Position Outlook- Safety
This is my latest installment of my series called Position Outlook, where I will be profiling each position and the players that Dallas has for that position. I will be giving MY opinion on the relative strength of the position, and how likely I think Dallas will be drafting that position in the 2012 NFL Draft. I will include All current players+ practice squad in this evaluation.
Now I will be using Stats from NFL.com(where applicable) and NFLDraftScout.com(where applicable) as the basis for my Evaluation. I will also be giving the Contract Info via Rotoworld.com. Once I have shown the players, I will rank them using the 5 star method as Follows:
5 Stars- Minimum Amount of Quality Starters at Position and At least one quality Backup for Position= BPA only if player is ranked significantly higher than any other player, and would not be a factor in FA
4 Stars- Minimum amount of Quality Starters at position, Unproven Depth = Address as BPA and FA for Depth
3 Stars- Minimum of one Quality player at starter, young, but unproven Depth=slight need, BPA in rounds 4-7 preferably, look to fill need in FA
2 Stars-Serviceable Starter(s), No Depth = solid need, BPA if within rounds 1-3 if not taken care of in Free Agency
1 Star- No Quality players at starter nor in depth= major need, Draft no later than 2nd round, would take precedence over BPA if Gap is close enough, and is a must target in Free Agency
The series so far:
QB position 3 stars
Offensive Tackle position 4 stars
Offensive Guard position 3 stars
Offensive Center position 5 stars
Cornerback position 2 stars
It seems that there is some confusion to the rankings. The grade is merely what I think the relative strength of the position itself is. I am not saying that any one group is "better than another" To Illustrate: I gave the Tackle position 4 stars, yet I gave the center position 5 stars. This is not to say that Costa and Kowalski are more talented than Doug Free, Tyron Smith and Jeremy Parnell. What the Rankings signify is the combination of TOTAL talent, age, and Contract status of ALL rostered players+Practice squad player FOR EACH Position. I am grading as a Group not individuality. While the Individual grades do impact the overall ranking, a "higher" ranking does not mean "better" or more talented. I hope that this clears up any confusion.
So with out Further ado, here is the Safety Depth Chart;

Practice Squad Players: None
Yeah that is right Dallas only has 4 players on the roster+PS as a safety....and if that gets you upset wait till you see how many WR's Dallas has on the PS, (it is 3 BTW)

As you can see Dallas has a couple of decent starting safeties, with a couple of young backups. However both Elam and Sensabaugh are on one year deals and there is no telling if they will be back next year I was however pleasantly surprised , yet disappointed with the Safety Depth. I was impressed with McCray's Speed(sud 4.5 is pretty good, but his explosion and Agility are lacking.... Church is the complete Opposite, poor Speed(4.6+ won't even catch Marion Barber in the open Field) but his Agility and Explosion are dare I say Lee-like. so As it stands with Sensabaugh and Elam not signed past this year, and no depth beyond Church and McCray, who while have shown talent, are deeply flawed,(though together they might be able to play to their strengths, thus limiting their weaknesses). I Have to give this position 2 stars, and that is mostly due too Elam's and Sensabaugh's play this year. So the safety position is the second position to get this: 3 Stars-Minimum of one Quality player at starter, young, but unproven Depth=slight need, BPA in rounds 4-7 preferably, look to fill need in FA
I now Leave you with the Poll, as Always I welcome an Comments and Critiques that you guys have....

Safety looks right
I couldn’t dissagree more with your center ranking. Costa is not an NFL calibur starting center. He is getting manhandled every game. I don’t know what it is you see. And we don’t know anything about Kowalski.
Well Costa has performed at an average level for a rookie
and Kowalski (in the times he has been pressed in to Service) has performed decently…
Considering that both are undrafted players with a combined 1 full offseason of training….I think they have performed very Well….
Here’s a theoretical play from 2010: Snap. Tony takes 7 step drop. Tony looks left at Miles, who is doubled, and looks right to where Roy Williams should be…but instead sees Colombo on his back and a Defensive End foaming at the mouth jumping over Marc’s carcass. Tony proceeds to run like hell and look for Witten

Now, if somebody doesn’t agree with that, that’s cool. I also don’t agree with the fact that I don’t have $10 million in my bank account. But the fact that I don’t agree with it doesn’t make it any less true.

If you present it in that context I guess they have held their own,
But I honestly havn’t heard a single person who has thought Costa was a long term answer at center. So in that respect I could’t see how you rated the position a 5.
if you are unsure Coakey
I would invite you to reread the Post…
I added in the PFF grades that OCC has put up in his Grading the Cowboys posts for Costa…
Costa has been inconsistant…without a doubt….but he has done well for what he is…..

A career backup? haha

Costa is below average. Period. Need a new c next year.
Jerry is the end all in Dallas.
I would agree to a point
Costa is slightly below average. Period. Needs another offseason of work fornew cnext year.
fixed it for ya though…haha

I've read scouts say the issue with Costa is short arms.
That allows the defender to get into his body and move him out on his pass sets.
that is true
but with his explosiveness he can mitigate that to a degree….

Costa sucks and he isnt too smart, I either want a stud athletic center or a smart one
Bruce Carter+Sean Lee=BRUCE LEE!!!!
RDD=REAL DEAL DEMARCO!!!!
Is Costa the answer at centre.
IDK . I do feel more confident than when Gerode was there. I liked what little we saw from Kowalski , but way to early to get a real read. The middle of the line is still a problem, so finding an upgrade wouldn’t bother me.
Draft a Safety for sure.
Like the safety position better than last year, but with the lack of depth and no one on the PS it should be a middle round pick depending on value.
Here is to hoping we can snag Leron Landry from the 'Skins
Guy is in a contract year and I think he would possibly make a nice addition to the team. Not really any safeties in this year’s draft anyway.

Safety = 2 stars.
Center = 1 star. It’s getting lower each week because Costa gets worse each week.
I hope we can draft Eric Reid from LSU 2013. That is what you want in a safery.
Jerry is the end all in Dallas.
I want Brandon Taylor son
watch, he will be one of the best S’s to come out this year in a weak safety class
people will go in front of him and bust out while Taylor goes later and becomes a good NFL starter
