I really believe the cowboys should trade TE Jason Witten for a first round draft Pick or a high second.
Let me explain
First when is the last time a team has won the Super Bowl with TE being a major contributing receiver. Dont say Dallas Clark cause he lines up split 75% of the time, or dont say Green Bay cause they lost their Starting TE week 5. You really only need an adequate pass catching TE to force a line backer to pay a little attention to him. If you look at the top 5 TE statistically all 5 of their teams had non winning records. And top 8 of 10 TE had non winning records. REC TE are not that important for the overall well being of a team .What you really need is a TE to run block.
Martellus Bennet is just as good a run blocker as Jason Witten. Also we have John Phillips coming back and he can block just as well as the two I mentioned above. Also both player are younger and cheaper then Witten.
Third Jason just doesnt have the quickness or the agility to be a true play maker such as Dallas Clark or Antonio Gates. I know everybody can see that his lateral quickness is really lacking and because of this Witten is really easy to bring down.
Trading Jason would help open up the field for true wide receivers to make plays. Thus meaning more big plays. Tony Romo would not be eyeing Witten before he snaps the ball.
Last but not least the Cowboys need young impact players and this is the Cowboys one asset that could return quality back without hurting the Cowboys that much.
In Summary TE's are not that important, We have Depth that is young and adequate enough to be productive, we have a player who is in his late Prime(Witten) that could fetch us quality picks and We could not say that about any other player on the Cowboys.
