Ask The Phinsider

Hi Cowboys fans and Happy Thanksgiving.
This is the opportunity to ask questions of Dolphins fans from thephinsider.com about our thoughts on the team and the upcoming game.  I personally look forward to these civil and educational conversations between opposing team’s fans.

One caveat.  I do not represent all phins fans, nor am I the most knowledgeable fan, but I will try my best.  Fortunately, some other Dolphins fans will usually make their way over.

I look forward to your questions, and just to kick things off with a few points.

Star-divide

1) The Miami Cowboys – many phins fans are a bit bitter about your team because they see our FO, made up of former Cowboys, as having excavated your 2nd team players and trash from our HC, to various O-lineman.  Not all of us feel that way, but you will recognize some of the names and, in some cases, you may wonder why they are starting.

2) Are the phins for real? – after starting 0-7, we are now on a 3 game win streak.  Many fans see this game as our test.  Yes, we beat 3 bad/injured teams, but we beat them the way good teams should.  Convincingly.  But, it may just mean we are the best of the bad teams.  If we can manage to protect our QB against guys like Ware and Ratliff, cover guys like Witten and Bryant, that will answer a lot of questions.

3) Our biggest fear – Your OLBs versus a former cowboy named Marc Colombo.  He is a revolving door.  Also, our LBs vs. Witten.  It could be a long day.  With Jake Long finally healthy, Ware vs. Long should be fun to watch, but I expect Ware is salivating for both Turkey and for Colombo.

4) Rookie to watch – Charles Clay at FB/TE.  With Fasano (former Cowboy) probably staying in to block, Clay will have to step up.  He has shown real talent blocking out of the FB position and has made some clutch catches.  Also, Mike Pouncey vs. Jay Ratliff.  Pouncey has been playing very well at C.  This will be a big test for him.

Ryan will move him to Columbo’s side. Sorry. haha.

Do you think you’ll win?

Cowphins!

Happy with Bush?

Whats your take on the Orton deal? Still want a QB or is Moore the guy?

What coach do you want next year?

Good Questions

1) Bush has been playing much better recently. I think the best way to answer your question is less about whether we are happy with Bush as whether we are happy with the way he is being used. The answer was no for the first several weeks, and yes more recently. Getting him into space, running outside the tackles etc.

2) There was a lot of debate about it in the offseason. Personally, I am glad we didn’t pay the asking price. We need a QB for the future, not an overpriced journeyman. In hindsight, it looks like we made the right move. I like Moore, but he hasn’t shown he is capable of carrying the team. I would like to draft a young guy and see if we can win when we put the game on his shoulders. If Moore shows us he can do that over the next six games, I say keep him.

3) I am torn. If we can get Cohwer, he would bring some experience and a winning history. That being said, part of me wants to bring in an exciting young coach.

Moore

QB Moore fits into your theme of the Cowfins (funny). He started as an undrafted prospect with the Cowboys at training camp his first year, but was cut in the hopes of being snuck onto the practice squad. Carolina dashed those plans. Good luck….in week 13.

As always, the last 5 minutes of your life are non-refundable.

Strange answered this perfectly

2) When most PhinFans heard that Denver wanted an early draft pick we said absolutely not. Moore has been playing very well and is under contract through next year.

3) I agree with tanstaafl, I would prefer a younger, more unknown coach. Not a big fan of any of the big name guys like Cowher, Gruden, Billick.

I happen to think that Cowher

is a lot like Barry Switzer in that he is what I call a “Walk around Manager” and that those types of Coaches are not where the value is.

Of all the cliches, the one that is the most correct IMHO is….“The game is won in the trenches” and that means the OC and the DC are the two most important hires because they are the ones moving the chess peices on the board called the football field and unless the HC is also either an OC or DC, then you would be wasting your money on a guy like Cowher that is in my opinion….way over-rated.

Go for a HC that will bring something other than walking around putting up signs that say…“Don’t eat the cheese” and would have had a hard time being the HC on a SB winning team if not for a guy named Belichick who was his DC…which again is one of the two most important factors in winning.

actually Coach

Belichick was the DC under Parcells

Dick Lebeau is the DC for the Steelers

Here’s a theoretical play from 2010: Snap. Tony takes 7 step drop. Tony looks left at Miles, who is doubled, and looks right to where Roy Williams should be…but instead sees Colombo on his back and a Defensive End foaming at the mouth jumping over Marc’s carcass. Tony proceeds to run like hell and look for Witten

(Parcells)

I was directing it at Parcells. It was Parcells that went around at Dallas putting up mouse traps and posters saying “dont eat the cheese” and I should have have named him instead of just alluding to him.

so...

1. I never thought I would see Bush as a feature back like they were saying when they brought him here. But they have finally figured out how to use him and he has been quite a feature back.
2. Orton sucks. I have to say I was one of the ones that wanted him, but I really thought it was in poor taste to cheer for Orton at a preseason practice and felt sorry for Henne. I was on the “suck for Luck” bandwagon, but we ruined that with 3 wins. I can’t believe it but there is a slight possibility that playoffs are not out of the question even after dropping the first 7 games. The defense we thought we would see week one have finally showed up and started to play hard. If we win out and a few other teams give us some help we could wind up in the playoffs. I would love to see that happen, because it has been a really long time for us.
3. Depends. 3 weeks ago I would have said, get rid of Ireland and Sparano, and bring in Rob Chudzinski. If we wind up going 9-7 given the way we have won the last few games, it would be really hard for me to say that either one has to go. Our draft classes are starting to break out. Odrick, Misi, Vontae Davis, Sean Smith, Mike Pouncey, Daniel Thomas, Charles Clay, Clyde Gates, and Jimmy Wilson are all looking good. I am starting to come around with Ireland too. We will see what happens. But if we go back into a tailspin and wind up winning just enough games to miss out on a franchise QB, we will need to clean house and go after Chudzinski.

A few things IMO

1 – We are healthy. Some of our better players like Jake Long and Carlos Dansby were clearly hampered by injuries.
2 – Conditioning. Our guys were not prepared post-lockout for this season. Especially younger contributors were sidelined.
3 – Sparano is a slow starter in general, but he wasn’t helped by “Harbaugh-gate” in the offseason. He needed time get the players playing for him 100%
4 – We are actually playing 60 minutes of football. We have lead at some point in most of our games.
5 – Moore is getting in sync with his receivers.
6 – our redzone playcalling has improved. Also, I think Moore is more accurate than Henne on the shorter field in the RZ.
7 – The level of our competition has been lower

man i knew Moore was the man..

Do u guys think u might draft a qb with Moore stepping up?

Also watching Gross-man slice up Dallas secondary do you feel confident Moore can? Besides Marshall and Bush what other WR threats do u guys have?

by lostar2009 on Nov 22, 2011 7:43 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

I am less high on Moore than you are

Can’t complain, but I would like a guy who can really carry the team. Someone who Ds have to account for specifically in their gameplan. I like him better than Henne though (not everyone here is in agreement).

As to WR threats, they have been quiet this season (part of the problem), but going on past years we have two solid guys in Davone Bess and Brian Hartline.

Bess, at his best, can be one of the top slot guys in the league. He is shifty in the Welker mold and can make some acrobatic catches for someone his small size. A solid open field runner who is quick though not so fast. Smart and runs great routes. He has not been as featured this season and has dropped a few (all of our WRs dropped a few early on). In previous years he has lead the AFC in 3rd down conversions, so he has the talent to be really good.

Hartline is our fastest starter at WR (though not our fastest WR). He isn’t slow, and has deceptive speed, but he isn’t a burner either. He has good body control on catches, but often doesn’t gets great separation. Still, a solid contributor who has had some good games. He is technically listed as our #2, but splits with Bess. He usually has one or two nice clutch plays a game, but he hasn’t figured much at all in our win streak.

The other WR you might see is rookie Clyde Gates. He is scary fast, but really raw and hasn’t really caught anything yet. He also sometimes serves as our KR… much to our chagrin. He isn’t very good at it. I am hoping he figures out how to play WR soon, because he can get behind the D, but hasn’t come up with one deep yet.

A lot of our passes lately have been to our TEs and of course Marshall. Marshall, despite his obvious talents drops the ball way too much. If I weren’t already bald, I would rip my hair out. Fasano has been solid recently in the receiving game with 3 TDs in the last 3 games and some nice big plays, but don’t expect to see him in the receiving game because he will be helping Colombo. Charles Clay has been solid receiving as a FB/TE.

Bush lines up all over the field. He sometimes lines up in the slot but carries the ball. Two of our recent TD runs had him going in motion from the slot.

I think Marshall will demand the ball this week (only had 1 reception last week, and he is in the top 5 in the AFC in receptions). Also, Hartline is due. But, that assumes we can keep Moore upright…. Isn’t colombo the guy who let Romo get injured last seaso?

Yea I follow all ex cowboys . Dallas wanted to keep more and actually tried to hide him in the pS.bc we had shot brad Johnson but thought he had more juice left but he didn’t.

He played well in Carolina his first year but fell off his second year when they had Jimmy clusean .. but the whole Carolina team fell off that year. Ask john Fox here..

If Matt Moore keeps playing the way he's been playing the last couple of weeks, then there is no doubt we will keep him

However, that doesn’t mean we won’t draft a QB with the first pick. Stephen Ross said it himself, he wants a young QB to be the future of this team.

As for other targets besides Bush and Marshall, I’ve really seen Charles Clay and Anthony Fasano used greatly as counterparts. I’ll be posting a play breakdown tomorrow afternoon on thephinsider showing how these two are used. You should be able to see what I mean after reading that (if you read it of course).

And Matt Moore tearing up the Cowboys is very unpredictable. For the past few weeks, both the Dolphins and the Cowboys have been playing tremendous and have a lot of momentum coming into Thursday…this is Miami’s first real test to prove that they actually want a shot turning the season around, and the Cowboys will definitely not let up either.

This is going to be a very good game, unfortunately were going to have to spend Thanksgiving screaming at the TV most of the time…even though you all must be a accustomed to it by now lol.

Simply, the difference is everything

I would put it on the Defensive and Offensive line play. These are the core of any team, and the strength of the Dolphins Defense. Them waking up and playing hard has really revitalized the team.

They give Colombo tons of help

TE Fasano is usually on his side. Fasano is a great blocker, but even if he goes out on a route he will chip to give Colombo a hand.

Welcome. Now about...

Langford/Soliai/Starks coupled with your LB play vs the run you’ve been doing well, so what’s up with not getting penetration to pressure the QB much or stuff it more in the backfield? Or am I all wet on that? How do Wake/Taylor look to matchup, in your eyes, vs Smith/Free or is their tendancy’s to slip inside?

‘Phins haven’t appeared as inconsistent as another team I could mention over their past few, but this Thanksgiving’s a whole new ball game. Hope to see your A-game and that we bring ours.

How’s Burnett been performing for you guys, other than the numbers BS. What do your eyes tell you?

Thanks for coming over to answer some questions, share in some pregame talk, ribbing, the works (aside from the nonsense that sometimes happens). Hope your stays enjoyable.

Great questions

I hope some other phins fans come here, as I am relatively uninformed on some of the technicalities of line play. I will remind people that this post is here.

Also, I am with you 100% on the “eyes” v “stats” thing. Thank you for asking it that way! I only wish my eyes were good enough to answer your question skillfully.

That being said, we have improved somewhat in the pass rush department. The general lackluster performance early on in the season was true across the board in all aspects of our D, so it is hard to talk about our lack of penetration when even Wake looked mediocre. His game has picked up, but even still, JT has lost a step and Misi is more of a run-stopper. Wake will be lined up mostly against Smith, not slipping inside. I don’t know enough about Smith other than to know he is highly rated. SHould be a nice matchup. How did he do against Kerrigan?

Recently though, our 3/4 DE Jared Odrick our 1st rd pick last season) has been turning it on. He really is a solid player. Strong, tough and with a high motor. The sack he had on Fitz this past week may not look like much, except he had two blockers and didn’t give up on the play.

As to Burnett, early on he didn’t look all that different from Channing Crowder in terms of coverage (i.e., bad). Recently, he has improved a bit, but we haven’t faced good TEs through the win streak. Fred Davis, who is the best we faced, beat him easily on one play but the pass fluttered and (though he should have caught it) he dropped it. If the pass had been more in stride, he would have taken it to the house. That was one play. He has been in better position on other occasions. Still, I will be watching him this Thursday carefully.

Asked and answered more than skillfully

Impressions from the other side, the “feel” of their team’s game, that’s as, even more, indicative of a team than many a stat that gets broiught to the table. Think you get what I mean, it’s that numbers and eyeballs tell the story if they’re accurate and insightful, more than purely one or the other, especially when they just don’t jive with reality but are skewed or cherry-picked/biased perspectives. Biased in the blind homerist sense, not the natural bias we all have for our squads.

Anyways, Smith seemed to hold his own, did ok (especially considering the rook bit, but in this case that kinda works both ways) overall. Kerrigan got a sack late coming into halftime that set up a too-quick punt and killer return, resulting in a quick 2nd ‘Skins TD in about the final 5 minutes of the quarter. Other than that, and with only a few times of some doubling help, he acquitted himself quite well, yet again, despite our inconsistent overall OL play. For the most part, it’s not been on his account. Frankly, he’s been a gem. Sure, the occasional indication of the rookie learning curve, but, overall, stalwart. Hope that all doesn’t come across as homerism, merely a pleased assessment of a pick that’s workinjg out… – beautifully, so far. So much so, it’s not unrealistic to think Wake may have more success vs Free. It’s kind of a gametime thing, try both, see which matchup works, from a D’s OLB’s perspective, if that makes sense to you. So you’re saying the expectation’s that Wake’ll be lining up LOLB? Has that been happening much? Or is Nolan moving him around? Lately or season long so far? On that note, given the ‘Phins increase performance of late, what’s your feeling on what Nolan’s done or not done?

Given what you’re saying about Odrick, has there been much McDaniel/Soliai/Odrick, the last 2 games excepted as I don’t think McDaniel played, correct? And on the “not look like much”, when a guy’s doubled, doesn’t give up and ends up beating tghe doublijng for pressure or the sack, that says plenty. It ain’t about looks, it’s about results and the tenacity to keep at it till you get ‘em. Curious, just where has Odrick’s strength been, in terms of how he’s pulling off penetration?

On Burnett, reason I asked was he seemed to be one of those middling steady roleplay guys that needed and earned reps to improve or hit his groove, but he didn’t really get that here. Kinda of a messed up favoritism siutaion back then and with his departure to the Bolts in a numbers game bit of silliness I think we lost out, Bolts gained. His time there went about the same way and with new DC coming in, numbers game again. Bolts probably rethinking that call now. Anyways, not that the guy’ll be some superstar, but he should prove decent enough if given playing time. Then again, what do I know. But against Witten, well, I can’t say much without bias coming into it, as JW’s, well, something special in my eyes. He makes many look… – wanting.

Anyways, good skilled game, no serious injuries and an enjoyable Thanksgiving to ya, game-wise and family, friemds, whatever yours holds in store for ya.

Thanks, but in my child raising hasiness (I have a 3 year old and a 4 month old) I messed up the Odrick play :)

That was a tackle for a 1 yd gain by fitz. Still not a bad play at all. Also, the double was a chip shot by the RB. I don’t want to overstate it and pretend like he took on two large OLs. Also, Wake had already busted that play up but Fitz ducked under his dive (FYI – Starks was lined up on the left side and Soliai was the NT, with Odrick on the Right; in truth Wake was in a 3 pt stance on the line so Starks and Soliai were really more like DTs)

The next play was the sack. Same positions (Odrick lined up at RE wide in a 3 pt stance, Wake Left same, with Starks and Soliai as DTs – at least that is what it looked like to me). Odrick showed strength and some explosiveness as he basically pushed back their LT, got him turned around and very rapidly disengaged for the clear shot at Fitz.

The week before he got a a sack against grossman. Similar formation but different players. Wake and JT are lined up wide on the line in 4 pt stances with McDaniels and Odrick as basically as DTs. Dansby and Burnett were crowding the line showing blitz. The skins LG hesitated at the snap for a wink of an eye, probably confused as to whether he needed to block Odrick or Dansby (Dansby dropped into coverage), which gave Odrick the time he needed to explode past him. Even the hold couldn’t stop Odrick.

Hopefully, that gives you a sense of him as a player and of the fact that we really do switch our lineman around in different formations. If you look at the snaps they take on a site like PFF, (which doesn’t tell you where they lined up unfortunately) you will see that the lineman all range between 30-50 snaps a game roughly.

Oh, and wake almost always lines up opposite the RT

just seems more comfortable on that side.

A lot of the issues with the D had to do with health, and off season conditioning. I remember your opening game (I wish you had won!), where some of you DBs were out. We had that bug for a while. Also, I think we relied on Channing Crowder’s mind more than people like to admit. He may not have made big plays, but he was known to be a leader and coach on the field. It has taken a while for newer players to fill that void.

Nolan did apparently make some questionable calls. Still, some of them were bad raps. People complain about putting Nolan Caroll on Andre Johnson, but it was actually a mistake by Rashad Jones, the FS, who was supposed to be in support.

Finally, something that has been happening the last few weeks, perhaps fighting the trend in the NFL. Our limitations in coverage are being made up for by smash mouth play. Our safeties Bell, Culver and Jones (and I hope to see Chris Clemons who I like and who is fast and can hit!) have been hammering WRs. Most (though not all) the hits are totally legal.

Great observations

I will try to fill in some of the more technical issues of the Fins D.

The run D has been very stout the last 3 games. Even with teams running the ball all over the fins the first 3/4 weeks, their performance the last 3 weeks has them as the 7 best rush defense in the league. A lot of this has to do with NT Paul Soliai and DE Kendall Langford waking up and realizing that we exited the pre-season a while ago. Soliai had one monster year and gets the most attention, but Langford in last 2 years has quietly been one of the best 3-4 DEs in the league.

In the base 3-4 defense the fins will have Dansby/Burnett at MLB, Starks/Soliai/Langford in the front 3, and Wake/Misi at OLB. Wake, as you know, is a pass rush specialist, but Misi is severely lacking in that department. As Strange noted, he is a good run stuffer but not much else. As Wake really doesn’t have much help on the other side, teams are free to focus on him. Wake has actually been very disruptive this year in pressures, hurries, and hits, but is not putting up the sacks. A great deal of the success the last 3 weeks has been the pressure the D-Line is starting to generate, but ultimately they just don’t come up with the sack. What I like is that they are very effective when they blitz 5 or more. They also get decent pressure when they line up in a pass rush package. This package is either a 3 or 4 man front with some combination of Starks, Odrick, McDaniel, Langford, Taylor, and Wake.

Burnett has been playing well, but the real hero of that D is Dansby. He can blitz, fall back into coverage, and stuff the run; overall, he is a very complete LBer. Dansby and Burnett make a very good combo of MLBers. They seem to be getting more comfortable playing next to each other.

Thanks for the info

The OLB siutations on both sides are comparable, with Ware being Wake and Spencer Misi, though Spencer’s probably got a bit more rush than Misi (despite the BtB-internal sh!tstorm of a debate that all brings on). You may have an edge on the DL, as we’re not generating pressure along the line. Now, nailing down just what Ryan’s (our DC) doing gets a bit tricky at times as its a bit unconventional in terms of not being a static front 7 akin to most D’s. Idea’s to throw confusing looks to the opposing QB, with player shifts, disguised pressure/coverage schemes and the like. On your sacks, or lack thereof, with respect to Wake and overall, personally I’m of the opinion that sacks aren’t the be all and end all. Pressure, the hurried throw, unnerving a QB, all that, plays just as much into the game. More, in the sense it may happen more often. Sure a sack kills the play, but they’re not as frequent as the other and a pick has it’s own… – benefits. Score or not. Incompetions, string ‘em one after another, and you’re punting. There’re many ways to win.

Soliai’s pulled in the pass rush package?

I’ll keep my eye on Dansby, as complete LB’s are as much a interest as TE’s. Same types, other sides of the ball, if you get what I mean. Thanks for the heads up. Inside, with respect to our side, it’s a shame Lee’s got a cast on, but even with that, keep your eye on the guy. And if Carter’s on the field, he’s shown flashes in his few opportunties, but is raw, green. Still, you may see a quick, around-the-ball kinda guy that we think holds some promise.

Seems to be, although they do switch it up

I mentioned one example earlier.

Keep in mind, I am not very experienced at recognizing formations and such, but on the Odrick sack of Grossman two weeks ago. It was 3rd and 2, Grossman was in the shotgun with a single back. It was 11 personnel with the receivers relatively close in (I am sure there is a technical term I am forgetting that is the opposite of wide).

The phins were in Nickel coverage with four DL. Taylor and Wake were both in 4 pt stances on the line, with McDaniel and Odrick as DTs.

To make any 3-4 defense

special, you need both outside LB’s to be excellent at rushing the passer. We had Spencer playing extremely well in ’09, (I think it was), to the point that Peter King from Sports Illistrated said he was becoming Ware like, but then in 2010, he kind of fell off the cliff like most of our defense.

I think Ryan had hopes he could get him going again and he seems to be getting closer and closer to doing something but is back to being what he was before ’09, which was being “Almost Spencer.”

If the play works, never run it again. If it fails, keep running it.
First and goal at the one. Run it three times in a row, and then kick a field goal. Sound familiar?

The story of our defense the past few weeks has not been about Wake or Taylor

Although both of them have shown up at times. I know part of it is that Wake is getting a lot of double teams. What has made the difference is

1. Soliai and Odrick up front. While Langford has been very solid, Soliai and Odrick have been rather dominant.
2. Dansby and to a lesser extent Burnett. I think the improved play of Soliai and Odrick have really freed them up to run around and make plays. Dansby proclaimed a few weeks ago that he was the best ILB in the NFL. He called Ray Lewis and Brian Urlacher “old”. He said he was better than Patrick Willis… While I love the bravado, I don’t really believe that. But he has been playing lights out lately. The last few weeks he is definitely playing like a top 5 ILB, and I might even say top 3. If I were to guess what took so long, I would say that Soliai was getting pushed into him the first half of the season and he is finally starting to understand Mike Nolan’s defense.
3. In the secondary, we finally got Vontae Davis back. Add to that the pressure we have been getting up front and the general mayhem that guys like Dansby and Odrick have been bringing have covered up some things that were getting exposed. The biggest problem we have I think in pass coverage is both of our CBs and LBs are really more suited for press man coverage, and Nolan likes to blitz and then play zone on the back end. But lately all of that has been covered up by what has been going on up front. Our DBs are able to be more physical and they have been letting out a little bit of aggression on the teams we played. We got some defenseless receiver calls a few weeks ago, but last week I think they took 3 WRs out of the game at one point or another for the Bills.

The past 12 quarters(3 games) we have not allowed a TD. I hope we can at least keep that up through the first quarter.

As much as stats don't tell the whole story, especially vague stats

PFF lists the following:

sacks: 6 (tied for 13th in the league and 6th amongst 3/4 OLBs)

QB Hits: 12 (2nd in the league 3/4 OLBs; Ware is actually much lower here… his “hits” are more meaningful because they happen before the ball gets out :))

QB Pressures: 34 (1st in the league amongst 3/4 OLBs by a noticeable margin; I have no idea how they judge QB pressures)

PFF as of this week actually has him rated the highest out of all 3-4 OLBs

By the numbers, if you take them on their face value, he is having a good season, he just isn’t getting as many sacks.

The eye test tells me he is often in the QBs face disrupting plays. I wish we had a stronger presence across from him.

A few questions:

1) How do you feel about moving a decent RT in to G where has been less effective and putting in the worst RT in the world? Doesn’t make much sense to me.

2) What happened to your D this year?

3) Do you think Sparano is a good HC?

by Ben24626 on Nov 22, 2011 11:56 PM CST reply actions

alright here goes

1. Personally, I hated what sparano did to the right side of the OL. Moving Carey to guard, his original position out of college will increase his shelf life, but will decrease his quality. Colombo, well he has been replaced with free agent banana peel, who is playing much better and is improbing the OL as a whole.

2. Our D was out of shape. No other reason. Whether it was the lockout or whatever, I don’t know. They were cramping up week 1, Vontae Davis missed the first half of the season with a hamstring injury and Karlos Dansby showed up 25 pounds overweight. As the season progressed, they have gotten in better shape and have been playing better.

3. Sparano is Jekyll and Hyde in terms of coaching. Sometimes, like the first half of this season, he will show why he should never have been a coach. And sometimes , like the past few weeks, he will show why he should stay. I personally believe that he should be fired, but many fans like him again after the last few wins.

I hated him a few weeks ago...

My knock on him was that he never won the games we were supposed to win easy. Teams that never should have beaten us did because we would get up by a TD and then start to play this field position game. That doesn’t work when the other team is trying to score more TDs than you. But I have loved what has taken place the last few weeks. It seems he realized is the way you beat really bad teams is you put it on them the first 3 quarters then don’t let up in the 4th quarter. The only way I want him around next year though is if we end the season 9-7. How do you not blame the head coach when the team comes out 0-7 to start the season?

Carey was not decent...

While he was not as bad as Columbo has been this year, he was also not really that good. He would regularly let an elite pass rusher run by free without even getting a hand on their jersey.

Brandon Marshall

what happened last week?He lost my fantasy game for me .Should I trust him this week or is something wrong with him?

I hate to start him because I don’t want him to do good against theBoys.

by TCB Orange Dino on Nov 23, 2011 12:33 AM CST reply actions

Marshall was more of a decoy this past sunday

he also dropped two passes, one a gimme but the second for the TD would have been tough (and might have made the plays of the week had it been upheld on the challenge).

Also, we didn;t throw as much as in previous weeks as we went up early, had two ints in or near the RZ and scored on a blocked punt. Moore threw 20 times, completing 14 passes. including 4 to Charles Clay, the FB/TE

I would be shocked if they didn’t try to get him the ball more this week. He won’t be happy otherwise. Also, Fasano, who has been getting some looks, should be busy helping Marc “the turnstile” Colombo.

If Marshall doesn’t get a lot of targets, it will be because Moore is pressured and not because there is something wrong with him (apart from dropsies).

Not too many years ago,

the RT didnt need to have quick feet as a prerequisite because most teams are “right handed”, meaning they run to the Tightend side which is usually the right side, so they would put their best “mauler” olineman as the RT, but in the last few years Defensive Coordinators recognized that their best Rusher was usually only being used against the other teams best and quickest of foot Olineman the LT, so they started moving that guy (like Ware) over to the RT to take advantage of him not being able to handle the “speed rush” guy. At the same time Columbo was getting slower……not a good combination!

If the play works, never run it again. If it fails, keep running it.

If they're not going heavy...

… Fasano inside, Nolan’s missing a chink in the armor, especially if you see a James/Brooking tandem out there. Stalwarts at one time, but age and toil have taken their toll. Then again, as you say, if Columbo doesn’t get help vs Ware, it could be a looong day for Moore stretched out between markers. Who else do the ’Phins use for the middle-field short-to-intermediate stuff?

It has been one of the reasons Fasano isn't as big a part of the passing game

while he is not the biggest receiving threat out there, and has had some drops, he can make some nice catches as well (he has made some tremendous catches actually). I think he would be a more known name if we didn’t always need him to block due to poor o-line play the past two seasons.

by One.Cool.Customer on Nov 23, 2011 4:02 AM CST reply actions

One thing I would think Woicik might

bring to the table is the recognition that guys like Igor that are very strong in the Upper body really need and are often lacking in the most improtant area for the guys in the trenches….and that is becoming much stronger with their “squats” than they currently are.

Guys love to be in the gym and do the “bench press” and “Clean and Jerk”, but often you will see those big guys that should be doing “squats”, doing the more popular stuff instead.

Leverage is a key in the trenches and it comes from leg strenght more that upper body strength and that upper body strength was Igor’s advantage, but it was misplaced….IMHO!

He is mostly deep int the rotation though, due to our excess of quality DEs. But he takes advantage of his playing time and made a few good tackles over the weeks.

Fasano isn't a good receiver.

He has nice hands (but lacks concentration at times), but wouldn’t be able to out run a 34 DL. There’s a reason why some of our OL have higher speed ratings than him.

Bennett can block as well as Fasano, but is faster and can gain separation on LBers.

And when the light finally comes on, I just hope that somewhere in the darkness they're thinking of me, too" - Larry Csonka.

Thank you all for the conversation

I am torn. Depressed because we lost and were sloppy. Happy though that we stayed with you guys, which no one would have expected a few weeks back.

Good luck the rest of the way.

Gave

Thanks here.

Good luck to you too. Though, those ‘Phins needn’t the wish. They’ll make plenty of their own on the good side. Enjoy the season. Feb 6th’s coming way too quick.
