Back To Basics: Pet Cat Draft Edition

Today in another episode of Back To Basics, we will take a look at a few of Chia's pet cats for the upcoming NFL Draft in April. I will start doing a few mocks, but I want to wait another 2 weeks so we have a better look at all of the players that are coming out of school. The Back To Basics series featured talk on the OL, DL, and Secondary, so I will give a pet cat from each category. Picking 9th overall has its perks and its not often the Cowboys get a top 10 pick so we better make the most of it. I have given the idea of trading down more thought. It would allow us more room in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, where alot of quality players could fall to us. I know Gabe Carimi and Derrek Sherrod are not top 10 picks at the moment, but I have never seen a draft where a quality OL doesn't fly up the draft boards. I think Sherrod or Carimi will be in the discussion for top 15 picks, maybe higher. I also encourage you write down your pet cats in the comment section, curious to see what pet cats people have in mind.

Star-divide

Let's start with the OL where we need to seriously improve if we want to succeed in 2011. Our OL has Doug Free and Andre Gurode definitely returning. Marc Columbo and Leonard Davis, IMO should be released because the right side of the OL was the problem, and has been for a while now. A guy I would like to retain is Kyle Kosier, Kosier is a free agent. I feel Kosier has always been a underrated player in the NFL, especially not valued enough by the Cowboys fan base. Kosier is getting old he is 32 years old, and will be 33 in November of next year. But Kosier was steady and solid this year. If we can resign Kosier for a 1 or 2 year deal, I think we should go that route. We can start Doug Free, Kyle Kosier, and Andre Gurode.

The right side of the OL has to be fixed. So lets start with a player that currently plays tackle for TCU, Marcus Cannon. Cannon is 6'5 350 and has the similar build of Leonard Davis who is 6'6 355. Both played tackle to start their careers, and when we brought Davis over we moved him to RG, where he was a Pro Bowl caliber OL. Davis has fallen off BAD in the last 2 years. Where we once had a big mean OL, we are now left with a big "soft" RG who is used to pull block (I still don't understand why), and constantly whiffs on his assignment. Davis is also straight out abused in stunts and pass rushers. I think Marcus Cannon is the Cowboys prototypical RG, even though it may be time to start changing our grading system and fundamental scouting idea's on the OL, but Cannon is going to be a great player IMO. Now Marcus Cannon didn't exactly set the world on fire in his bowl game, but one mediocre game shouldn't give you the wrong impression about him. Marcus Cannon is a big mean OL, that can pancake people but have enough footwork to get out and pull. Pulling isn't exactly Cannon's best method of operation, I would say straight ahead push blocking is his forte. Some say Cannon can be a solid NFL RT, but for this offense I would prefer him as our RG, where he can use his size and brute strength to succeed. Putting him at RT would mean a 6'5 350 OL would have to set the edge and maintain blocks on pass rushers, something I think Cannon can do, I just think at RG for us is the perfect fit. We like the big cattle at RG, as with Leonard Davis. I feel Marcus Cannon could be a amazing RG for the Dallas Cowboys, and as of right now Cannon is a 2nd round pick and that fits into our draft status. Marcus Cannon would be a perfect fit for us in the 2nd rd, and IMO could come in and start right away. One part of fixing the OL is we need guys that can become basically instant starters, and that's not unrealistic. I just think the time of drafting developmental players should end, unless the upside is immensely great. So Marcus Cannon from TCU is one of Chia's 2011 NFL Draft Pet Cats.

Let's move on to the DL, where I have dedicated alot of words and time on. The DL is a big question mark heading into the 2011 season. We have 3 DE's that are upcoming free agents, Marcus Spears, Stephen Bowen, and Jason Hatcher. Igor Olshansky is scheduled to make around 5 million dollars in 2011. Me personally I really don't feel Igor is worth 5 million dollars, because if he is worth 5 million dollars, how much is Spears worth? I would like to retain Stephen Bowen, Bowen is still developing into a nice 3-4 DE. Bowen can stuff the run and get to the passer. Now Spears is a quality DE that I would like to keep, just for the right price. Spears is a great locker room guy and a warrior for us on game days. I just hope there is no hard feelings, but there might be and Spears has plenty of reasons to leave Dallas, and money could be one of them. A 3-4 team might be willing to pay more for Marcus Spears and outbid us, if we even bid at all. Jason Hatcher I would not retain, he has his moments where you really think he is going to breakout, but then disappears again. Maybe if the price is right, we can keep Hatcher. Now Igor has to go IMO, he is just not worth the money. He is a big strong guy, but really lacks the ideal intelligence IMO. Too often did I see him either quit on the play, or just do something stupid and not maintain his gap. I say we should move on and thank Igor for his wonderful play in 2009, but 2010's performance is enough for me to move on.

My DL pet cat is Muhammad Wilkerson from Temple. Wilkerson is 6'5 305 and really reminds of the Chris Canty type of build. He had 70 tackles, 9 1/2 sacks, and 13 tackles for losses. Wilkerson is a disruptive DE, that can stop the run and get to the passer. With his size, strength, great speed and quickness, he is going to be a disruptive player in the NFL. He reminds me alot of Chris Canty, being the size. Alot of guys with Canty's size and I just remember Chris Canty. Guy's with this size and speed can become what Canty was not, consistent and a starting DE. Now Wilkerson dominated the MAC conference, and that might shy off alot of people because of Temple being a smaller school, but this guy has serious talent. I think if he was playing for a big time school he might be a 1st round pick. Some team is going to fall in love with him at the Combine, where Wilkerson will show off his speed and strength. Alot of the drafting services I have taken a look at say he is a 2nd to 3rd round pick, I would love for him to tall to us in the 3rd round. There are going to be alot of big name prospects in the 2nd, so there is a good chance he falls to us in the 3rd, but Linval Joseph who was selected by the Giants last year had a similar draft scenario. Like Wilkerson, Joseph played at a smaller school in ECU and dominated the competition. But when he worked out for teams, scouts fell in love with his size and strength. Wilkerson is going to beast of a player, his size, strength, and amazing speed for a big guy are the things scouts look for. I seriously believe if we draft Wilkerson, he is your starting DE regardless of the school he played for. Wilkerson is that good of a player to adjust to the NFL talent level. This guy is going to be good on the run, rush the passer, and wreak havoc in the backfield, he is a disruptive player. Temple also has a S Jaiquawn Jarrett that I love, Temple is starting to pump out some serious NJ talent.

My pet cat for the secondary has to be Ahmad Black from Florida. Black plays SS for the Gators, and is a little undersized and I know that might scare people off but he plays big. At 5'10 190 pounds he plays like a warrior out there. I have had the chance to see Florida play quite a bit and he can play football. He likes to use his body and isn't afraid to dish out the big hit, while staying fairly healthy. He was a highly productive football player for Florida his career, and this year he had 109 tackles, 10 for a loss, forced 3 fumbles, recovered 2 fumbles, and had 5 interceptions. When I watch this kid play, he is all over the field and is a play maker. We are dying for play makers in the secondary, especially at FS and SS. People might say "Oh he is small, just like Alan Ball" but I would make this statement, "Was Alan Ball's real problem for us his size? Or his lack of play making ability?" Alan Ball's size was never a major factor in his mediocre play, it was his play making ability. Black is a play maker and he will find great success in the NFL. Bill Belicheck is drafting alot of Florida players and knows when he gets a Urban Meyer coached kid, he is getting a NFL ready talent. Brandon Spikes was too slow, or Jermaine Cunningham was too small, or Aaron Hernandez wasn't a complete TE, all question marks on his Florida selections, and all are going to be key players for the Patriots. Ahmad Black possesses everything I want my Safety to possess, smart fast strong and has ball skills but can lay the wood. I think Black will indeed be a player they invite into Valley Ranch for their annual player evaluations. The only problem is Black is a 2nd to 3rd round pick, and IMO with a weak safety class could propel himself into round 2 discussion. This year I would love to get 2 2nd round picks, but at what cost would it actually cost us? That is why I am more and more open to trading down in the 1st, and then landing a quality player while acquring a extra 2nd or 3rd pick, allowing us to trade back into the 2nd round. Ahmad Black is a player I love for us, I think he fits what we have been lacking. He makes alot of plays, evident by his amazing tackle number for the season, is a ballhawk, and a leader. I think Black can come in and start for us right away, if Alan Ball can start, then a star player from Florida can too. One other safety I like is Quinton Carter from OU. I really like what Carter brings to the table, also Duenta Williams even though he broke his fibula. I wanted to make Ahmad Black the focal point of the article because we need to start drafting Florida and SEC players, IMO most of the best athletes come from that conference.

So that wraps up Back To Basics Pet Cats Edition 1, there will be sequels and a mock draft in a few weeks. Please feel free to drop your pet cat down in the comment section, I am looking forward to seeing what some of your guys pet cats are. Thanks for reading, peace.

Great post

However I disagree with your assessment that Hatcher can stop the run. I’ve seen him get mauled way to much to think he is any kind of a run-stop threat. Spears proved his worth with his absence IMO.

Love your draft choices especially Marcus Cannon.

he's a beast

THE PROPHET ohhhh thats a great nickname for him
really wish we get him
we did a live mock draft on the Mocking The Draft site, I got us Ahmad Black in the 2nd traded back into the 2nd for Marcus Cannon and took the Prophet in the 4th
a Giants fan selected Gabe Carimi for us 9th overall
i’ll let you judge for yourself on that pick, when Robert Quinn was on the board

I am.

I don’t think he is enough of a game changer for the #9 pick. I am sure I will be disagreed with below, but I don’t think he has the quickness to be an elite 3-4 DE.

but don’t think he’s worth a top ten pick. I was actually hoping he would be around at the end of first top of second. He’s a teir below the Fairley, Bowers etc of the world

he had a horrible attitude, Im glad he is gone

another guy I like is Allen Bailey from the U, I could see him flying up the boards to #9

No I am just not easy to please.

He is ok in coverage and soft against the run. I would much preferred Morgan Burnett with that pick.

by BigDinLA on Jan 7, 2011 3:33 PM CST up reply actions

not gonna lie I wanted Burnett too

but Sean Lee is going to be a good football player watch
and ILB is a need, so was Safety, but we got no ILB’s for the future besides Lee
and if Lee was healthy at Penn State he would of been a 1st rd pick

by Archie Barberio on Jan 7, 2011 3:35 PM CST up reply actions

Problem is IMO he does not fill the need.

I just think he plays soft and is injury prone. I really hope he proves me wrong, but other than the 2 ints he has underwhelmed.

by BigDinLA on Jan 7, 2011 3:37 PM CST up reply actions

I disagree

with the injuries and setbacks he had, he had a nice season
what I like is he can blow plays up and has great instincts
instincts and smarts arent exactly givens
Jason Williams, great athlete, no football smarts, if he had smarts he would be a phenomal player

by Archie Barberio on Jan 7, 2011 3:38 PM CST up reply actions

Soft?

He may end up solid ILB, but Morgan Burnett filled a much bigger and more pressing need. I am still bitter we drafted Felix over Mendenhall.

With a very average pass rush in 2009, he had 10 INT's

The defense was always on the field this year and the offense was the FBS expert in 3-and-out’s.

He’s going to be a fine player.

by 5Blings on Jan 7, 2011 5:07 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

And I’d love him on the Cowboys, but he’ll likely be out of reach somewhere between our first and second pick.

by One.Cool.Customer on Jan 8, 2011 3:24 PM CST up reply actions

yeah thats the problem

I wish he was considered Eric Barry type of talent so it could be justified to take him 9th overall
and he will be long gone by the time we pick in the 2nd

by Archie Barberio on Jan 8, 2011 3:58 PM CST up reply actions

But let me challenge that...

I am the biggest opponent of trading down in the draft but this time, with this many QB’s and teams that need them, it seems like a VERY compelling offer could be out there.

One thing I am wondering about as it relates to the CBA is how the GM’s cannot trade players anymore because of the cap hits that come with those trades. It seems to me that, if the rules around those cap hits changed for the better, there could be more trades of players packaged with picks and THAT might make a bunch of sense.

"You can't live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you."

by 5Blings on Jan 8, 2011 7:05 PM CST up reply actions

no I agree

i hate trading down, especially after 2009
the only year I saw us trade down and it worked out was when we traded with the Browns and we traded back into the 1st with the Eagles and got Spencer and then next year drafted Felix

might be a good year to trade down your right

by Archie Barberio on Jan 8, 2011 8:02 PM CST up reply actions

Yes, this is an interesting scenario, even with Luck removed from the picture.

Draftsite.com have 4 QBs going in the top 14 in their mock draft. 5. Newton, 7. Mallett, 12. Gabbert, 14. Locker. Of course you can argue who goes where, but it’s not unrealistic to expect 4 QB to go in the top 15.

That makes the #9 pick prime trade down real estate, and one that could command a significant premium.

by One.Cool.Customer on Jan 9, 2011 6:50 AM CST up reply actions

could be a similar scenario like in 07

where a QB falls and a team wants to jump in, like Cleveland did
that situation was totally different because Cleveland had picked Joe Thomas, a great player by the way, and wanted back into the 1st, sacrificing their 2008 1st round pick

but yeah somebody might fall in love with Newton Mallett Gabbert Locker and want to jump a team to get him

by Archie Barberio on Jan 9, 2011 8:56 AM CST up reply actions

I'd like NE to give us their 2 #1's and then we could get the OL/safety combo we need

Von Miller is going to be on alot of 34 teams radar

and the Pats and Jets dirty little secret is they dont have a pass rusher, a dominant one
thats the truth

the Chiefs have Tamba Halli, who is one of the more underated pass rushers

Small safetys scare me,I like the Williams kid even though he broke his leg.Butch Davis is a heck-of-a “D” coach with Dallas ties and he had a top ten “D” this season. With his injury he may slide a bit, worth a look IMO.

A lot will depend on his arm length.

If he has long arms to match his his height he could be a superior pass blocker. The one thing I have read about Solder is he has great feet. That is something I really look for in potential OTs.

Dudes! Gurode started out as a G and he underwhelmed

Keep him as C or trade him (maybe all those Pro Bowls will entice other teams). We need experienced players and/or more draft picks.

When in doubt, empty your magazine

by MudMarine on Jan 8, 2011 3:04 PM CST up reply actions

I wont trade Gurode

I am keeping Free Kosier Gurode as the starters
cant just get rid of Gurode yet
but RG and RT need 2 new starters
I would be shocked to see Leonard Davis starting next year

by Archie Barberio on Jan 8, 2011 3:09 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say

Don’t move Gurode to G, he was terrible! And he’s not the best center at all, but he has been serviceable.

I haven’t changed my position about BIGG, he should be dropped from a very high place. When we cut him, I seriously doubt he’ll be picked up unless it’s at a really low salary (league minimum – whatever that’s going to be this year).

So, yes, completely agree with RT & RG. We need new blood. Love Colombo’s heart, but I think his body’s shot. But he may not have recovered completely from the broken leg. Just because of the heart, I’d let him come to camp and see if he can still compete and if not, can he/will he accept a backup, swing role?

When in doubt, empty your magazine

by MudMarine on Jan 8, 2011 3:19 PM CST up reply actions

Columbo is done

Davis is done too, cant afford a 8 million dollar backup

nobody brings this up but I think Igor is going to make 5 million this season
Igor needs to go to

Cut Kosier as well.

He only looks good because the rest have been so bad. Sign Blaylock and Nicks and upgrade the entire interior line. Draft a good young RT and this line could be set for 4-5 years.

by BigDinLA on Jan 9, 2011 10:21 AM CST up reply actions

And replace them with who exactly???

I don't see two FA's and a rookie on this O-line next year.

Kosier stays IMO.

You do realize...

if there is a season this year, there will likely be a salary cap? Plus, we still have to resign Free, a DE or two and likely a couple of Safeties.

Then add in the fact that we very likely would have been over the cap if there had been one this season. In other words, our cap numbers are already very high. There likely won’t be a lot of cap room to make a huge splash, or two, in FA. Even cutting Bigg, Barber and RW is only going to help so much and might actually hurt in RW’s case.

It’d be great to bring in a couple of Pro Bowl caliber players. Will we be able to afford to is the question. Blaylock may not be on the Pro Bowl team, but he is a recognized strength on a playoff team that has a lot more cap room than we do.

I would actually like to see our exact cap room for 2011

cutting Igor Barber Davis Roy free’s up some serious cash

by Archie Barberio on Jan 9, 2011 2:11 PM CST up reply actions

Yes there will be a salary cap.

Cutting players now before the cba goes into effect will prevent any adverse affects. By cutting Big, RW, MBIII, and Columbo frees up almost 25 million dollars. We have almost 15 million in expiring contracts. There is plenty of money available.

As to Fa’s there are 0 FA S’s that would be an upgrade this year.

we have money and if we release the scrubs we have more cash to spend

Harper, Landry and Poole will probably all be resigned and the rest are not very good. Hell Sharper will be 36 or 37 by then. Reed Doughty is awful and Pollard is a PF machine.

I'm not assuming they will.

I just listed the ones that have contracts that will expire after this season. If they stay or go elsewhere is entirely up to them. Offer more then what their current team is offering and things tend to happen.

Jordan Babineaux – Seahawks – 28 http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=3076

BTW, these are all Safeties on playoff teams. Of course, some are backups and some are better than others. Are they better than Ball or Sensabaugh? For the price? By performance? I’ll leave that for you guys to discuss…

What do people here think about Tyron Smith?

I´ve never seen him play and know nothing about him, just that he´s a monster phisically. But the Wes Bunting dude from NFP loves him. I know we can´t afford to draft project players in the first round. but isn´t a potential blue chipper worth it?

We can trade down from number 9 and perhaps add a nice 2nd round pick.

We need help now

Not in 2 or 3 years. The same people that talk him up also compare him to Brick Ferguson, but they fail to mention that his first two years in the League were poor because he needed that time to get used to the strength of the game…

Smith is a project with a lot of potential, so he should be taken by a team that’s willing to develop him.

Now

In his first 2 years he was poor and extremely expensive. That’s my point, do you want 2 more years of Colombo’s level of play? Or worse?

For a team with the needs of the Cowboys, they can’t look for players that can develop into All-Pro level starters with time, they have to look for starting caliber players from day one.

Big difference.

Marcus Cannon is not a good fit for a passing offense.

He has slow feet and his size is a huge red flag. He is 350 now and that scares the hell out of me. We need to get more athletic not bigger. As for Ahmad Black I also have watched him play and I am not impressed. He makes a lot of big “highlight” plays, but he is inconsistent and is not a force against the run. His 5’10 190lbs is a huge problem when it comes to long term durability. Small safeties do not last in the NFL. There is just to many big rb’s and wr’s at this level. I can not comment on the Temple kid, but he sounds like a beast and the 2nd round is a good place to address the DL. I would love to see us trade back to 14 or so and pick up a late 2nd or early 3rd. I would like to draft Sherrod in the first. I like his mix of power and athleticism. I would like to draft Rahim Moore, but think he will go late first very early 2nd. As for a FS I would like to see if Dunta falls to us in the 4th due to his injury.

by BigDinLA on Jan 7, 2011 10:31 AM CST reply actions

I wish Rahim could fall to us at 8

But I agree with you. Cincinnati, Cleveland, Denver, Arizona could all draft safety at the top of the 2nd.

You need a bunch of 325lb OL that can move. There is way to much passing for guys like this to truly be effective.

Big is fine.

Big and slow is not. That is why I like Carl Nicks from the Saints. He has good mobility for a 335lb man.

by BigDinLA on Jan 7, 2011 3:37 PM CST up reply actions

Nicks would be great, there are actually some good OL on free agency this year

considering how Ive seen how succesful we can be in making a OL out of free agents, I would expect us to get 1 maybe 2 OL in free agency

Thanks for some great info again.

Hey Chia, you have become my source for college player info. Can you provide some quick insight on those NTs scheduled to go in the 3rd and 4th rounds? I would still like to have Rat and Bowen playing pass rush DEs, with Spears and Lissemore as backups, with Brent and a rookie (and some Ratliff) playing NT.

At this point, with Luck not in the draft and blue chippers likely not going to slide to #9, I am getting more and more interested with trading down to get best OT in the 1st and then an extra 2nd round pick so we can get Rahim and Cannon in the second round (best case scenario).

NT

actually not a deep class I will give some names I like
Kenrick Ellis from a small school Hampton, but has amazing speed and strength for a 340 pound guy 2nd-3rd rd pick
Phil Taylor from Baylor, is huge at 6’4 340 he transfered from Michigan and is a flat out beast
2nd-3rd pick, maybe 2nd because of the demand for NT’s now with all the 34 defenses
Ian Williams from Notre Dame, now I like this kid, he is one of the few players that stand out on Notre Dame, he is around 6’2 305 I think, a smaller build but is really strong from the point of attack 3rd-5th rd pick as of now
one more I like is this Pua kid from Stanford, I think his name is Pua, but when I got to watch Stanford he was pretty disruptive

Im a big Josh Brent fan, but I still push the get a bigger NT theory

by Archie Barberio on Jan 7, 2011 1:00 PM CST up reply actions

Jerrel Powe from Ole Miss can also play the nose.

He is 6’2 320lbs and has very good strength at the point of attack. FYI it is Fua from Stanford.

by BigDinLA on Jan 7, 2011 3:21 PM CST up reply actions

Taylor......

in the second would not upset me if it happened. IF WE GOT SOMETHING JUST UNREAL IN THE FIRST IN ONE OF THE OTHER CRITICAL NEED AREAS, IE STRONG SAFETY OR SERIOUS LOCKDOWN CORNER. But if we took them and then didn’t get a good noser, I would be chapped.

by reddmann10 on Jan 11, 2011 2:50 AM CST up reply actions

Ratliff, IMHO

needs to always be put in a position where he cannot be negated. You saw it last season, other teams knew it and they threw doubles and extra help all over him. That is just a waste. Taylor at nose, Ratliff at DE, Ware outside him, NO WAY they can repeat what they did this last season to Ratliff. My point about the topic all along.

by reddmann10 on Jan 11, 2011 2:58 AM CST up reply actions

Muhammad Wilkerson Jaiqwuan Jarrett

Temple is pumping out some talent this year
they also have a ILB Joseph and a G/T prospect too but I dont remember his name off hand

Jarrett imo is similar to Morgan Burnett, who I believe was a 3rd rd pick last year
we liked Burnett alot, we invited him to Valley Ranch like we did Dez Akwasi Lee etc
actually a good number of players we invited, we usually draft
Mike Jenkins wasnt invited because we thought he was going to be gone
Jarrett is going to be a good bargain, I would like him

Wilkerson can be what we wanted Canty to become, he is fast and strong, remember his name come draft time, he is going to fly up the charts at 6’5 305 he has the size speed and strength scouts salviate over

I still stand behind Ahmad Black, besides being a playmaker he is a leader, we need leaders
Black can play all over, slot, nickel, CB, FS, SS we like versatile players in the secondary

A guy I like is Janoris Jenkins, being he is a off corner (not the press style corners we drafted in the past) he really reminds me alot of Asante Samuel, who might be the best off corner in football with his ability to read the QB and jump routes
Jenkins might be a reach at 9th, but imo he is the 3rd best CB in the draft, idk he is a corner I really like if we move to more zone coverage

by Archie Barberio on Jan 7, 2011 1:06 PM CST reply actions

His numbers sound good, but small school guys always worry me.

It is hard to truly judge there ability because of the lack of talent they face. It is even worse for DL because they tend to face much weaker slower OL.

Still he played agianst big time schools.

Va Tech, FSU, Miami etc.. I will go check him out. We can always use motivated playmakers. That is the one thing I do like about small school guys. The chip the usually bring.

and for LB

1.Martez Wilson Illinois is a beast
2.Alex Wujciak from Maryland is the perfect Jack 34 ILB
3.Michael Morgan USC, has great speed and size
4.Mario Harve from Marshall, little undersized but good for a 3-4

then a smaller CB I like is Brandyn Thompson from Boise, alot like Scandrick similar in size and tough, both went to Boise

see I think deeper in the draft when you find some gems, you have a good draft

He did not play to his ability coming back from a serious knee injury. Hightower will earn himself a lot of money by going back for 2011. He is a great leader and just needs to find his aggression.

Me 2. I also think Barron will seriously improve his stock this season.

He and Saban have already said they are going to work very hard to improve his angles. He is already a beast against the run and if he improves his pass coverage a little he will be a multi-year probowler at SS.

He did that with an absolutely dominating front seven.

As such, it can be hard to distinguish whether that number is reflective of scheme or individual play. Regardless, what I do know is that in the biggest game of the year for Alabama he played terribly and misplayed a deep ball that played a huge part in Auburn’s comeback. As Raf said on his site, that just allows too many flashbacks to previous Cowboys safeties that had similar problems.

You do realize he played the entire 2nd half with a torn shoulder muscle right.

A lot of Barron’s issues this season were do to the people around him. He was the ONLY experienced secondary player on the team. He was trying to do too much and it showed. He has excellent football IQ and I promise next year you will change your tune. He will have 6+ picks and 80+ tackles. He is a complete S he just needs a little more polishing.

he is from a smaller school Temple but I think he is good enough to start right away

yeah I still say Rahim Moore 9th overall is a good fit
people say oh thats a HUGE reach, well is it? Moore is going to fly up the charts come the combine, putting himself into the 1st rd
S is one of the most important positions on the defense, and we clearly have not had a playmaker at S in a long time
plus taking Moore 9th overall, we can focus on OL the next 2 picks, 2nd and 3rd round
taking a OL in the 1st, means we would be scrambling to find a S in the later rounds
Rahim is a stud, I would love him 9th overall

by Archie Barberio on Jan 7, 2011 1:44 PM CST up reply actions

A small trade down would be ideal I think

I’m hoping that one of the big QBs is sitting there at 9 and we get big compensation to trade back a couple picks. Then we’re in a good spot to either draft one of the DE studs or starting thinking about Sherrod or Carimi. Then we have an extra 2 to grab a safety or linemen.

Check out my movie - Standards of Ethical Conduct

by cowboysuberfan on Jan 7, 2011 1:43 PM CST reply actions

yeah

I was opposed to trading down but since we have the 9th pick it might make alot of sense
I think I would much rather get a player later in the 1st (Allen Bailey Rahim Moore Sherrod Carimi) then get 2 in the 2nd (Cannon etc)
would fix 3 holes instantly on the team

now if we had 4th 5th 6th I wouldnt trade down because I have a shot at Peterson Amukamora Fairley, now we have no shot at either player. unless Jerry trades up
I wouldnt mind trading up for either player actually, we got Dez the same way last year

by Archie Barberio on Jan 7, 2011 1:46 PM CST up reply actions

I would go down no more than 2 for an extra 2 in this same draft.

Maybe down 3 depending upon who is still around to draft. Daddy needs a new pair of shoes.

Regarding Carimi and Moore, I like both players and feel that they can both contribute as soon as this coming season, but nine seems too high for either, and both will be long gone by 40.

Maybe deal down targeting one, then use the compensation to deal up for the other.

In that case we would still need some warm bodies to put at DE (assuming only one or none of our UFAs are retained). The argument could be made that the spot to best find five-tech guys are mid rounds.

He can run with the ball, he blocks fairly well, and he can catch. Not bad for a rookie. Good coaching and an OL upgrade will help him immensely I think. I wouldn’t cut him now, but I would see about some competition for him in TC. I’m all about competition for your spot on the roster!

Gronkster

The block missed around the world…but have you considered that our improved rushing game was not only an affect of JG’s improved playcalling and Wed. practice in pads? Could Gronk’s presonal improvement have also helped us run better? You realize he graded as a top 5 FB with PFF?

I don’t mind competition, but Gronk is getting it done and is still green. Another offseason could help him by leaps and bounds too.

I never said he was bad

I just said I will remember him getting my QB killed
Owen Maricec and Stanley Havili are going to be better fullbacks than the Gronk, thats my opinion
