...actually no they don't. Teams that suck are not competitive, have talent holes that will take years to fill, and are clueless when running their operations. The Cowboys are none of these.
I've been reading so many posts documenting how we should "rebuild" this team, but what we need to do is "polish" this team. A diamond isn't beautiful until you clean it up. I understand why so many fans are dissatisfied with the results of the past few seasons, but if you take an objective moment to evaluate this team, you will realize what many thought all along, this team is close...the key word for this team is "discipline"
This team has an inconsistent Offensive line. Even when they are healthy and playing like one of the best lines in the league, they'll have plays when they miss blocking assignments on key downs or even entire quarters where they are out of sync. I would forego a dominant line just to have a smart consistent one. It's pretty clear we need to fix the right side of our line. With no Offensive lineman slated to be worth more than a late 1st round value, it's likely we need to fix the line through free agency. Don't go after a big name, high priced free agent. Find some Kyle Kosiers. But most importantly, we need better coaching of our line. A competent line makes our offense very potent.
I dream of a Bears 85 or Ravens 01 defense, but the reality is that we are an Offense led team. That's how it has been since Romo took over and it doesn't look to change. We just need to have a disciplined squad. What discipline that we had was instilled by Parcells and over the past 3 years, Wade has eroded that to nothing. When you allow your players to do whatever they want without recourse, you deserve to be fired. Mike Jenkins epitomized this the most. Here's a guy coming off a well deserved Pro Bowl selection, and ended up playing so badly that more than a few fans wanted him cut. Jenkins can play. He has talent. What he didn't have was a coach that kept him humble and pushed him to be better. When he struggled, he didn't have a coach change the scheme to rebuild his confidence. Wade stayed to the bitter end with a man to man secondary because his players convinced him they could do it...they couldn't.
The problem with the Cowboys is not talent. Could we improve the talent? Sure, but we have had enough to be very competitive. We've squandered the last 3 years because we had a coach that did not understand the need for discipline. He was more concerned about being everyone's friend, but not their coach. I went back and watched HBO Hard Knocks' speech that Garrett made, and it was so prophetic. He let the players know that he played his best under tough coaches, and horrible under coaches that just kept telling him how good he was...
Yes, we need to continue drafting new and better talent every year, but more importantly, we need to establish a true sense of "discipline" on this team. Do this and we become dangerous, immediately.
