Everyone knows these last two games have been close nail biting games. Many people are unsure of who the Cowboys are as a team. I want to get my thoughts out about the last two games, as well as discussing some things that make me nervous down the stretch. This is my first post on Blogging The Boys, and I'm excited to share my thoughts here.
First, while the Cowboys didn't blow out either the Dolphins or the Redskins, both teams with a losing game, they didn't blow the game either. They've figured out how to win close games, rather then lose them. Dan Bailey has been incredible and Romo bounced back nicely in the Miami game. The experience in winning these close games and the poise they showed in not giving him up will be helpful later down the line.
Second, these games have been against teams who have been better then people think. They Dolphins have won 3 straight, and the Redskins have played all three close home games against division rivals. They even beat the Giants there and almost came back against the Eagles. This was one of the best rivalry games in football, and no one should be surprised with how tough the Redskins played.
Some things that worry me are: Tony Fiammetta's mysterious illness,Miles Austin's hamstring, and our lack of a backup qb . Tony Fiammetta has been essential to the team's success on the ground game, but while he's sick, he can't help much at all. The Cowboys need to sign another run blocking fullback to help the ground game out a bit, because with out Fiammetta, the run game suffers.
Miles Austin should be coming back next week, but how do we know he's fully healthy? According to ESPN, in the games before his second injury he went for 74 yards against the Pats (then the league's worst pass D), 2 catches for 16 yards against the Rams, 3 catches for 27 yards against the Eagles, and 2 catches for 53 yards against the Seahawks (he did leave early with his injury this game). While Laurent Robinson only had 2 catches for 43 yards against the Pats and 2 catches for 25 yards against the Rams, he developed his chemistry with Romo in week 9 and has a touchdown or more in every game so far. While I understand the presence a healthy Miles Austin on the field, he hasn't looked like himself after his first hamstring injury. Why don't the Cowboys just have Miles as the #3 WR for week 13 and make sure Miles is truly healthy? Laurent Robinson has shown he can carry the load.
Our lack of a backup quarterback is the most disturbing. I personally do not believe Stephen Mcgee is a capable backup. With two games left against the Giants' pass rush, Romo is at a huge risk to get injured. It is not our of the question for a Giants Defensive lineman to take a cheap shot on Romo just to make sure the Giants get 1st place in anyway possible. The Cowboys need a backup that we have faith in. Why not sign David Garrard? While he's not the same quarterback as Romo, he didn't play terribly for the Jaguars and could really be a solid backup plan heading down the stretch.
Just my thoughts on a couple of issues. Let me know what you guys think!
