Position Outlook-Offensive Center

HI ya'll with this week being sort of a Bye Week I have a chance to get another "Position Outlook" post up before starting on my Next WWGD post. So here it is.

Here is my next installment of my series called Position Outlook, where I will be profiling each position and the Players that Dallas has for that position. I will be giving MY opinion on the relative strength of the position, and How likely I think Dallas will be drafting that position in the 2012 NFL Draft. I will include All current players+ practice squad in this evaluation.

Now I will be using Stats from NFL.com(where applicable) and NFLDraftScout.com(where applicable) as the Basis for my Evaluation.I will also be giving the Contract Info via Rotoworld .com, along with a few things from the Mothership(DC.com) Once I have shown the players, I will rank them using the 5 star method as Follows:

5 Stars- Minimum Amount of Quality Starters at Position and At least one quality Backup for Position= BPA only if player is ranked significantly higher than any other player, and would not be a factor in FA

4 Stars- Minimum amount of Quality Starters at position, Unproven Depth = Address as BPA and FA for Depth

3 Stars- Minimum of one Quality player at starter, young, but unproven Depth=slight need, BPA in rounds 4-7 preferably, look to fill need in FA

2 Stars-Serviceable Starter(s), No Depth = solid need, BPA if within rounds 1-3 if not taken care of in Free Agency

1 Star- No Quality players at starter nor in depth= major need, Draft no later than 2nd round, would take precedence over BPA if Gap is close enough, and is a must target in Free Agency

The series so far:

QB position 3 stars

Offensive Tackle position 4 stars.

Offensive Guard position 3 stars

It seems that there is some confusion to the rankings. The grade is merely what I think the relative strength of the position itself is. I am not saying that any one group is "better than another" To Illustrate: I gave the Tackle position 4 stars, yet I gave the QB position 3 stars. This is not to say that Romo,Kitna, and McGee are less talented than Doug Free, Tyron Smith and Jeremy Parnell. What the Rankings signify is a combination of TOTAL talent, age, and Contract status of ALL rostered players+Practice squad player FOR EACH Position. I am grading as a Group not individuality. While the Individual grades do impact the overall ranking, a "higher" ranking does not mean "better" or more talented. I hope that this clears up any confusion

As requested in the last poll I will be profiling the Center position. So lets look at the Depth chart for the Center position:

Center

Phil Costa

Kevin Kowalski

Practice Squad: None

Yep that right Folks two players. However I highly doubt any Team carries more than two pure centers on the roster+PS, so that is not unusual. So Lets look at These two Players:

Phil Costa

Now I want you all to look at these two players. Notice how similar in build they are. I would bet that this is the Prototypical Center that Dallas(Garrett) wants, so as we are studying for the draft keep this template in mind. As for the Outlook this one is tough to judge, However I would Say 5 Stars- Minimum Amount of Quality Starters at Position and At least one quality Backup for Position= BPA only if player is ranked significantly higher than any other player, and would not be a factor in FA

Now of Course your opinion of Costa may vary this ranking, but It is my opinion that matters in this post. I will contend that Costa is a talented player that needs some more polishing. I would have like to have seen Dallas keep Gurode as the Starter for one more year due to the Lockout which really hurt players like Costa and Kowalski. another reason for the high ranking is Bill Nagy. He was a Starter at Center on Arguably the Best O-line in College Football, So I almost put him in here. However He has gotten most of his work at Guard so I felt that While I shouldn't include in in the Post, I could include him in the Ranking. PLus I have already profiled him in my Offensive guard post(see above for link).

Edit: there has been alot of talk that Costa isn't starting Quality....so I am going to add in this little tidbit gleaned from OCC's "Grading the Cowboys" posts, here is Costa's per game PFF grade:

Cardinals: -2.2

Miami: +2.0

Redskins: -1.8

Bills: +1.8

Seahawks: -0.4

Eagles: +1.4

Rams: -1.0

Patriots: -6.3

Lions: 0.9

Redskins:-2.4

49ers:-1.3

Jets: -0.9

As you can see Costa current grade of -10.1 comes mostly from the Patriots game, where he got a -6.8. However even with that Costa has posted an Average grade of -0.85 which is merely slightly below average. Considering that he is an undrafted 2nd year player, with only a single full off season to work on his strength and technique, IMO that is pretty danged good. and for referance over the past two years 4 C/G's have been selected in either of the first two rounds....Overall they have posted an average per game grade of 0.17....and Outside of Alex Macks extermely good Rookie Season, where he had an average grade of 1.2(which is what Tyron Smith has done this year) the Average grade for a first-second round Rookie is -0.73. Yet Costa is nearly equally that.....that is why the Center position gets a 5 star ranking.....

As Always I look Forward to your Critiques and Criticisms. Feel Free to Chime in on your take (I am sure that there will be a few)..... Again I leave it up to you all to decide what position I do next(though by the last poll I have a good Idea)
