Jason Garrett...Job well done

Hey everybody. In this post I would like to examine the coaching job that Jason Garrett did in the second half of the 2010 season.

First of all, let me say that I was not really expecting much from Garrett. When we were 1-7, I thought he was part of the problem, and I didn't expect much at all from him as head coach. In all honesty, I wanted him gone, and I thought Joe DeCamillis was the best man for the job.

Now, I can admit that I was very wrong and very pleasantly surprised by what Garrett accomplished. I had very low expectations, but I was filled with a bit of optimism after hearing Garrett's first press conference. I was very impressed with what he said, and he got me pretty fired up. That being said, I am a huge Cowboy homer, so I told myself to just settle down and wait to see if the players actually respond. Well respond they did.

I think for us to appreciate the job Garrett has done we need to think back to how things actually were when he took over for Wade. The Cowboys were 1-7 coming off of humiliating losses to Jacksonville and Green Bay. It was obvious that the players weren't putting forth 100 percent effort, and the team was a mess. At 1-7 we were without our starting QB, and the second half of the schedule was more difficult to the first half of the schedule where we only managed to win one game.

At the halfway point of the season, I looked at the schedule and thought that we would be lucky to finish with 2 or 3 victories. Garrett was able turn this lackluster, 1-7 team into a 5-3 team during his tenure. He won impressive games on the road at Indy and in New York. His three losses came by a combined 7 points. Somehow, with this roster full of holes and a team that had underachieved all season long, he was able to be extremely competitive, and he gave his team a chance to win every week. That is all you can ask for from a head coach.

I do understand that this roster needs a big makeover, and hopefully we will have more talent on the roster next year ( draft and free agency). This makes me very optimistic with Garrett as our coach because he should have an improved roster next year and Romo back at QB. If he was able to go 5-3 in the situation he was in, he should be able to do even better than that if he gets all his guys around him and has everyone buying into his system. I hope Jerry lets Garrett make decisions about his staff and the roster (probably wishful thinking...it is Jerry Jones we're talking about).
