The Cowboys have a talented D. A lot of that credit is going to Rob Ryan. While I think he has really given them a spark, I do think he is getting overly credited; let's not forget that we were the second ranked team D just two years ago. It could be argued that last year was an aberration. Phillips, while a bad HC, is still a very good DC.
So, why am I bringing RR down when I am absolutely high on him? Because I feel like his likeable personality, the credit he will get for our D (which he does deserve, even if it's a little inflated, especially for the scheme), and the fact his twin brother is a proven HC (yes some people will automatically think he must be able to do it too just because they're twins) will get him offers after this year. I'm not sure he will turn them down.
I hear people say "well, we can just promote Eberflus" and are all happy and nonchalant, but why wouldn't he go with RR to be his DC? He absolutely would. We would be left with a talented D that is in its prime age (possibly at the back end for some major parts) that has to learn a third scheme in three years. That is scary.
Hopefully we can retain RR for another year or two, or at least convince Eberflus to anchor down here and not follow RR again. I think he could continue a Ryan type system that wouldn't bring a lot of change. Jerry needs to pay someone more than they're "worth," or 2012 might be a nightmare.
