Around SBN: 7 Important Questions About The Heat Vs. Celtics Series

The Evidence Says: No Square Pegs in Round Holes.

As I kept saying in my previous fanpost analyzing the Draft (Here), I knew little about the 2nd day picks, Bruce Carter and DeMarco Murray, but understood the rationale behind the picks.

So, as I'm not one that doesn't like to regurgitate what others say about a player, I started a process of collecting game tape from their teams and focused on them in every snap. It wasn't just a matter of seeing their best games (which by itself is really hard to do, especially when they play smaller schools), so I payed special attention to their games against "bigger" Colleges in 2010 and 2009 due to how those games are easier to get my paws on and because those include some of their best and poorer performances (Carter: Miami x 2, Georgia Tech x 2, Pittsburgh, LSU and VT. Murray: Texas x 2, Nebraska x 2, Missouri, Baylor and Miami.).

What I saw in those games is what follows, an analysis of both guys in the following categories: Assets, Questions, Fitting them in and Reminds me of.

Star-divide

Bruce Carter, ILB.

Ncf_i_bcarter1_400_medium

Assets:

  • Versatile. Can attack gaps in run support. Blitz. Cover TEs from the slot. Drop back and cover hook zones. Shadow the QB or RB.
  • Great pursuit LB. Fast, quick and explosive. The guy can run and change directions.
  • Aggressive. Will go for the kill shot when he's well positioned to do so. Will jump routes in coverage. He's such a good athlete that he could take some risks.
  • Knows how to use his tools. Known for making pretty and non-pretty plays. He can make plays even from the wrong angle.
  • Good use of hands (against WRs, TEs, RBs and FBs).

Questions:

  • Instincts. Comes from Butch Davis' read-and-react kind of D in North Carolina, in which he was supposed to wait for the play to develop and fall in pursuit.
  • Shedding blocks from OLineman need more than just use of hands. He needs to work on hands-footwork combos in order to better use his athletism against OLineman.
  • Health. Knee, thigh, ankle and hamstring injuries in his career. Notice no upper body injuries, is his injury list another example of plain bad luck?

Fitting them in:

It's all about the Rob Ryan kind of D. I've already written 2 fanposts about it (Here and here) so I won't get into much detail.

If there's a difference between the Ryan brothers, that is highlighted in the 1st post, is that Rob likes to press the QB from the inside while Rex prefers to attack from the outside. And Rob really likes to blitz with his ILBs. Which puts a premium on someone that can effectively blitz (James is inconsistent, Brooking doesn't have the required speed anymore and Lee has his own injury concerns).

And now in the 2nd post, look at Chris Gocong. 1st play: gap asignment in run support. 2nd play: blitz. 3rd play: bracket coverage 11 yards deep. James and Brooking can attack gaps in run support with really good results, but that's about it. Seeing them in Gocong's position 11 yards deep, when he's supposed to provide bracket coverage for Welker is nightmares material!

Something tells me that Carter and Lee may be starting sooner rather than later.

Reminds me of:

Ceiling: Keith Bulluck. Note: I'm not saying that he's going to have that kind of career, I'm saying that his versatility and overall level of play in College reminds me of him.

Likely level of play: Kevin Burnett. Not much of a player against the run, more of a pass specialist.

DeMarco Murray, RB.

Demarco-murray_medium

Assets:

  • Fast one-cut kind of back. Best fit in a zone or area blocking running attack.
  • Tough. Not good at absorbing contact and running over someone. More like a pinball, takes a contact and redirects.
  • Decisive. Knows his asigned gap and goes after it with speed and quickness. Can also wait for players on the move and attack behind them.
  • Vision. In highlights, look at his head, it's always moving, looking at defenders. He's also conscious of his teammates blocking in front of him.
  • Versatile. Soft hands and really good route runner as a pass catcher. Has a bit of a mean side in pass protection.

Questions:

  • Thin lower body and upright stance = Easy low tackling. Too much falling from first contact.
  • Tough enough for inside carries (drive blocking)? Too tall running style gives defenders a lot of contact space. Also gave him some ball security problems.
  • Almost stiff? Seeing him won't make you think Barry Sanders, if he has to make a last second cut to run around a tackler, he won't make it.
  • Injury prone? Better training gave him a "healthy" 2010 (ribs), injuries in his other years cost him playing time (turf toe, knee, hamstring and ankle).

Fitting them in:

In August of last year I wrote a fanpost about the running game style of the Cowboys (Here) and how Garrett was mixing concepts of area and drive blocking to have a versatile running attack. It was partially a plan and a necessity. With the inhability to do one style consistently enough, he's been forced to keep defenses guessing.

After a year, we can all look at the Free Agents moves and the Draft.

  • Jeremy Parnell, questionable talent but good athlete.
  • Tyron Smith, HIGH potential athlete.
  • DeMarco Murray, one-cut area blocking style RB.
  • David Arkin, too much like Kyle Kosier to be a coincidence.
  • Bill Nagy, questionable talent but good athlete.

I really don't like to bet, but I'm pretty sure of this: the Cowboys style of running the ball in the 90s is long gone. Their dominating style is going to be zone blocking but how well they're going to run the ball will be defined by how well they drive block as a combination. Think about the Marshall Faulk Rams. The Cowboys OLine has that kind of potential.

Reminds me of:

Ceiling: Clinton Portis.

Likely level of play: Chester Taylor.

BONUS: David Arkin, G.

9_martin_parker_dt_vs_77_david_arkin_og_medium

Unfortunately, I can't say much regarding this guy, getting my paws on Missouri State games proved to be impossible, so I tried my best in what was possible, getting some film from the Shrine and NFLPA practices and games.

  • The guy is mean (Doug Free will be proud - Here). The guy stops with the whistle, sometimes after that. And it seems that he enjoys giving defenders a taste of the turf.
  • Versatile. For the most part he played at Guard, left and right. But he also saw some action at Tackle.
  • He can move and find his asignment. He's also mean on the move... Larry Allen... The memories of LBs and DBs being tossed around like rag dolls...
  • He has the footwork to redirect pass rushers around the QB in pass protection.
  • Movement can confuse and beat him, but he's a good athlete that played against low level competition.
  • Needs to add some strength, a pet for Woicik?

If Murray is Chester Taylor I'll be mad.

I hope Murray is Murray and he’ll do better than Taylor.

Sure, I wouldn't like that either

But that guy is no scrub, really.

In 9 years his average is 518 rushing yards, 248 receiving yards and 3.4 total TDs.

Would you consider Murray a failure if he makes those numbers in his rookie year? That’s almost as good as Felix’s 2nd year…

Murray & Taylor

I like Taylor a lot. Like Murray is very hard-nosed, but I think Murray is much better. He has great field presence and awareness, much better nose for the end zone. I would put his ceiling closer to Westbrook (or AP?), likely level of play in rookie season, Felix da cat with more pass but less rush yards and couple more TDs.

To this day I have no idea what that woman was singing about. Like, literally no idea. I don’t know what a hollaback girl is. But I have to imagine it is a foul, disease ridden thing that wears too much make-up just to cover up the fact that it is a forty-seven year-old fish dog. – Family guy

Sure

But I’ve seen a physical Carter, the guy is no Barbie Carpenter. You should look at some of his games in 2009… For whatever reason, in 2010, he ended up in bad angles in a whole lot of plays… Seeing how Sturdivant wasn’t selected until very late may explain some of that… Dunno… Haven’t heard that Sturdivant had character or other problems…

I miss having Burnett on the team

I would take Burnett in a heart beat right now.

He has had a great run in San Diego since leaving here.

Dirk Nowitzki is absolutely the most underrated basketball player in the league right now. He is one of four players all-time to average 25+ points and 10+ rebounds in the playoffs.

of a LB who can play the run and the pass.

Why?

Because their track record is so good? Because they get paid to do what they do?

You’re forgiven. But it’s not you that needs forgiving.

It’s the Dallas War Room (with whom you’ve cast your lot) that needs forgiving…over and over and over again.

And how is your track record?

You can’t simply use a few anecdotes of how you were right about certain players to justify yourself as more successful at picking players than Dallas. Largely because you are of course going to fail to mention the ones you were wrong on.

All I said is that Jason Garrett and Rob Ryan disagree with you. That is obviously true. And, as much as you rag on Dallas’s track record, this is our first draft with Jason Garrett and Rob Ryan running it. Forgive me if I give them the benefit of the doubt for now.

Really Chia?, Brewster fits what JG has drafted to a T.

He was a team Captain, first team all MAC, Outland trophy candidate.

Character: A good character type with no off-field issues. He is very close to his family, well-respected by the coaches and takes well to hard coaching. He does well in the classroom and is the type who will give total effort on the playing field.

That is a JG guy.

by BigDinLA on May 21, 2011 10:10 AM CDT up reply actions

Not completely

Brewster is not the athletic, mobile OL that JG signed this year. Brewster may fit the character/intagibles, but certainly not the physical makeup.

Comparing him to Tyron Smith isn’t fair, but just look at his combine measurables and you can immediately tell he is not the “new kind” of Cowboys’ OL that Garrett is drafting.

6’4" OT at 325lbs, 5.3-40yard dash, 4.75-20ss, 8’broad jump are not the measurables of an athletic mobile OT. I think Brewster is destined for OG IF he even makes the team this year.

Blame the GM for that one

This is what you get when you hire your future HC prior to hiring your current head coach and then have him work for the now in effect interim head coach until he does poorly enough to get himself fired. Once the Cowboys lost that franchise changing to the Giants; Wade’s chances of legitimately succeeding were effectively over. I can only see that in retrospect, but a smart insider would have figured it out much earlier.

The team had personnel and team culture issues and Garrett did not try to fix them from the OC chair as those are the purview and mandate of the HC. Garrett did his job. He ran an effective offense with the tools he was given. A lot of Garrett’s changes that could of have happened when he was the OC, but if they had happened then they would have been “Wade’s changes” and he would not have been doing the franchise any favors in doing Wade’s job for him and prolonging a dysfunctional situation.

I blame Houck for not coaching up the young guys.

I really believe the game has passed him by. Of course it was not Houck’s fault Brewster was injured. Thar falls on the old S&C coach. If Brewster is healthy he has the ability to be a OG and that is hopefully why we did not draft anymore interior OL.

by 5Blings on May 23, 2011 2:51 PM CDT up reply actions

I blame him too

…but surely the OC gets more say in pre-draft discussions and rankings of players than a position coach, wouldn’t you agree?

by 5Blings on May 23, 2011 2:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Not necessarily

Depending on how the HC runs the show, it could be positional coaches have more direct impact/discussions with scouts and HC about prospects in their position. Some HC’s would ask their OL coach for insight into a rookie OL more so than their OC…not saying OC isn’t involved, but I could certainly see the situation where Houck fell in love with Brewster and fought to have him higher on the overall board than he deserved.

We’ll likely never learn the truth and I think everyone deserves some blame, but if Garrett as HC doesn’t keep Brewster on the roster, it could be proof that Houck was his biggest supporter…or JG admits and corrects his mistakes quickly.

Whoa Nelly!

Think about the Dallas Cowboys under Wade Phillips.

Jerry hired the OC.

Are you suggesting he and his $3 million salary had less say than Houck did on personnel for the offense?

Let’s not ALWAYS assume the way it went down was the most favorable way possible as it pertains to the new guy. Maybe, just this once, it makes sense to assume that JG (aka Mr. Infallible to some) goofed it on Brewster? Is that so unfathomable?

I think everyone deserves some blame

I was not trying to find some way to absolve Garrett, and I don’t think it ludicrous that the veteran OL coach might have had more say on the OL draft board than the young OC who never coached the OL.

Do you work for a corporation? Have you ever?

There is always a hierarchy of decision making and it generally has to do with vertical reporting relationships. Org charts are there for a reason. Houck having more say on something that would ultimately affect Garrett’s performance as OC makes no sense whatsoever.

It’s ludicrous. It absolutely is.

It’s like saying, “hey, let’s let the flight attendant choose whether we buy planes from Boeing or Airbus”.

The fact is that even IF Garret allowed Houck a bit more latitude on the Brewster pick, Garrett ultimately had the final say….until it got to Cisky and Jerry. Then who the heck knows how the hell they made those horrible decisions.

Come on, man! We are talking an OL coach taking the lead in ranking OL rookies on a draft board, not a flight attendant picking planes to buy…your metaphor is a little jaded.

I also didn’t say Houck had the final decision or was the only one at fault for the bad decision, but I don’t think it outrageous that the scouts and OL coach had more to do with Brewer’s ranking on our draft board than Garrett and Wade.

I was laughing as I typed it.

Kidding aside, don’t we have to assume that the further up you go in an organization, the more authority you have? If you agree in principle, then unless we have any tangible evidence to support an argument to the contrary, JG had more of a say than Houck. Cisky had more than JG. Jerry had more than Cisky.

I said it during the draft, and I'll say it again, we are going to like these players.

I agree, I see Carter and Lee (Rush Hour) starting sooner than most ppl think.

I also think, going into camp, and possibly early in the season Felix will be given every opportunity to prove he should be a starter as opposed to the change of pace scat back he was at Arkansas. My money is on DMurray ripping the job from Felix at some point…middle-end of training camp (earliest)…around midseason (latest). As far as Arkin goes, if not this year, then next year he’ll be starting at one of the guard spots.

Thanks for a nice post.

I think your assessment of the players, indicating both their potential ceiling and their honest most likely level, based on your own knowledge and observations, is awesome. So, thanks.

I think you are pretty right on with their likely level of play, too. The key for Carter will be, what could Rob Ryan have done with a Kevin Burnett? I think quite a lot. Well, obviously, all contingent on him returning to his former level of athleticism and remaining healthy, which are 2 very huge questions that remain to be answered.

by Baked Potato Soup on May 16, 2011 10:14 PM CDT reply actions

Well done

Most researched and well-reasoned post-draft analysis I’ve read yet.

While your point about how Carter fits into a Ryan defense is a good one and makes me feel better about him now that he’s on the team, it also raises another question. Rob Ryan isn’t going to be in Dallas more than two years, probably just one if he has a reasonable amount of success. Investing high draft picks in system-specific players, particularly a guy who’s going to be limited by injury rehab for a while, for a system that isn’t going to be around long just isn’t a great strategy. Even if Carter develops according to plan, in two years there’s a really good chance that you’ll two light and fast ILBs and a DC that prefers at least one that’s a thumper. Much better to bring in a mid-level free agent (such as Gocong) to man the spot for a couple of years and use the draft pick on a CB that will fit into any scheme.

It seems that every three years we’re reinventing the style of defense, from Parcells playing a 3-4 with Zimmer’s guys to a Philips 3-4 with BPs guys and now to a Ryan 3-4 with Wade’s guys. It’s no wonder the D consistently underperforms.

by greatwhitenorth on May 16, 2011 11:56 PM CDT reply actions

I was thinking that too

but if he leaves you hire a Rob Ryan understudy, the best fit would be the linebackers coach Eberflus, that guy is supposed to be the next big thing

Which begs the question...

why wouldn’t Rob try to drag Eberflus along as his DC (or some other position) in his new job? You know, like he already did from the Browns to here.

That’s the time line you responded to with “I was thinking that too”. I’m confused. What time line did you think I was talking about considering I didn’t even mention one?

All I asked was why wouldn’t Rob try to bring his buddy along with him once again. Whether it’s 1-2 years from now or longer, I wouldn’t count too much on Eberflus sticking around once Rob leaves.

when I say thinking down the line

your already saying Eberflus is leaving, im saying maybe he wants his own set of coaches and stays in Dallas

Bruce Carter+Sean Lee=BRUCE LEE!!!!

by Archie Barberio on May 21, 2011 9:19 PM CDT up reply actions

thats IF

Ryan indeed is leaving for a HC job, and IF Eberflus is offered the DC job here in Dallas

there will be a bunch of good options available if Ryan leaves, basically we just want to keep that same style of system in place in my opinion though, so hiring from the Rex/Rob coaching tree would make a ton of sense

I dont think Rob is a HC candidate yet, not yet, he is getting there though
I think he spends 2 years here, revamps this defense into one of the leagues best and then leaves
thats how I see this playing out

Good post

One thing I wonder about is why you say Murray had ball security issues? Pretty sure he had 0 fumbles in four seasons. No?

by Dezstroyer88 on May 17, 2011 2:32 AM CDT reply actions

You're absolutely right

In all the games that I saw, he didn’t fumble once but came close quite a few times… He often carried the ball with little regard for it’s security… Thought that he would have fumbled more often, but didn’t see it…

EXCELLENT POST

Thx for putting in real time to study these guys. By chance would you happen to have links for the games, or are they not online?

Great work as usual Chandus.

Thanks for posting again so soon. Are you a coach at some level? If not, you should be. Go coach those high school kids. You have a lot to offer.

Regarding your assessments, here’s to hoping these are ceiling guys. I hope Carter exceeds Burnett. I had high hopes for Burnett, but he never really became the playmaker I was hoping for. I sure hope Carter maxes out.

Great post, also really like your insight into R Ryans "D"and its nuances.

I liked the draft up front (koolaid drinker?maybe),0-16,I would still love my team. Carter and Murray are intriguing and I can’t wait to see what they bring to our team, but Arkin is my pet-cat. Was raised right down the road from Mo State (SMSU to me),and still can’t believe a Bear has a chance to play on my team.My mom still watches Mo St and said that Arkin is somebody she likes to watch because he is a “Mean SOB”,tries to put his man on the ground on every play.Sounds like something this team needs. Rec’d on your post, keep up the good insight and reading material.

Nice post

But the evidence also says we don’t have much of a D-line to speak of going into the season.

If we don’t get Cullen Jenkins or a player of his caliber, pegs and holes not withstanding, will this draft have been a missed opportunity?

Actually, I'm not looking and Jenkins

I’m looking at Barry Cofield, 6-4, 300+ pounds and 27 years.

Back when he was drafted, I was a fan of his. After looking at him play for the Giants, I think that he’s a perfect fit at 5-tech.

Dunno, but I've seen this:

He’s big and strong enough.

While he doesn’t have pterodactyle arms, I’m pretty sure that he doesn’t have 32 inch arms.

I’ve seen him play against the run and pass (1-tech and 3-tech).

Not explosive like Ratliff, but better pass rusher than Olshansky and Spears he certainly seems to be.

Cofield does have the measurables to be a 5 technique.

It would also be interesting because you know he understands the Giants OL weaknesses. Unfortunately I think he will cost more than Jenkins.

I especially like how you keep it real with everything..

..and call them on what they are good/not good at, and have actually done your homework. Too much around here on this blog lately is straight up homerism that gets rec’d up.. especially when we stumble across a “you damn well know you’ve never heard of this guy” prospect, in which they turn around and act like they’ve been scouting them this whole time. Got old.. quick.

Solid post Chandus and rec'd.

I really hope you are right on these guys because I just don’t see them even coming close to your upsides.

I hope I'm right, too

That’s the big problem with the jump in competition from College to the NFL, how can you know that a player hit his ceiling in College and isn’t NFL material.

You don’t. You just hope that they develop. That’s why there isn’t a single team that is perfect at drafting…

Good stuff Chandus

From what I have seen of Carter, I think you are spot on. His failed plays on tape seem to be due to the read-and-react assignements of his defense. he reads the plays early but instead of attacking the ball carrier is forced to hold his ground and wait and often doesn’t make contact while moving forward. yet when you see him play freely in coverage he is a heatseeking missle. I am shocked by how often he covered WRs in the slot in college. If rehab goes well I will be surprised if we don’t see Carter often as a nickle-cover LB this season. Your comparisons are also great, though Burnett seems like a “poor man’s” Carter since Carter does seem way more athletic.

Murray-Felix RB combo will be dangerous.

Arkin could surprise people and win the starting backup OG spot this year.

I was talking to a Titans fan tonight at a softball game

and he said he wanted Bruce Carter for months and wasnt happy they took Ayers over Carter
so im gonna keep an eye on Ayers and Carter, see how their careers pan out
i mean this guy was in love with Bruce Carter, actually made me feel good

It will be tough comparison due to systems (4-3 OLB vs. 3-4 ILB)

But in my opinion Ayers was overrated while Carter due to his injury was underrated. Personally, I am much happier with drafting Carter for 3-4 ILB needs (with versatility for OLB if needed) rather than trying to make Ayers fit our 3-4 defense.
