DLine: Ryan has a lot of work in front of him.
From the moment in which I finished writing The Schematic Advantage of Having a Ryan, I started thinking that having him in charge of the defense wasn't going to be a matter of giving him the current players and that his schemes would work. Some moves would need to be done, but what kind of moves was a nice question, which I started mulling this post.
An analysis of the Cowboys defensive linemen, what happened to the Phillips-Pasqualoni led DLine and what Ryan has which he can work with.
Let's start with the DLine:
Main scheme:
| LDE | NT | RDE |
|---|---|---|
| Marcus Spears | Jay Ratliff | Igor Olshansky |
| Stephen Bowen | Josh Brent | Jason Hatcher |
| Jason Hatcher | Sean Lissemore |
The 2010 version of the Cowboys was a 2 version defense, the main scheme and the 4-man fronts of the Nickel and Dime and they used them in close to 50% of the snaps.
The main scheme was mostly used when teams deployed a FB and TE, or 2-TE sets, heavy packages. Included 4 LBs and 4 DBs
Its purpose is stopping the run and they do it well.
Nickel and Dime:
| LDE | DT | DT | RDE |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anthony Spencer | Stephen Bowen | Jason Hatcher | DeMarcus Ware |
| Victor Butler | Jay Ratliff | Josh Brent | Victor Butler |
| Jason Hatcher | Sean Lissemore | Sean Lissemore |
This scheme was mostly used when opposing teams deployed 3 and 4 receiver sets. 2 or 3 DBs would run in.
This one is designed to rush 4 or 5 guys, most of Scandrick's rushes come from this scheme.
Analysis:
What do you see? In 2010 I saw 2 schemes and each one couldn't do what the other could.
The Cowboys were in deep do-do.
What happened to the Phillips-Pasqualoni led DLine?
I'm of the opinion that they had better years, not attacking DLines like the ones of the Packer, Jets or Ravens, but consistent and strong in fundamentals lines, but that was off last year.
Last year they had fundamentals problems in pretty much every area of the game and that has everything to do with the coaches and players that allowed themselves to wander off the track. Which is why I don't think that Ryan will ask for Shaun Rogers to be brought in.
They went from a main package that could perform a solid job in passing situations to offenses forcing the main scheme to the field with a heavy package with the idea of throwing the ball. They went from a Nickel that could make plays against the run to Offenses deploying 3 and 4 wideouts with the idea of running the ball.
That didn't happen once or twice, there are many examples of such an occurance in every game.
The Phillips defense is a straight forward simple one if the players can't execute their roles with efficiency. When he was with the Chargers, Igor Olshansky was the same current self, a player that can't rush the passer, but he had 2 guys that could in Jamal Williams and Luis Castillo. In 2006 Williams, Castillo and Jacques Cesaire formed a unit that got to the QB for 14.5 sacks.
And they did it from the main scheme. Wade Phillips would only make small changes to his main scheme, which would always include a 3-man front, and would give his starters some breathers on a per series basis.
The Cowboys haven't been able to do that, the change ups of schemes were good for a while but teams caught up with the tendencies, and when 2010 came up and the fundamentals were down, teams were up and ready to exploit them.
Ryan needs an improved unit.
One of the things that I kept seeing when I watched the Browns games in 2010, was how he would make small changes to the base package that he would deploy at the start of a series and an example would be:
Starts with the 3-4.
Pulls a DE, plugs an additional DB (2-4).
Pulls the NT, adds Shaun Rogers (2-4).
Pulls a LB, adds another DLineman (3-3).
Among many others.
Ryan's defense may be more complicated and less predictable, but if your unit can't play the run or pass with consistency, it's going to be exploited all the same. It requres proper execution, to a lesser degree, but it's still a requirement.
A step forward is going to be one of Ryan's and Baker's strong points of emphasis: their belief and enforcement of fundamentals in their charges. That by itself means an improvement over the Cowboys DLine in 2010, but how much better can they get?
Marcus Spears won't become a better pass rusher, the same applies to Olshansky. Improved fundamentals may bring them back to previous levels in which they helped players around them to make plays, but on an island you can only expect that they will push their assignments.
Bowen and Hatcher are the best bets, but how much higher is their ceiling?
And there's a lot of hope when we talk about the Cowboys defense in 2011, hope that Bowen and Hatcher will improve, hope that Brent is going to improve, hope that Lee is going to become a player in the middle, hope that Spencer will come back to 2009 form, hope that James and Brooking can last another year and hope that every DB will improve from an awful 2010.
How many of them can you really expect to become reality?
I'll go with what I know, the Cowboys DLine would benefit greatly by adding another DLineman that can play the run and pass, if that means taking a new DLineman with the first pick you know that I'm all in favor of taking one.
And it's crystal clear.

Well thought out assesment.
I generally believe we will add at least 1 DL in this draft. I just hope it is not in the 1rst round. I really like Austin from UNC and Wilkerson from Temple is growing on me due to Chia’s constant pimping(I kid Chia I kid). Phil Taylor and Kendrick from Hampton are also intriguing prospects. I am excited about Ryan as our DC and Baker sounds like a good hire as well, but of course I will take a strong wait and see attitude.
The problem that I have with them
Is that they’re linear guys.
Look at our best defensive players, Ware and Ratliff, they can do it all, strength, quickness and technique. Look at the best players League wide. They aren’t linear, you said it yourself, Ngata is huge but he’s quick and explosive, by now he also knows how to use his hands, the combination makes him an extremely hard to defend guy.
Cameron Jordan is versatile and looks ready to play a prominent role. That’s why I want him.
Some of those 2nd Round guys may develop with time into complete players, but how long is it going to take? The Cowboys need help this year.
Arnold, almost 5 years of good memories, you'll be missed.

Hatcher
I think is already at the top of him ceiling, he is not going to get any better. I do have hopes for Bowen. Mostly because a lot of people think he is a player, I hope they are right
drop back in rd 1 and pick up another 2nd
Aldon Smith OLB Missouri
Rahim Moore FS UCLA
Marcus Cannon OT TCU
Kenrick Ellis DT Hampton
Clint Boling OG Georgia
Mike Mohamed ILB California
Lee Smith TE Marshall
DL is probably the safest pick at the #9 spot …plus can be an immediate contributor on defense for a rookie..not to mention hatcher and olshansky will probably be gone ..hopefully
In this Draft, it's the safest pick
Guys like Fairley, Dareus and Jordan are better prepared for the NFL than pretty much any other rookie.
And that includes every OLineman.

Excited about Rob Ryan
Like you showed in this and your previous, and most excellent post, Rob Ryan will do some interesting things with the front 7. I think he will get the best out of the guys by utilizing their strengths. I can see formations with 4 down linemen (Ware, Ratliff, Spears, Bowen), or 3 or 2 big DL and Ware, Spencer, and Butler rushing the passer, etc. I am excited.
I do have a problem answering your poll though.
I want to draft a DL in the first 3 rounds.
I think Bowen and Spears are back but Hatcher likely isn’t.
Thankfully the Packers won, but there is still tons to worry about and things ain’t gravy.
"I am a true believer. Anthony Spencer will have 7 or more sacks in 2011 and Stephen Bowen can ball!" - Kegbearer
"Football is an incredible game. Sometimes it's so incredible, it's unbelievable."
- Tom Landry
That's what I was thinking
And I posed this as a question in another post.
But it seems as if ‘position’ along the DL is somewhat a moot point with all the fronts/alignments our new DC will use. That said, we are probably losing at least 2 and possibly all 3 of our FA DE’s and will have to restock somehow. It’ will be up to RR to explain the prototype. Interesting that a new coach could have so much influence, but JG and JJ aren’t going to make this pick(I hope).
We live life forwards and understand it backwards
My guess is that we will see...
… A lot of Rob Ryan’s 3-4, 3-3 and not much of the 4 man fronts that we’ve seen in the past.
With the 3-3, you just don’t need to change much of your main package, you can keep the same front players, only pulling an ILB.
And that’s a problem, fundamentals may make them better players than what the DLineman were in 2010, but how much better can they get? And how much hope is involved in your expectations? The Cowboys need at least one DLineman that can play the run and pass. Someone versatile that can play in Ryan’s schemes. That’s why I’m high on Cameron Jordan.

Whether it's Jordan...
or someone else, thinking about Ryan coming onboard, then reading your great breakdown, the all-round DL player’s the way to go. That, getting ILB depth, get safety shored up, a couple of guys on the OL, some WR depth, in draft and FA combined, and maybe we can get revamped over the next 2-3 years and make this part of stabilizing a longer-term plan. And by revamped I mean solid starters across O/D/ST, depth and player transitioning structure in place.
Something tells me someone, not mentioning names, might have something like a plan.
Point After (rule change): You score, you kick. Debate welcomed.
Excited to see the young 'uns
Lissemore and Brent should be fun to watch grow up this year. They look hungry and strong. Maybe they will develop under a different coach into something formidable.

Yup, really hoping those 2 step up this year.
Brent looked good last year, I didn’t really see Lissy much to form a opinion.
