Cowboy Mock Draft...rounds 1-7

Here is an early attempt at a mock draft for all seven rounds. I did not include any trades in this draft. I tried to add a little bit of insight into each pick. Also, this isn't necessarily what I would do in rounds 1-7. This is only a guess at what the Cowboys might do. Enjoy.

Round 1 - Tyron Smith, 6-5, 285, OT, USC - Smith's stock is on the rise, and it will continue to rise after the combine. He is the OT with the most upside, and he will be the first offensive tackle taken in this draft. He is a boom/bust prospect that Jerry will fall in love with. Smith has potential to be the best offensive lineman taken in the draft, but it may take him a couple of years before he becomes an impact starter.

Round 2 - Phil Taylor, 6-4, 340, NT, Baylor - Jay Ratliff has been doing a great job playing NT in the 3-4, but last year we saw his production drop quite a bit. Ratliff has been taking a beating at the NT spot, and it finally caught up to him last year. By picking Taylor, the Cowboys can finally move Rat to DE where he should have success. Taylor is HUGE, and he is built to play NT in the 3-4. He will see playing time immediately and rotate at the NT position with Brent. The Cowboys finally get a true NT to anchor their 3-4 defense.

Round 3 - Deunta Williams, 6-1, 215, FS, North Carolina - The Cowboys addressed their o-line and d-line in rounds one and two; now it's time to address the secondary. Deunta Williams is just the type of prospect Jerry loves to take a chance on. Williams is a good player, but he is coming off of a broken leg which will hurt his draft stock. He was a potential second rounder before the injury, but now he may slide as far as the fourth round. Well, the Cowboys don't let him slide past them in round three. The Cowboys feel like he will be a big upgrade at FS.

Round 4 - Clint Boling, 6-5, 304, OG, Georgia - The Cowboys were hoping that OG John Moffitt of Wisconsin would fall to them, but he is gone by the end of round 3. The Cowboys miss on the All-American Moffitt, so they draft the next highest rated OG on their board, Clint Boling. Boling was an all SEC first team selection in 2010 and was a four year starter with experience at tackle and guard. Boling is a smart player with lots of experience against good competition. Some question his athleticism, but he projects as a starter in the NFL.

Round 5 - Jordan White, 6-0, 212, WR, Western Michigan - Wide receiver? Yes, wide receiver. The Cowboys have two very good receivers in Dez Bryant and Miles Austin, but there is a big drop off after that. Roy Williams will be cut unless he agrees to take a large pay cut. Kevin Ogletree has failed to develop like the Cowboys thought he would, so the Cowboys need to bring in some youth at WR. White scored 10 touchdowns and averaged 114.8 yards per game in 2010, and he was a semi-finalist for the Biletnikoff award. White is a good value in round 5, and he could develop into a nice receiver in the NFL.

Round 6 - Justin Rogers, 5-10, 182, CB Richmond - Rogers is a talented kid from a small school. He was a good cover corner, and he made a lot of plays returning kicks and punts. This is a good value pick for the 'Boys, and Rogers can compete for the 4th CB and kickoff return job with Bryan McCann.

Round 7 - Anthony Gray, 6-0, 317, DT, Southern Mississippi - You can never have enough big bodies on the d-line. Gray is a BIG boy, and the Cowboys hope he can work his way into the defensive line rotation.
