How does this Secondary sound?

LCB Mike Jenkins

RCB Prince Amukamara

Nickle Orlando Scandrick

FS Terence Newman

SS Champ Bailey

I think this could be one of the stronget secondaries in the NFL.  The obvious concern would be not having a big hitter in the secondary.  Newman and Bailey as the Safeties are both decent tacklers, but not guys that are going to be as effective playing in the box and stopping the run.  But they would be better than the spares we had back there last year.  I would think offenses would have a tough time spreading out this secondary and beating them deep.  However, you might see teams using two or even three TEs trying to get a size advantage against them.

Thoughts?

I did that for the way the names sounded together without

even realizing what an awesome secondary that would be….

While I have considered converting TNew to FS, it would be an interim fix and expensive

Bailey, approximately the same size & age as TNew, but still demanding top money and not wanting to move to S for a few more years, still wants premier money. So, what? We tie up $20MM in two aging, converted CB’s as safeties? None starter IMO

I think our starting FS and SS may already be on the roster (AOA, McCray, Church), but we do need more backup depth and a true FS wouldn’t hurt. AOA may be our TNew replacement, he did play a lot of CB in college.

So, since I’ve been forced by the logic of the BTB family to rethink our drafting FA needs. TimSchultz36 did an excellent post on evaluation of our needs which really made me rethink how much Familiarity Bias exists in me.

Sadly, I think I have been using my rose colored glasses a little too long. I love Colombo, but as G_Swag eloquently pointed out, his knees no longer exist. IMO, TNew looks to have lost step, and Davis does not appear to be passionate, and maybe, as has been pointed out by others much more knowledgeable than me, we need to revamp our OL, Safeties, and possibly make some changes in our DL.

I’m a strong supporter of the right coach and I believe we now have the right HC. While hating Buddy, I have no bone to pick with his sons, and Rob may well be the DC we need, as well as various assistant positions.

When in doubt, empty your magazine

by MudMarine on Jan 15, 2011 2:20 PM CST up reply actions

Anyway, back to reality.......

I’m not so sure it’s wise to tie up about 15M worth of salary and cap space on safeties, and at the same time ask both of them to learn new positions.

I also don’t get why the converted corner idea is running rampant on boards and blogs. What’s wrong with getting a SAFETY to play safety?

If Bailey coming in cheap is part of the idea, I very much doubt it. He’ll command quite a contract, age notwithstanding.

by fivetwos on Jan 14, 2011 11:49 AM CST reply actions

No, I dont think Champ would be cheap

But he wouldnt command as much as Asomugha. And we would only need to spend one draft pick on the secondary and could commit the rest of the draft to the Offensive and Defensive Lines.

by TCBinNYC on Jan 14, 2011 11:55 AM CST up reply actions

He is old

and losing a step. Why not sign Weddle from SD, or someone established but not at the tail end of their career?

As far as the draft goes, I’d go for the best available player in each round, that isn’t a QB. Why limit yourself to just OL and DL, when you might be reaching in a few round, or passing over someone who has a better chance to contribute?

Corners aren’t safeties!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let me say it again…

CORNERS AREN’T SAFETIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is a huge difference in the positions, and I think the notion that you can just convert a mediocre CB into a safety needs to die already.

newman cant tackle as a CB what makes you think he can play safety? what makes you think Jerry will have the money for a DB #1 pick and a top tier FA DB? There will be a cap next year or there wont be football. Heres one how about D Ware and J Harrison as OLB’s and R Lewis and S Lee as ILB’s …… get rid of your delusions when you post man.

by jfdebois on Jan 14, 2011 1:10 PM CST reply actions

Are there limits to what you can pay by position?

You’re saying Jerry couldnt afford a first round pick and a top tier free agent because they both play in the secondary? Make no sense, guy.

Maybe you are suggesting Jerry shouldnt spend his money that way, but that’s not what you said. And there’s a greater than zero percent chance that Jerry doesnt listen to you. Pretty sure he spends his money how he sees fit.

If you think its out of the realm of possibilities that Dallas signs both a top tier Corner or Safety AND picks a Corner or Safety in the first round of the draft, then you are the one who is delusional, pal.

by TCBinNYC on Jan 14, 2011 1:56 PM CST up reply actions

Your a moron

Yes Jerry can afford it he is a billionaire but as Jerry and other owners have stated there will be a cap or there wont be football and if all he can spend is 125 million (estimated cap next year) on 53 players then he CANT afford to pay a top tier FA and spend a #1 pick on 2 DB’s. In case you havent notice (and judging by your moronic post you havent) there are needs at DE, ILB, OLB, OL, CB, and safety. and with a cap and probably dead money to be paid to players who will probably be cut (Barber, Williams, Davis, Columbo and possibly Newman) then your dream secondary is just that a DREAM.

"Your" a good speller

I love the guy who has to be a bad azz on the internet. Says a lot about who you are in your day-to-day life.

Anyway, you didnt tell me, or anyone here, anything we didnt already know. Yes, it would be a lot of money tied up in the secondary. Yes, both the Safeties would be transitioning from Cornerback. Yes, neither of them will be confused with Troy Palomalu when it comes to tackling.

I find it funny that you are implying I’m suggesting signing all these big name, high priced free agents. I didnt mention Asomugha. Didnt mention Ike Taylor. Didnt mention Atogwe. I suggested signing one Free Agent. Yes, he will command a high salary because of his pedigree, but he’s not going to break the bank. And judging by his comments about wanting to move to Safety to prolong his career, seems to me he might consider something a little longer (lower dollars per year) than a short contract at a very high annual salary.

Finally, I never said this was a “dream” scenario. It’s actually a way to move the pieces around and change the face of the secondary with only two moves.

But, seriously, welcome to the board angry man.

by TCBinNYC on Jan 14, 2011 5:31 PM CST up reply actions

Wow

I find it funny that you think I was implying that you wanted to sign all these big name free agents. You see I never said you wanted to sign a bunch of big name free agents. What I was implying is that you dont know what a SS does. When i read your post it said you wanted C Bailey to play SS I thought to myself (if it did happen) why would he want to best cover corner on the team to cover B Celek instead of D Jackson I thought why would he want the best cover corner to cover K Boss instead of H Nicks. I thought to myself why does he want other teams to run all over us. I was implying you dont know what T Newmans strengths and weaknesses are just because R Woodson could do it doesnt mean all CB’s can make the switch. I was implying you didnt realize there would be a salary cap and/or you didnt know what the teams needs were. I do have to say I agree with who you want with the #9 pick though but I dont agree with the fact that you dont think Bailey will break the bank. Everywhere I read is he will get at least 10 mil a year and probably more and if that aint breaking the bank then I dont know what is. Also 3 new starters in the secondary counts as 3 moves not 2. Yes moving Newman counts as a move because yes FS is a different position than CB. If your scenario (which is a dream you didnt have to say it) works out your secondary will cost about 27-32 mil against the cap. Looks like were stuck with Igor the terrible at RDE and the same right side of the O-line and another top 10 pick in 2012.

by jfdebois on Jan 14, 2011 6:49 PM CST up reply actions

Lighten up, Francis

For what its worth, I agree with some, if not most, of your points. I also agree this secondary would be picked on heavily and would most likely fail. If you go back and read my previous posts I point out many of the shortcomings of the group. As I’ve previously stated, this is not my Dream Scenario, but more of an interesting topic for discussion.

I actually like the idea of Champ as FS, but not the idea of two converted CBs at Safety. I got the idea of Newman as a Safety from Jeff Sullivan (better known as “the Bald Head” from the Dallas Cowboys Star Magazine) in his last column. So, I thought I would get opinions of not only Champ as a Safety, but Newman as well.

Ive been reprimanded

so I guess I’ll tell you all the things wrong with your idea of next years secondary politely …. here goes 1) Newman to FS, hes non physical, ageing, and injury prone and if this could of been done they would of moved him last year instead of Ball 2) C Bailey as SS, hes going to get probably a 3 year 30 plus mil contract and hes known as a cover corner so you think we should pay him to cover the TE and give run support and not do what he does best which is man up against the other teams best WR ….. hmmmmm no comment on that 3) salary cap and other pressing needs makes it so maybe you can get Champ but then to spend another 40 mil on the 9th pick leaves other needs unattended and it doesnt matter how well you cover if you cant get to the QB or protect your own QB.

I have an idea for a more realistic possibility… Hows this?

Batman CB
Superman CB
C3PO CB Slot
The flash SS
and ummm…

Grape Ape at FS

Yeah. Do it.

by saidseven on Jan 14, 2011 2:38 PM CST reply actions

HAHAHA

C3PO would get schooled; I would rather try to sign the Green Lantern or SpiderMan to play the slot. Batman would be a great shut-down pressure corner. I would move Superman to SS since he has the strength to play in the box and the speed to play in space and then use Flash’s speed at FS. Can Grape Ape cover enough ground to play FS?! Maybe use him as our NT
Speaking of other positions…Wolverine is a beast of a MLB able to stop the run, blitz, and cover the middle…I guess Captain America would play well alongside him. DE’s alongside Grape Ape would be the Thing and the Hulk. As OLB’s I like Thor and Beast, they have a great combo of strength and speed. What a useless but fun exercise!

to be honest i don't like it

i don’t see neither newman playing FS and champ SS, newman is just a CB and champ is who should play FS, he would be a centerfield guy, amukamara, well i’m not sold on him, i’m not saying he’s bad i think he’s a very good player but don’t know how good will be on the next level, scandrick on the nickel i don’t know, i even think he should play outside next season, he showed progress the second half of season but i think he will be better outside

by ratware on Jan 14, 2011 10:42 PM CST reply actions

In this scenario the problem is at SS.

Having Newman and Champ both back there isn’t going to cut it. That would be an absolute disaster. However, I think one of them back there at the FS position could work out (though that wouldn’t be my first choice) as long as they had a smash mouthed SS playing beside them.
