It is Week Seven of the NFL season, so here is the latest installment of What Will Garrett Do(WWGD)? This Week we will be Looking at the St Louis Rams, and one of the worst defenses in the League. But before we Start breaking down the Defense, here is the back story on this series:
In this Series of posts I am going to look at the Defenses that Dallas will be facing this year. I will give a Scouting report on each, then based off that I will try to set out what I think the Game plan that I think Garrett will employ. This will be based off my "Air Garrett" posts (Version 1,Version 2) where I set out this statement:
That is what I think "Air Garret" is all about. Attacking the Defense at it's weakest point. Study the opponents carefully. Find out where they are lacking defensively. I bet you will see alot of plays designed to target that area.
So on Sunday, October 23nd, 2011, The Cowboys(2-3) will be at home in Cowboys Stadium for the St Louis Rams(0-5) . Now with Felix and Nagy hurt, there are some questions that arise. However Demarco Murray looked pretty good in relief of Felix, and we might get Derrick Dockery back. So I doubt that there will be any significant changes. So lets Look at the St Louis Rams Defense....
Wow...I thought the Patroits Defense was Bad....the Rams basically are as bad if not Worse statistically. 30th in points @ 27.4 per game, 15th in passing yards @ 240.0 per game, and 32nd in rushing @ 163.0 per game... Just Wow. Now as we saw from the New England game, the stats can be misleading....So lets look at the past 5 games shall we?
| Performance vs. Rams and avg. Team performance |

So what do we see from this? Well the Rams Defense as been horribly inconsistent this year.
Week one they let the Eagles run roughshod on them (32-236-7.4).
The Giants get only 3.1 per attempt but Then Eli Manning looks like Aaron Rodgers on them(9.1 ypa).
When the Ravens play them they again allow 6.5 yards per rush, and allow Flacco to maintain his average ypa.
The Redskins have their way with their Secondary, to the tune of 6.9 ypa.
They play the Packers, They have decent success holding the Packers Passing game in check(6.4) yet again, the PAckers just run rampant on them(5.0).
So basically the Rams cannot stop the run if you have a good Passing game, nor can they stop the Passing game if you have a good Running Game. So lets look at a the players on the Defense for the Rams.
| Right Defensive End | James Hall | Eugene Sims | Robert Quinn |
| Left Outside Linebacker | Ben Leber | Chris Chamberlain | Jabara Williams |
| Left Defensive End | Chris Long | Eugene Sims | |
| Right Outside Linebacker | Brady Poppinga | Bryan Kehl | |
| Free Safety | Quintin Mikell | James Butler | Jermale Hines |
| Right Inside Linebacker | |||
| Left Cornerback | Justin King | Tim Atchison | |
| Strong Safety | Craig Dahl | Darian Stewart | |
| Right Cornerback | Bradley Fletcher | Al Harris | |
| Nose Tackle | |||
| Left Defensive Tackle | Fred Robbins | Darell Scott | |
| Middle Linebacker | James Laurinaitis | Josh Hull | |
| Right Defensive Tackle | Justin Bannan | Gary Gibson |
Well Their Top three Tacklers are here
| James Laurinaitis | 39 | 28 | 11 | 0.0 | 0 |
| Justin King | 28 | 25 | 3 | 1.0 | 1 |
| Quintin Mikell | 28 | 25 | 3 | 1.0 | 1 |
| Craig Dahl | 25 | 22 | 3 | 0.0 | 0 |
| Bradley Fletcher | 23 | 22 | 1 | 0.0 | 0 |
So Three of the Top 5 Tacklers on the Defense are in the Secondary With King, Dahl and Fletcher.....that is never a good thing....
| Chris Long | 10 | 9 | 1 | 3.0 | 0 |
That is their Top Defensive player in terms of Sacks....and he only has 3...In fact as a team St Louis only has 9 sacks Total on the year....definitely not good..in fact St Louis doesn't have a single player other than Long with more than 1 sack.
So lets Look in a little more detail at Chris Long, James Laurinaitis, and Justin King, arguably the three best players on the Defense in each Area.
Chris Long:
| Height: 6030 Weight: 272 40 Yrd Dash: 4.75 20 Yrd Dash: 2.70 10 Yrd Dash: 1.53 |

James Laurinaitis:

225 Lb. Bench Reps: Vertical Jump: Broad Jump: 20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.18 3-Cone Drill: 6.81 |

225 Lb. Bench Reps: Vertical Jump: 37 1/2 Broad Jump: 20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.34 3-Cone Drill: 6.91 |
So by Looking that these we can say that Long is Basically a quicker Anthony Spencer, Laurinaitis is Sean Lee, and King is Orlando Scandrick. So now that we have some Knowledge of Of the Rams Defense, What will Garrett do? Well here is how I see it. Run the Ball. Most will say that we need to pass it, but The Rams are a decent Passing Defense, However they sacrifice their run Defense to accomplish this. I would take a Cue out of Andy Reid's playbook. Send Miles, Dez and Witten on Deep routes, then drop it off to Murray/ Choice/Tanner. Especially Murray. If Felix was healthy, then him and Murray would have a Field day against this Defense. However Murray could have a "breakout game" this week To that end here is My "funky Formation" for the Week:
That's right no "funk" this week. Just Line up in and destroy the Rams.....
As Always I welcome any Comments and Criticisms, especially from any Rams Fans that come over....
Go Cowboys!
