Forward Thinking Vol III: We can beat the Pack

Forget the "Any Given Sunday" talk. We are good enough to beat the Packers. More importantly, we may get the chance. Here's why.

As discussed on BTB, the results of the NYG-NO game may have serious implications on our seeding. The Saints have a tough schedule remaining, as do the Giants, but two weeks ago I looked at the 49ers' schedule and laughed at it's doughy facade. Well, no more. We as Cowboys fans should be thinking about a first round bye, not winning our division. Wishful thinking, but we are fans, right?

Something happened with Vince Young's second interception tonight. An underrated team stomped out a charge from a VERY talented football team which was determined to save their season. The Niners have games against PIT, @ AZ and @ SEA (their other two games are the STL series,) so I could see two or even three (statistically considering division rival factor,) losses in their future. That leaves us a possible one loss buffer, which we could pull out.

Our losses to the Jets, Lions and Pats came in the last minute. A large Ryan mouth may have caused our only defeat that was ugly, at the hands of a discombobulated but motivated Eagle's team. Our remaining schedule is winnable. The Eagles should be a much easier game the second time around; they have nothing tangible to play for, have a brutal schedule and had their soul ripped out tonight :). Given our current wins over common opponents with the '9ers and Saints, a first-round-bye is doable.

Looking forward at our schedule, TB is making me look ridiculous after riding their bandwagon all offseason, and the Giants have already begun their late season slide. The Giants will play the Pack tough, I have no doubt. But they simply do not have the secondary or pass rush to slow down the Packer offense (Umenyiora will be out at least a couple of games,).

This is where chance comes in. If our secondary is healthy I would not hate our odds today in a game against the Pack. If our secondary is healthy in several weeks after we have continued meshing and scheming, I would begin to like our chances. I believe our offense-over-defense advantage is greater than theirs. ST play considered, at least we are making our field goals...Maybe we'll have a returner by then? *Edit* The weather in late January will greatly favor our running game over their passing game, also (Nod to BTB member football mensa for pointing that out,).

I would not be surprised to watch us go on a roll after the AZ game (a real dominant roll,) and secure the second or third seed. Things have been opened up before us, could not ask for much more considering the upheaval over the last 15 months. Most importantly, we are shaping up as a team as the season progresses. We have a ship and it has direction. >Sigh of relief<.
