Week 9 in the NFL. Seahawks Week. If you notice the difference in the Title this week, it is for a very good reason. I have been Focusing on Jason Garrett the OC all year. This week will be different. This week I want to look at some roster moves that Garrett the HC needs to make. Due to a time crunch and and other factors(I need a little more time to get my tables in Order) WWGD is taking a haitus for a week. I hope to have the new post up late next week for the Buffalo game. Till then here are some roster moves that I think Garrett and Rob need to consider:
Move #1: Release Buehler- I admit that I have been a Buehler supporter in the past. His combination of athleticism and Kicking strength made me really like the guy. However Bailey has more than surpassed him on the field, and with the injuries to Sean Lee and Matt McBriar, there just isn't room for him. Unless he can punt the ball 60 yards....
Move# 2: Activate Orie Lemon from the Practice Squad. Why? Because we need the depth. James and Brooking are both done. I doubt that either one of them are Cowboys next year, and with Sean Lee injured, having them on the field for extended periods of time is a bad thing. While I am Excited that Carter should get some extended playing time, he is not going to step in and play 50+ snaps in his second Game. which means James and Brooking on the field more. Now why Orie Lemon? Here is why:
| Height: 6006 Weight: 242 40 Yrd Dash: 4.87 20 Yrd Dash: 2.73 10 Yrd Dash: 1.68 |
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 27 Vertical Jump: 30 Broad Jump: 09'05" 20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.40 3-Cone Drill: 7.45 |
Dates: 03/09/11 Height: 6006 Weight: 242 40 Yrd Dash: 4.87 20 Yrd Dash: 2.84 10 Yrd Dash: 1.73 |
225 Lb. Bench Reps: Vertical Jump: 31 Broad Jump: 09'05" 20 Yrd Shuttle: 3-Cone Drill: |
Compare that to Bradie James:
| Height: 6023 Weight: 242 40 Yrd Dash: 20 Yrd Dash: 10 Yrd Dash: |
225 Lb. Bench Reps: Vertical Jump: 32 1/2 Broad Jump: 09'05" 20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.54 3-Cone Drill: 7.53 |
Dates: Height: 6023 Weight: 242 40 Yrd Dash: 20 Yrd Dash: 10 Yrd Dash: |
225 Lb. Bench Reps: Vertical Jump: Broad Jump: 20 Yrd Shuttle: 3-Cone Drill: |
Now Lemon is slightly shorter than James (6-2 vs 6-0) however they do have the same playing weight @ 242. That means that we can compare them with out any issues do to weight
Speed: N/A- James did not run the 40 in his Combine, but Lemon did put up a 4.87 40 with a 2.73 & 1.68 20/10 yard splits. IF you want to compare that to other players, it is below average, with most ILB's running low 4.7's. which given the NFL's obsession with the 40, is one reason why Lemon went undrafted...
Strength: N/A- Again James didn't do the bench press drill, however @ 27 reps, Lemon is definitely above average in that dept. as most ILB's tend to bench 20-25 reps
Explosiveness: Now we get to the Comparision part. Lemon nearly matches James in the Vertical and does match him in the broad jump. So Lemon and Bradie are close to equal there.
Agility: Here is where Lemon has a clear Advantage over James posting a 4.40 SS and a 7.45 3 cone drill Lemon should be an upgrade in coverage
So what do we have in Lemon? Bradie James 2.0. remember until this Year James has been one of the better players on the defense, leading the team in Tackles for 6 years straight. One of the HIs Biggest knocks was his Coverage ability, and Lemon should be slightly better at that.
Move #3. Get Alex Albright more involved. Why? because he could become the next D-Ware. Don't believe me? Here you go:
Alex Albright:
| Height: 6044 Weight: 254 40 Yrd Dash: 4.86 20 Yrd Dash: 2.71 10 Yrd Dash: 1.60 |
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 22 Vertical Jump: 36 Broad Jump: 10'04" 20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.03 3-Cone Drill: 6.98 |
Demarcus Ware:
| Height: 6040 Weight: 251 40 Yrd Dash: 4.56 20 Yrd Dash: 2.71 10 Yrd Dash: 1.62 |
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 27 Vertical Jump: 38 1/2 Broad Jump: 10'02" 20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.07 3-Cone Drill: 6.85 |
Here is the break down:
Size: Both Players are roughly the same size @ 6-4 ~250 lbs, so it is we are comparing apples to apples here
Speed: While D-Ware does hold the advantage in the 40, Albright does match him in both the 10 and 20 yard splits so both are roughly equal there
Strength: Here Ware does hold a strong advantage, posting 27 reps(which BTW Lemon Matched...just saying) to Albrights 22. As a DE that is poor, but as an LB that is just low side average(remember 20-25 reps is average for LB's)
Explosiveness: Here Albright Effectively Ties Ware. While He posted a 2.5 inch less Vertical, Albright beat Ware's Broad jump by 2 inches. So they are both very explosive
Agility: Again Albright Performs well. While not matching Ware in the 3-cone drill( posting a .13 sec slower time) Albright holds a slight advantage over Ware in the SS. So while not as good as Ware at "turning the Corner" (though few players are) he could actually be just as good at coverage and run Support, while offering better Pass rushing than Butler and/or Spencer neither of which dropped below 7.10 in the 3-cone, nor 4.4 in the SS.
In Fact, Move #4: Actually look to move Butler to ILB, as he has comparable measurables to both James and Lemon:
| Height: 6022 Weight: 248 40 Yrd Dash: 4.76 20 Yrd Dash: 2.79 10 Yrd Dash: 1.62 |
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 24 Vertical Jump: 33 Broad Jump: 09'05" 20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.40 3-Cone Drill: 7.21 |
Dates: 03/13/09 Height: 6022 Weight: 248 40 Yrd Dash: 4.72 20 Yrd Dash: 2.72 10 Yrd Dash: 1.60 |
225 Lb. Bench Reps: Vertical Jump: 33 Broad Jump: 09'11" 20 Yrd Shuttle: 3-Cone Drill: |
I won't Break the stats down, but Butler could definitely move inside, assuming that he could get the mental part down.
Now I know that Measurables aren't everything, otherwise Jason Williams would be an All Pro...However I do believe that if these players have the right attitude, then they should be very good players for Dallas in the future. These are just a couple of things that I wouldn't mind seeing from Dallas in the near future is all.
