Death of the trade?

I've been thinking about three things that surprised me this off-season (and season). One is the release of talented, productive, experienced players. The second is the release of many of our draft picks. The third is the pick-up of guys who were just lying around--guys who are contributing, and contributing HUGE, for our team.

Choice--gone, without a trade. RW--gone, without a trade. Half of our O-line cut, without a trade. O.K., maybe we knew were weren't getting anything for Columbo. But with several of these players, almost everyone on this board expected us to get SOME sort of low draft pick or pick up another backup player.  All of them  were cut straight out.

Don't get me wrong--I think this was the right choice, and we didn't drop the ball, and there was nothing to block the moves we made. (Wink, wink.) However, I am still struck that with all of these moves we didn't pick up anything. Zero. Squat.

On the other hand--what would we have wanted to pick up? Maybe a kicker to help out Buehler? We picked up one of the best kickers the Boys have had--without a trade. Maybe an extra big body on the O-line? We picked up a good one, AND one of the ones we had just cut--all without a trade.

Or we could have traded for a late-round draft pick. But wait--we don't really need late-round draft picks, do we? We used them on a potential third wide receiver, a potential extra corner, and a much-needed fullback. We threw away the corner and fullback and aren't using (yet, anyway) the WR. But we picked up, for nothing, the best fullback we've seen since the Moose. We picked up, for nothing, the best third WR I've seen forever. We picked up, for nothing, someone who could give us very serviceable depth at corner.

None of these things is completely unprecedented. But I had a question for those of you who've followed the Boys longer. Have you ever seen us go this long without any trading? Have you ever seen so many faces cut--faces who had been seeing significant playing time for us--without getting anything for them? And, finally, have you ever seen such incredible value just picked up from the Waiver, undrafted and untraded?

Is this season an anomaly, or is something changing in pro football?
