Dallas Cowboys News: Tyron Smith For Rookie Of The Year?
Tyron Smith making push for Rookie of the Year - ProFootballFocus.com
While Von MIller has an unassailable lead in the PFF rookie rankings, PFF are picking Tyron Smith over Cam Newton for the No. 2 position as Rookie of the Year.
"Am I crazy? Perhaps, but I’m living by the all-positions-created-equal ethos and I asked myself this very important question: if I was filling an All-Pro ballot right now, which rookies would make it? There isn’t a better right tackle in football right now than Smith."
Stephen McGee is a No. 2 option in 2012 - ESPN Dallas
With Kitna now on IR, Stephen McGee will be Romo's backup for the remaining three regular season games this season. Stephen Jones said he could see McGee "being our backup".
Cowboys watching how much action Ware gets in practice, games - Star-Telegram
Ware didn't practice yesterday, and Alex Mendez writes that the Cowboys are being careful with DeMarcus Ware in practice and in games while he recovers from a stinger he suffered against Arizona.
Cowboys confident Jones can handle bigger role - San Antonio Express-News
"He went into [the Gaints game] game thinking he was going to be a third-down guy and would spot on first and second, and he carried the load and did a really nice job for us," Garrett said. "We have a lot of confidence in him."
Still, Garrett suggested he'll be careful with Jones' touches. The Arkansas alum has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, and there's not much quality depth at the position even after Dallas signed 34-year-old Jay grad Sammy Morris this week.
Television: N.Y.-Dallas the rage in Nielsens - Berkshire Eagle Online
The Giants - Cowboys game had the second highest ratings for a Sunday night game this year. NBC says it ranks No. 6 of all the Sunday night games it has telecast for six seasons. The top-rated game this season was of course anothetr Cowboys game, the opening week game aganst the Jets.
Are the Cowboys mentally tough enough? - Foxsportssouthwest.com
Keith Whitmire argues that Garrett has cleaned up some of the sloppiness of the previous coaching regime and put more emphasis on accountability, but may be finding that changing the heart and will of a team is not nearly as easy. Regardless, the Cowboys have a golden opportunity to prove their mental toughness with three games left on the schedule.
Next stop for Jon Kitna: South Sound? - The News Tribune
The Cowboys placed Tacoma native Jon Kitna on injured reserve, ending his 15th NFL season and possibly his career. Kitna has previously said that after he retires from the NFL, he plans on teaching and coaching in South Sound, along with pursuing a faith-based ministry working with kids.
Thank you, Jon. You are a Right Kind Of Guy.
Cowboys sign QB Chris Greisen to practice squad - Green Bay Press Gazette
Don't worry if the name doesn't ring any bells. Greisen was signed to the practice squad at the end of last season and was actually activated for the last game against the Eagles. Greisen has been a standout for more than a decade in the UFL, Arena Football and other minor leagues.

While I think Tyron deserves consideration
theres not a chance in hell he gets the offensive rookie of the year award over Cam Newton or Andy Dalton.

He's had a better year overall than both of those guys
but unfortunately, whoever votes for this award has a hard time looking past the skill positions. I’m sure it will go to one of those two guys, even though Smith deserves it.

Here’s a theoretical play from 2010: Snap. Tony takes 7 step drop. Tony looks left at Miles, who is doubled, and looks right to where Roy Williams should be…but instead sees Colombo on his back and a Defensive End foaming at the mouth jumping over Marc’s carcass. Tony proceeds to run like hell and look for Witten

Consider this.
Tyron Smith in two years will be twice the player he is now. He is only 21
He has a chance to be in the Walter Jones or Orlando Pace class.
I remember comparing Smith to Orlando Pace before the draft and got skewered for suggesting such a comparison. What a difference a few months make. LOL.
Wish you were here and comfortably numb.
Pace was just a mountain of a man.
Tyron was less than 300lb’s before the draft. I hope he ends up as dominate as Pace. He’s well on his way.

There needs to not be a better LEFT tackle in football than Tyron Smith
Doug Free is an absolute liability there, but could anchor the right side exceedingly well.
I will awaken my expectations for the Cowboys when Jerry Jones is in the ground.
I don't think the difference between the LEFT and RIGHT tackle is as big as it used to be.
Defenses line up there best pass rusher where ever your weakest lineman is regardless of which side of the line he plays on. It’s not like it used to be when you knew Lawrence Taylor was lining up over the left tackle. Just look at how we use DWare or how the Packers use Clay M.

Was listening to John Madden yesterday. He mentioned something that I did in a post.
He talked about being mentally tough but to be mentally tough you have to be physically conditioned. Madden said that he believes the Cowboys look like they not in the best condition. The mind cannot be mentally tough when the body is worn out. Interesting.

He also stated that the Cowboys defense has to opposite Tebow effect.

I didn't hear Madden's comments
But I would bet he meant just as Tebow has a knack for playing three terrible quarters and saving the day in the 4th, our defense has a knack for playing solid for 3 quarters and collapsing at the end of games.
I ran into a group of men trying to take an old lady's purse and decided it was my duty to help out. She was a tough old broad, but in the end we got her purse.

I dont think Denver's defense gets enough credit

You're right.
In reality its the Denver D that is winning the games for Denver. Tebow gets the credit, but does virtually nothing the entire game. Then at the end he pulls a rabbit out of a hat. Let’s see how he fares against Brady and the Pats’ O. Might be a different ending. If they start losing big time he’ll take all the blame.
Wish you were here and comfortably numb.
They have been winning as a team
The defense plays a huge roll by keeping them in it but its kind of hard to deny what Tebow has been doing at the end of games. If it were all on the defense then they would have been winning with Kyle Orton.

Oh come on! Chicago GAVE that game to Denver.
Tebow did not do anything special.

Thats true
The passes Tebow completes could have been completed by any qb in the league…nothing special about any of them.
In Romo we Trust
Tebow has perfomed his miracles against bad D
So the obvious question will be the chicken or the egg. A bad D against Tebow or a good offense against the Denver D? Most likely the superior offense under Brady should win.You don’t keep giving up the ball to Brady and not expect him to capitalize. Then again, a good D has often kept Brady bottled up. Hell even our D managed a low scoring affair. If it comes down to a close game in the 4th qtr with Tebow in control, you sinners better all be in church next Sunday if you don’t believe in miracles.

I love watching Tebow
because even tho I’m sure there’s no way it’ll happen, it’d be nice to see the league (or at least some teams) revert back to a mostly running offense. All it takes is one team to be successful, then a bunch will try to copy.

There is just so much of it on TV and me and my friends’ facebooks.
"I hope you have a big trunk, 'cuz I'm putting my bike in it.
Why does everyone say he is shoving it down our throats?
He talks about it when interviewed. He wrote a book. But I don’t know anyone who is forced to listen to him. His touchdown celebration is not over the top, just focused on. Beats the heck out of the guys bumping and grinding when they score.
It seems that the media is shoving it down our throats, because they see him as such a freak. What a shame that he is the freak, and the Mike Vicks and Sam Hurds are the normal football players.
And I am an agnostic. I just can’t figure out what Tebow has done that makes people angry. Who would you rather have as a neighbor, or visiting your kid’s school, Tebow, or one of the countless players with, say, multiple kids and no history of marriage?

But you are right about him personally. He seems like a good guy, humble, says and does all the right stiuff. I don’t see how the Broncos will keep winning with his lousy stats, but time will tell.

Not looking too good for Hurd right now.

thats crazy
guess he got tired of getting paid special teams ace money.
i guess its good he’s not on the team anymore. i wonder if the team had any inclination about this. I guess they got lucky they didn’t want to pay that much for him.
Its pathetic
Hurd told the undercover that he was willing to pay $25,000 per kilo of cocaine and $450 per pound for the marijuana, the document states
First: innocent until proven guilty and right now the only version is the Police’s version, which always needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
But if true, come on man! Even if Hurd is making the league minimum, he’s making at least $600,000 a year! That’s more than enough money to start a legitimate business. Baffling.

getting out of touch with how much money you do actually make. we all do that to some degree. there is always someone else that makes so much less that we do.
so i can understand how Hurd doesn’t appreciate how much more he makes than the average american….
but i’m with you…stupid choice to get into drugs and drug dealing.
and from the dates it seems he was still technically a cowboy when they started investigating him (July) which makes me extra grateful we didn’t sign him.

According to Jensen’s reports, Hurd met with an undercover Homeland Security agent on Wednesday and attempted to set up a system by which he would purchase 5-10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week to distribute in Chicago. Here’s the real kicker — according to the complaint, Hurd said that he was already distributing four kilos of cocaine per week in the greater Chicago area with a co-conspirator, but that this amount wasn’t enough.

Philly is playing as if they’re in the playoffs, hoping that, if they win out, the Gmen and we stumble. Philly has been playing better football of late and even if they lose this week, they’ll still try to screw up our playoff hopes, and the Gmen at home, well,…….. we need to win out not only to get the division crown, but to instill confidence and pride in this team.
Wish you were here and comfortably numb.
I think they've gone into every game ready to play
The games they have lost are not because they weren’t ready. In my opinion anyway.
They know they have to win out so I dont see how this could qualify as a trap game.

I hope you're right. I just hope they're focusing on this game and not looking ahead to the Iggles and Gmen.

Here's a stat line that should make you a little more optimistic
Take a look at the offensive and defensive adjusted net passing yards per attempt
ANY/A = (Passing Yards + (Passing TDs)* 20 – (INTs thrown)* 45 – Sack Yards) / (Passing Attempts + Sacks):
Cowboys Offense: 7.3 (5th), Cowboys Defense: 5.8 (12th). ANY/A Differential: +1.5
Bucs Offense: 4.7 (24th), Bucs Defense: 7.1 (29th). ANY/A Differential: -2.4
The cumulative ANY/A differential of both teams is 3.9, which is the second highest differential in week fifteen behind only GB @ KC, which comes in at 5.6.

We better blow them out.

Philadelphia…Miami…Washington…Arizona…NY…Tampa?
Is our D getting dominated by a bigger O-line, or a case of the secondary getting over exposed due to all the blitzing schemes?
I have the solution:
“He hates these cans. Stay away from the cans.”—The Jerk
Clearly the DL needs an infusion of talent to help with the pass rush and take the pressure of Rat and Ware, but our secondary,
IMO, with the exception of Jenkins is average to poor and needs some major upgrades. I suppose that if you have a dominant pas rush, though, the secondary could be average, but most of our guys can’t cover anyone for 2 secs.
Wish you were here and comfortably numb.
And the DL can't sack the QB on every play.
Wish you were here and comfortably numb.
Good points
The D has made some spectacular plays throughout the year. This year, it seems like the collapse at that critical 4th qtr junction is becoming to much of a regularity. So I have to agree with you that new blood is a priority this off season. The problem is, will JJ agree with you.
Playing Devils advocate, the games that we’ve lost by has never been by a blow out(other than Phi) which may not warrant a complete overhaul of the D.
I'm still hopeful that JG controls the draft. He had a great first one. It's RR time to get his needs filled. I think JJ will just sign off on whatever they decide.
I’d love Still from Penn state in the first, then concentrate on DBs shortly after that unless a guy like Konz slips, then I’d be tempted. Chia says CB is deep and you can pick up a good one in the 3rd or 4th. He says safety is weak, but I really like both Mac Donald from USC, and Barron from Bama if they are there in the second. Don’t know what Chia thinks about them.
Wish you were here and comfortably numb.
well they only have to beat philly and giants to win the East
but i feel they need to beat Tampa for momentum to take into the last 2 games and maybe the playoffs

Question:
-Wouldn’t it be healthy if our Defense set a top end of maybe 7-10 blitz variations in a game and tried to stay under it?
-Go for max coverage. Help out the DB’s as much as possible. And maximize how hard to yards will be to go down the field.
-Eliminate our DB’s on Islands and play coverage.
STOP GIVING UP HUGE PLAYS.
A lot of good teams have bad D’s. Just play to outscore them.
I really think RR is trying everything he can think of to cover the blemishes in the secondary.
With max coverage, which sounds like a prevent D to me, we’d probably get barbecued because of zero pass rush.
Wish you were here and comfortably numb.
I don't know.
We can’t get to the passer with four. Thats the problem.

Exactly, but a defense will never be good until they can get to the QB with 4.

Amen, with our scheme it would be nice if could rely on all five to get some pressure.
Wish you were here and comfortably numb.
The more time you give the QB
The more likely coverages are blown. He isn’t always putting corners on islands, but if he doesn’t pressure QBs then they will pick apart the defense. There may not be blown covereages, but our secondary can’t cover anyone for 5+ seconds.

I think he's blitzing too many people at times.
Especially late. Maybe mix up the blitzes and use only a player here and there.
He sends the house and it never works. Seriously, keg.
There’s some wide open WR headed for a HUGE gain.
I’d like to see that start and make teams work harder for points. And take longer.
And trust the Offense to outscore them.

I have a post in the hopper you may find interesting
The Cowboys secondary (with few new additions) are far better than last season. Would the explanation for that be because Ryan is getting more pressure and harassing QBs?
There is a balance between pressure packages and coverage schemes, but when you can’t trust your secondary, you have to make QBs uncomfortable. And Ryan hasn’t blitzed as often in every game as he did the Giants. Against the eagles he barely blitzed…and we know what happened because of it.

Look forward to it.
And “Ugh” for the Eagles game.
I believe in a mixed blitz package used sometimes.
But he sold the farm against the Giants and what a mess.
Well, when healthy Jenkins has been far improved. And overall performance has improved. But it has often still been bad. :0

have any of you guys messed around with the playoff machine on ESPN.com?
There are actually a few different ways we can still get in the playoffs. Its crazy.

I am happy
that it seems as Tyron is gonna work out really well. i hope they switch him and Free next year and they dominate.
Now if only we could fix the interior. Nagy seems like he should improve. hat happened to Arkin? Kosier out next year? Are we going to look to draft Konz from Wisconsin. They should already have scouting on him since we drafted Nagy.
Konz would be fantastic, any of those Wisconsin OL, who declare, would be worth a shot at some point in the draft. I just don't think they draft a center in the first, but if he's there in the second, I'd
be tempted.
Wish you were here and comfortably numb.
Holley has been thrown to 7 times and has 7 catches.
Maybe he should play a little more?
IF you're gonna act like a turd, go lay in the yard...........Lock n Load
I need to start a Holley fan club
Exactly my point. On offense, he can make a play. Forget all other options, get him on the field more often and let him have some touches.
Even if he’s cut, I am sure, when given the opportunity on another team, he is going to be productive.
I’m praying for Holley in the off season.
This seems like it should be a case where he gets more chances.
Let him show he can keep it up. Maybe we have a real find here. If not, at least find out what he is.

Why would anyone draft a "right" tackle at the 9th pick
Alright gentlemen, time to admit you were wrong.
Knock on wood, but everything is going as planned. The youngest player in the league has already become dominant as a right tackle, and perhaps by next year will become one of the better left tackles in the league (Doug Free then becoming the best right tackle)

If he moves to LT,
he won’t be as dominant. He will have to block the grizzle bears, the best pass rushers in the world. As you know, sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you.
IF you're gonna act like a turd, go lay in the yard...........Lock n Load
I know you think he has all the tools though, right.
Wish you were here and comfortably numb.
I think he needs to bulk up, but yeah I expect him to move over in a year or two.
IF you're gonna act like a turd, go lay in the yard...........Lock n Load
No I didn't, I said he'll being going against the best pass rushers in the NFL.
Like anyone, he’ll get beat more often on the left side than the right.
IF you're gonna act like a turd, go lay in the yard...........Lock n Load
but he's not really a RT, he's really a LT
who played RT because he played there in college and we just signed Free to LT money. I think when the Cowboys selected him their long term plans for him was LT.
In Romo we Trust
No doubt
I had no issue and kept harping that he was a future LT, but would play RT only for a year or two

I never really had a problem with selecting Smith
I just thought that trading down and acquiring a lower rated tackle and a stud DE in the first round would have been more productive…killing two birds with one stone so to speak.
In Romo we Trust
But those other linemen aren’t exactly setting the world on fire

no, but they're good enough, especially at RT
That Nate Solder has been pretty solid for the Pats
In Romo we Trust
Good enough?
I bet none of them become as dominant a LT as Smith – some will never be good enough to be LTs.
Solder has been better than I thought, but no where near as good as Smith.

"There isn’t a better right tackle in football right now than Smith."
Boy you gotta love that. In his rookie year he’s performing even above our high expectations. He’s going to anchor this oline for years to come. Probably does get moved to the left side next year where with an offseason with Woicik and Hud, there won’t be a better OT in football, period.
Now if only some of our other young lineman can continue to develop, or maybe spend a 2nd or 3rd round pick next year on an interior lineman, and our oline will be in really good shape. Remaking the oline is one of Garrett’s biggest projects, and it isn’t going to happen in one season, but I think he’s already ahead of schedule, especially with Smith playing like he is.

Won't happen in one season...
But Football Outsiders have the Cowboys o- line ranked 4th in run blocking and 10th in pass protection.
I also have faith in Nagy, Costa, and Arkin developing nicely and improving our interior line next year even without an early round draft pick…Holland should improve under Woicik as well.

I think Garrett (and scouts, etc.) did more for this o-line in one year than has been done in nearly a decade.

true dat
it’s been our achilles heal for a long time. the revamped line has been up and down this year, but overall progressing in the right direction.
Plus we have a lot more depth now and going forward, with Nagy, Costa and Arkin as young players with a lot of room to develop, and even Kowalski stepping in at C and doing a fine job. In 1-2 years our line will go from being an aging question mark to a young strength of the team, which will allow the rest of the offensive weapons to flourish.
