Around SBN: L'Equipe Claims He's Coming To Chelsea On Five Year Deal

Which Free Agents should be Re-Signed?

The list of Cowboy Free Agents I saw was as follows:

FS Alan Ball

OT Alex Barron

DE Stephen Bowen

DE Jeremy Clark

OT Doug Free

DE Jason Hatcher

WR Sam Hurd

OG Kyle Kosier

SS Gerald Sensabaugh

DE Marcus Spears

ILB Leon Williams

Not sure if that's a correct or complete list, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

Obviously, Doug Free is our top priority.  He's not going anywhere.  Beyond that, I would keep Bowen, Hatcher, and Kosier if it were me.  And Kosier only if he were willing to sign a short 2-3 year contract at average money.

I would let the Safeties (Ball and Sensy) walk as well as Sam Hurd who will be too expensive for a ST guy.  Spears is a tough call, but I think I take my chances with Bowen, Olshansky, Hatcher, Lissemore, and (if needed) Ratliff at DE.

You'd have to be crazy to let Sensebaugh walk

He’s been one of the most consistent members of our secondary. 5 ints this year, and he would have had as many last year if he wasn’t playing with a club on one hand. He’s a tough, smart player, who’s been an assett in both the run and the pass.

I don’t know where people like Josh Ellis get off saying he’s overrated or not that great a player. You simply don’t let a guy like that walk, especially if you’re already going to be starting a green player at FS next year.

by Admiral Dallas on Jan 4, 2011 5:10 PM CST reply actions

lmfao are you serious

all most all of his picks came on awful throws that any SS should intercept
he’s not smart
he is actually pretty stupid
he doesnt want the responsibilty of making calls in the secondary, he has made that known
if he were so smart, he would attempt to make a tackle instead of diving at players feet and whiffing and run straight out of bounds
his play vs the Giants and Vikings were flat out embarassing
one game he played great this year, vs the Redskins and got knocked out unfortunate for him
but I dont want him back

by Archie Barberio on Jan 4, 2011 5:28 PM CST up reply actions

Oh, aren't you a cool guy?

You look really intelligent, what with your ability to laugh at my opinion and point out one play where a defensive player whiffed.

Get real.

You’re both wrong, he’s a JAG, not a stud and not crap.

by Ben24626 on Jan 9, 2011 3:44 AM CST up reply actions

You’re all wrong :-)
The draft doesn’t look stellar for safeties this year, which automatically makes Sensabaugh one of the best options at safety in free agency. Everybody would like an upgrade at SS, but there might not be one better than Sensi. This year.

by One.Cool.Customer on Jan 9, 2011 6:38 AM CST up reply actions

Just cause the other options are poor doesn’t make him a better player, that makes him more valuable. That must be one of the stupidest things I’ve heard you say OCC.

by Ben24626 on Jan 9, 2011 6:00 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

He was good last year, not great, good. He played worse this year, just like the rest of his teammates.

He’s fast, has a good backpedal, can jump, his ball awareness is kind of bad but he can make up for that with solid man coverage, can tackle and takes good angles.

If you’re hoping for improvement from every player at CB, there’s also room for Sensabaugh.

And the last of it, replacing both Safeties in one year would be kind of though. Especially with no Free Agency until things are decided with the CBA. And then, if there’s a CBA, would teams have more cap to sign their own FAs?

I’ll keep Sensabaugh and hope for better Coaching.

What makes you think that?

This past year? Then Mike Jenkins needs to be replaced inmediately. I would think twice about replacing Scandrick due to his first half level of play, who will you get next year? The Scandrick of the 2nd half of the season or the one of the 1st? And Newman is getting old…

Let’s replace the whole DB group!

Is it his performance in 2009? He wasn’t great, but he had a year of nice coverage. As I said, his ball awareness is kind of bad, but he makes up for it with the fact that he can run with every TE and pretty much every receiver (Sidney Rice in last year’s Playoffs, one-on-one coverage, he had good coverage, Favre made a great pass).

I just wud not spend on him bc of the fact we can get a nice safety thz year in the draft....

2nd round we would be in great postion.. so y pay for an average safety when we can get a quntion Carter, or that moore kid in the 2nd… to me its more economics and having the ability to upgrade cheaply than anything..

there mzy not be any earl thomas or eric berry elite talent safies in thz draft but there are sum gud safties.. nate allen , morgan burnett …gud & ill take that in the second

plz sensi is just an average safety to me..

by lostar2009 on Jan 5, 2011 10:39 AM CST up reply actions

Mmmmh, yeah, but you have 2 safety positions to fill

Moore or Carter or McDaniels fill one position.

What about the other? You’re going to cross your fingers and pray that AOA gets healthier and becomes a player back there? Dunno, the praying didn’t work so well for Ball…

yep...aoa

if we keep the zone package in he has great upside

his scouting report
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/historical/1675324

but still he has to earn his spot.. i do not want another Allan Ball or buehler out there. dallas might draft 2 safety prospects, or have Aoa battle Mcray there is no way to tell now.. but it would be great to c what the kid can do with reps..

he’s not like Ball who was just a corner playing safety thiz guy seem like a good tweener

by lostar2009 on Jan 5, 2011 8:19 PM CST up reply actions

I disagree, he showed poor awereness on that play and should’ve made a play on the ball, it wasn’t out of reach, he just didn’t look back. Poor awareness is a common knock on him I hear aswell.

by Ben24626 on Jan 9, 2011 3:46 AM CST up reply actions

Sensi was brought here to cover TE and he did a very good job at it.

Ken Hamlin didn’t do anything last year, yet he kept the receiver in front of him unlike Ball who tend to play two-hand touch back there this year…

by LiLGiT on Jan 4, 2011 8:42 PM CST up reply actions

Keep in mind keeping him means giving him a decent contract

With him being a FA, its not like he would agree to a one year deal or anything. He’s going to want at least 3 years probably. The question is not should we cut him, its should we sign him. There are better FA Safeties available.

by TCBinNYC on Jan 4, 2011 10:35 PM CST up reply actions

The problem is that they aren't available

No CBA means no Free Agency until a new CBA is agreed.

That’s going to hurt the Free Agency planning and I don’t think that there’re going to be many moves, most teams will have available cap to retain their own players.

So, you would do good with keeping the players that you think can still play and be decent starters, to me, the list includes:

Free
Sensabaugh
Kosier
Hatcher (basement low kind of deal)
Spears (Olshansky’s kind of deal)

Arnold, almost 5 years of good memories, you'll be missed.

I like your list

But I would make one flip flop. I’d rather lose Hatcher and keep Sensabaugh. Hatcher, to me, hasn’t done anything that a draft pick (even a mid to late rounder) couldn’t do. Sensabaugh, while far from great, is an average safety who i think would be serviceable with a solid safety next to him. We have a ton of holes to fix, and if we can get another average year out of him, it gives AOA and/or Church a chance to develop enough to take over.

I ran into a group of men trying to take an old lady's purse and decided it was my duty to help out. She was a tough old broad, but in the end we got her purse.

Alex Barron

How does he sleep at hight? He should give back the money he stole and promise never to dress up like a football player ever again.

by cowboy north on Jan 5, 2011 8:00 PM CST up reply actions

"How does he sleep at night?"

Probably very well, in a big comfy bed, in a big spacious house, with some big chested friendly girls. He got about 10 million dollars from the Rams for being the 20th pick in 2005. I think he probably sleeps just fine :)

Free, Bowen, Kosier

Sensabaugh or Ball, Hurd and Hatcher if they are cheap.

1. Free
2. Spears
3. Kosier
4. Bowen
5. Hatcher

Free, Spears, Bowen or Hatcher, mayb Hurd

Free is an automatic…

The best between Bowen or Hatcher for depth..

But whats the beef with Spears? The guy been solid.. a nice run stuffing DE.. If u want a bunch of Ratliff’s gud luck finding them.. He can be ink for great price..

With Hurd we know what he is a 4th WR & Special teamer,, What’s his value i dunnno but i know we wasted a 2nd round tender on him… prob cud ink him for a 4 year 7 million dollar deal or less.. basically for pennies..

I think it was stupid for JJ to giv him the tender then ask for some of his money back.. just stupid…
If Hurd jump ship o well.. we need Wr’s and way.. & hurd isnt any better than a 4th.. we need a 2nd or 3rd grade WR…

Here is my assessment

FS Alan Ball – I think he is restricted?

OT Alex Barron – Let him go

DE Stephen Bowen – resign him

DE Jeremy Clark – I don’t think he plays for us anymore

OT Doug Free – resign ASAP

DE Jason Hatcher – Let him go

WR Sam Hurd – right price

OG Kyle Kosier – right price

SS Gerald Sensabaugh – right price

DE Marcus Spears – right price

ILB Leon Williams – veteran minimum

Sean Lissemore = The next Bruce Smith

by Lissyyyyy on Jan 4, 2011 8:25 PM CST reply actions

Ball should never have been drafted

i rather bring back Alex Barron than Ball back

by LiLGiT on Jan 4, 2011 8:48 PM CST up reply actions

Alex (head lock) Barron

Yes let him go. Go Alex, go and be free, free to play you’r yellow flag football anywhere but Dallas.

by cowboy north on Jan 5, 2011 8:24 PM CST up reply actions

My list

Free is a no brainer. Bowen is a no brainer. I believe that Spears should be resigned, but not for a ridiculously high price tag. Sensei, Hurd and Kosier are only if we can get good deals, although Kosier is kind’ve in the same boat as Spears for me… he could be a good back-up if we do sign a stud.

by Static on Jan 4, 2011 8:34 PM CST reply actions

My thinking as of this minute :)

Jason Hatcher; if he came back for the vet minimum I would take him back to camp but if he wants more than that I say goodbye.

Gerald Sensabaugh statistically had a good year but does nothing real well. He’ll be looking for as much money as he can get and I doubt we’ll be that team.

Alex Barron; no ( and there’s no need to explain).

Marcus Spears will probably get a better offer somewhere else than I’d be willing to give.

Doug Free definitely resign (starting LT).

Stephen Bowen would be a good resign (still young and is decent).

Kyle Kosier on a 2 year deal. He’s still solid. We won’t be able to replace everyone in one year and Colombo and Davis go first.

Alan Ball on a 2 year low cost deal (young depth with experience).

Sam Hurd if he comes for the veteran minimum or a touch more (with Roy probably gone he’s valuable as a veteran WR back-up and good special teams player).

Leon Williams, for the vet minimum, yes (Brooking probably gone so some experienced depth could be handy).
