Play Your Position: Cowboys Draft Picks And Depth Charts (Offense)

Stay connected for news and updates

Let's take a look at the impact each of the draft picks had on the roster at their respective positions.

OL - The tackle group just got a major upgrade with Tyron Smith moving Marc Colombo out of the starting lineup, and possibly off the team. Sam Young and Robert Brewster remain unknown quanitities that will get some camp competition. David Arkin, ranked #100 on Gosselin's board, provides the youth at the guard position and possibly a backup tackle as he played both at Missouri State. I would expect to see an effort to re-sign Kosier and probably keep Bigg Davis for another season. Phil Costa and seventh round pick Bill Nagy provide competition for backup behind Gurode. Nagy lost his starting job to injury in the great offensive line lineage of Wisconsin.

QB -  No real surprises here. The Cowboys are very content with Tony Romo and Jon Kitna being 1 and 2 next season. Insert Martellus Bennett joke here. Stephen McGee will keep his eye on the UDFA haul, but appears to be safe. As a UDFA QB, the other professional leagues are going to look attractive the longer the lockout lasts.

RB - Major shakeup here. Pretty sure this draft signifies the end of the Marion Barber III era in Dallas. The surprise of taking Demarco Murray in the 3rd round is that Tashard Choice's roster spot is in serious doubt, in my opinion. You don't draft a third round running back to be third on the depth chart. Choice might have been shopped while the league was open for business. A response would have led Dallas to this strategy. Projected depth chart: 1-F. Jones, 2-Demarco Murray, 3-Lonyae Miller (expect UDFA competition).

FB - Chris Gronkowski has training camp competition in Shaun Chapas. I think the impact of this position is lessened greatly with the return from injury of H-back John Phillips.

WR - Miles Austin and Dez Bryant are starting the season and the Boys need someone to allow them to move on from Roy Williams. Kevin Ogletree, AFL star Troy Bergeron, and new draft pick Dwayne Harris are now in that mix, plus Manuel Johnson, Jessy Holley and speedster Teddy Williams. We might not see Roy Williams released until one of these guys emerges during training camp.

TE - No news here unless Bennett is traded for a future pick once the lockout is lifted. Witten-Phillips-Bennett: we are dominant here.
