Ask Revenge of the Birds

Hey guys, Joe from Revenge of the Birds here. If there is anything you want to know about the Cardinals, ask away, and please drop by our blog and set up one of these posts as well.

Now for some quick notes.

Star-divide

Kevin Kolb will probably be back this week after his turf toe/bone bruise/foot sprain injury has caused him to miss the last four games. There is some debate on who should be the starter after John Skelton went 3-1 but he has played poorly over the last two games and I think Kolb should be the guy.

Both of our teams have had backs setting franchise records for rushing yards against the Rams this season with Beanie Wells and DeMarco Murray going over 200 yards.

You don't want to kick to Patrick Peterson.

Over the last couple of weeks, the defense has been vastly improved. Horrible to start the year, but now Ray Horton's Steelers style defense is starting to get into a groove.

You guys already know about some of our stars like Larry Fitzgerald and Darnell Dockett, but watch out for Calais Campbell and Daryl Washington. Two great young players who haven't gotten a lot of recognition for their outstanding play this season.

Regret the Kolb trade?

Where should the Cowboys take advantage of the Cardinals?

Some people do, I don't yet

He has only played seven games, and he is learning a system that is a lot different from what he ran in Philly. If he doesn’t get it figured out by the end of next season then I would be regretting it, but right now I just know that you have to be patient.

Its not like Kurt Warner lit it up when he first came here either, it took him two years before he stared playing well in the Desert.

I think the Cowboys are better off attacking us through the air because of the inconsistent pass rush and young corners. The run defense along with the 3rd down/red zone defense has been pretty solid for most of the year as well.

Just want to say I checked out the Revenge of the Birds site.

Some really cocky cardinals fans. They are smelling a blowout, I can’t wait to lead to victory charge over their. Lots of December Romo chants over their, and its downright disrespectful. I hope the Boys go up big, early, and never look back.

Shame, because the few I ran into went so far as to call Romo a "Gladiator", and have seen more than a few close predictions, and even some saying the Cowboys will win.

Most Fans should pick their own team to win

i would feel dirty if I picked against my team. I obviously can’t speak for any of the other fans, but I doubt any disrespect was intended towards the Cowboys in their posts. We love our team and will obviously be biased towards picking our guys to win, even if it is in convincing fashion. No need to take any comments personally

Although i will admit

this doesn’t apply to all the posts. Some fans just simply hate the Cowboys, you should probably that that as respect for your team. You don’t get hatred without respect and actually accomplishing something

I am sure its a little of me over-reacting,

I am just sick of the biased and uninformed Romo hate. I’m up in pats country and all i hear is December this and December that. And thats what i got from the post’s i read.

I think the Cardinals are a better team than their record show’s, and I think we could have a good game. I think the Cowboys win, and pull away in the 2nd. But i think alot of teams need to respect what the Cowboys have accomplished this season.

He hasn't been the elite corner right away that some people expected him to be

But he has been decent, it seems like he gets better each week but he has had a couple of bad games against Steve Smith and Michael Crabtree. Both of our starting corners are very inexperienced though, and they should get better as they play more.

As a Beanie Wells owner

I noticed he didn’t look like himself the last few weeks. Then I traded him, and he blows up for over 200 yards. How does the knee look now? Back to his “earlier this year” self, or still a little hampered?

He actually injured the knee again when it got twisted on a tackle and it looked like he would be out for a while

Then he came back in and broke off a 53 yard run…

He has been injured almost the entire season, but he is fighting through it. It also helped that Anthony Sherman our rookie fullback is back in the lineup after missing a couple of games. He has been outstanding blocking for Beanie.

What did Arizona see in Kolb?

I was blown away when the Cardinals made that trade. He had a bad quarter in his career with the Eagles. Will the gamble pay off?

And yes, don’t punt to Peterson, especially with the Cowboys punt return game being a bit shaky lately.

Kolb's starts and games where he played a good portion of the game since 08 besides the Packers game

[s] = Start

09

Saints [s] – 31 of 51, 391 yards, 2 TD, 3 Int [lost]

Chiefs [s] – 24 of 34, 327 yards, 2 TD [won]

10

Skins – 22 of 35, 201 yards, TD, Int [lost]

49ers [s] – 21 of 31, 253 yards, TD [won]

Falcons [s] – 23 of 29, 326 yards, 3 TDs, Int [won]

Titans [s] – 26 of 48, 231 yards, TD, 2 Int [lost]

Cowboys [s] – 18 of 36, 162 yards, TD, 3 Int

As you guys know, the Cowboys game he had was week 17 with a bunch of backups around him on offense. I also noticed when I watched video of the games he played in that a lot of his interceptions came on hail mary plays like the one he had against the Skins on the final play (it was actually dropped by Maclin or Avant in the endzone before being picked), and two of them came really late in the game against the Saints.

Thats enough for me.

I don’t know all of the details, but I remember hearing that they liked how he was a gym rat, smart, accurate, and a good leader from what their film showed. Whiz also said that he liked Kolb in 2007, but that was the year after we got Leinart and he was coming off of a solid rookie year so there wasn’t any reason to draft a QB at that point.

Colledge and Sendlein (LG and C respectively) have been quite good for us. In fact Colledge was was key for Beanie’s big game against the Rams; he flat out balled on Sunday.
Levi Brown and Brandon Keith have been awful. Levi is average in run blocking and bad in pass pro, Keith is just bad all around

Before they were just extra offensive linemen

But now with Heap, King, and Housler, we have three guys who can go out and catch. King is the best blocker, Heap is the safety valve, and Housler is the deep threat.

I'm really excited for Housler as a reciever

King has been a good FA pickup; he’s chipped in offensively and does his job blocking. Heap has been injured a lot but is starting to get back into action. You get what you expect from both of them.
Housler reminds me of Graham or Hernandez. Great receiving option, good size mismatch, but average to below average blocking

Strictly on Offense?

not too many options, Doucet does well in the slot, but he is usually left is single coverage because of Fitz. LSH could be a very dynamic offensive weapon, but he isn’t used as much, or how, many of us would like. For what ever reason they like to run LSH (5 foot 7) up the middle. He is dangerous in space, with his speed and elusivity, and has the potential to break any catch or run for a big gain

And in fairness to Kolb, there was the Vick-badmouthing, lobbying for the position, semi-smear campaign that went hand-in-hand with the aberrational play.

Obviously you entitled to your opinion so i'll respect that

But from my perspective, i saw a lot of good things from Kolb before he got hurt. He was starting to get more comfortable, get better footwork, better timing, and learning a completely new (and very difficult) style of offense. It doesn’t show up on the stat sheet, but i saw improvement. Hopefully he shows even more this Sunday. sure, he may have been a bit expensive, but thats the price you pay for a young starting QB in the NFL plus DRC wouldn’t fit into Ray Horton`s style of defense. Ì want big men that can run, and small men that can tackle.

In regards to Peterson, i might have broken my television if they didn`t pick Peterson. everything lined up perfectly and he fell right into our laps

Can your offense...

successfully run alot of screens passes to the RB or run short and medium pass routes in the middle of the field? That seems to be where our defense is at its weakest. A west coast style offense is very effective against us because we dont have the speed to deal with the running backs or the line backers to defend against the WR and TE in space. I feel comfortable enough with Newman, Jenkins and Scandrick playing your excellent WR corp. Its Bradie James and Keith Brooking in their old age that concern me.

by Oakster41 on Nov 30, 2011 7:24 PM CST reply actions

Well, put simply, we can’t run a successful screen pass. Beanie isn’t the greatest receiving back, so that certainly doesn’t help. LSH could be used very effectively in the screen game, but for whatever reason we suck at running the screen.
After coming from the West Coast offense in Philly, Kolb obviously has a preference to short and medium passes. We’ll see how he does come Sunday

How well(or poorly) do u guys

play the deep middle of the field?? I ask cause of the Senator(Witten)

by MSCowboy on Nov 30, 2011 7:55 PM CST reply actions

Better lately

The Cards have done a good job preventing deep passes from being completed lately. Hardly anything over 30 yards during the past couple of games

Well hopefully that ends.

Or Romo will just have to throw for 20 yards.

Realist.

The third down and redzone defense has been very good lately

Better off beating us on 2nd or 1st down with that play.

Awww...

… but I like Witten picking up the 1st on 3rds. But if you say string out a series on nuthin’ but 1st and 2nd’s I guess I’ll just have to try and find a way to live with it if he does it that way this one game. You know I’m kinda kidding, right? And kinda not.

btw, you figure the center core of your D front 7’s got the edge vs center of our OL for a thrust to flush Romo out into Acho, given he’s not occupied, or the front 3 open up a lane for Washington? Or how do you see that Card D vs our OL working out so as to prevent Romo&Co from opening things up? No offense, but if it goes wide-open shootout, I’d have to unbiasedly think the edge’d be Cowboys. Gritty, hard-fought defensive battle’d likely be more advantageous for the Cards, no? Really looking forward to seeing your D, especially Acho and Washington.

I think the D-Line can do a good job getting push

And I think overall they can keep the game close. I see it being a 23-20 type of game.

Also, given our redzone woes thesese past few years

Looking forward to seeing some of this years changes tested, given what you say of your redzone D. If they get that far into Cards terrotory, that is.

Mike Sando's blog has a chart every week showing some of those stats

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post/_/id/52765/where-nfc-west-teams-rank-week-12-2

Cards rank 26th in yards and 21st in points given up, but they are fifth best on 3rd down and 10th best in the redzone.

Giving up yardage...

… means one helluva lost less than giving up that final yard.

You like the job Horton’s doing with the Cards?

very much so

we got burned the first few games because of a new system being installed with no off-season. The last 4 weeks though, our defense has played very well. The San Fran game looks sort of bad, but we could have easily won that game if our offense did something. The D just simply ran out of gas and thats when San Fran put on the TDs

Not to much heavy pressure

consistently he’ll send 4-5 rushers, depending on how many down lineman we have on the field. One of our two, if not both,OLBs are usually rushing, and on occasion you’ll see Washington come on a slight delay. Occasionally uses Nickel DBs blitzing or Wilson in the box.
Horton puts our players in the position that they can be most successful. Acho and Schofield are great pass rushers, so he allows them to do that. Wilsonis great in the box, and has lost a step, so he rarely gets put in man against WRs.Washington is an animal, so Horton allows him to flow to the ball and tries to keep him unblocked so that he can make a play.
Overall, i really like Horton, and what he had done with the pieces in place. We had the talent to be good last year, but Bill Davis was an awful DC

You see, as much as...

… Acho/Schofield concern me, it’s your front 3 besting our interior OL and opening up a hole for Washington. Plus, as you say, the flow to the ball methodology overall seeming to work with the personnel.

On Horton, back under Lebeau he displayed potential. Hell, back in Bengals days playing, then surviving the pruning leading to his ring here, then…

Just a quality guy in my opinion. You got yourself a smart cookie, I figure. Hope it pans out, for him, him with your squad, the works. Just not so much vs us.

Joe, GreaZzy, any other Cards fans I might've missed

Congrats on the well-earned W. That D’s fun to watch. Campbell’s pure beast and that Washington’s just plain will o’ the wisp dangerous. Hell, the whole thing works well together, O, D, ST, still areas for improvement as with any team, but that’s a fun team to watch. Get clicking with a solid QB play and who knows what’d come of it. Whisenhunt impressed me as a coach on hiring, but teamed up with Grimm and Horton I think ya got something that’s going to do well with that squad of players.

Man, that game-winner made our D look like swiss cheese. Sweet catch and run. Oh, btw, thanks for not hurting Tony on all those opportunities. We kinda need him in these upcoming games.

Good luck rest of the season, thanks for coming over this week and again, Congratulations on the Win.

Wilson has played surprisingly well actually

We thought he may have been on a sharp decline after last season, but he has been impressive again this year. 66.8 QB rating when thrown at him, i believe. Rashad Johnson is filling in for the injured Kerry Rhodes, and has basically just been a space filler. He can be beat, and doesn’t make any ‘wow’ plays.

Will Patrick Peterson be Hester like in years to come?

Also is he coming on as a CB?

Will he be able to guard Dez Bryant?

Oh and would you rather Peterson or Prince at this point?

Realist.

by DCyanks21 on Nov 30, 2011 8:55 PM CST reply actions

1. Peterson only does punt returns, but even in the small amount of punts he gets to return he has obviously impressed. Hester is the greatest return of all time, so Peterson has a long way to go.

2. He was making very good progression from the beginning of the season, but has seemed to hit a wall. He gets called for penalties to often, and allows to high a completion percentage. He’s coming along, but it is a slow process. IMO CB is the 2nd toughest position, next to QB, to change to from college to pro.

3. He very well could cover Dez. He has the ability to, but i don’t expect him to shut Dez down. Dez is a freak athlete and Peterson simply isn’t refined enough. Peterson needs to get in better position to make a play on the ball, but those skills will develop

4. Peterson, no doubt in my mind. Nothing against Prince, but theres a reason PP went 5th and Prince went 19th. Peterson is the best athlete in the draft and will develop into a very good player.

i expect a tuff slobber knockin football game

but now the cowboys have a real kicker…that changes alot of the plays for the cowboys offense…if it’s a close game and I suspect it will be ..could be another overtime game…IMO…but a money kicker…priceless

You guys were always class act...

and a big lot of kudos for giving Emmitt Smith some more time to shine…I hate the Peterson pick cause I would have traded our first and a third(good thing it didnt happen cause no way I trade Murray, and Smith for Peterson), but the guys a sure nuff stud. Your secondary can only get better from here on out…I dont think that your QB can beat our CBs and we are getting Jenkins back so Im hoping double Fitzgerald with a safety, take away your TE with a LB, and Ware will have a field day all day on Kolb…But good luck out there on Sunday guys…

Thanks

But the strategy your suggesting to employ is the same we’ve dealt with all year. Fitz and Beanie are the only legitimate threats at this point, so we’ve been forced to go to other players.
Sometimes your strategy works, ie San Fran, sometimes it doesn’t, ie all our wins. Look for Early Doucet and Andre Roberts to be given the ball early if Fitz is doubled; this game depends on them

I don't believe in team motivation. I believe in getting a team prepared so it knows it will have the necessary confidence when it steps on a field and be prepared to play a good game.
