Around SBN: L'Equipe Claims He's Coming To Chelsea On Five Year Deal

Random Musings

The facts show that Jay Ratliff needs to move to a DE spot. He just has to do it. I don't usually use anyone else's opinion to validate my own, usually because I don't care if someone agrees or disagrees with a given perspective. What I do care about is why a person sits on the side of an issue they sit on. Bob Sturm, whose articles I find somewhat maddening because I think he reads my stuff and then decides to write an article on the topic as though the ideas were both his and novel, recently wrote an article on this idea. The idea was mine. Mine all mine. I took the heat for saying he should move over 3 years ago and now he wants the credit for saying he should make the move? Let...me...at...him!!! Alright, kidding aside, Ratliff has worn down season after season as we watched him become a non-factor in important December games. Watching the best 3-4 defenses play this year, it wasn't hard to see that guys like B(east)J Raji and Vince Wilfork and Haloti Ngata (who also rotates over to DE at times) are different body types than Rat. These aren't guys who expect to beat the centers and guards with just quickness, these are guys who use their strength to stand O-linemen up and walk them back into the QB's and RB's faces, forcing them to move laterally, which makes the throw or run more difficult. For those of you who live for the blockquotes, here's Sturm's take

The Milwaukee Journal is actually featuring this very topic this morning as they ponder the reasons for the Packers' defensive success. Many believe it is all Charles Woodson and Clay Matthews. But the truth is that they are free to fly around the ball because BJ Raji and Ryan Pickett occupy a lot of the opposition's blockers.

As you can see, DE's in the 3-4 are all about Ratliff's size. But, the nose tackles are considerably heavier. In fact, if you add in Vince Wilfork (325) and Haloti Ngata (350) or the recently eliminated 3-4 defenses, you can see that they all have "listed" weights way more than Ratliff could ever approach.

And then he has the audacity to say this?

Ratliff, I have always preferred as a DE in the 3-4. I think he is great at beating guys in pass rush, but in traditional run downs, I think he is adequate, but not quite the ideal size. What he accomplishes because of quickness and will power, I think gets worn down over the course of a season, and then over the course of his career. Wouldn't it makes sense to preserve his special traits by targeting major space eaters in the offseason?

"Always preferred?"..."ALWAYS PREFERRED?!?!?!  Ohhhhhhhhhh, sure you have. Send me the 10 articles you wrote on the topic when Tuna was the coach, buddy. I need some chamomile tea to calm down. Screw that...Oban neat...AND MAKE IT A DOUBLE!!!!

Amazing what good brown liquor and cheerleaders can do for a guy. Unless you're an angry drunk. I hate people who become belligerent when they drink too much. Why can't people at least keep some of their wits about them when they are drunk? Hmmmm...come to think of it, I should be happy they don't. The large majority of my most meaningful one-night relationships were a direct result of the wonder that is tequila. Speaking of which...

I went to this pub in Atlanta called Ormsby's recently (highly recommended). While there, I got to play indoor Bocce (first time I had ever played) and it's basically like shuffleboard where you roll balls about six inches in diameter 25 feet down the field (a patch of carpet bounded by two-by-four's) and get them closest to this little yellow ball called the Pallina. Well, it quickly became apparent that my partner (this redhead who was awfully good at knocking the other guys' balls (look, there's no good way to say it...I tried a few different ways and this was the best of...ugh...ANYWAY!!!) away from the Pallina.  The problem was that I was very focused on trying to get my balls closest to the Pallina (re-reading this now, I see I should have picked a different story altogether) and we did not have a cohesive strategy playing off of the other's strengths. We were down several points, but it was early. So, I told her if she'd focus on covering up my balls (yeah...I got nuthin) when I was able to get them close to the Pallina by leaving her balls (leave it alone...it's a family blog) a foot or two directly in front of mine, I told her that there is no way the other team could knock both balls away from the Pallina and that we'd win and I'd buy her a drink. The tide quickly turned and we spanked those drunken Georgia Bulldog doofs.

Booyah! Cheerleader me!!!

The reason I tell that story to you, and believe me it was a struggle, is that I've been thinking a lot about the hiring of Rob Ryan. I am wholly supportive, but I am going to be interested to see how much Ryan lets Garrett (assuming he will, and I am) look over his shoulder and stay involved with the defense. That's not to say a team can't win with the HC being heavily (or totally) focused on one side of the ball. Tony Dungy had little to do with how Tom Moore and Peyton Manning ran the offense and they won a bling. Same for the Saints where Sean Payton didn't get in Gregg (wasn't one ‘g' enough?) Williams' way. It's my theory that the schemes on offense and defense have to be in sync. If your defense is going to revolve around turnovers, then your offense might be best served as having quick strike ability because you're likely to get into some shootouts. If you have a bend-but-don't-break philosophy on defense that gives up yards but not many points, you'd probably want to be able to control the clock on offense and run the ball consistently and effectively so you can get a lead in the 4th quarter and ice it when you need to.

Another thing about Rob Ryan. Ask me if I care about who HIS DAD is and what HIS DAD thinks of the Dallas Cowboys. I mean really, tell me why I should give a rip. Buddy who!??! Puhleeeeeze!!! Let me be clear, I would support the hiring of someone from the Taliban to coordinate the defense if I thought he could help us win a bling.

Tony Romo on the golf course, Tony Romo at the Mavs game, Tony Romo and Candace getting hitched...wow. Maybe Parcells was right about not allowing yourself to become a Celebrity QB in the NFL. How many Super Bowls has Brady won since he started spanking Giselle on the culo and doing cameos on Entourage? It seems like the more you're adored in the public eye off of the football field, the less likely you are to reach the pinnacle on it.

Cheerleader, take my mind off of this stuff!

I'm really torn on this CBA negotiation thing. From a purely humanitarian point of view, I don't like the idea of NFL retirees not having the kind of medical care and coverage to take care of them as they age. It just feels wrong. At the same time, what company can you work for 3-4 years and get medical benefits for life? Heck, even the Government jobs don't do that. Firemen and Policemen don't get those benefits and it seems like one of them dies in the line of duty every day. What about our military men? The care they get is sub-standard and I see it every day and it infuriates me. These are issues without simple solutions.

So, I am at a moral crossroads. I want my NFL, but I want them to get this done right. Philosophically, I am vehemently against labor unions and I think they are part and parcel to the decline in America's GDP. We have morphed into a service economy and unions are the central cause. But unions aside, there is also just some utter BS in the CBA; for instance, teams having to pay 50% of their revenues to salaries? Are you kidding me? What other business could operate under a financial burden where the operating cash flow (OCF) is so watered down by a single contract clause?

Rookie salaries are ridiculous. How does Jake Long get to be the highest paid LT in the NFL before he has ever played a freaking down!?! On the flipside, I don't want 18 games. I don't mind a shorter preseason, but I don't want a longer regular season. Four and a half months is just fine with me, thank you very much. For goodness sakes, 18 games would rival (gulp!) baseball!

Cheerleader, save me!

I keep reading about how if the Steelers win this year's bling, THEY will be America's Team. Bollocks! Why is it that people in the Media just don't get it? This isn't about who is the role model franchise in the NFL (clearly, the Steelers are it), but you just cannot argue that fact that when people mention the Steelers, unless you're a Steeler fan, you get moderate to non-descript reactions.

Now, bring up the Cowboys in any social setting and even the dumb redhead at Ormsby's is going to have an opinion about them, "Ohhhh, I love the QB...I have his jersey, that Tony Romano" or some goofball who's a Tampa Bay Bucs fan and says, "EFF THE COWBOYS, I HATE THEM!".

Well, good. That's exactly what Jerry Jones wants. In fact, it's like angels singing when he hears that because that guy is going to fly to Dallas in the hopes that his Bucs can take down the (effing) Cowboys and make his year. Meanwhile, Jerry will thank him for his $125 SRO ticket and $60 worth of beer and dogs. Think that girl has a Big Ben jersey? Nope. Think that guy will fly to Heinz to see the Bucs play them? Uh uh. No, Dallas is firmly entrenched in the role of America's Team, regardless of what the talking heads say.

As if that wasn't enough, here's one of the biggest reasons Dallas will ALWAYS be America's Team!!!

Dcc_2010squad_medium

Lastly, I have to say that I'm pleased another potential DC for Philly bit the dust this past week. Dick Jauron, who is one of the most underrated defensive minds in the NFL and someone I have a ton of respect for, replaced our very own Rob Ryan in Cleveland. Philly's cupboard of DC candidates got more bare as time wore on. We've seen how devastating the loss of Jim Johnson (God rest his soul) has been on the Eagirls. Jauron is one guy who could have helped them regain the defensive prowess that they have missed for a couple of years now. I'm secretly hoping Dave Campo lands there as the DC with Brian Stewart as his key lieutenant.

 GO COWBOYS!!!

I think we will

I think Dallas will go to FA for their FS and possibly their NT, depending on how other teams handle their business.

Count me in on the side of the debate that says Rat should stay where he is at NT.

Raf had an article that says that if Rob is like Buddy or Rex then Rat is going to stay in his current position.

http://www.cowboysnation.com/2011/01/where-will-rob-ryan-play-jay-ratliff.html

Rat needs a DT that can rush the passer that can beat one-on-one tackles, Brent can come in so Rat can get a breather. Rat needs help, so that way it is not all on him to get pressure and actually open consistent pass rush lanes for the ILB’s when they blitz. I want dallas to get Cameron Jordan and have him replace someone on the DL who is JAG.

I am not opposed to Rat moving over, if it happens but if he had a decent back-up and some help on the DLine I think he would not wear down as much. Ratliff is the same size as Reggie White when he was rushing the passer playing over the center for Buddy ryan’s defense, and so was Dan Hampton did the same with Buddy and the bears and he was only around 275 lbs.

Be interesting to see after Combine results are in. Just threw his name out there as an alternative to Bowers/Fairley, who stand good chance of being gone early. Kid’s got some talent.

Still up in the air on all that

Too early. Need to see how things pan out Combine-wise, what it looks like other teams are focused on, what our new HC/DC let us know about the direction they’re goin gto take, all that kind of thing. Hell, I got one more game to focus on. Two if you count Pro-Bowl. Plenty of time for draft in 2 weeks. But here, decent site for prospect info. Look Bowers/Fairley/Paea/etc over, see where they fit in what you think.

Pi-ah

Variously, pie-yuh, pie-uh, but the final syllable’s “ahhh” as in the “a” in coma or “ahhh, I see…”

Maybe “p!ss on paying” for playing, maybe not. Kid seems to have a work-ethic it’d be nice as a dropped-down-the-draft pick to keep an eye on.

Being adored is different than being villified

…because you can turn villification into motivation.

Yeah but its dangerous to assume that villification will turn into motivation

just like its dangerous to assume that being adored turns into complacency.

Plus, I don’t know if “adored” is exactly how I would describe Tony’s relationship with the sports or general community.

Vick and Big Ben were villified and had great seasons

- John Wooden (God rest his soul)

by 5Blings on Jan 26, 2011 11:17 AM CST up reply actions

Whoa whoa whoa

Did Vick have a better season than Tony has ever had? Didn’t he have just about as good and maybe even a little worse season than Tony had in 2007 when he was being “adored?” So did that “villification” as you call it even really make a difference?

Plus, let’s be clear, Big Ben and Vick villified themselves. No one did it to them.

Furthermore, you can’t tell me that being villified it is a preferable setting to being adored (even considering that I still don’t feel Tony fits into that category). Without getting into the morals of it, being villified is almost always representative that a person is doing something they shouldn’t. And, for me, that is not what I want my QB to represent.

But, then again, maybe Tony should get an edge. He should probably go beat up some homeless people on live TV so he can get villified and improve his game since being adored has held him back, right?

No arguments about how they became the bad guys

…but you have to admit they probably had something to prove on the field.

I don’t think Romo had the kind of following you’re talking about until after the 2007 season, which by most acounts was a breakout one. He followed that one up with a stinker.

The rest of your comment was outlandish and not a reasonable depiction of my statements, so I’ll just assume you had something you wanted to get off of your chest about Romo being a good guy and how having a good guy at QB is far preferable to the alternative (the latter part of which I agree with).

- John Wooden (God rest his soul)

by 5Blings on Jan 26, 2011 5:57 PM CST up reply actions

Well yeah, the point of my last paragraph is simply that

its just a little ridiculous to act as though villification is somehow better than being adored simply on the basis that to be villified you have to do something that is not generally acceptable. That is the point and I don’t think I was being outlandish in making it even with an extreme example. Now perhaps I could have phrased it better since I didn’t mean to imply you wanted him to beat up homeless people but still, I just fail to see how anyone could believe that being villified is superior to being adored. And if you want some empirical proof, name me one top QB of all-time who was truly villified.

Think about it...

the guy who has a bad rap also has a kind of chip on his shoulder and wants his performance on the field to be the source of his vindication and his redemption (as in both the cases we mentioned).

The guy who is adored (aka media darling) probably doesn’t have the same sense of doom and gloom if they have a bad game or 3.

"You can't live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you."

- John Wooden (God rest his soul)

by 5Blings on Jan 26, 2011 8:48 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah but that analysis fails to take into account

why one has a bad rap and why one is generally liked. I am of the opinion that that distinction can make a huge difference since if a guy is villified that usually indicates he is doing things off the field that actually can take away from your on the field performance (ex. going to jail, going to court, etc.). An adored guy, like Peyton Manning, is much more likely in my opinion to be doing what he should be. That is why your mindset dichotomy to me is extremely inaccurate.

Plus, I think you have to eliminate Big Ben from the discussion since he didn’t hit heights this season that he hasn’t hit before. It isn’t as if being villified added to his game in any real way. Vick is pretty much the only example I think holds any water and even that one is leaky in my opinion since as the season wore on he became quite an object of adoration in the media (MVP talk, countless rehabilitation stories, etc.).

You make a great point about Vick

He’s gone from zero to hero in some circles (not in mine). But I think you’d agree that his ascension took place while he was a zero and that had a lot to do with why he was so notable.

On Ben, I disagree. Who thought he’d be in this position when the Saints beat them and NE was rolling? He had something to prove. Brady has nothing to prove. I think Romo has something to prove, but his words (and maybe his actions) don’t lead me to believe he feels the same way.

With Rob everybody might get what they want.

He and his brother both like to move their linemen along the line. I could see Rat at DE one play and in the middle the next. Sure would like to see a big guy like Ragi in the middle as well. 3 man front or 4 man front would benefit from a big man in the middle. No matter where he plays, Rat needs another lineman to help pressure the quarterback.

Anyways, Bob Blings, mostly agree and thanks for being a muse the musings. Amusing musing. So, being as FA’s possibly post-draft, if it is do we grab best-availble NT there or slap it in as another FA-requirement (Free, OL, maybe safety, now this?)? Forgo the big-bodied and chance a Paea? He has a bling

…which puts him in a class that excludes Marino, Jim Kelly and others.

I’m with Aikman on this one. I thought Joe Montana was the best QB I ever saw until I really took the time to watch Peyton. I call myself lucky to be able to watch him play on sundays.

I think Manning hasn’t ever had the supporting cast that guys like Brady, Ben and Aikman have had.

When was the last time someone said the Indy defense (especially their run defense) was scary? (hint: the next time will be the first time).

Look at this year. He’s making rookies and practice squad players look like legit threats. How well does Blair White do on any other team? I’m betting he spends most of his time picking splinters out of his butt from being on the pine.

I’ve made my opinion clear. For my money, he’s the best ever.

Call it...

virtual agreement on the Montana/Manning perspective. As field generals and overall leadership, I saw Montana as a, if not the, classic case, but watching Peyton it’s become a toss-up. Two different sets of physical attributes, two different guys, times, schemes, many things, but man oh man, lucky to have seen them both understates it. 3rd rounder and a 1st, 82nd and 1st, just goes to show ya never can tell where them unforgettable memories are going to come from.

Rings and blings aside.

Now, if we could just get them playing each other, in their prime, with their respective “best” team around them, that’d be one helluva game to watch.

But as for what Manning’s done this year, making PS look near-starter, it’s one of the damnedest things I’ve ever seen. Definitely makes an argument for “best ever”.

Josh Brent is 315lbs and already one of the strongest men on the team. ( I can’t find the article where Ratliff talks about how strong Brent is ). Give him (Brent) an offseason to get even stronger, it only makes sense to move Ratliff to end and resign Spears. That would truly let you daft the BPA. And on a side note, since I have been telling anyone who would listen we need to move ratliff to end for years. You must have gotten the idea from one of them which means it was originaly my idea.

Would the move of Rat to DE

lower the priority to draft a DE with #9? If so, I’m all for it, becuase I strongly believe the priorities lie elsewhere, as in every level of the OLine – Starters(2), backups(many) and developmental(any) as well as Safety. Teams just did not pay the price for all the attention given to RAT at NT last year and it had a cascading effect on Run D, Pass Rush and Secondary play.

I say, what the heck is the difference if you take your guy 3 spots too early?

It’s a foolish argument. The team has a dire need at OT.

I guarantee you bling that almost every qb in the NFL

Plays golf in the off season, goes to sporting events such as basketball games and either dates or are currently married.

Really don’t know how all that constitutes being a celebrity. The reason you know Romo does all those things is that he’s the qb of the Dallas Cowboys and not just any qb but one of the best in franchise history, with only Staubach, Aikman, Meredith and White being more accomplished.

I'll go back to an observation from a couple of years ago

One of the reasons I respect TR is he doesn’t try to manage his perception, he is who he is and seems to let the chips fall where they may. That said, I am sure he learned from the Cabo fiasco, that some actions are just plain dumb and required a little deeper thinking. There will always be a segment of the Cowboy fanbase that will abuse TR for whatever perceived shortcoming until he delivers a championship.

I honestly don’t believe his golf, love life or other ‘celebrity’ activities affect his play one way or another.

Meanwhile, Peyton and his 9-10 playoff record, complete with 6 1st game losses – can make every commercial on TV. Would 1 less commercial = 1 more playoff win?

What I find strange is how much credence you put in all this. If

ESPN says it’s so, it’s so? What are we talking about? That Romo dares to take his girlfriend on a date? I don’t doubt that, and I. Don’t. Care. Dating his girl doesn’t make him less of a QB. The fact that you care so deeply or why you think he’s less of a leader or a QB because he has a life is what I don’t get.

Why would I care about other team's fans or what they

think? They hate anyone not their own, and they use trite criticisms because they can’t come up with anything else. As for the “majority of people,” are you sure you’re right about that? What people? The small sampling on the internet? Hate to tell you, but the ‘net is hardly representative of anything but people who feel strongly enough to post on it, and that is not a majority of this world. As I’ve pointed out before, Romo’s is one of the most popular jerseys in the NFL, he DOES get press because people are interested in him (for better or worse); I don’t think any of that denotes a guy people are particularly down on.

I think not. You’re definition of a celebrity qb certainly isn’t the same as Parcells, thats for damn sure.

By the way, I have heard from a fairly credible source

that Peyton Manning screws around on his wife. I wonder why that doesn’t make the tabloids, since they’re willing to repeat any old thing about Romo (and you seem willing to believe it).

by Fernie67 on Jan 30, 2011 5:27 PM CST up reply actions

Oh, and one more thing; dunno about Ryan, but the others

are married, which make for less tabloid fodder. They channel their spare time into other celebrity activities like commercials, etc., as we’ve already established, I know, I know, the single guys should be monks until they marry and never be seen out on the town. One more time: why are you so preoccupied with this guy’s social life? Do you seriously think it keeps him from playing good football?

by Fernie67 on Jan 30, 2011 5:30 PM CST up reply actions

See above...

I’m not preoccupied with it, but unlike you, I don’t ignore it, especially when he’s being paid 67 million dollars to make football his primary (looking up at Candace’s photo, I will accept if he makes it a close second) focus.

So why is it a complete non-issue with you when teammates have been heard questioning his work ethic, his practice habits and his off-field decision making?

Let me ask it this way…

If Romo doesn’t win a bling and the comments about his life off the field (golf, nightlife, etc.) persist, how will you view him 5 years after he retires?

"You can't live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you."

by 5Blings on Jan 31, 2011 11:48 PM CST up reply actions

You're absolutely right; I ignore it. I'm not

influenced in my opinions by the tabloid media, unlike you. I’ll never understand why you’re more preoccupied by perception than by what you see on the field. Have you ever seen Romo take a play off? Give less than a 100% on the field? I haven’t. As for “teammates [being] overheard,” by whom? The “unnamed guy”? You’re right, I don’t take that seriously either. I watch the games.

If Romo never wins a ring, I’ll be disappointed, just like I was for Danny White, who was also terrific and gets a bad rap, who didn’t have to put up with internet rumors and was Mr. Clean Cut, and who also didn’t have a D good enough to protect a lead. In five years, I won’t care any more about Romo’s dating than I do right now. Of course, in five years, I hope the Cowboys have several more rings, whether under Romo, or his successor.

The Jay Ratliff thing...

is interesting. I sit on the fence because I still think that it’s just assumed he would excel at end. The way I see it is if Rob Ryan thinks he can, he will.

Also your boy Jake Locker apparently looked horrible at senior bowl practice. Todd McShay still loves his athleticism but there are scouts putting him at a 3rd round grade and another guy even said he didn’t think he would ever be an NFL starter.

Ouch.
