This year's draft could be the biggest draft for the Cowboys in franchise history. With all of the glaring holes on this team the only logical answer is to trade down. I know it sounds crazy with the Cowboys having the #9 pick and a chance to get a top ten player in the draft.
Look, if the Cowboys stay at #9 and draft a guy like Cameron Jordan, DE/DT, California or Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska that's all fine and dandy and I wouldn't question those picks. But what if I told you the Cowboys could get a starting tackle, guard and DE or safety in this year's draft within the first two rounds. Would you take that? Well that could be a reality if the Cowboys fight their feelings and do not reach on a player in the first round.
My formula for this up coming draft would to trade picks with the Minnesota Vikings for their #12 pick and their #43 pick for the Cowboys #9. Minnesota needs a QB badly and will be looking to take a top QB in this year's draft. I know a lot of mock drafts show teams like Buffalo, Arizona, Tennessee, and San Francisco taking defensive players but I guarantee at least two of those teams reach for a QB in the first round. And when they do, the Vikings will be begging to get into the top 10 as bad as they need a QB.
Now here's where things get a little tricky so please pay close attention and try not to get lost. I'm simply following the Walterfootball.com mock and changing it to the Cowboys' advantage...........
1. Carolina Panthers: Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn
2. Denver Broncos: Da'Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson
3.Buffalo Bills: Jake Locker, QB, Washington. This is where the bills reach for a QB, with a new coaching staff the bills will be looking for a franchise QB. With Chan Gailey coaching in the senior bowl he should have a good look at Locker and a chance to find something he likes in him.
4.Cincinnati Bengals: A.J. Green, WR, Georgia
5.Arizona Cardinals: Robert Quinn, DE/OLB, North Carolina
6. Cleveland Browns: Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU
7. San Francisco 49ers: Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri. This is the second reach for a QB in the draft the 49ers need a QB and with a new coaching that may just happen if Alex Smith doesn't fit their plans.
8.Tennessee Titans: Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama
Now this is where things get interesting the Cowboys are on the clock they could take Cameron Jordan, DE/DT, California or Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska. If they do then fine, no problem, but let's just say they trade down and switch the #9 pick for the #12 and #43 pick from the Minnesota Vikings.
9. Minnesota Vikings: Cam Newton, QB, Auburn. With the Cowboys' pick the Vikings reach for Newton hoping to hit a home run in the draft.
10. Washington Redskins: Julio Jones, WR, Alabama
12. Dallas Cowboys: Cameron Jordan, DE/DT, California or Derek Sherrod, OT, Mississippi State.
I still find it hard to pass on Cameron Jordan at this spot so I sill think the Cowboys may pull the trigger, but if they don't, they take Derek Sherrod, OT. I know a lot of boards may want Nate Solder here but I think the scouts overrate Solder and he may just be getting pushed up the board....I would get deep into the draft but I'm just going to keep it simple and make the Cowboys pick excluding what every other team may do.
With the #12 the Cowboys select Derek Sherrod OT, Mississippi ST, with #40 the Cowboy select Phil Taylor, NT, Baylor the Cowboys get the beast in the middle that they need to move Rat to DE. With the #43 pick the Cowboys select Marcus Cannon OG, TCU. Now I might be reaching with this pick but I think with the Cowboys having an extra 2nd round pick why not take another lineman. Plus by the time the draft comes around, this guy will have shot up the board. At this point is where I stop my mock draft. I have a few more guys that I'm looking at in the later rounds and will share on a later date. But if I'm the Cowboys I think "Trade Down"......
