Player performance reviews
As the year nears its conclusion, at work I am forced to do performance appraisals for the people who report to me. That is not a lot of fun, but I thought it would be fun to appraise the performance of the Cowboys. The scale is 1- 5 with 1 being the best, reserved for the very top performers and 5 being folks who really ought to find another line of work, the grade is based entirely on my perception of actual performance versus anticipated, so it gets a little confusing, let’s start on offense:
QB Romo – 3 Average performance. Coaching point – You have tried to do everything for everyone, things are developing to the point you just have to do your job. We need your gambler spirit sometimes, but remember Kenny Roger’s advice “know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em”.
RB Jones – 3 Average performance. Coaching point – We have not used you correctly since you were a rookie, take a seat we’ll call you for about 15-20 touches per game, be ready.
RB Murray – 2 Above average. Coaching point – You show a lot of potential, we will split the job between you and Mr. Jones in the hope that you both stay healthy and explosive.
FB Fiametta – 3 Average. Coaching point – You show some promise, perhaps you are Moose Lite, but we’ll have to see some more before upping your grade.
WR Bryant – 3 Average . Coaching point – Get healthy and stay healthy, we are a lot better off without the extra yard and with you on the next play. Sky is the limit, but you got to be on the field to be a star.
WR Austin – 3 Average. Coaching point – Stay healthy. When you are on you are Miles Awesome. We have very high standards for you performance that is why you are rated a 3.
WR Ogletree – 5 Ineptitude. Coaching point – Find someone else for whom to suck. We thought you had some potential but you just don’t get it.
WR Robinson – 2 Above average. Coaching point – You have exceeded expectations for someone coming in off the street, keep it up.
TE Witten – 2 Above average. Coaching point – You are consistent, a leader, and always give max effort, you do have athletic limitations though, wish we could take your heart and mind and put it in Bennett’s body.
TE Bennett – 4 Poor performance. Coaching point – You have all the talent in the world but you just don’t know how to use it, time for a change of scenery.
TE Phillips – 3 Average performance Coaching point – Stick with Witten, do everything he does.
T Free – 4 Poor performance. Coaching point – Something is wrong, you still give great effort, but you are getting beat far too much, you seem a little slower than last year, get healthy and get going.
T Smith – 2 Above average. Coaching point – You have performed better than we could have anticipated, I remember Larry Allen getting thrown around as a rook, you’ve had a couple of bad moments, but all in all you have done well, keep it up.
G LG – 4 Poor performance. Coaching point – Mostly Nagy but a few others have manned this spot, up and down performance. I can’t have your butt in Romo’s face two seconds after he gets the ball, maybe Lumpy will figure it out.
G Kosier – 4 Poor performance. Coaching point – The rooks getting pushed around a little I get, but you, got to have more from you. Smith is doing ok, worry about your job.
C Costa – 4 Poor performance. Coaching point – Same stuff on your butt in Romo’s face, can’t happen. You have to figure this out, or we are toast.
DE Spears – 2 Above average. Coaching point – Fire and determination, pressure on QBs on occasion, playing in the backfield from time to time, good work keep it up.
DE Coleman – 3 Average. Coaching point – You’ve had a couple of good and couple of bad moments, keep doing what you do.
DE Hatcher – 3 Average. Coaching point – Get healthy, when healthy you have been much better than anticipated.
NT Ratliff – 2 Above average. Coaching point – Dominant when you choose to be, could pick your spots a little better.
DL Brent and Lissemore – 3 Average. Coaching point – Your job is to be average more often so Rat can be dominant when it is important.
LB Ware - 1 Awe Inspiring. Coaching point – God has blessed you with freakish ability, use it wisely, we’ll move you around you do the rest.
LB Spencer – 2 Above average. Coaching point – You do whatever frees up Ware to do his thing, it is not appreciated but you do it well, most of the time.
LB Butler – 3 Average. Coaching point – You have had some flashes in a few spots, I know you don’t get a whole lot of reps, but make ‘em all count.
LB Lee – 1 Awe inspiring. Coaching point – I did not see this one coming, thought you would be good, but the level of performance seen so far has been dominant.
LB Brooking and James – 3 Average. Coaching point – You are nearing the end, you are handling this stage of your careers with dignity and true professionalism, you are leaders.
CB Jenkins – 2 Above average. Coaching point – Last year, you stank out loud, your effort was poor and your results were worse. This year 180 degree opposite, your effort is to be lauded, playing through injuries and getting good results, very proud of your turnaround.
CB Newman – 3 Average. Coaching point – Stay healthy, good results when on the field.
CB Scandrick – 3 Average. Coaching point – Stay healthy, good results when on the field.
S Sensabaugh – 3 Average. Coaching point – Much improved over last year when you too stank out loud. You were very much missed in the Detroit game when you went out, which makes me think you might deserve a little better grade, but life is not fair.
S Elam – 2 Above average. Coaching point – Great leadership in getting unit lined up in complicated schemes, some really good play, tackles well, has a presence.
P and K – 2 Above average. Coaching point – Not going to spend a lot of time grading kicker performance and glad I don’t have to, you two rock.
I didn’t grade everyone, just those who have played a little more. Hopefully the O-line grades improve, I think they will. Long time lurker, first time poster, let me know your thoughts.

Love the post
It resonates because this IS performance appraisal time.
But really dude, who writes “awe inspiring” on a performance review?
:-)
Post more!
"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
Totaly do not agree 5Blings.
You have to play this game like somebody just hit your mother with a two-by-four. Dan Birdwell. Oakland Raiders
How do you want to be rememberd. Go out there and play every play like it is your last play. Be remembered as the person you want to be for the rest of your life. Spike Dykes, Midland Lee and Texas Tech Coach.
Ohhhhhhh, LOL, NOW I SEE!!!
B26, in the corporate world of crap that Docchain and many others (including yours truly) are imprisoned in, the October/ November timeframe is generally considered the time of year management personnel to write formal performance reviews for anyone who directly reports them.
THAT, my friend, is why I said this is performance appraisal time. It’s the case for all corporate shlubs, but of course the season is still not over and in now way is it time to give a full accounting of their play.
Make sense?
"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
Dude WTF are you talking about?
I wrote the fit reps in August, well before the Army boards. Never worked for a corporation. For me it does not make sense bud. WTF are you talking about? Did you drink to much Scotch like me"

I know 5Blings all the sudden had a revalation from his God
5lings wants to try and talk some corprate conspiracy than goes off the deep As an ex Army Officer, I still see the world as a pretty good place and do not find bad things behind every bush.

Uhhh, yeah, ummm...
… if you’re here for us two, answer the question posed about that chain. Know it may be tough to decipher for some, though I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to. I’ll clarify the riddle of it if it needs to be clarified. Just trying not to step on your toes inadvertently.
On the hate stuff, I hate few things, least of all bosses, family, etc. Strong dislike and intolerance for stupidity, BS, ignorance, cruelty, but hate, nahhh, thaat’s reserved for… – foes. j/k. And not.
Cry 'Havoc!'
I think you missed my point, though
I liked Docchain’s post because of the format.
You said something very ambiguous. I still have no clue what you’re disagreeing with/all worked up about.
Can you please provide clarity by answering my question below?
"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
the world is a pretty bad place

Sorry, but this review is pretty much how I would grade the last game.
It is no where near the full season.

I think you can argue the ratings
…which is kinda what the poster is inviting us to do.
But don’t let your disagreement with the assessment take away from the very unique thought process used to lay his out.
"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
Unique?
It’s personally-biased, standard corporate-procedured claptrap, though that may be my rebel HR-nightmare ways speaking. Something about being a “problem child”, not a “team player”, some such nonsense.
Aside from which, from a human resource perspective, it’s obvious Mr Witten and Mr Ware are the stellar examples of the type of long-term employee performance which are expected and will be rewarded in this enterprise. Mr Lee has yet to earn such accolades, though he appears to be one of our more promising recent hires, at present.
Methinks the poster simply wished to dodge or forestall the drudgery of such mundane corporate paperpushing and sought to gird himself to the task by beginning on a cheerier, more pleasant practice run. Not that I noticed the use of the “forced to do” phrasing in his introduction to the piece.

Dude, you hate your boss
Tans go ahead hate your boss. tans. it is ok to call him every name in the book.
Blings you are your own boss. I love you bud, but there are things you are so wrong on with this and a few others.
Have to ask if as an alt you are James Simmons or CISA?

Not sure where you are coming from but something has you all twisted up about this post.
What’s the deal?
"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
Ye4 Blings I have a problems with the posters ups and downs as it goes with wins and losses
I use my eyes to evalute the team, just not stats. I break down the performanve on the field.
You know I point to the good and bad. When I look at mechanics, I give an fair view.

So you don't like his ratings
You think they are way too low. OKAY. On BTB, everyone gets a chance to call them like they see them (or in some people’s cases, blockquote other people’s stats/views and parrot others’ viewpoints…you know who you are!)
But why the anger? Why not just counter with some points to the contrary and move the discussion forward?
"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
Just trying to have some fun with this.
This was my view of actual performance versus anticipated, my personal view, with all its imperfections. Would love to hear some other views.
As I said, I thought your format was funny and apropos
"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
Asked and answered
“Aside from which, from a human resource perspective, it’s obvious Mr Witten and Mr Ware are the stellar examples of the type of long-term employee performance which are expected and will be rewarded in this enterprise. Buried in what was to be interpreted as a humorous reply to a colleague, taking the devil’s advocate teeter to his totter, but might’ve been misinterpreted by some, possibly yourself included. Simplifying, Witten/Ware get 1’s, Lee a 1.5-2, since managerially I’m influenced by more that a single term’s effort and results. Aberration’s are not to be rewarded or decried, depending on their swing. For one, it leads to Jerryesque contracts. For the other, failng in managerial responsibility to encourge and guide in extracting the fullest potential of the resource.
Your assessment was a welcome and creatively-presented overview. If, for nothing other than the chuckles and nods it gave my day, it was rec’d. Despite the seeming misinterpretation of my “tone” in earler replies. Maybe I should go all smiley faces, winkies, the works. Nahhh, why make it easy.

As I have said before, you're an acquired taste, my friend
First-time posters probably seek professional help from Swedish psychotherapists upon reading (and trying to decode) your comments for the first time.
"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
No swedish psychs needed
Besides a minor Oedipal complex, not sure there us much I need help with. The post spurred some good conversation, the topic got a little off in unexpected territory, but good conversation nonetheless.
She's the one in Blings' av pic
Mind changer?
btw, how can I fault too much when there’s a “Stick with Witten, do everything he does” in there? Guess someone’d have to know my take on the man for that to make much sense.
Cry 'Havoc!'
I like your perspective...
and, as I said, KEEP POSTING!!!
"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
Fail position has been lg.
I said before the season that I thought Nagy would be a career backup. Nothing wrong with that. He is just too light in the behind to be a full time starter at guard. Short of signing Ben Grubbs in the off season we really need to address the guard postion in the draft once again. A little more beef is necessary.
Imo Costa is a short term fill in until we can get a better center. I look for Kowalski to take over that position next year. His longer arms allows him to be better in pass blocking.
Why all the negativity ? LOL
Jerry is the end all in Dallas.
Woulda been much more effective...
Why all the negativity ?
… without the LOL. Imagine the consternation in those trying to figure it, esp source considered, aside from those that’d jump without doing so. ‘cuz it gave me one of them TLA’s reading that.

thats why I have a DeCastro mancrush

too harsh on bennett. lessimore has played better than expected imo and you are implying that ratliff takes plays off? other than that seems fine
+1 on lissy
PFF absolutely loves him in no snaps, so there’s got to be something there.
