Back To Basics:Pet Cat Robert Sands ENTER SANDMAN

As we all know, the Dallas Cowboys are desperate for some superior safety play. We have lacked the playmakers necessary to succeed in the NFL and NFC East for some time. Ken Hamlin was a player I was never in love with, but after he was released and we rolled with Alan Ball, Hamlin’s presence was missed. Hamlin was the glue to the secondary and held it all together. His play calling and ability to recognize coverages helped our cornerbacks make plays and create plays themselves. Now as we all know Hamlin was not a playmaker and would not create a lot of turnovers, but he was solid. In moving on to the 2011 season, I think a big part of the off season will be replacing Alan Ball and Gerald Sensabaugh with playmakers, guys who we can rely on to make the plays in the secondary.
This draft in my honest opinion is a fairly weak class for safeties. As of right now I only really see three or four players that could be options for us in the early rounds of the 2011 NFL Draft.
Ahmad Black: As you all know, I am a huge Ahmad Black fan, and I will stick to that player until he is drafted. An opinion I have the utmost respect for is Mike Mayock's of the NFL Network. Mayock has been covering the Senior Bowl for the NFL Network, and a player he values highly is Ahmad Black from Florida. Even though knocked on for his size, Mayock strongly believes that Black will become a starting player in the NFL. Mayock goes on about how Black looks on film. He is just a playmaker and is around the football all the time. Regardless of Black’s size, in my opinion he will be one of the best safeties in the draft.
Rahim Moore: We all know about Rahim Moore and how good of a prospect he is, but I just do not see him falling to the second round for us at 40th overall. Hey, things do happen and players do fall on draft day, but being realistic I do not believe that is going to happen. But if it did, then Moore would be an easy draft pick.
Jaquan Jarrett: Another player I feel strongly about is Jaquan Jarrett from Temple. Even though he is from a smaller school, he has the athleticism and size to become a good player in the NFL.
Robert Sands: The player that has skyrocketed onto my radar is Robert Sands from West Virginia. This kid has amazing size, but at the same time has really great athleticism. For a player that is 6’4, he is truly a great athlete. So let's take a closer look at Robert Sands.
To be honest, I have never watched a West Virginia game this season. The main reason for that is because the only NFL prospects I thought would come out of West Virginia were Jock Sanders and Noel Devine. Now, I did hear some buzz around the internet about a safety they called "The Sandman". So I did some research earlier this fall on Sands and was pretty impressed with him for a guy his size. I felt Sands would return to college and enter the 2012 draft as a major safety prospect. Then earlier in January when the underclassmen list came out I noticed Sands had declared for the NFL Draft.
I will be honest. I was initially kind of turned off by his size, simply because most think of bigger safeties as in the box type players that lack coverage skills. Robert Sands does not lack coverage skills, he is a ball hawk that makes plays on the football. I usually like to use the terms "beast", for a great prospect, "stud" for a really good prospect, and "solid" for a good player. Robert Sands, in my opinion, falls into the beast category. With great size and athleticism, I really feel strongly about Robert Sands this draft and he really could be the steal of the draft for his position.
Robert Sands weighs in at 6’4 and 221 pounds, definitely a big guy. Scouts Inc gave Sands a grade of 78 and have him as their third rated safety in the draft. Durability is not a concern, as he started or appeared in every game in his college career. What I really loved about his scouting report is that Scouts Inc describes Sands as a high character player, who was a vocal leader for West Virginia. Known for picking up his teammates and helping them out in tough situations. One thing we need in our secondary is a vocal leader, and leaders are hard to find. A vocal leader in the secondary that can make plays, man that is a major plus right there. He also is respectful and mature for his age, another intangible that stood out to me in his scouting report.
His awareness and football IQ is above average which is good, and that is something that can be further developed as you get game time in the NFL. Makes quick decisions and a quick diagnosis, therefore getting into a good position to make the play. Reads the quarterback's eyes very well and gets a quick break on the football. Has the ability to anticipate the routes and is a physical presence in the secondary. Can get over-aggressive at times and gamble, but what I like about that is at least he is willing to make a gamble. Noted that he is a fierce competitor who plays with a lot of passion, something we lack at times here in Dallas.
His long frame gives him excellent range and he covers a lot of ground with his long stride. Is a little tight in the hips, but for a guy his size has really good movement. His burst is good and can recover when caught out of position. Takes excellent angles and is very aggressive attacking the football. His size and long arms allow him a wide range to make a play on the football. Has good hands and comes down with acrobatic interceptions. Thrives in jump ball situations. In the run game he makes quick decisions and bursts downfield. Strong and violent tackler that is also reliable. Delivers big hits and is violent when delivering them. Has great timing when going low on the ball carriers legs, and chops their legs out. His size plays into a major advantage in tackling and being physical.
Sounds like a pretty nice scouting report in my opinion. I have heard that Sands is a 2nd-4th round prospect. Draftcountdown.com thinks Sands will run in the 4.5 range in the 40 yard dash, I think from what I have seen on tape maybe a he will run a high 4.4 or a low 4.5. If Sands goes to the combine and tests well, I think he is going to blow up there and a lot of teams will fall in love with this kid. He is everything you can ask for in a young man. Everything I have heard about him is right up our alley, the type of intangibles we should be looking for. A kid that is polite, passionate, a leader, and has all the athletic skills is exactly what the Dallas Cowboys need in the secondary.
Sands is from Carol City, which is in the area of Miami, Florida. He says he tries to model his game after Kenny Phillips, Ed Reed, and Sean Taylor. I believe Robert Sands could become our starting SS right away, because of his willingness to be a leader along with his physical abilities. What I really would like to see is Sands fall to the 3rd round, that would be our best value because it would allow us to take an offensive lineman in the 2nd round. Unless we take an offensive lineman in the 1st round, and Sands really starts to fly up that draft board, then I would take him in the 2nd round.

Chia thanks for breaking down the sandman
I really had not heard of him until I saw Mayock had him as a top 5 safety. I think he is a solid 3rd round safety. Pat Watkins soured me on tall safeties but him and Kenny Tate have swayed me a little. Too bad Tate is going back to school.
I really like Tate too
he went back to school
they are so different from Watkins, Watkins couldnt be a ballhawk he could tackle though
right now yeah I would say Sands is a 3rd round pick as of right now

Interesting. Didn't have the guy on my radar.
I’ll have to look him up.

beast bro
he can tackle and is a ballhawk
the size bothered me at first but he is very athletic
by Archie Barberio on Jan 28, 2011 4:54 PM CST up reply actions
I will withold an opinion on him until I see his combine numbers.
His size makes me worry about his lateral agility and overall quickness.
Those other guys
on that film clip must be real butt draggers. He looked like he gets around the field pretty well, got in good position to make tackles and pass defenses and then finished what he started. If I was that running back he caught after running around the other two guys in the way, I would have just quit. This guy has a lot of what dallas has been lacking, looks like a hitting tackler, and a pass defender as well. I have a thought about his size, it would make him good to assign as cornerback assistance to take all the 6-3 and up big stud receivers in the league out of the mix. That’s part of the deal, take the monster receiver out of the game and make the other team beat you with their lesser talents. You cant stop everything possible, so take out their strength, kind of like taking a rook or queen in a chess game. Position, position, position.
I agree
he flys around the field, demonstrating to me that he is fast and quick
and the guy TACKLES wow, Ball and Sensaballs couldn’t tackle a stuffed animal
by Archie Barberio on Jan 28, 2011 5:25 PM CST up reply actions
Yeah!
I was the only one in OCC’s draft challenge to pick him up. :) I also like the Sandman and I would LOVE to have a guy with his size and speed that also has a great character and leadership on our team.
I never saw a game with him in it, but I don’t follow college football that much except for when draft time comes up due to time constraints during the year, but I love this kid. Everytime I watch videos on him I am impressed. He would bring a lot to the Cowboys and really help cover the large receivers on other teams, especially the Giants whom have a pretty good record of burning the Cowboys.
I was critical of Black, but Troy Polamalu is very close in size to him and is ALWAYS around the ball, so I won’t knock him for that. I’d love to get 2 safeties in this draft, but I’d like it to be a FS (Moore) and either a SS or another FS whether that be Sands, Black or DeAndre or one of the others.
I know
I really like Black bro, Im a huuuuuuuuuuuuuge Ahmad Black fan I really want him or the Sandman for us at S
imagine both
I would cream my pants
by Archie Barberio on Jan 28, 2011 4:54 PM CST up reply actions
Yes
if you could possibly get both, your safety situation would be good. Envision not a SS/FS arrangement, but rather a safety 1a/1b arrangement. If the other team has a big strong stud star receiver, use sands as the corner help to neutralize them. If the other team has a receiver under, say, 6’2" or so, use Black. Let the one not assigned to remove the other teams best receiver out of the game cover the middle of the field and keep an eye on the other corner’s back. Unfortunately, NE is sitting on tons of picks and this is the talent they plan to load up on with their 4 2nd/3rd rounders. Gonna be improbable to get both. Everyone needs to quit this trade down for good picks stuff. Too deep a draft, 2nd and 3rd rounders are going to be hard to get folks to part with, and these are the types of folks who people will snap up on speculation. If Watkins is still there, I really like taking him with the 2nd. Without another 2nd or two pretty good thirds, getting both these guys together is an impossibility, except for UNFORTUNATELY NE. I could see NE taking Watkins with their low first, and Black and Sands with their seconds. If someone doesn’t get in front of their steamroller. As in the rest of the world, the rich will get richer. Hopefully, Jerry will let JG drive him out of the talent projects and move uptown a bit.
imagine that
New England takes say Mark Ingram and another stud in the 1st with their two picks
then takes Black and Sands
ugh I hate them

Short List Tall Player
Sand’s hight bothered me at first as well. (One site has him listed at 6’6") I did watch a few WV games and he shows up well. Smart is good too…& think it works!
*Where is Duenata Williams 6’2" 205lbs on your list? (Higher than Sands on Mine)
Or… Will Hill FL 6’1" 202lbs. (Good Size, Speed & Better athlete than Black? Anxious for Combine.results) &
Tyler Sash Iowa S 6’1’ 210lbs.
Highlights for these guys on line. They don’t publish lowlights so I digest their good stuff w/a grain of salt.
Nice review of "SANDMAN’! Best nickname since “Prophet” came along. Well done. :-)
Golden Rule: He who has the gold makes the rules.
lol
I got Duenta 4th on my list because of the injury
if not for that injury, he was one of my highest rated players at safety
by Archie Barberio on Jan 28, 2011 4:53 PM CST up reply actions
Gotta disagree here Chia,Williams is better IMO,but the Sandman would be a nice consolation if D Will is gone.

"gambler" usually equals lack of speed
I personally think if a defense needs to rely on safeties, then something is wrong.
Not saying that’s the concern here… a good safety is always needed, but I’ve found that usually to be the case. I don’t know that much about Sands, but you said he was somewhat of a “gambler”. In the secondary, that usually means “lack of speed.”
he's pretty fast man
I think he is a gambler because he wants to make a play on the ball
like I mentioned, draftcountdown.com has a 4.55 40 time listed as a projection

watched the vids
I can’t get a read on his closing speed. Above all, that’s what I would look for in a safety.
His size is great. He’s aggressive. Looks like he plays the ball well, too.
Still, I wouldn’t look past a pash rusher for Cowboy’s top pick in the draft. A great pash rush can make ordinary safeties look good, IMO.
Thanks for the clips, tho. Good info.
He makes me think Mays
If it’s in a straight line, he’s going to be OK.
If he has to change directions, you can almost see how much effort it costs him to turn and run…
Compare his way of running and changing direction to someone like Black or Moore and you will see what I’m talking about.
For Rob Ryan’s D, I would stay away from this guy.
Arnold, almost 5 years of good memories, you'll be missed.
Viva México! Go Cowboys!
No
In the games that I saw, the Safeties were interchangeable, when they played cover-3 and the “SS” came closer to the LOS for run support or short to intermedium coverage, sometimes you would see Ward (their SS), but sometimes you could also see Elam and even their 3rd Safety in three Safeties sets.
You can’t go in this draft thinking that the guy you want is an in-the-box SS only, someone like that doesn’t fit the Defense, at all.
Arnold, almost 5 years of good memories, you'll be missed.
Viva México! Go Cowboys!
true
I dont feel Sands is a in the box safety
but i get your point
I would love a TJ Ward type player, even though he was knocked on for alot of things coming into his draft
by Archie Barberio on Jan 30, 2011 11:48 AM CST up reply actions
Look at his cuts when he has to change directions
He rounds his cuts, there’s no suddeness in how he changes direction, Watkins had the same problem, they’re so long that it’s impossible to make sharp cuts.
With some of the smaller guys, you can teach technique, but there’s nothing that you can’t do about the limitations of a body. You just have to look around the League, find a good coverage Safety higher than 6’1. Good luck.
Arnold, almost 5 years of good memories, you'll be missed.
Viva México! Go Cowboys!
usually
5’11-6’2 is the height you want in a safety
to be honest I didnt want another Watkins like safety, but this guy is loads better than Watkins
Whats your take on DeAndre McDaniel?
by Archie Barberio on Jan 30, 2011 12:55 PM CST up reply actions
SS yes, but not for the price
If you’re talking about a 2nd or 3rd pick, then he’s definitely to be considered. But, not for for number one. I think we can only assume he won’t be around for the 2nd round.
His size is an advantage IMO, not a disadvantage. I think he’s good, it’s just that the Cowboys have more important considerations right now than a safety, or a cornerback, unless its the second coming of Deion Sanders. And, it’s not.
We need a relentless pass rush. Get that and our current secondary all of the sudden will look real good.
I disagree
S is the biggest issue besides OL
pass rush is high too I agree there, Ware needs help
interesting debate, is the pass rush gonna fix the secondary? or does better players in the secondary fix the problems?
I think A.you fix the pass rush, you give your corners more time B.pass rush makes QB’s make mistakes
I think we need a corner if he falls in the 1st or in the 2nd or 3rd
but I think I can live with Jenkins and Scandrick, its Newman that concerns me the most
by Archie Barberio on Jan 29, 2011 8:05 PM CST up reply actions
Mike Mayock has him rated the 4th best safety
Safety:
1. Rahim Moore, UCLA
2. Ahmad Black, Florida
3. Deunta Williams, North Carolina
4. Robert Sands, West Virginia
5. Will Hill, Florida
I like that list
but Im not a Will Hill fan really
I got
Moore
Black
Sands
as my top 3
Williams was in my top 3 but drops to the bottom, broken fibula is a bad break
right now we dont need projects, unless its like a 5th round pick, then I am running up to the draft board
but in the 3rd or 4th, no way we need players that can contribute right now
by Archie Barberio on Jan 29, 2011 8:16 PM CST up reply actions
watch
people are gonna sleep on Black and Sands, for their size
ohhhhh he is tooooo small
ohhhhh he is tooooo big
watch
remember their names both are going to be good NFL players
by Archie Barberio on Jan 29, 2011 8:17 PM CST up reply actions
And they will be right. Black will not hold up physichally.
I am still not going to comment on Sands until I see his short shuttle and 3 cone times. If Sands show good lateral agility I would not mind his size, but wonder if h would be better suited at 4-3 LB.
actually....
I like sands but i kinda think about his ability to tackle smaller RB’s like the Jones Drew, or sproiles.. 6 ’4 is tall…
yeah, he fits into my beast status category

i see he also had 5 ints but when i look at his games i see alot of drop ints..
could this guy be a poor mans Patrick Peterson?
