Cowboys Injury Report: DeMarcus Ware Nursing Sore Back

Photo

Not exactly the news you want to see coming out of Valley Ranch. DeMarcus Ware wasn't practicing today, at least for the part the media saw. Ware had back spasms during the Patriots game and aggravated it at the end of the game.

Ware played through the discomfort, but he was shaken up after the Patriots' winning touchdown, aggravating his back on the ensuing extra point.

So far this doesn't sound like anything too serious, but that's just for now. We'll see how he progresses during the rest of the week. This may be just a 'veteran rest day' for a nagging but non-serious injury.

Also not practicing were Felix Jones, Jason Hatcher and Derrick Dockery. Felix is likely missing 2-4 weeks. Both Tony Fiametta and David Buehler dressed.

And guess who was taking the first-string snaps at left guard. None other than Montrae Holland. Of course, that was just during the media-viewed session at the beginning. I still would guess Kevin Kolwaski will get the first shot at starting on Sunday.

Since we're playing the worse team in football with their qb on one leg

maybe we should sit Ware out for this game and let him heal in order to chase Vick a week later.

Start Butler and let him cut his teeth in this game….I think he would perform very well.

I thought about the same thing

but i just don’t think we can afford to sit our best defensive player no matter who we are playing. I dont take any team for granted any more and they shouldn’t either.

They should treat it like they treat any injury. If he can play then let him play if he can’t then don’t. I would be really surprised if he didn’t play.

Who have we played down to this season?

I guess your refering to Arizona on Chistmas day last year. Other then that game, since Garrett has taken over the team has not lost a game where they were favored by 4 or more points.

The fact is we don’t know if this team plays down or not as they have not had the luxuary of facing inferior competition.

It isn’t just scheme or players, it is also match-ups and determination, so I agree you can’t look past any team, no matter their record (2-3 or whatever)

This team is in no position to take anyone for granted.

It’s not like we are 5-0. We have a losing record. Our last 11 games have all been decided by 4 points or less. It’s kind of crazy that we assuming a victory against any team, much less an easy win.

No he didn't call anyone out.

But he didnt have a good game against the Lions either. Don’t get me wrong, I think he has been really good for a 20 year old rookie. I just don’t think Costa has been that bad. Just my opinion. But no, he wasn’t very good against the Pats and I realize that. This oline just isn’t very good at run blocking period.

I'm with Chia here

It’s back to the drawing board with our interior O-linemen in the 2012 draft. Jerry blew it again.

I think Costa and Nagy are fine backups in this league. There’s nothing wrong with having good solid depth and that’s what I think those two players are. And I think the fact they brought in 2 guards when Nagy went down tells you everything you need to know about Arkin.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are your Sugar Bowl champions... and for the 7th year in a row Michigan still sucks.

by Blue Eyed Devil on Oct 19, 2011 4:45 PM CDT up reply actions

I don’t like this interior line, but it is not a blow it. They are a major upgrade in pass protection and a minor setback in run blocking. Last years version was not getting pushed back in the run game, but they often got beat to the gaps and produced similar results.

They made the right moves in getting ride of the expensive and slow players and filling in with what they could find. It was also a good move to priortize where they did.

There is more work to be done, but with as many holes as that 2009 team had they have done a good job in improving the roster.

by Trey, on Oct 19, 2011 4:54 PM CDT up reply actions

I think the interior of this line is worse than last years

Now Tyron Smith is a big upgrade over Marc Colombo, that helps a lot.

But Nagy-Costa-Kosier is worse than Kosier-Gurode-Davis. It’s about $10 million less expensive going this route, that helps. But it’s a worse line. They’re going to need to re-invest that money and draft picks in the interior of the O-line this off-season.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are your Sugar Bowl champions... and for the 7th year in a row Michigan still sucks.

I think Arkin was a wasted draft pick

What does it say about a 4th round draft choice when they start a 7th round supplemental pick ahead of him. Then, when that 7th round supplemental pick gets injured they bring in not one, but two guys off-the-street rather than let him sniff the active roster.

Dallas interior O-line drafting = bad.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are your Sugar Bowl champions... and for the 7th year in a row Michigan still sucks.

by Blue Eyed Devil on Oct 19, 2011 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions

It also says they got lucky with Nagy

If the draft were reconducted today he would go earlier. He has good footwork and did well with the metal part of line play as rookie. Assuming the injury does not prevent him working out he should be a solid NFL player once he gets a year or two of NFL strength conditioning.

I still hope they put a pick or two towards the interior line as I think this team really needs one road grader with good feet and those require late first or 2nd round picks.

by Trey, on Oct 19, 2011 5:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Colombo, Davis and Proctor also did well with the metal part of their play.

by One.Cool.Customer on Oct 19, 2011 5:09 PM CDT up reply actions

I am not sure what your point is.

Colombo was an effective Tackle until his body broke down. Davis was very effective at Guard until his foot speed went from slow to poderous and Cory Proctor is a never was who career highlight was he has a fantasy Rock and Roll reality show on VH1. What ever a fantasy reality show is.

I am not claiming that Nagy’s upside is as high as your first two, but he was a better player a week into his first training camp then Corry Protor was at any point in his career.

by Trey, on Oct 19, 2011 5:20 PM CDT up reply actions

I really can't stand this line "once he gets a year or two of NFL strength conditioning"

Do people really think it’s that easy? I heard it about Sam Young and Phil Costa last year. Like that’s just how it works. Draft a guy anywhere, hell it’s probably smarter to not even draft interior O-linemen at all and just get a UDFA! If he’s smart enough to stand in front of a D-lineman with his butt back and hands up then all it takes is 3 months of weight training and, bam, instantly Jeff Saturday or Nick Mangold.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are your Sugar Bowl champions... and for the 7th year in a row Michigan still sucks.

by Blue Eyed Devil on Oct 19, 2011 5:51 PM CDT up reply actions

No one is saying that BED

BUt if you look at what is Hurting Nagy(his overall strength) would you not agree that a year or two in a NFL training room, could take him from below average to above average?

The same with Costa and Arkin….they are not getting beat due to poor technique or lack of agility, but simply because they lack the strength to back up their technique.

Here’s a theoretical play from 2010: Snap. Tony takes 7 step drop. Tony looks left at Miles, who is doubled, and looks right to where Roy Williams should be…but instead sees Colombo on his back and a Defensive End foaming at the mouth jumping over Marc’s carcass. Tony proceeds to run like hell and look for Witten

by I am Ironman!!! on Oct 20, 2011 12:15 AM CDT up reply actions

Even more to the point

Id say akin was getting beat do to technique and footwork. He is a stronger player then Nagy.

I don’t think a year or two is a cure all, but lineman (both sides) do tend to get stronger their first two years in the league, but bad feet don’t tend to become good feet.

So when a rookies main problem is strength, but he shows good promise in other areas I think there is better reason to be optimistic about development then if the problem is he is an idiot or a below average NFL athlete.

I think a guard could be your Derrick Newton/ Willie Smith type of guy.

Get an athletic OL who played tackle and switch him to guard.

Guards are cheap and not that hard to find.
Premium picks ought to be used to get pass rushers and shut down corners.

Don’t spend your high picks on guards. Tyron Smith was an exception but usually it is not a good idea to use your high picks on the offensive line in general.

At least you two

Didn’t have to walk through the lots of Gillette Stadium with Pats fans calling you out (i was geared up).

And immediately after the touchdown you didn’t have to have the old guys in front of you (season ticket holders) ask you to take their picture, cause it was one of them’s last game ever and season ticket holder for 96 years and I’m moving to Florida and blah blah blah blah.

Inside I was like FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF YYYYYYYYYOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But then I took the picture. Sigh.

That was their MO for 2006-2008

In 2008 they lost big even to weak teams such as Jacksonville.

Do we really know if this Jason Garrett coached team will continue that trend as they have not had any games verse weak teams. We will know by the end of the Thanskgiving game; if the Rams Seahawks and Dolphines take this time to the wire then we will know that the old demon is still haunting Dallas to go along with the 4th Quarter meltdown demon.

that, my friend, is the RIGHT issue

I liked Tanner this past preseason, but a rotation of Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton, Gale Sayers, OJ Simpson, Jim Brown, and Eric Dickerson couldn’t run consistently behind this OL. I’m not holding my breath that any of DeMarco Murray, Tashard Choice, and/or Tanner Smith could.

You're crazy, but I also think you might be right.

After all, being crazy does not mean you’re stupid. And I have been wondering the same thing. Based on what I saw in the preseason, I think Tanner might be that hard hitting back for short yardage situations.

But the fact I agree with you might argue against the not being stupid thing.

According to this Garrett comment....

they feel Arkin has plateaued. There’s still hope for him though: http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/cowboys/post/_/id/4685334/looks-like-redshirt-season-for-david-arkin

So what has happened to Arkin?

"He is someone who did some good things early on," coach Jason Garrett said. "As we got going he leveled off a little bit. He is a young guy who is working hard to do things well. He is from a small school. I think the biggest thing for him is he didn’t have an offseason. He comes to training camp. It’s a big leap for all the young guys. And particularly if you’re coming from a small school it’s that much more difficult.
We do think he has the right stuff physically and mentally as he goes forward. He is certainly in a developmental mode right now. We feel some of the guys are a little further along in their ability to play for now."

He is a rookie OL from a small school. Almost no OL is a decent rookie starter, especially with the lockout.

Just because Raf has his opinion doesn't mean I have to agree with it

I respect the heck out of Raf and I read the article. I have watched every game we have played this season atleast 2 times and I just have not seen a game where I said “damn Costa sucks”. Not even the Redskins game. I know he had the snapping problems that game but his blocking was more than fine.

Look, I know he didn’t play well against the Pats. And im not saying he is going to be All Pro. I just don’t think he’s that bad. I’ve gotten in a habbit of watching every play of every player on the oline during everything. Literally every play. My wife thinks im crazy because I sit there with my remote hitting play, rewind, play rewind, over and over until i have watched every single play on the oline. I just like to see how each player is doing. And to be completely honest the one guy that worries me the most is Free.

what kind of tv do you have Paul?

We are in the market. Right now we gotta a little old fashioned rear projection tv and well, its just so lame-o. Been reading sounds like plasma is a better choice because unless you’re directly in front of an LCD tv the picture just isn’t right. But I want to be able to do like so many of you do the rewind thing. I don’t watch the oline during the game unless there’s an obvious mistake. Thanx for any advice.

I'm sure he has a DVR

a digital video recorder.

TV providers (cable/satellite) have them. They can also be purchased, but most people get them from their provider.

Think “digital VCR”. They have PIP (picture-in-picture) because they have at least two independent tuners built in. You can record at least one show while watching something else at the same time.

But, the handiest feature is – you can pause and rewind live TV, as you would with recorded programs. Live TV has about a one-hour buffer. So, he can pause and rewind and be almost an hour behind live without a problem. Of course, then, you can fast-forward through commercials, halftimes, and other extended breaks.

In my profile, I state that this is how I watch most Cowboys games. I rarely sit down and watch live. I record it on the DVR. Then, later (even before the game is over), I will click to begin watching my recorded program (the game). Depending on how exciting the game is, and how much detail I want to watch, I can watch every play in the game in an hour or two.

by hookerhome on Oct 20, 2011 8:39 AM CDT up reply actions

Don't waste your money on plasma.

I just bought a LCD and the picture is great from any angle. For the same $, you can get a bigger LCD than plasma. Just make sure to get a 1080i resolution because they still sell 720i and the picture is not as good.

And if you have kids who play video games they can ruin a plasma TV by accidentally leaving the game console on, even if you turn the TV off. It burns the image into the plasma screen and there is nothing that can fix it.

Raf didn't say Costa sucks, he said that he had doubts about his ability to start a C long term.
He should not be overpowered consistently. On Sunday, he was, and the type of player overwhelming Costa raises doubts in my mind about his long-term prospects in the pivot. …..
To be fair, this is Albert Haynesworth, who can embarrass lots of good interior linemen, even on a bad knee….
Is the problem youth, or is Costa in over his head?

He also mentioned in those play by play reviews that the LB that was beating him so bad was getting a running start at him as the play clock was going down to pretty well 0. So he had a head of steam built up as Costa snapped the ball and straightened up to try and block a guy running at him full tilt.
