Mosley: Cowboys want to trade down from #9 spot
ESPN NFC East blogger Matt Mosley tells Ben and Skin that the Cowboys want to trade down from the No. 9 spot in the draft. He says they don't see that much difference between Tyron Smith and other top OTs like Castonzo and Solder, and could also take Prince Amukamara or JJ Watt. He also blamed some of the recent bad drafting on Wade, and says Garrett is going to let the scouts do their work and listen to them, and is earning "rave reviews" for how he's handling things so far.
My question all along has been how much difference is there between Smith and the other OTs. If the difference isn't that significant, then I would favor trading down, getting one of the other OTs or a guy like Amukamara, Watt or Aldon Smith a few picks later, and adding more picks later in the draft.

it is the right move if.....
they dont see much diff in the OT’s and
they dont think that JJ Watt or Prince (or who ever else is avail. at 9 will be game changers……

Well.....my days of not taking you seriously have certainly come to a middle

I agree, not much difference in the OTs,
but don’t get cute miss out on all of them. It always scares me when Jerry gets in a trading frenzy.

figure either down to
14 Rams
16 Jax
17 Pats
18 SD
One of those spots, lower and i agree with you

One of the top OTs will still be available
or Watt, Amukamara, A. Smith… even at 18 someone worthwhile will still be available, so I don’t see much risk in trading down to the late teens…
Give me an offensive lineman and an extra 2nd rounder
and I will be a very happy man.

Carimi
Trade down three times, but make sure Carimi has a star on his helmet next year.

If we do trade down
I hope we milk it for all it’s worth. Sure would be nice to get a team to overpay a second this year or first next year. A bidding war would be nice, especially for a QB.

If this is true, then Jerry doesn't think any of the OTs can play day one.

not necessarily... in fact I'd say the opposite
It’s generally agreed that Castonzo and Carimi are more NFL ready and able to step in and start day one at RT than Smith is. He’s got higher upside but isn’t as mature or experienced. So what this says to me is that they do value the ability to start right away and the fact that OTs who will go off the board later can start right away reduces the value of picking Smith at the very top of the tier.
Jerry is a dumbass.
Screw him.

How dare you say that …
Oh wait you’re right.

Now THIS is what I love to read..
I started out with nothing and still have most of it left
That is what they said when Wade took over also
seems like they are passing off blame onto the old guy
Sean Lissemore = The next Bruce Smith
This is stupid
The cowboys are horrible when scouting talent in the middle of the draft (especially the 3rd round). Good teams rarely get to pick in the top 10, where you can get players who can make a huge difference, instead he wants to move out of it for what? And extra 3rd? If that’s the case Jerry might as well call up NE and tell them he’ll just give them the #9 pick for their #17, straight up, at least it would save him some embarrassment from having to actually use and extra pick we would get on a player….so that 3 years down the road we can all be on here talking about how so-and-so was such a horrible pick. This should be interesting…

Yeah, Jason Witten sure was a horrible 3rd round pick
depending on who they trade with they could easily get a 2nd rounder, but just assuming there was a 3rd or 4th rounder in the deal, I’d take another “horrible picks” like any of these…
Round 4 Doug Free
Round 4 Tashard Choice
Round 3 Jason Hatcher
Round 4 Marion Barber
Round 4 Chris Canty
Round 3 Jason Witten
Round 4 Bradie James
Sure they’ve missed on some mid-rounders (what team hasn’t?), but to say there’s no value in a 3rd round pick makes no sense, sorry.
I love people who argue with you, but only mention the positives that HELP their argument....be a man, list them all
Dallas Cowboys 3rd round picks:
2010 – None
2009 – Jason Williams, Robert Brewster
2008 – None
2007 – James Marten
2006 – Jason Hatcher
2005 – None
2004 – Stephen Peterman
2003 – Jason Witten
2002 – Derek Ross
Want me to continue?? We’ve hit on ONE guy in the past, oh 9 years…..I wouldn’t call Hatcher a “good” pick, not horrible, but not good.
I said 3rd round scouting, not 4th, so those points that you made mean nothing, obviously teams have certain ratings as far as the rounds they think players will go in, or are worthy of, and it’s a lot different scouting players round by round, huge difference between 3rd and 4th round scouting when it comes to the draft….in fact, about 32 players difference.

you said they were "horrible scouting talent in the middle rounds"
4th does count as the middle last I checked (and could be one of the picks we’d receive in a trade, which makes it relevant to your point).
your point was that having a 3rd round pick is basically useless because it will inevitably be a horrible pick. that’s essentially what you said. I can appreciate some cynicism because they have missed some middle rounds, but I think that’s just a stupid position to take.
I pointed out that we have had numerous successful picks in the middle rounds to demonstrate that it isn’t always a waste. I acknowledge that they missed some but I don’t need to list all the misses to prove the point that there are some hits, that getting an extra 3rd round pick has value.
I don’t disagree that they haven’t done a great job of picking in the 3rd round, but I totally disagree that getting an extra 3rd rounder thru a trade down is a useless waste that we might as well not even use, according to your logic.
If we're going to move
I want it to be with NE @ 17…..if the Cowboys don’t think T. Smith is that special of a player, and are willing to move, then might as well make it a move that could net you 2 first round picks and an extra 3rd.
Dallas’ 9th and 40th (1750 pts) for NE 17th, 28th, 92nd (1742)

that sounds good to me
Raf at Cowboys Nation has a good breakdown of possible trade partners, and he breaks down a possible NE trade as:
Dallas’ 9th and 140th for NE 17th plus one each of their 2nd and 3rd round picks.
I think an extra 2nd and 3rd would be great, and would give us the ammo to move back up into the late first if we really needed to.
It looks more and more like a trade down will happen
If they address the OL in the first, I can live with that. I just hope it’s Smith, Carimi, Castonzo or Sherrod. Solder will not be ready for a few years if at all.
Goose has Solder as #2 OT
according to rabble’s new post Gosselin has Solder as the #2 OT, which is based on actual war room rankings from around the league. So apparently actual team scouts are higher on him than a lot of pundits and amateur draftniks. I just don’t see how teams would have him ranked #2 overall if they think he won’t be ready for a few years if at all.
