Cowboys Top 10 Biggest Draft Successes Of The Jerry Jones Era: #1
Our continuing series looking at the Top 10 Biggest Draft Successes Of The Jerry Jones Era rolls on with #1. The guidelines - Must have been drafted during Jerry Jones' era (1989 - present), and generally needs to be a player chosen in the 3rd round or later. Anybody above that was expected to succeed. It's not a list of the best players, but a list of the best value to the team, based on contributions and when they were drafted. Also, certain intangibles can be thrown into the mix.
1. Jay Ratliff (2005, 7th round, #224, DT, Auburn)
Jason Ferguson's injury at the beginning of the 2007 season might be one of the best things to happen to the Cowboys recently. That's when Jay Ratliff took over at NT, and he hasn't looked back since. We're putting Jay at the top of our list because of how good he has been, how good we think he'll continue to be, and because he was drafted all the way down in the 7th round.
Since the Rat took over in 2007, he's been to the Pro Bowl three out of four years. He plays a position that is rarely known for sacks because a 3-4 NT is constantly double-teamed, yet he's already accumulated 25 sacks. He's relentless in the middle, with one of the quickest first steps you'll ever see on a big man. He's also durable, he has only missed one game since taking over as the starter.
What was once an afterthought in the 2005 draft - a guy taken way down in the 7th round and initially was playing DE - is now being recognized as one of the best NTs in the league. Jay Ratliff has gone from unknown to star. And he still has some years left to raise his stat totals, and show his dominance.
Congrats Jay.
Miscellaneous stats: Has 12 passes defensed in his career. He's forced four fumbles, and has recovered 12 fumbles so far.
OCC: Of the 1,499 NFL players drafted in the seventh round since 1989, only two made the All Pro Team, Jay Ratliff was one of them. Similarly, 7th round picks drafted since 1989 have gone to the Pro Bowl a combined six times. Ratliff accounts for three of those Pro Bowl nods.

12 recovered fumbles says it all to me...
He’s playing through the whistle, not missing opportunities. Champ.
To this day I have no idea what that woman was singing about. Like, literally no idea. I don’t know what a hollaback girl is. But I have to imagine it is a foul, disease ridden thing that wears too much make-up just to cover up the fact that it is a forty-seven year-old fish dog. – Family guy

this is my dude
I love rooting for the underdog, the 7th round pick who is All Pro
I think Tom Brady is the best QB ever, thats my opinion
guys like Brady and Ratliff get overlooked but look at what they have accomplised
if there was a redraft Ratliff would be a top 5 pick
I am so thankful to have the Rat, easily one of my all time favorite players

Jay Ratliff is everything that's right with this team
Underdrafted overperformed. Never takes a play off, never quits.
He’s got talent no one else could see and a lunch-pail attitude to never stop, never slow down, and maximize every bit of skill he has.
Mike Jenkins could learn a thing or two from Jay Ratliff.
The Ohio State Buckeyes are your Sugar Bowl champions... and for the 7th year in a row Michigan still sucks.

A Beast and a Gentlemen
Rat is what is right about the team sometimes. Like Miles got to start when Roy got hurt and kept the role. He got his shot when Jason got hurt and he as made the most of it. Hopefully Choice gets his shot soon and can perform……wait…what ……..he as already performed well against good defenses……..well I guess you cannot be right all the time.
Great guy and a great player too .
thanks king Rat,love watching you play.

"how bout them cowboys"!!!
Here is a revised list - supported by PFF's player grades
My list, using the PFF.com for the data, including their “CarAV” (a metric representing career value.)
I have already posted, as have others, that Mark Stepnoski’s omission is a travesty. I have him at #4, how he can be off the list with 5 pro-bowls, while Doug Free and Patrick Crayton are on just makes no sense to me. The other “forgotten man” in my view is Dexter Coaxley – 3 PB’s and 9 years as a starter. The last couple weren’t with the Cowboys, but all his PB years were.
If we are rating the DRAFT, then Ron Stone with 3 Pro Bowls from around the same spot as Bradie James surely has to be there. Now he did absolutely zero with Dallas so as a practical matter I have omitted him, but that was more an issue with the coaching than the draft.
So who comes off? I really like Doug Free, and I am confident he will be a mainstat, but its way too early to have him in there. And its not like he was a 7th rounder. Patrick Crayton was a great return for a 7th rounder, but he was barely a starter for most of his time.

Here is the revised list with a readable table
Had to do it at a fanpost as fanposts allow tables to be edited.

Sorry that table is unreadable
Can anyone advise how to fix? I’ve looked on the site but couldn’t find any help files to assist.
"Where's Woody? - We need another Darren Woodson
No doubt...
Jay’s one to be considered for top spot. Depends on the weight accorded the determining factors by each individual. It’s a judgment call, an opinion.
Overall, not a bad list. Just plain wrong.
And I say that in jest and not, as we’ll all have our own takes on who’s missing, the why’s and all the rest. But it was an entertaining trip down memory lane, despite the wrong turns the path took. Whoops, there I go again saying wrong when I should say opinionated.
Weltschmerzen.
My $.02's worth $.00.
Odd list
While they weren’t drafted, the FAs picked up after the draft are in a similar vein to drafting. Honorable mention should go to Jerry for Austin and Romo somewhere.
