Cowboys Mock Draft - 7th round pick

As I mentioned in the last post, I'm participating in a mock draft for Dallas on another site.  I'm preparing for our 7th round pick.  Looking to get input from this group.  But again, remember this is the 7th round, so we're getting to the bottom of the barrel.  Options for Dallas:

Star-divide

WRs: Niles Paul, Nebraska; Jeff Maehl, Oregon; Denarius Moore, Tennessee. (I havent selected a WR in the draft)

TE: Mike McNeill, Nebraska; Cameron Graham, Louisville; Wesleye Saunders, South Carolina. (I havent selected a TE to this point and I traded away Martellus Bennett for a 3rd round pick.)

OL: Tackle Derek Hall, Stanford; Guard Justin Boren, Ohio State; Guard Andrew Jackson, Fresno St (I selected a Tackle with my first round pick and havent selected one since.  I intended to pick an interior lineman early but the value was never there.)

FB: Stanley Havili, USC; Henry Hynoski, Pitt. (I havent picked a FB yet.  Only Stanford FB Marecic has been picked at the position.)

K: Alex Henery, Nebraska; Kai Forbath, UCLA. (None have been taken.)

OLB: Tom Keiser, Stanford; OLB Doug Hogue, Syracuse. (I havent picked one, but I did get an ILB in the middle rounds.)

DB: FS Jermale Hines, Ohio State; FS Mark LeGree, App State; FS Brian Lainhart, Kent St.  (I've already selected a FS and 2 CBs in the draft.  There are no suitable SSs left.)

Looking forward to your input.

i would have to vote for an interior lineman, wr, or true fullback. any of these would add practical depth. maybe a fullback would see the most playing time. not sure who is the best lead blocker, but that would make sense. with john phillips’ versatility maybe we go a different direction. could be losing roy dubya and hurd this offseason, so another wr to prod the ogletree would be good. jeff maehl or niles paul get my final vote. (read somewhere that niles impressed at the senior bowl practices)

Justin Boren. I am surprised he is still there.

I agree

Watched this kid play all year. Just gets open and catches everything. Think he’d be a great compliment to Miles and Dez. Don’t think Roy will still be here, and I’m not sold on either Hurd or Ogletree.

FB STanley Havili

upgrades a position and is versatile enough to take the place of the #3 TE.

Who are you?!

i say go with henery

hes too good to pass up here, i know hes a kicker but he is considered the best kicking prospect to come out in years and that is a big need for us. this year we learned we cant trust buehler for field goals under 40 yards

I'll go into specifics in a post at a later date, but

I picked an OT and FS in the first two rounds.

I picked a CB RB, and DE/DT in the third and forth rounds.

Then and ILB and CB in the fifth and 6th rounds.

Didnt trade for any players and only traded away TE Martellus Bennett.

WR Niles Paul or Jeff Maehl

Why didn’t you pick a SS instead of a FS?

AOA is taking over FS.

He is?

Not saying you’re wrong. I’d love to see that happen. Just think it’s way too early to make that call with much confidence. He needs to get (and stay) healthy first.

There arent many Strong Safeties in this draft

Not many good ones at least. Take Mocking Dan’s Top 200 list over at Mocking the Draft, for example. He has 4 SSs listed in his top 200. However, he has 13 FSs. Of the Strongs, none of them are in the top 60, and only three are in the top 100. And one of those guys everyone seems to love, Ahmad Black weighed in at like 183 at the Senior Bowl. That’s just too light. So, to answer your quesiton, I refused to overdraft one of these guys just because they were so scarce.

Besides, if I can only replace one of our safeties from last year, its FS Ball.

Pick Justin Boren

From this list…Second choice WR Niles Paul.

Would have liked to know who the players are that you already picked. Not keen on the trade.

And with the pick I took ...

Kicker Alex Henery, Nebraska.

For me, it came down to the following four players:
WR Niles Paul, Nebraska
WR Jeff Maehl, Oregon
OT Justin Boren, Ohio State
K Alex Henery, Nebraska

I first ruled out the WRs. Although I would love to have one of these two guys, and I think Dallas needs one, I just felt the other positions were in worse shape. Maybe we keep RW one more year. In any case, with multiple WRs left who could possibly help this team (Denarius Moore of Tennessee is still there also) I felt I would get a chance at one of them at least in free agency after the draft. There are only 10 picks remaining in the draft until its just a free-for-all.

So now I’m down to Henery and Boren. Basically, I felt Henery had a greater chance to get selected before then end of the draf than Boren. Seems that this late people are looking for specialty positions like K, P, ST Ace, Return Specialists, FB, etc. I think Boren could still be there afterwards. And with the prestige of the Cowboys and the need at Guard (hell, he would have an opportunity to vie for the starting Guard spot) I feel if he doesnt get drafted, we could easily be his top option in free agency.

There are a few others I am looking at as UDFAs as well. I will make a post tomorrow outlining who I took in the draft and want to sign in draft free agency.

Thanks for playing along.
