Grading Dolphins @ Cowboys: Performances Of Note
Another close game on Thanksgiving saw the Cowboys edge the Dolphins and move to a 7-4 record. Certainly a cause for celebration all around, even if the win wasn't as convincing as many had expected.
But a win is a win, and at this time of year, that's all that counts. The Cowboys have gained an extra couple of days ahead of their matchup against the Cardinals on Sunday, and after taking those days off, they'll begin preparations for their next game. As part of that they'll review Thursday's performance in detail, and they'll find some things they like and others that they don't.
With a whole week to go before the game, we'll do the same thing here on BTB and review the Cowboys' individual performances against the Dolphins. As usual, we'll do that using the Pro Football Focus player grades.
Follow the link for a lengthy introduction to the PFF methodology. Better yet, read PFF's detailed FAQ, which should answer the vast majority of questions.
|
Offensive Line |
The overall grade for the Cowboys' O-line, a -2.3, suggests they were slightly below average as a unit, but in reality, that number hides what was quite an uneven performance by the Cowboys O-line.
| WK 1 | WK 2 | WK 3 | WK 4 | WK 6 | WK 7 | WK 8 | WK 9 | WK 10 | WK 11 | WK 12 | |
| NYJ | SF | WAS | DET | NE | STL | PHI | SEA | BUF | WAS | MIA | |
| Overall Grade |
-1.4 | -12.4 | -6.0 | +9.2 | -14.9 | +4.9 | +1.2 | +4.9 | +9.9 | -2.4 | -2.3 |
The individual grades give a much clearer indication of how the line performed:
| Free | Holland | Costa | Kosier | Smith | |
| LT | LG | C | RG | RT | |
| vs. Miami |
-0.6 |
-0.5 |
+2.0 | -2.0 | -0.1 |
| Run Blocking |
+1.4 | -2.2 | +0.9 | +0.2 | -1.1 |
| Pass Protect |
+0.6 | +1.4 | +0.9 | -2.1 | +1.1 |
Hooray for Phil Costa: For the first time all season, Costa graded out as the best Cowboys lineman with a +2.0, performing equally well in both run blocking and pass protection. Over the last five games, Costa has accumulated a +3.1 grade after getting a -11.0 in his first six games. Remember how we talked early in the season about how it would take the Yuglies time to adjust to the NFL, and they likely wouldn't come into their own until the second half of the season? Well, we're in the second half now, and Phil Costa is the poster child for that hypothesis. He's been a popular whipping boy for his early-season performance, but he's become much less of a liability in recent games, grading out positively in three of his last five.
False start number 68: Doug Free got called for three false starts. His grade for the those penalties (-2.6) overshadows what was an otherwise solid outing. Free has been flagged for nine penalties so far this season (four holding and five false starts). Only three tackles in the league have been called for more.
Get well soon: Kyle Kosier was limited in practice with a foot injury, and he doesn't appear to have been fully healthy on the field. Kosier allowed one QB Hit and gave up three pressures.
Unexpected run-blocking problems: Both Holland and Smith struggled with run-blocking, Holland had his first red grade for the year here, and Smith only his third.
| Skill Position Player Highlights |
- Laurent Robinson (55 of 63 snaps, +1.9) Two TDs and superb playmaking ability outweigh the two drops Robinson had as well as the interception thrown at him. PFF even liked his run-blocking (+0.8). The graders liked Dez Bryant's three receptions for 35 yards a little less and gave him a -0.3.
- Tony Romo (63/63, +1.6): I don't know how PFF measure heroics, but apparently they do. Romo's production late in the game outweighs his two early interceptions. He did improve his passer rating from 51.6 in the first quarter to 114.1 in the second quarter.
- DeMarco Murray (48/63, -0.2) got a good grade (+1.2) as a receiver, was okay as a rusher (+0.2) but gave up two of the Cowboys' five QB hits as a pass blocker (-1.7).
| The Front Seven |
Just like in the Redskins game, the official NFL gamebook credits the Cowboys defense with 9 tackles for loss, tied for a season high. The Cowboys defense also held their opponent to under 100 yards rushing for the seventh time this season, which moves the Cowboys back into the top ten of run defenses in the league. Lots of green grades follow as a result:
| DL | OLBs | ILBs | ||||||||||
| Starters | Backups | Starters | Backups | Starters | Backup | |||||||
| Coleman | Ratliff | Hatcher | Spears | Lissemore | Brent | Ware | Spencer | Butler | Lee | James | Brooking | |
| Snaps (69 total) |
29 | 52 | 35 | 21 | 16 | 11 | 63 | 68 | 15 | 67 | 30 | 13 |
| Rating |
+1.0 | +2.3 | -1.0 | -1.0 | +1.2 | -0.9 | +1.6 | +3.9 | +0.5 | +1.3 | +2.0 | +0.7 |
On a solid day for the front seven, Anthony Spencer stood out with four QB pressures, one pass defended and eight tackles, including three tackles for loss.
Sean Lissemore again had a very strong outing. With only 170 defensive snaps for the season to his credit, he narrowly misses out on making the PFF ranking at his position. If he were to be included, his +10.6 season grade would rank him sixth among all 3-4 defensive ends, sandwiched between Texans Antonio Smith (+11.7) and J.J. Watt (+8.6). I'm sure there is a good reason why the coaches aren't playing Lissy more (he he he), but I expect him to get a lot more playing time next season.
| Secondary |
If you've read this post all the way to this point, you must be wondering where all these mostly positive grades are coming from. After all, the game was pretty close until literally the last seconds. Look no further than the Cowboys secondary. They did not have a good day.
The Cowboys' pass defense is and remains the teams' Achilles heel. One game they'll haul in interceptions like there's no tomorrow, the next day they'll give up long plays like they were having a fire sale. At least that's the feeling you get as a fan watching the games. Here's what the Cowboys' defensive passer rating has looked like for each game so far this season.
| WK 1 | WK 2 | WK 3 | WK 4 | WK 6 | WK 7 | WK 8 | WK 9 | WK 10 | WK 11 | WK 12 | |
| Opponent | NYJ | SF | WAS | DET | NE | STL | PHI | SEA | BUF | WAS | MIA |
| Def. Passer Rating |
88.7 | 99.1 | 77.5 | 71.9 | 82.3 | 64.7 | 129.9 | 40.4 | 46.6 | 95.2 | 99.5 |
| Starting Corners Out |
1 | 2 | 1 | 1 | - - | - - | - - | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
I've taken the liberty of adding a line in the table indicating how many of the starting corners (Newman, Jenkins, Scandrick) were out injured for each game.
The Cowboys have played only three games with all their three starting corners on board. Unfortunately that three-game stretch also includes the abomination of a game in Philadelphia, but it is what it is.
For the season so far, the Cowboys have put together a 80.8 defensive passer rating. That's not nearly as bad as most fans feel about the Cowboys' secondary. In fact, it's ranked 12th in the league, and is a lot better than the 92.8 the team put up last year. Heck, it's even better than the 83.5 the Cowboys put up in 2009.
That's all very nice of course, but it doesn't change the fact that the Cowboys secondary had a bad day against the Dolphins. I won't even go into all the details here about individual performances, just the grades:
Abram Elam: 69/69, -2.4
Gerald Sensabaugh: 68/69, +0.8
Orlando Scandrick: 68/69, +0.8
Terence Newman: 67/69, -3.4
Alan Ball: 34/69, -3.5
Frank Walker: 25/69, -1.8

+1 on ball
he just isnt helping the overall cause. but then again, who in the secondary is? i understand tnew is “decent” this year, but the secondary in itself is either old or outplayed every week. this secondary needs work, they should devote the top two draft picks to fixing it, if the personell is available.
Still scratching my head about dropping McCann
but that’s water under the bridge. He’s now playing good special teams ball for the Raiders. Don’t know if he’s their 4th or 5th CB.
re. Ball. He’s our 4th CB. I don’t think he sucks as a 4th. If he’s improving, then we need to keep him. If he’s plateaued then he could be replaced. Likely that he, Walker, McCann, and even Butler are separated by very little.

He probably is pretty descent as a 4th maybe 5th DB
To me though it would be wiser to use a guy who has a ceiling in those positions. I think Ball has reached his ceiling, mediocre corner, less than mediocre safety, mediocre special teams.

Is Mario Butler that bad?
What would cutting Ball and bringing up a PS guy cost the cap?

Yes they are
but it’s tough to hide corner-backs when the offense spreads the field, that’s why they spread the field.
At a point there’s only so much the coach can do, a cornerback has to play cornerback.

Just underscores the fact that the secondary must be a top priority in the 2012 draft.
We need to find a replacement for T New, we need help at safety, take your pick, and we need some depth. We need help at DE, but the secondary seems at this point to be the main priority. I’d resign Spencer and not make a pass rusher a pressing need. That’s it for now, but there are other areas I hope we can also address.

grades as poorly as a 9-million dollar 1st corner who plays almost all the snaps, and everyone’s saying to get rid of Ball?
Get perspective. An average or even below average 4th corner is not our problem. Hurt (and old) starting corners are our problem.

But Newman has played well at times. Not to say he isn’t old or that we don’t need to draft a replacement.
Ball is rather hot/cold. Or maybe I should say lukewarm/cold.

The visual effects

Design firm, who did Lucas Oil in Indy, no doubt saw this, as there are similar effects there. Jerry, probably didn’t pay so much attention because he couldn’t figure out how to charge for it.
Played golf in E TX last week with a guy who had been to the new Stadium and wasn’t especially complementary. One of his complaints was remote parking, (17 mi away)and a 25 min shuttle ride or nearby parking at $90. Is this true? Also said with the beer sponsorship, only Miller products available on site. Lastly, said the pitch of the stands made the action from the upper tier seem pretty far away.

Tony Romo did have two interceptions, but one was cancelled out by the fumble which lead to the first Cowboys touchdown. As a result, I would give the defense an assist for helping Romo with the fumble.

At the beginning of the season I thought
we could upgrade Spencer through the draft and possibly get a DE who can apply pressure, thus negating the need to blitz all the time.
Since then I have come to realize corner is the most pressing need on D and probably the entire team. Newman is still solid but no longer worth the contract. Jenkins is above average to good, but having problems staying healthy. I like Scandrick in the slot, but he is streaky and I don’t know if I trust him on the outside.
Would love to add a physical press corner to take away the hot routes and allow the blitz to get to the QB.
"There are no traffic jams along the extra mile." ~ Roger Staubach

We need a CB who can battle with the big WRs out there on jump balls, and the speed to keep up.
by Aaron Burtram on Nov 28, 2011 3:50 PM CST up reply actions
Agree
Newman can still play, but not worth the money. Everyone wanted Jenkins off the team a year ago, but now has everyone begging for his return. I’m not sure I trust Scandrick either and question the merit of the contract he was given. Ball? Nuff said.
I’m thinking we may need to go for help at corner with our 1st pick in the draft ahead of DL because I think you are seeing Ryan prove that you can compete in this defense with some middling talent playing significant snaps at DL but that you really struggle with middling talent at corner. Would like to see help at DL too, but talent, performance, injuries and age all must be addressed in the secondary.
a question
How does Doug Free have a +.6 in pass protect and a +1.4 in run blocking but end up with a -.6 overall? what else is taken into account?
Correct
Free’s overall grade of -0.6 is made up of +0.6 pass blocking, +1.4 run blocking, 0.0 screen blocking (which I never mention) and -2.6 for the penalties.

Exactly!
How do you defeat a great pass rush? You throw the screen pass.
How do make sure it’s there when you need it? Don’t show it until its absolutely necessary!
We haven’t yet faced a pass rush of NYG’s caliber. Philly was the next closest.
I’m sure this is just coincidence, but look for lots of screen passes against NYG in the first game. Toss outs too.
Dallas needs work stopping 3rd downs
Dallas really needs to work on stopping opponents on 3rd downs. Need to get more 3 and outs by opponents. Tired of Dallas playing hard-nose football for 2 downs then giving up 1st down with 3rd and longs. This partly due to weaknesses at CB but then try putting either Holley or Ogletree in on the nickel defense. Scandrick & Newman are adequate but they tend to have penalties on coverage for 1st downs.
The pats had Adelman playing DB, but he is a lot faster
Is there really no DBs on someone else’s practice squad that could contribute better than Ball

First year starting
Dunno what everyone expected. He doesn’t have the talent that Tyron has but let’s hope he is good learner.
It won't be from lack of effort if he desn't learn.
There have been several stories of his seeking tutoring from JRat and Gurode (before he was cut). I wouldn’t be surprised to find that Kosier has worked with him too. He’s got the desire. Hopefully he can turn that desire into outstanding play.

Costa has very limited lateral mobility
which is his big weakness; not the TRex arms (though that is a small factor as well-forcing him to get closer to his target and not allowing him as much space for movement)
On the Zone, couchscout talked about that; and some others who have played O line agree. As long as he does not have to move much; can face the guy he is fine; but forcing him to move is his undoing. The Boys have worked on the plays and such to minimize that; but the opposing D’s target him. He is a very good back up but will never be much more then he is now.

Id say RIP Al Davis, but i know your up there drunker than a monkey and clocking angels in the 40 yd dash.
umm you are wrong...
Costa has very limited lateral mobility
which is his big weakness;
his SS time(which measures lateral mobilty BTW) was 4.65 secs…..compare that to
Matt Tennant:
Height: 6045
Weight: 300
40 Yrd Dash: 5.15
20 Yrd Dash: 2.89
10 Yrd Dash: 1.76
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 27
Vertical Jump: 25
Broad Jump: 08’02"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.62
3-Cone Drill: 7.60
Phil Costa:
Height: 6025
Weight: 308
40 Yrd Dash: 5.12
20 Yrd Dash: 3.09
10 Yrd Dash: 1.60
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 30
Vertical Jump: 35
Broad Jump: 09’04"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.65
3-Cone Drill: 7.66
BTW Matt Tennant is the starting center for the Saints…..other than a few Elite centers in the league, Costa is in the top 10 easily for “Lateral Mobility”…..
Here’s a theoretical play from 2010: Snap. Tony takes 7 step drop. Tony looks left at Miles, who is doubled, and looks right to where Roy Williams should be…but instead sees Colombo on his back and a Defensive End foaming at the mouth jumping over Marc’s carcass. Tony proceeds to run like hell and look for Witten

Now, if somebody doesn’t agree with that, that’s cool. I also don’t agree with the fact that I don’t have $10 million in my bank account. But the fact that I don’t agree with it doesn’t make it any less true.

lateral mobility is more than the shuttle
and those talking about his lack PLAYED or COACHED O line. So I take their word over a combine test.

Wrong again Burma
the 20 yard SS is specifically designed to test lateral mobility and Agility…..And just because someone has played or has coached a position doesn’t mean that they are qualified to give an opinion…
I will take a test + the fact that Costa is 2nd year starter over your “experts” any day

DB vs. DL reminds me of OL vs. RB question
I’ll grant that Holland and Fiametta made a difference but Demarco is better than Felix and I believe showed that our running issues were more about the running back than anything else.
We could do with better pressure up front and from Spencer but I think it’s clear that DB is where the urgent upgrading is needed. We should upgrade Newman and Sensi next year. Newman through the draft, not sure about SS though.
At a minimum drafting a quality CB to replace Newman and signing a young vet better than Ball/Walker would ideal.
I agree on the upgrading the DB's.
I can’t count how many times our CB’s have raised my blood pressure because they didn’t even look for the ball or were so far behind after the initial cut and couldn’t make up ground.
Quicker pressure isn’t going to get our CB’s to look for the ball. Quicker pressure won’t help much if the CB can’t close ground. All it can hope to do is prevent a pass, force a throw away or an errant pass. That’s just hiding that our CB’s aren’t good enough to cover or break up passes consistently. I swear, too many times it looks like they’re just hoping the ball hits them in the back of the head as they crash into the receiver.

Yeah, it's definitely both positions
I err on the side of drafting from the inside out, though – linemen before perimeter payers – so my general preference is to get pass pressure help first, then secondary support. If Chia’s draft reports are accurate (and they always are) this will be a pretty deep class for CBs. Not sure yet on DE / OLB, so probably depth will play a big role in deciding who gets taken where.
Don't believe everything you think.
My SS favorites
Ray Ray Armstrong from The U because off his intensity and swag and Mark Barron from ’Bama because of his consistency.
Fiammetta
Supposedly was spotted exercising again. Any word on what this might mean?
I’m guessing he’s still out for the Arizona game, but I really, really hope he’s suited up for the December 11th showdown. The running game has not looked nearly as strong without him.
Per Calvin Watkins
There was some good news as fullback Tony Fiammetta made an appearance on the practice fields wearing a sweatsuit and a knit cap. Fiammetta hasn’t played the last two games because of an undisclosed illness.
Fiammetta was in the Cowboys weight room riding a stationary bike, which is a good sign as he was getting sick when he was working out. Monday’s events could lead to a return in the coming weeks.

According to what i have read
They coud not confirm the problem, so if it’s a concussion, it comes from his previous football career.

REC
Great work again Cool.
I look forward to these every week.
Putting numbers to what we felt we saw.
Thanks. And keep it up.
The offensive line needs to toughen up
before we play the Giants or Romo will get killed. Giants put pressure on rushing 4 and dropping 7. We need to get tougher each week and stay that way every game forward.
