I'm watching the Falcons Oline

Dahl, Blaylock, and Clabo are all FA’s this year, could be potential targets.

sure

I’m no expert though, but I’ve heard good things about all 3

then we can go D in the draft, line and secondary.

by scotscowboyfan on Jan 15, 2011 7:39 PM CST up reply actions

A mixed bag

As bad as Atlanta played the o-line was generally not bad but not great either.

I thought Clabo had a good game overall. There were two sacks that came from his side, one on the Charles Woodson corner blitz and another by Clay Mathews on a twist. Clabo got his guy on both of those though. The Mathews sack was more on Dahl, and Clabo got the DE on the Woodson sack but could have possibly done more to come off and pick up Woodson after passing the DE off to Wahl. Aside from that play I thought he had a good game. When they were actually running early in the game he got a good push, and his pass protection was generally sound.

Dahl was a bit worse. He gave up a couple pressures and the aforementioned sack by Mathews. His run blocking was good but like Clabo is hard to judge in this area since Atlanta spent most of the game throwing with the huge deficit.

As for Blaylock, I thought he was having a good game the first 3 quarters before promptly giving up 2 sacks in the 4th (one to BJ Raji, the other towards the end of the game by CJ Wilson). That being said, I think he is still a possibility given that he is a Dallas native who still resides in the area and he shouldn’t be an expensive addition.

I haven’t seen Atlanta play much this year so I have no clue if these results are typical. The game was such a disaster with all the turnovers that it is hard to judge appropriately.

Gotta give alot of credit to the Packers coaching staff and scouting department. With all the injuries they’ve had, they still are able to compete at a high level with so much depth. Seems like the only capable backup the Cowboys had was Jon Kitna.

And they lost Aaron Rogers for the game against the Patriots and still nearly beat them. Thats why I look at Cowboys and think we got a long way to go.

by PrimeTime-21 on Jan 15, 2011 8:33 PM CST up reply actions

What that means

is that they will not be able to hold onto every player they developed once the starters are healthy. For instance they have Kuhn Starks and Jackson at RB already, so once Ryan Grant is back someone is getting cut.

Hopefully the same happens with some of their LBs, secondary, or offensive line…

Yup.

I think the lack of depth on the roster for basically every position, with potential exception of WR and TE, is stunning. Other than maybe Tashard Choice, I can’t think of another player thats starter level now. You can only be as good as your backups.

Jerry wanted to ensure his GM legacy wasn't the Joey Galloway trade

So he 1-uped himself in stupidity with the Roy Williams trade. The offseason decisions in 2009 (trade+draft) may be remembered as the year that slammed the superbowl door shut on the Tony Romo Cowboys era.

Rodgers excelling and Matt Ryan turning it over in opponents territory...

I know its overly simple to look at the game this way, but that is the difference in the game right now.

Rodgers amazes me. He has great mobility, is so calm under pressure, and is extremely accurate with a strong arm to boot. He also does a tremendous job of moving defenses with his eyes. To me, he is clearly the best qb in the nfc.

As a Falcon hater this has been an awesome game.

This should put to rest any talk that Matt Ryan is anything more than a slightly above average QB (just go look at his career passer rating). This also cements Aaron Rodgers as the best QB in the NFC. Thankfully, I still think we are in a pretty good position with the second best QB in the NFC.

I'm not sure...

how to decide between Brady, Manning and Rodgers – I only give the latter 2 the edge cause they’ve been great for so long. This year, I’m not sure theres been a better qb than Rodgers. That team had no run game in the regular season and still won enough games to get in. Now the run game is playing better and their offense looked unstoppable today.

Rodgers had something like 85% accuracy today. Thats insane. He played mistake free football.

by BleedBlueStar on Jan 16, 2011 12:28 AM CST up reply actions

I don't agree...

I don’t think leadership separates Brees and Rodgers from Romo. I think its a much more tangible property – they are all similar, but Brees and Rodgers seem to have better field vision/do a slightly better job manipulating defenses. Rodgers can also make every throw, and the result is cbs have to cover every inch of the field. It seems impossible to defend that passing game sometimes.

by foyesboys on Jan 16, 2011 12:32 AM CST up reply actions

Here is my logic:

If you swapped Brees for Romo I think Romo would be just as amazing in the Saints system but I think Brees would struggle more behind our offensive line that can’t pick up complicated blitzes. It’s just my opinion but that is how I feel.

Put another way, I think Payton has been extremely responsible for Brees’s success to the point that I think Brees himself has been overrated.

You misunderstand.

What I am saying is that if you put Brees in Dallas he would not do as well as Tony has in Dallas. On the flipside, I think Tony, if put in New Orleans, would have done just as well as Brees has there. As such, I am measuring their relative worth. And if I did it for every QB, I think the ones that I couldn’t say the same about would be Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, and Big Ben.

remains somewhat undefined, in that the questions need to be impartial with respect to societial influences and often are not. My point is not the IQ number, but even refering to it is problematic. Are you or I any more or less intelligent than the other based on some online IQ test, one given in workplace or educational environments, and such things?

Ehhh...

That opportunistic defense and Sean Payton’s system had just as much to do with it. Whatever though, it’s just my opinion.

Now Sean Payton is a genius?

Please! Brees is a leader and a winner. The saints were crap before him, and the choice was culpepper or Brees that year, ask Miami how that worked out

He was a good qb on the CHargers

and became an elite one with Peyton. Hes progressed since then for sure.

He was awesome wiith Chargers

The Chargers have obviously proven that they cannot win ever, when it counts. They were forced to choose Rivers or Brees. And they made a mistake.

What a beat down in ATL

ATL’s defense couldn’t stop GB, no surprise there, but I thought the Falcons would still be able to score some points at home.

GB looks pretty good, I think they will be playing CHI next Sunday, and if they win that, I think they can stack up well against any AFC opponent in the SB, even NE (my pick).

I just can’t see the Jets being able to win, unless the plan is to knock Brady out of the game on the first possession.

Rodgers...

Is a great QB. However, can his receivers be any more wide open? It’s easy to be great when you have easy targets to throw too. The Falcons defense was horrendous yesterday!

Give Tony that separation, and not have him running for his life, and we’ll see similar stats and results.

P.S. Don’t forget the Pack was a poor Vick throw away from elimination

Tony does have similiar stats

Go compare Rodgers and Romos stats, the difference is Rodgers is doing it in the PLAYOFFS!

Wah wah wah

Are you saying Jennings and Jones are Better than Dez and Miles and Witten. Pleeeease! He lost Jermichael Finley for the season and did not miss a beat. The Cowboys lose Kosier and we cry like babies. The packers also lost their starting Tackle to IR. I dont want to hear they are open, because the qb still has to find them. I have seen Romo miss so many damn wide open guys its not even funny. Give the man his credit. He just won 2 playoff games and dominated the #1 seed in their own stadium!

Can I ask a question?

Why is it whenever we get to the Playoffs we always talk about Romo. It’s the playoffs, enjoy it. Do I think Rodgers is/will be better than Romo? Yes. Does that lessen my enjoyment of watching the Cowboys play? Not really. We don’t know what next season will bring, we could lose every game, or go undefeated, or anywhere in between.

Aaron Rodgers is fun to watch, the Green Bay Packers are fun to watch. This year, they are better than us overall, but when I was watching that game their offense didn’t seem that much better than our offense. A lot of it is luck, a lot of it is parity.

I’m just really getting tired of this obsession with Romo whenever we talk about the playoffs. I’d love him to take us to a Superbowl, I’d accept if we went to a Superbowl without him. I’d hate it if the Cowboys released him, or benched him, but if the QB who replaced him was better, I’d accept it. We, as fans, are fans of the team, and not the players. If JG thinks he should be our starter that’s good enough for me, and should be good enough for you.

Her Fergie67

Go read Oldtimer post, he wrote “Give tony that seperation..and we would see similiar stats”

So this was a response to that statement.

Get a life, stop bashing people because they dont like Tony Romo. He is not god.

He is a qb who puts up regular season stats and stinks it up when it counts. He has all kinds of weapons and is always zeroing in on a tight end when there is any pressure at all on him. So no, I am not a fan of a guy who has done nothing for us except put up numbers in the regular season. I would rather have Rodgers any day of the week!

I simply stated a fact. You talk about little else here but

your hate for Romo. It’s painfully obvious that most of that comes from your deep disappointment that many of the posters here disagree with you and say so. As for bashing, you’re busily taunting some posters and calling others morons. Clean up your own act.

Wah Wah Wah

Stop your crying. We talk about Romo because when the playoffs come around our offense stinks it up. Rodgers is far superior than Romo. He was a 1st round draft pick and they chased a legend out of town to let him play. He has proven them right, and no one in their right minds would take Romo and his goofy ass smiles after throwing picks, over the strong armed, accurate Rodgers.

Wah Wah Wah?

You’re the one complaining about Romo. Did I not admit that Rodgers was the better QB.

I get really tired of your antics, are you, or are you not a Cowboys fan? There are 33 positions on the Cowboys team. There is 1 HC, one OC, one DC and multiple other Coaches, and you pick Romo to focus 100% of your comments on? I don’t think there is a single person on this board who doesn’t know that you don’t like Romo. Enough already. You talk like a Band Wagoner

Did you watch the game yesterday?

Packer receivers were WIDE open the whole game. Rodgers was 31 for 36. It’s easy to hit receivers when no one is defending them! Rodgers is good, but come on. Most QB’s would have about the same success as Rodgers did last night against a heartless Falcon team whose DC looked like he was in over his head from the first snap.

Jordy Nelson?

Seriously? He was made to look like Wes Welker last night.

by TheCowboyFan on Jan 16, 2011 1:19 PM CST up reply actions

a few comments here...

first of all, his line did a better than usual job, which made a difference for sure.

Second, these throws weren’t so easy. Some were timing where Rodgers found the open man at the right time and put it on the money. Some sideline throws such as the first td showed just ridiculous armstrength, and when a qb can make those throws it really spreads a D out. A defense just cannot cover that much of the field.

Also, the Packers employ so many formations, its hard on a defense. They caught the Falcons with their 5 wide look and Rodgers somehow immediately found the open man. And Rodgers made a bunch of plays with his feet and moved defenders with his eyes and that resulted in his wrs being wide open downfield. I don’t think its any coincidence that Rodgers and Brees seem to be throwing to wide open players.

All these factors seem to manifest themselves most in the red zone, where the Packers have been near perfect in the playoffs in large part because of their qb.

I recommend you watch the highlights again.

Spot on

Rodgers is mobile, and on occasion when he was rushed, or the pocket collapsed, he easily scrambled away while still keeping his eyes downfield. Between his talent and the GB WR’s (maybe the best complete group in the NFL) he made it look incredibly easy to slice up a suspect ATL defense. Should be a tougher game next Sunday.

I give it up for him, and I really didn’t think he was that good back when everyone was declaring him the next great thing, before he ever did anything (I think GB was like 7-9 or 6-10 in his debut season and he was promoted as one of the best young QB’s) Well, I can’t say I was right about him. He’s very very good.
