Sources: Ray Horton To Sign With Cardinals, Cowboys Keep Looking For Secondary Coach

ESPN's Adam Schefter twittered earlier today that it appears to be a done deal that the Steelers secondary coach Ray Horton will sign on as the new defensive coordinator with the Cardinals. In a sign that talks may have progressed further than previously known, Horton may bring former Steelers CB Deshea Townsend - who played under Horton in Pittsburgh - to Arizona with him as an assistant coach.

The Cowboys had also been interested in signing Horton, but becoming defensive backs coach in Dallas would have been a lateral move, and therefore unlikely.

However, Dallas' interest in Horton does signal that Garrett is looking for at least some degree of change in the secondary coaching ranks. Dave Campo's future in Dallas is currently unclear and according to David Moore from the DMN, Campo has told associates that he is uncertain whether the Cowboys want to retain him on the defensive staff. No word either on Brett Maxie's future as the DB coach in Dallas, although the Cowboys did refuse the Texan's request for an interview, which could be a good sign for him.

Who do you think the Cowboys should be looking at as a coaching option for the secondary?

[UPDATE 5:15 PM EST: Cardinals make it official and hire Ray Horton, making him the 23rd coordinator working for one of the four teams in the NFC West since 2008.]

well

I like Campo as a man, he is just a bad coach recently so show the man respect and fire him if your going to replace him
because to treat him like this is kinda f’d up

get rid of Maxie Pad and Campo

Fire Campo

How much money would Primetime require and can he co-exist with Ryan?

Interesting thought, but would he even be interested?

Jerry will take care of Campo and should IMO.

Give Campo two good safeties, a strong pass rush and he will all of a sudden be a good DB coach again. No coach could look good with the safeties Dallas put on the field last year. Blaming Campo for the DB play is like blaming the QB coach because Quincy sucked. They didn’t address the glaring problem at safety in the off season and it bit them in the ass.

speaking of safeties........

I think that it’s amazing how the media has turned on Polamalu. Before the playoffs, he was the best thing that’s ever been created. Yesterday I heard them saying that he looked slow and a little over-weight. He did have a pretty bad game, but these media guys are hilarious how they turn on you. Truth is, Polamalu has always been a free-lancer and can get burned on occasion. He just happened to get burned a lot Sunday.

Ditto

I think I recall Baby Ben throwing the ball to the wrong uni a couple of times…

Yeah funny how that works

these guys will jump on anyone to generate the buzz. Not sure these guys would have appreciated the same treatment in their playing days…

Jeez, take everything the media puts out with a grain of salt.

Rothlisberger was an elite QB in the league of Manning and Brady, until he lost the Superbowl. Rodgers is now better than Favre because he won a Superbowl. If all 3 careers ended today, who would have the best chance at the Hall Of Fame? That’s right, Polamalu.

by CaliFanInTx on Feb 9, 2011 12:38 PM CST up reply actions

I don't know about that......

I think that Manning and Brady are definite Hall of Famers. Polamalu is amazing but the Hall of Fame always loves QB’s first.

by texstar on Feb 9, 2011 1:07 PM CST up reply actions

You miss-read....Was only comparing Rothlisberger, Rodgers, and Polamalu.

I agree with Manning and Brady being definite Hall of Famers. In fact, Manning and Brady are the only 2 active elite Quarterbacks. Something else the league seems to play up these days…you can only reach elite status over extended time.

On Troy P...

Give the credit to the GB coaching staff for putting together a scheme that exposed Troy’s weakness – which is coverage. If you take Troy away from the box, his production declines as he’s no Ed Reed when it comes to coverage.

Think about it, Roy Will #31(someone we all know very well) enjoyed some stellar seasons with our beloved Cowboys, because Zimm kept him in the box and let him run wild (yes, we still had Woody). However, once that fat phugg Parcells came, we switched to a 34 with the cover 2 shell and people quickly turned on Roy saying he couldn’t cover. While that was very true, you have to put your players in position to succeed. That’s what a good coach does.

by BK Arsonist on Feb 9, 2011 2:27 PM CST up reply actions

Very nice points

but I think RW’s other problems were that the game change to demand more coverage from SS and he was no longer a decisive factor in the box either…

Don't believe everything you think.

Roy Williams #31

Remember, during Tuna’s first season, the ’Boys still played the 4-3, and I believe we had the #1 D in the league (2003)… the troubles for Roy started in 2004 after Woodson got hurt and the Cowboys moved to that Cover 2 scheme.

by BK Arsonist on Feb 9, 2011 2:44 PM CST up reply actions

Oh I know Woodson helped him a ton

I was just pointing out that in the meantime, the league has changed and RW lost that beastliness in the box, making him essentially useless.

Don't believe everything you think.

media didn't turn on Polamalu

The media from all accounts I’ve read or heard attribute his below par play to his injury and nothing else. I don’t think thats turning on him.

by Terry on Feb 9, 2011 3:01 PM CST up reply actions

well you're hearing some different media than me then........

I’ve heard them say that he’s lost a step-slower and a little heavy. Also, some of them have even said with his style of play, if he’s on the decline.

by texstar on Feb 9, 2011 11:00 PM CST up reply actions

whoever is saying that is clueless and shouldn't have a job in the media

because it’s obvious they don’t know what the hell they are talking about. When Troy is healthy, he’s easily one of the best defensive playmakers in the NFL. All season he has been playing through pain with an achilles injury.

From experience I can tell you it’s extremely difficult to just jog with a sore achilles let alone run hard. The fact he was even out there playing says a lot about the guy.

I wasn't saying I agreed with them........

I just find it quite fascinating how they are talking about Polamalu now.

by texstar on Feb 10, 2011 10:14 AM CST up reply actions

I like Campo and his history with the Cowboys makes me give him lots of leeway, but he did a poor job last year.

I agree with you about the safety position, but doesn’t Campo have some blame for not “pressing” for better Safety help?…and if he did pound his fist on the table for better players, but was rebuked, then why didn’t alter the scheme knowing that he had a problem at Safety. He should have been playing zone in the beginning to cover up some inadequacy. He also let Jenkins confidence go to sh*t…that’s bad coaching. The “Quincy” analogy doesn’t fly because the secondary regressed from the previous year.

Campo has a guaranteed contract, he’s not going anywhere, but his duties will likely change.

by CaliFanInTx on Feb 9, 2011 12:32 PM CST up reply actions

The whole D regressed last year.

Campo can still coach, IMO.

He went on record saying Ball was going to be really good last year

I blame Campo as much as Wade for their utterly wrong evaluation of our secondary…

by thejanusman on Feb 9, 2011 3:39 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe it wasn't the evaluation of either of them ...

but the gospel according to Jerry.
If Jerry determined that he couldn’t/didn’t want to tackle any comers in FA (and it was painfully obvious we needed OL and FS), perhaps Wade and Campo were told to suck it up and work with what they had. At this point, they’ve got to tow the company line or upset the apple cart because proclaiming suspect players as ‘crap’ won’t fix anything, even if it did become painfully obvious to all over the course of the season. I would fault them for not scheming against the deficiencies, as CaliFan pointed out.

No Primetime, PLEASE.

If Garrett and Ryan thinks Deion is an option, Dallas is in big trouble.

I don't blame Campo

I seriously doubt Ray Horton or any other DB coach could have done much with that horrible safety talent. Give him two good safeties and I bet all of sudden he becomes a really good secondary coach.

Considering how bad the Steelers secondary has looked recently, especially in the SB, it’s amazing the Cards or us wanted Horton at all.

Any chance for Dennis Thurman?

I saw where the Jets wouldn’t let the Raiders interview him, but maybe the Ryan brothers could work it out..
