions

Oh yeah! I agree with drafting a FS

Chia & I have discussed Duenta Williams, UNC, who may fall significantly due to his broken leg. But the reports on him have been excellent as a FS.

Chia really like Black, who may be available. My only point was if we don’t end up with a QB type FS, TNew could be a stopgap for year while the rookie learns the speed of the NFL.

PS: Chia, who knows way more about college candidates than I do, likes Prince also

When in doubt, empty your magazine

CC You had me worried with this line......

“Crack Hits in now way promotes drugs, or drug behavior”

A Darren Woodson safety would delight me.we thought we had him in Roy Williams but something happened to that dude’s head.

The University of Texas has about the most players in the NFL but not many play for Dallas.

Marty B needs to get out of Texas away from his posse. He will probably do well elsewhere and if we can get a second for him grab it.

We need to get younger but still keep enough quality players to have a shot at our division.

I honestly think

a few slight upgrades and Romo healthy we can contend for the NFC East crown right now. The winner of the NFC East we barely lost against when Vick was in and we beat them with their backup going against our 3rd string QB. Jason Garrett is already retained, I do agree with you about contending after the next few years entirely though.

LT was the best RB of most the 2000s, he went to TCU and grew up in Texas
Adrian Peterson grew up in Texas

these are some of the best RBs in the NFL, this is crazy.

Adrian Peterson is one of the best fumblers in NFL history
